Shut down and disconnect power before inspecting any visible liquid. Then identify whether the graphics card uses a factory-sealed all-in-one (AIO) cooler, an owner-serviceable custom loop, or an enterprise/server loop. A sealed AIO should not be opened; use external checks and the manufacturer’s support process. A custom loop can be inspected, leak-tested, primed and cleaned, but only according to the exact parts’ instructions. Most overheating and flow complaints come from one of six causes: obstructed airflow, an unpowered pump, trapped air after filling, a kink or blockage, degraded coolant, or a leak.
Start with a safe diagnosis
Liquid and electricity are a hazardous combination. If you see coolant outside the reservoir, tubing, radiator, block or chassis, stop the computer, switch off the power supply, unplug every power lead and disconnect external power before touching wet hardware. Lenovo’s GPU-server guidance requires disconnected power supplies when water is observed outside the chassis and warns that a small leak may not trigger a sensor. A missing alarm is not proof that the loop is dry.

- Stop operation. Do not keep gaming or benchmarking to “see whether it settles.” Turn the system off normally if it is stable; use the power switch or unplug it if liquid is spreading or the machine is unresponsive.
- Remove power. Switch the PSU off, unplug it from the wall and disconnect auxiliary power where it can be reached safely.
- Photograph the affected area. A dry photograph of fittings, tubing, the pump and the graphics-card block can help a manufacturer or technician determine whether the problem is a connection, seam or component failure.
- Classify the cooler. A sealed AIO, a custom open loop and a serviceable enterprise loop have different safe procedures and warranty boundaries.
Do not use a server replacement procedure as a home-PC disassembly guide. Lenovo’s instructions apply to a particular enterprise platform and trained technicians. For any system, the exact cooler and component manuals take precedence over generic advice.
Identify the cooling system before troubleshooting
| System type | What you can safely check first | What to do about a suspected leak |
|---|---|---|
| Factory-sealed GPU AIO | Fan and radiator dust, fan operation, cooler connection, pump/header settings, mounting/contact symptoms and external noise | Keep it closed. Treat visible coolant as a hardware or warranty issue and contact the maker. |
| Custom open loop | Reservoir level, pump power and speed, trapped air, kinks, fittings, coolant condition, blockages and airflow | Power off, inspect fittings and tubing, then use the maker’s fill and leak-test procedure. |
| Enterprise or server loop | Only the checks permitted by the platform’s service documentation and your technician qualification | Follow the platform procedure; do not improvise a consumer-PC repair. |
The most useful facts to record are whether liquid is visible, whether the problem began immediately after filling or servicing, whether the pump reports an RPM or flow signal, whether fans and radiators are obstructed, and whether temperatures rise at idle or only under load.

If a sealed AIO GPU is overheating
AIO troubleshooting is deliberately limited because the pump, cold plate and radiator are a sealed assembly. CORSAIR’s support guidance states, “We do NOT recommend opening or modifying the cooler in any way.” Opening or modifying the cited AIO voids its warranty. Use the following external checks, then stop and request support if the fault remains.
1. Confirm fan and radiator airflow
With power removed, inspect both sides of the radiator and each fan for dust, pet hair or a cable touching the blades. Clean debris without bending the radiator fins. When the system is powered again, verify that the radiator fans actually start and that their speed changes under load. A blocked radiator cannot reject heat even when the pump is healthy.
2. Check the cooler connection and header mode
Verify that the cooler’s power and control leads are fully seated and connected to the headers specified by the cooler maker. CORSAIR gives a model-specific example: a three-pin cooler without a SATA connection may require the motherboard header to be configured correctly. That is not a universal wiring rule; use your model’s diagram rather than moving a connector at random.
3. Consider contact and thermal paste
A cooler that was recently installed can overheat because the cold plate is not making even contact or the thermal interface material is damaged, contaminated or incorrectly applied. Inspect the mounting hardware and follow the GPU maker’s disassembly and paste instructions. Do not remove a sealed AIO’s cold plate merely to inspect it; ask the manufacturer whether the unit should be replaced.
4. Separate fan noise from pump noise
Use a brief, controlled listening check to determine whether rattling comes from a fan bearing or from the pump. Do not put fingers into a moving fan. Persistent bubbling or grinding inside the pump can indicate air in the pump chamber. CORSAIR’s AIO guidance advises positioning the pump so it is not the highest point of the loop, allowing air to collect in the radiator. Only use the gentle repositioning and pump-mode procedure specified for your model, and never tilt a running computer if doing so could spill liquid, strain tubing or pull cables.

5. Escalate instead of opening the unit
If cleaning, connection checks and the maker’s approved settings do not restore normal temperatures, stop experimenting. Provide the model, serial information, temperature behavior, fan/pump symptoms and photographs to support. A replacement cooler may be appropriate after diagnosis, but GPU mounting hardware and radiator dimensions must match the exact card and case.
If a custom loop has no flow or very low flow
Newly filled loops often show absent, weak or periodic movement while air is being displaced. The LLX-7000 manual from Koolance identifies incomplete priming as a common explanation immediately after filling. A pump that is running dry, however, can be damaged, so do not continue powering it when the reservoir is empty.
Check coolant level and pump power
- With the system off, inspect the reservoir. The pump inlet must remain covered by coolant during operation.
- Confirm that the pump receives power from the connector, controller or power supply specified by its maker. Check the controller’s reported speed or status if available.
- Look for a visible swirl, return stream or changing reservoir level when the pump is briefly powered under the manufacturer’s filling procedure.
- Stop immediately if the reservoir is about to run dry, if the pump emits a harsh dry-running sound, or if liquid appears outside the loop.
NVIDIA’s GeForce filling guidance cautions that too little coolant can leave bubbles that hinder pump performance or even damage the pump. A reservoir that looks partly full is not enough if air is entering the pump inlet.
Bleed trapped air after filling
Use the exact bleed sequence for the pump and reservoir. On the Koolance LLX-7000, the manual describes opening the fill port, changing a pump setting and carefully tilting connected components to help release air. That procedure is specific to compatible LLX-7000 hardware; do not copy its settings to another pump. Keep the power supply isolated as directed by the manual and stop if tilting could put a fitting, cable or block under stress.
Inspect for kinks and loose connections
Trace every tube from reservoir to pump, radiator, blocks and return. A tight bend can flatten the tube’s internal passage and produce the same symptoms as a weak pump. At each fitting, check that the tube is fully inserted, the compression nut is tight and a clamp is correctly placed on a barb. Koolance specifically notes that incorrect fitting or tubing installation, loose compression nuts, incorrectly positioned clamps and a tubing/fitting diameter mismatch can explain a connection leak.

Look for a restriction or contaminated coolant
If priming does not restore flow, inspect the loop for deposits, biological growth or clumped pigment. Thermaltake warns that deposits and bacteria can congest narrow contact-plate passages and radiator lines, while pigmented coolant can clump in some products. A restriction may leave the pump sounding normal while the graphics-card block receives little coolant. Drain, disassemble and clean only with the coolant and cleaning process approved for the exact blocks, tubing, seals and radiator. CORSAIR warns against strong acids, bases, alcohol-based solutions and third-party radiator cleaners for the cited custom-loop kit.

Once power is disconnected, inspect the reservoir, pump housing, block edges, radiator seams, drain and fill ports, every fitting and the full length of the tubing. A paper towel held near—but not pushed into—a fitting can reveal a slow seep during a controlled, unpowered inspection. Replace a damaged tube, O-ring or fitting rather than tightening until the part cracks. A diameter mismatch cannot be fixed by extra force.
Use a pressure tester before filling
A manual PC water-cooling leak tester is an optional way to assess whether a custom loop retains pressure before coolant is added. EK’s user guide describes attaching a tester, applying pressure with its mini pump and checking whether pressure is retained. Follow the tester’s compatibility instructions and pressure limit; pressure testing does not authorize opening a sealed AIO and does not make it safe to exceed a block, radiator or fitting’s rating.
Perform the maker’s powered-off leak test
After assembling or servicing a custom loop, follow the exact fill and leak-test sequence for the kit. CORSAIR’s XH505i RX 360 guide recommends a leak test of at least 24 hours for that kit. Its procedure uses a 24-pin PSU jumper so the pump can run without powering the motherboard, circulates coolant while the builder watches for leaks, and requires stopping the PSU before the reservoir runs dry. The 24-hour figure is a recommendation for that cited kit, not a universal requirement for every loop.
If coolant reaches electronics
Keep the system disconnected until all liquid has been removed and the affected parts have dried completely. Do not “test” a wet graphics card by powering it briefly. If the leak came from a block, fitting or radiator, document the failure and check the component maker’s warranty terms before disassembly; improper or hasty assembly can fall outside coverage.

Diagnose bubbling, rattling and intermittent flow
Noise is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First isolate the sound: a fan can rattle from a cable or bearing, while a pump can buzz, grind or gurgle when air reaches its impeller. Observe whether the sound changes with fan speed, pump speed or case orientation, but do not move a powered system when coolant could spill.
- Only during the first fill: trapped air or incomplete priming is likely. Keep the reservoir supplied and follow the maker’s bleed sequence.
- After the loop has been stable: a falling reservoir level, a loose fitting, a failing seal or air entering through a restriction deserves inspection before further use.
- Noise with rising GPU temperature: verify pump power and flow before blaming the fans. A pump can sound active while a blockage prevents adequate circulation.
- Noise with normal temperatures: isolate fan and pump sources and monitor for change; do not assume every gurgle indicates a leak.
For a sealed AIO, use only the maker’s approved positioning guidance. For a custom loop, address the reservoir level, inlet coverage and air pockets rather than repeatedly shaking the entire computer.

Liquid cooling still depends on fans and radiator airflow. Dust on the radiator, a blocked intake, a stopped fan or a case with no exhaust path can raise GPU temperatures even when coolant is moving. Clean filters and radiator surfaces, verify fan direction and confirm that the radiator is not pressed against a wall or panel that prevents exhaust. Check the graphics-card and radiator fan curves after cleaning.
A temperature rise that began immediately after a rebuild points more strongly to a mounting, connection, priming or leak issue. A gradual rise over months makes dust, coolant condition and deposits more plausible. These are diagnostic tendencies, not proof; confirm them with pump status, airflow inspection and the maker’s limits.

Record the fluid type, fill date and any parts replaced. If the coolant changes color, develops particles, forms stringy growth or leaves a film, stop the loop and follow the maker’s drain-and-clean procedure. Never add household cleaners or unapproved acids, bases, alcohol-based products or radiator chemicals.
Use temperatures intelligently
There is no reliable GPU-wide temperature cutoff that applies to every card, BIOS, workload and cooler. Compare core, memory and any hotspot readings with the exact GPU and cooler manufacturer’s published limits. A temperature that is safe for one model can be inappropriate for another.
Log temperature together with GPU load, fan speed, pump speed, coolant temperature if the loop measures it, and room conditions. A high reading with zero pump RPM is a different fault from a high reading with normal flow and a radiator fan stopped. A brief load spike is also different from a sustained climb that continues until throttling.
A practical decision path
- Visible liquid? Power off, unplug and inspect without energizing wet hardware. AIO owners should contact the maker; custom-loop owners should identify and replace the failed connection or part under the maker’s procedure.
- No visible liquid, but no flow? Check reservoir level, pump power and priming. Do not run the pump dry.
- Flow is intermittent after a fill? Bleed trapped air using the exact model procedure, keeping the pump inlet covered.
- Flow remains poor? Inspect kinks, fitting diameter, clamps, deposits, biological growth and coolant pigment; use only approved cleaning methods.
- Flow appears normal, but temperatures are high? Check radiator and case airflow, fan operation, thermal contact and coolant age.
- An AIO still overheats after external checks? Stop opening or modifying it and use manufacturer support or warranty service.
The safest fix is the one that matches the cooler’s construction. External cleaning and connection checks are appropriate for a sealed AIO; filling, bleeding, pressure testing and flushing belong to a serviceable custom loop with compatible parts and documented procedures.
