Fixing a Halo Infinite Custom Game depends on where the failure occurs. A host lobby that will not start, a Custom Game Browser session that does not appear, a black screen after joining, and Halo Infinite failing to launch are different problems with different workarounds.
First identify the failing stage, then follow the matching path below. The most common “missing game” cases are normal Browser behavior: the host has not started the match, the lobby is Friends Only or Invite Only, or the session is already full.

|---|---|---|
| Halo Infinite does not open | Game launch | Easy Anti-Cheat, installation type and security software on PC |
| Play does nothing in a host lobby | Starting a Custom Game | Whether a player was removed, a variant was changed, or the lobby state is stale |
| A friend’s game is not listed | Finding a Browser session | Privacy, whether the match is in progress, and whether the session is full |
| Joining reaches a black screen or a fixed map view | Loading into an active session | Leave the Fireteam and join another Browser session |
| An online-service message appears | Service or network connection | Xbox or Steam service status and your local connection |
Understand what the Custom Game Browser actually lists
The Custom Game Browser (CGB) lists Custom Games that are currently active and immediately joinable. It is not a queue for a host who is still arranging a lobby. When you select a listed game, you enter that session’s Fireteam and then load into the match already in progress. Forge maps and modes can be used in Browser sessions.

Make a host session visible
- Open Play and select Custom Game.
- Open Lobby Options.
- Set Privacy to Open.
- Select the map and mode.
- Press Play to start the game. A lobby that is merely waiting has not yet become a Browser listing.
Friends Only and Invite Only lobbies are not listed publicly. A full session is omitted as well. If you are waiting for a newly created game, refresh the Browser after changing filters or after the host starts the match. Halo Support says Custom Games and the Browser support up to 24 players and four Observers per session, so a session can disappear simply because its available places are gone.
When “I can’t find the game” is expected
- The host selected Friends Only or Invite Only instead of Open.
- The host has not pressed Play, so the lobby is still waiting.
- The match is already full.
- Your Browser filters have not been refreshed after the session changed.
These conditions do not indicate a loading defect. Ask the host to confirm the privacy setting and that the match is in progress before trying reinstallations or network changes.
Rebuild a lobby that will not start after removing a player
Halo Support documents a specific stale-lobby sequence. Players return to a Custom Games lobby after a match, load a saved variant, change match options, and remove someone. The removed player can continue to appear in the lobby interface even though the game state no longer permits the match to start. Pressing Play then appears to do nothing.

- End the affected lobby rather than repeatedly pressing Play.
- Create a new Custom Games lobby.
- Reload the intended map, mode and variant in the new lobby.
- If the removed player is still affected, have that player close and relaunch Halo Infinite before joining the recreated lobby.
This workaround targets the player-removal and variant-edit sequence. It is not a universal fix for every lobby that fails to start; if no player was removed and no matching Known Issues entry applies, continue with the service and network checks below.
Fix a black screen or stationary view after joining a Browser game
A Browser join can occasionally load a black screen or a stationary map view with most of the HUD missing. Halo Support’s documented workaround is to leave the current Fireteam and join a different Browser session. Retrying the same session can reproduce the problem.
- Pause the game.
- Open Social.
- Select Leave Fireteam.
- Return to the Custom Game Browser.
- Choose a different active session and join it.
If another session loads normally, the failure was tied to the original session state rather than proof that your installation is damaged. If every session produces the same display failure, record the exact behavior and move to the service, platform and support steps instead of cycling through the same Browser listing.
Handle sessions that vanish or reappear incorrectly
The Browser only shows games that are active and immediately joinable. Halo Support also lists a separate case in which a session that was once full does not reappear after players leave. In that situation, waiting for the old listing to return may not work.

Host workaround for a stale full session
- End the current Custom Game.
- Start a new Custom Game with the desired map and mode.
- Set the privacy level to Open if you want Browser visibility.
- Press Play and have players refresh their Browser lists.
For a session that never appeared at all, check the simpler explanations first: it may still be waiting in the lobby, be Friends Only or Invite Only, or have reached its player capacity.
Correct a map or mode that changes when using a Community file
Halo Support describes a map-selection issue when a player launches Halo Infinite, opens Community, and starts a Custom Game directly from a community-made map file. The lobby can open with a different map selected than the file the player chose.
Use this order instead:
- Launch Halo Infinite.
- Open the Custom Game lobby before selecting the community-made map file.
- From the lobby, select the intended map and mode.
- Confirm the selection before pressing Play.
This is a selection-order workaround, not a general loading repair. If the correct map appears in the lobby but fails during loading, classify the failure as a session, service, LAN or platform problem.
Separate a game-launch failure from a Custom Game failure on PC
If Halo Infinite itself will not launch, Browser and lobby fixes cannot help. The Multiplayer Known Issues page updated November 18, 2025 lists two narrow PC conditions. That page is a dated snapshot; it may not include fixes or newly introduced behavior by October 2026.
Easy Anti-Cheat is missing
For a Steam installation, Halo Support recommends verifying the integrity of the game files. In Steam, open the game’s properties, go to the installed-files section and run Verify integrity of game files. Steam should restore missing components, including the Easy Anti-Cheat installation when applicable.
For Microsoft Store or Xbox app installations, or when Steam verification does not resolve the missing component, uninstall and reinstall Halo Infinite. The documented purpose of the reinstall is to trigger the Easy Anti-Cheat installation process.
Comodo Antivirus blocks the Microsoft Store or Xbox app installation
The Known Issues entry identifies Comodo Antivirus as a specific blocker for Halo Infinite installations obtained through the Microsoft Store or Xbox app. Add Halo Infinite to Comodo’s Excluded Applications list, then try launching again. Do not interpret this entry as advice to disable security software generally; it applies to the named product and installation path.
Forge Oasis crash on Steam
A separate entry concerns a crash while loading the Forge map Oasis through Steam. The listed workaround is to start another Forge map, leave that map, and then start Oasis. This is a Forge-specific crash workaround, not a universal remedy for Custom Games that will not load.

Some failures are caused upstream of your lobby. Halo Support identifies these messages and menu states as possible service-outage symptoms:
Rank #3
- Software Main Type: Game
- Software Sub Type: First Person Shooter
- Software Name: Halo Infinite Standard Edition
- ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
- Single Player Supported: Yes
- “Error: There was a problem with the Dedicated Server. Please try again.”
- “Error: Multiplayer Is Unavailable. Please Try Again Later.”
- “Error: Unable to connect to the Halo Infinite Lobby Service.”
- The menu shows Offline or Transitioning.
- The Battle Pass or in-game menus fail to load.
Broader Xbox or Steam outages can produce similar behavior. A dated troubleshooting article cannot establish whether Halo or platform services are currently online, so check the current service notices and Halo Support’s social updates when these symptoms appear.
Work through the connection checks in order
- Confirm that Xbox or Steam services are operating normally for your platform.
- Check that other devices on your home network can reach the internet.
- Restart the local connection equipment only if the connection check shows a broader home-network problem.
- Return to Halo Infinite and test the same action once services and local connectivity are available.
- If the exact service error persists after those checks, submit a Halo Support ticket and include the complete message.
Halo Support provides separate Windows, Xbox and Steam network-troubleshooting guidance. Use the guide for your platform rather than applying PC instructions to an Xbox console or vice versa.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.LAN, Mode Editor and settings-specific cases
The Known Issues list contains additional Custom Game problems that require symptom matching. Mode Editor options can revert or fail to apply as expected, and some settings changes can leave a lobby unable to start. Recreate the lobby when the documented sequence involves a removed player; do not present that workaround as a cure for every Mode Editor issue.
LAN connection error or missing team roster
For a rare LAN connection error or a team roster that disappears, Halo Support’s listed action is to close and relaunch Halo Infinite. Test again after the relaunch before changing unrelated settings.
Argyle and Detachment with the LAN server option
The Known Issues page specifically names Argyle and Detachment as maps that can remove all players and Observers when loaded with the LAN server option. If that exact map-and-server combination is involved, switch away from it while reporting the issue. A generic internet troubleshooting cycle is unlikely to address a map-specific LAN behavior.
Use a decision path instead of a universal fix
| Symptom | Most relevant action | What the action does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Lobby will not start after removing a player and editing a variant | Recreate the lobby; the removed player relaunches Halo Infinite if needed | It does not diagnose unrelated Mode Editor or network failures |
| Black screen or fixed view after Browser join | Pause, Social, Leave Fireteam, then join another session | Retrying the same session is not the documented workaround |
| Friend’s game absent from Browser | Use Open privacy, start the match, confirm it is not full, refresh Browser | A waiting, private or full lobby is not necessarily broken |
| Previously full session does not return | Host ends the game and starts a new one | Refreshing alone may not restore the old listing |
| Community map opens with another map selected | Open the Custom Game lobby before selecting the community file | This does not fix a later loading or server error |
| Dedicated-server, multiplayer-unavailable or lobby-service error | Check platform and local network status, then contact Halo Support with the exact text | It does not establish that your installation is corrupt |
| Halo will not launch on PC | Apply the matching Easy Anti-Cheat or Comodo workaround for your install type | Reinstalling is not a first-line fix for every Custom Game symptom |
What not to do
- Do not reinstall Halo Infinite merely because a friend’s Open lobby is missing from the Browser.
- Do not repeatedly retry a Browser session that produced a black or HUD-less screen; leave the Fireteam and choose another session.
- Do not assume a dated Known Issues entry confirms the same defect is still present. The page was updated November 18, 2025 and may have changed since then.
- Do not disable security software broadly. The documented Comodo action is an exclusion for Halo Infinite on the Microsoft Store or Xbox app installation.
- Do not treat one player’s report of “loading map… 0%” ending in a network error as prevalence data or an official diagnosis. It is anecdotal wording that can help describe a symptom when filing a report.
When to report the problem
If the failure is not covered by the matching workaround, gather the details before opening a Halo Support ticket:
- The exact error text, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Platform and installation source: Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox app on PC, or Xbox console.
- Whether the session is online or LAN.
- Map, mode, community file or Forge map involved.
- Whether the lobby was Open, Friends Only or Invite Only, and whether it was full.
- The sequence immediately before the failure, such as removing a player, loading a saved variant or changing Mode Editor settings.
- Whether closing and relaunching changed the result.
Halo Support directs players to submit a bug report for persistent failures that are absent from the Known Issues list. Include the exact service message when one appears; “it will not load” alone does not identify whether the problem is launch, lobby, Browser, server or network related.
Why older Browser fixes should be read carefully
Halo’s December Mid-Season Update Preview described work on blocked joins when backend changes occurred while sessions remained open, clearer messaging for full sessions, an error when a selected session was no longer active, and Fireteam-joining improvements. Those are historical release-note facts. They explain why some Browser edge cases have received engineering attention, but they do not establish that the old bugs remain or that services are currently affected.
