First distinguish missing access from a failed summary

Google lists “Summarize key takeaways from an article” as a supported Gemini in Chrome task. That establishes the intended use, not a guarantee that every individual page will always be summarized successfully. Google’s help material does not publish a universal rule covering every site, paywall, page length, or document format. Do not assume that a single unsuccessful page proves the feature is broken; verify access and tab context first.
Check whether your setup is eligible
Supported computer and browser
For desktop use, Google’s availability guidance names a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer. Chrome must be current, and you must be signed in to Chrome. An ordinary browser window is required: Gemini in Chrome is not available in Incognito.

Region, language, age and rollout
Your account must be in a supported region, and the device language must be supported. Google also applies an age requirement, so an otherwise compatible account may still be ineligible. Availability is rolling out gradually; Google explicitly notes that Gemini in Chrome is not available to all users yet. A missing side panel can therefore be a rollout or eligibility issue rather than a problem with the page.
Work, school and managed computers
An administrator can restrict Gemini in Chrome for a work or school account. If the computer is managed, ask the organization’s administrator whether Gemini in Chrome is enabled for your account. Google also warns that some features can be restricted in virtualized environments, so a virtual desktop or similar setup may behave differently from a normally installed Chrome session.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
Work through the steps in order. After each one, reopen the page and try the summary again so you know which change affected the result.

Open a normal, signed-in Chrome window
Close any Incognito window and open the page in a regular Chrome window. Confirm that the profile shown in Chrome is the account you intend to use and that Chrome sign-in is active. If Gemini is absent only in Incognito, that is expected behavior rather than a page error.

Restart Chrome
Quit Chrome completely, reopen it, sign in if prompted, and load the page again. A full restart can restore a side panel or account state that did not initialize correctly. Do not treat a restart as proof that every page is compatible; it only removes a temporary browser-state problem.

Check location and VPN state
Google recommends checking your region when Gemini in Chrome is unavailable or stops working. If you recently travelled, Google notes that your location may not have updated yet. Turn off a VPN temporarily and retry in the regular connection. A VPN or stale location signal can make a supported account appear to be outside an eligible region.

Update Chrome
Install the latest Chrome version using Chrome’s built-in update mechanism, then restart the browser when it asks you to. An out-of-date browser can prevent a feature that is being delivered through current Chrome builds from appearing or operating normally.

Confirm that Gemini is using the intended tab
Gemini in Chrome shares the current tab by default when it opens. If several tabs are open, verify that the page you want summarized is the tab being shared. Gemini lets you manage shared tabs; use that control to select the intended tab or remove an unintended one, then ask for the article’s key takeaways again.
This check matters when Gemini summarizes a different page, says it cannot access the content you expected, or appears to ignore a navigation that happened after the panel opened.

Reload the Gemini side panel
When the panel is present but unresponsive, right-click the Gemini side panel or floating chat and choose Reload. Google specifically recommends this action for persistent trouble. After the panel reloads, return to the target tab and retry the summary.

Reset Chrome flags only as an advanced step
Chrome flags are experimental settings. Google lists resetting them as an advanced troubleshooting action, followed by a browser restart. Use Chrome’s option to reset all flags to their defaults rather than searching for or changing a particular flag; Google’s documented guidance does not identify one specific flag responsible for Gemini summaries. Resetting flags can also undo other experiments you intentionally enabled, so record any custom settings you may need before proceeding.

Check for device or organization restrictions
If the feature works on a personal, normally installed computer but not in a virtual desktop, remote environment, or managed profile, the environment may be limiting it. Ask the system administrator whether Gemini in Chrome has been disabled or requires explicit enablement for work or school accounts. Google’s availability and troubleshooting guidance identifies both administrative controls and virtualized environments as possible constraints.

- Device: Confirm that the computer is a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows machine. A different desktop platform is not listed in Google’s current desktop availability guidance.
- Chrome: Check that Chrome reports no pending update. If an update is waiting, install it and restart before testing again.
- Profile: Make sure the intended Google account is signed in to Chrome, rather than merely signed in to a website in one tab.
- Window: Test from a standard window. Incognito is explicitly outside the supported setup.
- Language and region: Verify the device language and current location. If you are travelling or using a VPN, test without the VPN so the location check is less likely to be misleading.
- Age and rollout: The account must meet Google’s applicable age requirement, and the feature may simply not have reached the account yet because the rollout is gradual.
- Administration: For a work, school, or otherwise managed profile, ask whether an administrator has enabled Gemini in Chrome.
This audit prevents a common mistake: treating the absence of a side-panel button as evidence that the open article is unreadable. If Gemini is not provisioned for the account, no page reload can create access.
Separate account testing from page testing
Use a simple comparison to identify where the failure occurs. In the same regular Chrome profile, open another ordinary article and ask Gemini for key takeaways. When Gemini is missing from the Chrome side panel

- Use a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer.

- Sign in to Chrome with the account that should receive the feature.

How to interpret common symptoms
The side panel is completely absent
Start with region, language, device, sign-in, age, rollout, Incognito, and administrator checks. These are availability questions, not evidence that the open page cannot be summarized.
The side panel opens but summarizes the wrong tab
Review the shared-tab controls. The current tab is shared by default, but Gemini allows shared tabs to be managed. Select the intended page before asking again.

The panel opens but does not respond
Restart Chrome, update it, and reload the Gemini panel from its right-click menu. If the computer is managed or virtualized, involve the administrator after those browser steps.
Only one article fails
Reload that page and the panel, confirm the tab context, and retry in a normal signed-in window. If the same page continues to fail while other pages work, send feedback with a clear description and optional screenshot.
