Start with the failure pattern, not a reinstall
A crash at startup, a freeze on the loading screen, a failure to enter Story Mode and a mod that simply does not appear can have different causes. Before changing files, write down four facts:

- Edition: identify whether you are running GTA V Legacy or Enhanced.
- Build: record the game build shown by the launcher or executable. Mod loaders and plugins can depend on an exact executable build.
- Failure stage: note whether the game crashes immediately, during the loading screen, when Story Mode opens, or only after a particular script or vehicle is used.
- Last change: record the most recent game update, Script Hook V update, ASI plugin, script, archive or configuration edit.
Keep the exact error text, if any. “Crashing on startup” after a game update points toward version support or a loader, while a crash only when an add-on vehicle is spawned points more strongly toward that content or the configuration that supports it. These are working hypotheses, not guarantees; the isolation steps below are what confirm the cause.
Use the symptom to choose the first check

1. Establish a clean, recoverable baseline
Do not start by deleting every mod. A controlled baseline tells you whether the game itself is healthy and lets you undo each test.

- Back up the installation and mod folders. Copy important configuration files, save files and mod archives to a separate location. Never make an irreversible change to the only copy of a file you may need to restore.
- Temporarily disable the mod setup. Use the mod manager’s disable function if you have one, or move third-party ASI plugins, script files and modified archives out of the locations specified by their installers. Preserve their original filenames in the backup so you can restore them accurately.
- Launch the unmodified game. Test far enough to reach Story Mode. A clean launch does not prove every mod is compatible, but it establishes that the base executable can start.
- Record the result. If the clean game still crashes, stop treating the symptom as mod-specific and follow the general PC branch below. If it works, re-enable content in a controlled sequence rather than restoring everything at once.
If you cannot create a clean copy, disable only the files you can identify and keep a written list of every change. The goal is a reversible experiment, not a permanent reinstallation.
2. If the unmodified game also crashes
A failure with all third-party content disabled points to a general game, driver or system problem. Rockstar’s general PC guidance covers these checks:
- Install the latest patch offered for your edition and launcher.
- Update the graphics driver and restart the computer after installation if the driver installer requests it.
- Use the launcher’s file-verification or repair function. Let it finish before adding any mod files back.
- Check the DirectX and Microsoft Visual C++ requirements listed for the game and repair or reinstall the required components when they are missing or damaged.
These steps can repair a broken vanilla installation, but they do not establish that a third-party loader or mod is compatible. Once the clean game launches, return to version and dependency checks rather than assuming the next crash has the same cause.

Script Hook V releases are tied to supported GTA V editions and executable builds. A game update can leave your existing ASI and script stack unchanged while making the loader unsupported.
- Identify the edition. Confirm Legacy or Enhanced in the launcher and in the mod’s own instructions. Do not apply a Legacy-only file to Enhanced, or vice versa, merely because the filenames look similar.
- Read the current Script Hook V release information. Confirm that it explicitly supports your edition and installed build. The maintainer’s guidance is the authority for whether a build is recognized; do not rely on an old forum post or a copied build number.
- Check the game’s update date against your last working session. If the executable changed and the loader does not list support, remove the dependent ASI and script files and wait for a compatible release instead of stacking unrelated fixes.
- Check every dependent mod. A compatible loader does not make an older plugin compatible. Read each mod’s changelog and prerequisites for the same edition and build.
If the current build is not recognized, the defensible diagnostic action is to run the clean game and wait for support. Downgrading, replacing executables or mixing files from different editions can create a less diagnosable installation and may violate the game’s terms or launcher behavior.

4. Verify loaders, runtimes and file placement
A loader problem often looks like a broken mod. ASI plugins and script-based mods may require different runtimes, and one missing prerequisite can prevent a mod from loading while leaving no useful in-game message.
Check the mod’s own prerequisites
- Confirm whether the mod requires Script Hook V, an ASI loader, a script runtime or another library.
- Check whether the required component supports your edition and build, not just the latest version named in an old guide.
- Install only the prerequisite versions specified by the current maintainer instructions. Do not keep multiple competing loader copies in the same installation.
Check the requested locations
Follow the mod’s current installation directions for the exact folder and filename. Generic placement guides can lag behind changes between Legacy and Enhanced. A file in a similarly named directory, a doubled extension such as .asi.asi, or an archive placed outside the loader’s scan location can make an otherwise correct mod appear inactive.

With a backup available, enable the loader and one known-compatible, low-impact plugin. Launch Story Mode, exit, and inspect the result before adding scripts, vehicles or large archive changes. If the game fails at this point, the loader, prerequisite or build match is a more likely branch than a content conflict.
5. Isolate third-party files one change at a time
Reinstalling everything first destroys the evidence about which change introduced the failure. A process-of-elimination test is slower than a mass reset but usually produces a useful answer.
- Sort changes by recency and scope. Start with the newest ASI plugin, script file, archive edit or configuration change. Keep separate groups for loaders, scripts and content so you know what each test changes.
- Disable the newest addition. Move it to the backup location or use the manager’s disable control. Do not overwrite it; you may need the original file for comparison.
- Launch and reproduce the same symptom. Use the same save, menu path or in-game action. A startup crash should be tested at startup; a vehicle-related crash should be tested by spawning that vehicle.
- Log the result. Write down the file removed, the build, the test scenario and whether the symptom changed. A short log prevents two files being changed between tests.
- Restore one item at a time. When the baseline is stable, add the disabled files back individually and test after each addition. The first return of the crash identifies a suspect group, not automatic proof of guilt; two files can conflict.
- Confirm the suspect. Remove the suspected file again and repeat the same test. If the failure disappears and returns on restoration, check that mod’s current compatibility notes and dependencies before replacing it.
When several files were installed together, split the group in half for the first pass, then narrow the failing half. This binary approach reduces the number of launches while preserving the same evidence.

6. Handle add-on vehicles and other content with gameconfig carefully
Gameconfig changes matter most when the setup adds vehicles or other add-on content. The configuration controls memory-pool limits that may need modification for the installed game build and the size of the add-on set.

Use a release for the exact build
Obtain a version-specific gameconfig.xml release that names your GTA V edition and build. A configuration for another update can be as incompatible as an outdated plugin. Keep the original file so you can restore it if the game becomes less stable.
Follow the maintainer’s installation instructions
Install the file in the location and archive structure specified by its maintainer. Do not assume that every setup needs every optional adjuster. Increasing limits arbitrarily can introduce new instability and does not prove that a crash was caused by memory pools.
Separate configuration from content testing
- Test the clean game with the version-matched configuration but without add-on content.
- Add one content pack or vehicle group and reproduce the failure.
- If the crash appears only after the content is restored, verify that content’s files, dependencies and documented limits.
- If the game crashes with the configuration alone, restore the original and revisit edition/build compatibility.
This sequence distinguishes a configuration mismatch from a malformed or incompatible add-on. It also prevents a large “cars supported” claim from substituting for checking the actual build and instructions.
7. Deal with crashes that begin after a game update
Updates can break a previously working stack without any file on your side changing. Treat the update as a new compatibility event.

- Record the new executable build and whether the launcher changed the edition or installation path.
- Check Script Hook V support for that exact build.
- Check each loader, script runtime, ASI plugin and gameconfig release independently.
- Disable all unsupported components before testing the clean game.
- Restore only components whose maintainers document support for the new build.
If support is not yet available, leaving the unsupported component disabled is safer than combining an old loader with new archives or random replacement files. A working clean game confirms that the update itself is not necessarily broken; it does not make the old mod stack safe.

Do not use a modded installation as a path into official GTA Online. Rockstar states that “Launching GTA Online without BattlEye will not allow the game to connect to official GTA Online servers.” Rockstar also states that mods are disabled during gameplay when BattlEye is operating.
For Online connectivity, follow Rockstar’s current BattlEye and launcher instructions. For mod diagnosis, use the intended offline or single-player environment with third-party files disabled whenever you test the vanilla baseline. Do not advise bypassing anti-cheat protections or carrying ASI and script files into Online.
9. Recovery paths for common outcomes
The clean game works, but every modded launch crashes
Recheck the edition/build match for Script Hook V and the loader. If those are supported, enable only the loader and one confirmed-compatible plugin. A failure at that point indicates a prerequisite or placement problem; a later failure identifies the next group to isolate.

The game loads, but one script does nothing
Verify that the script runtime and every stated dependency are installed, then check the exact filename and requested folder. Test the script in the scenario described by its maintainer; some scripts do not show an obvious menu or startup message.
The game crashes only when an add-on vehicle appears
Remove the vehicle and test the rest of the stack. Then check the vehicle’s own files and confirm that gameconfig.xml matches the installed build. Restore one vehicle or pack at a time rather than increasing limits indiscriminately.
The crash remains after removing the newest file
The last-installed file is a lead, not proof. Restore it only after testing another suspect group, because the update may have made an older component incompatible or two files may conflict. Use your change log to compare the first stable and first failing states.
The vanilla game fails after file verification
Repeat the general PC branch: patch level, graphics driver, DirectX and Visual C++ requirements, then retest without third-party files. If the clean installation still fails, resolve that problem before reintroducing mods.
10. A repeatable checklist
- Edition recorded: Legacy or Enhanced.
- Executable or launcher build recorded.
- Failure stage and exact error text recorded.
- Last update or file change recorded.
- Backup made before moving or replacing files.
- Clean Story Mode launch tested.
- Patch, driver, file verification and DirectX/C++ checks completed when the clean game fails.
- Script Hook V support checked for the exact edition and build.
- Loader, runtime and mod-specific prerequisites checked.
- Recently added ASI, script and archive files isolated individually.
- Version-matched gameconfig used only when add-on content makes it relevant.
- Online testing kept separate from modded offline testing.
What a reliable diagnosis looks like
A useful diagnosis names a reproducible condition: for example, “the clean game launches, the loader plus one plugin launches, and the crash returns when this specific script is restored.” That is stronger than “reinstall the mods” because it ties the failure to an edition, build, file and test scenario. If no single file can be isolated, preserve the log and backups, leave unsupported components disabled, and wait for a maintainer release that explicitly covers the current build rather than forcing the stack to load.
