Test another available Proton version, restart Steam when the update requires it, and capture a Proton log before deleting prefixes or changing files. A single-game failure usually points toward that title, its selected Proton build, or its per-game prefix; simultaneous failures make the shared Proton tool, Steam Linux Runtime, library filesystem, and graphics driver more important suspects.
What a Proton update can change
Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. It combines Wine components with graphics and audio translation layers so that Steam can launch a Windows game through the Linux client. Each game can be assigned a compatibility tool in its Steam settings, and Steam can install multiple Proton versions side by side.

An update can therefore affect more than the game executable itself. A new Proton build may contain a title-specific fix, introduce a regression for a particular game, alter the runtime environment, or expose a problem in a driver or library mount that was already present. There is no universal “reset Proton” fix. The useful distinction is whether one title changed behavior or a shared component stopped working.
Valve’s rolling Proton changelog records both fixes and regressions by game and Proton version. Treat a changelog entry as evidence about the named game and versions, not as proof that every game using that build is broken.

Start with a low-risk triage
Separate one-game failures from shared failures
Launch a second Windows game that uses Proton, preferably one that was working recently. Record the result:
- Only one game fails: investigate that game’s selected Proton version, recent game update, launch options, and prefix first.
- Several Proton games fail: inspect the shared compatibility-tool files, Steam Linux Runtime, library filesystem, and graphics driver before rebuilding any individual prefix.
- Native Linux games also fail: Proton may not be the primary cause. Look at Steam itself, the GPU driver, the display session, or the library mount.
A report such as “the game begins to launch and then just nothing happens” is a useful description, but it is not a formal error category. Note whether Steam shows a brief “Running” state, whether a process appears and exits, whether a window opens and closes, and whether an explicit error is displayed.
Write down the baseline before changing anything
Capture the following while the failure is reproducible:
- Game title and Steam App ID.
- Selected compatibility tool, including its exact Proton version.
- Distribution and desktop session.
- GPU model and installed graphics-driver version.
- When the game last launched successfully.
- Whether Steam, Proton, the game, the kernel, or the graphics driver changed before the failure.
- The exact launch symptom and any Steam error text.
- Whether other Proton games launch from the same library.
Do not delete the game’s compatibility prefix as a first step. A prefix can contain configuration, mods, controller mappings, or locally stored saves. The available evidence does not establish that deleting a prefix is safe for every title, and cloud synchronization does not guarantee that every local file is recoverable.
Test whether the update caused a title-specific regression
Switch the compatibility tool for one controlled comparison
- In Steam, open Library and right-click the affected game.
- Choose Properties, then open Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool.
- Select another installed Proton version. If the previously working version is still available, use it as the comparison.
- Close the properties window and launch the game without changing other settings.
Keep the game build, launch options, display configuration, and hardware constant. Record whether the game reaches its menu, how long it takes to launch, and whether graphics, audio, input, or online features behave differently. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent recommendation to stay on an older build.
If the alternate version launches, the result strongly narrows the problem to the game/version combination or to a change introduced by the newer tool. Check Valve’s Proton changelog for the game and both Proton versions. If neither version launches, the failure may involve the prefix, shared runtime, filesystem, or driver instead.

Restart Steam when a Proton 11-based update requires it
Valve’s changelog notes that Steam may need to be restarted after it downloads the first Proton 11-based update. This is a version-specific requirement, not a general remedy for all launch failures. Exit Steam completely, confirm that its background process has ended, start it again, and retry the same game before making destructive changes.

Capture a Proton log before attempting repairs
Enable the documented launch option
- Open the game’s Properties in Steam.
- Stay on the General tab and find Launch Options.
- Enter
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Launch the game once, wait for the failure, and then exit Steam or stop the launch attempt.
The Proton FAQ documents a log named steam-<APPID>.log in the user’s home directory. Replace <APPID> with the game’s numeric Steam App ID when locating it. The log can show which Proton build was selected, whether the prefix was created or opened, which graphics path was attempted, and where initialization stopped.
If you need the log somewhere other than the home directory, Proton documents the PROTON_LOG_DIR environment override. Set it together with the logging switch, for example PROTON_LOG=1 PROTON_LOG_DIR=/path/to/log-directory %command%, using a directory that exists and is writable by your user account.
Read the log for evidence, not for one magic error
Look for the first meaningful failure near the end of the launch sequence rather than copying every warning. Useful clues include a failure to load a required DLL, a Vulkan or DXVK initialization error, an inability to create or write to the prefix, a missing runtime component, or an immediate process exit after the game executable starts.
Remove personal information before posting a log. Paths can reveal your username, home-directory layout, mounted volumes, and installed software. Keep the original file privately so you can compare it with a later attempt.

A successful launch with wined3d is a clue about the rendering path; it is not proof that wined3d is the best long-term configuration. Performance and feature support can differ, and the override does not repair a damaged Proton installation or an unrelated prefix problem.
When several games fail: check shared Proton and runtime files
Verify the compatibility tool from the game’s properties
If Steam reports that a compatibility tool failed, or multiple Proton games stop launching together, verify the installed tool files through the game’s compatibility settings. The exact labels can vary with the Steam client, but the per-game properties page provides the compatibility-tool file verification action described in Valve’s incident documentation.
Run verification for the Proton version selected by the affected game and allow Steam to redownload incomplete files. If several games use different Proton versions, identify whether they fail only when they share one tool or whether every Proton build fails. That distinction separates a damaged installation of one tool from a broader runtime or system problem.
Understand “unsupported version 0” as a lead, not a diagnosis
In one Valve issue, entries reported as unsupported version 0 were associated with damaged or incomplete compatibility-tool files. The maintainer recommended verifying Proton and runtime files and checking whether the Steam library was stored on a non-Linux-native filesystem. This is a case-level diagnostic lead, not a guarantee that every occurrence of that message has the same cause.
If ordinary verification is unavailable or does not repair the problem, the same issue contains a reporter’s account of validating runtime app IDs with SteamCMD. Those commands were tied to a particular broken-download state and multiple runtime IDs, so do not treat them as the first universal recovery procedure. Use the normal Steam verification path first and preserve the exact error and log if it fails.
Check the Steam Linux Runtime relationship
Most current-era Proton builds run inside a Steam Linux Runtime container environment. In a Steam compatibility-tool issue, ValveSoftware project member kisak-valve wrote: “Most current era Proton builds run inside the Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 container environment, so if that’s unhealthy, then anything that uses it can’t run.” The comment describes the incident’s runtime dependency; it is not a guarantee about every Proton release or every runtime failure.

Consequently, simultaneous failures can come from the runtime layer even when each game’s files are intact. Check that the relevant Steam Linux Runtime installation is present and complete, and note whether the affected games select the same runtime or library location. Avoid deleting runtime directories manually while Steam is running; use Steam’s own download, verification, and update mechanisms so the client can restore the expected files.
Collect Steam Linux Runtime diagnostics when the container may be involved
Enable both runtime and Proton logging
- Open the affected game’s Properties and locate Launch Options.
- Enter
STEAM_LINUX_RUNTIME_LOG=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Reproduce the launch failure once.
- Find the runtime log in the selected runtime installation’s
var/directory. Valve’s guide describes names such asslr-app*-*.log. - Match the runtime log with the Proton log from the same launch attempt.
The exact runtime directory depends on which Steam Linux Runtime is selected, so do not assume that every installation uses the same path. Include the matching logs when reporting a runtime issue, and remove personal paths before sharing them.
Once the test is complete, remove the diagnostic launch option. Leaving logging enabled can create new files on every launch and make later troubleshooting harder to interpret.
Inspect the Steam library filesystem and mount
Why the library location matters
Proton needs to read game files and create or modify per-game compatibility data. A library that is not mounted consistently, is read-only, has incorrect ownership, or sits on a filesystem with problematic Windows-compatibility semantics can cause launch failures that look like Proton regressions.
A Valve issue connected incomplete tools and unsupported version 0 entries with a recommendation to check whether the library was on a non-Linux-native filesystem. That incident supports checking the filesystem in relevant cases; it does not establish that all NTFS installations fail.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Checks to perform without moving the library immediately
- Confirm the library is mounted before Steam starts and remains mounted during launch.
- Verify that your user can read game files and write to the library and its compatibility-data directories.
- Check that the mount has not silently become read-only after an error or unclean shutdown.
- Look for path changes, duplicate mounts, or a library directory that moved since the game last worked.
- Test one affected game from a known-good Linux-native library only if you already have such a library; keep the original installation intact for comparison.
Do not infer a filesystem cause solely because the game stopped after a Proton update. Use the Proton and runtime logs to see whether file access, prefix creation, or tool extraction actually failed.

Check graphics drivers for newer games and graphics-related symptoms
Valve’s requirements information warns that some newer Steam Play titles require recent graphics drivers. This matters when the failure affects newer games, begins after a graphics stack change, or produces Vulkan, shader, device-creation, black-screen, or immediate-renderer-exit messages in the log.
Use the current driver instructions for your Linux distribution and GPU vendor. Valve’s Ubuntu package examples are dated and should not be copied as current package advice. Distribution repositories, vendor packaging, kernel versions, and supported GPU branches change over time.
Use the symptom to choose the driver check
- Only newer 3D games fail: compare the required Vulkan or feature level with the installed driver and GPU support.
- Every Proton game fails after a driver update: verify that the intended driver is loaded and that Steam sees the correct GPU.
- Native games also fail: prioritize the system graphics stack over a Proton-specific workaround.
- Changing to wined3d alters the result: treat that as evidence about the Vulkan/DXVK path and continue with a proper driver check rather than keeping the override by default.
Use a controlled comparison instead of changing several variables
When comparing two Proton versions for the same game, change one variable at a time. Record the game build and selected tool for each attempt, then compare:
| Comparison | What to record | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Launch result | Does Steam remain running, exit immediately, or open a window? | Separates an early tool/runtime failure from a game-process failure. |
| Menu reachability | Whether the game reaches its main menu | Shows whether initialization succeeds beyond process creation. |
| Graphics | Window, black screen, artifacts, frame pacing, and resolution | Highlights renderer or driver differences. |
| Audio and input | Sound output, controller, keyboard, and mouse behavior | Prevents a partial launch from being marked simply “working.” |
| Time to launch | Approximate time from pressing Play to a usable menu | Identifies regressions that do not end in a visible error. |
| Logs | First relevant error in the Proton and, when enabled, runtime logs | Links the behavior to a specific layer. |
For shared-component testing, compare a failing title with a second Proton title and note whether both use the same compatibility tool, Steam Linux Runtime installation, and Steam library. A single-game failure points first toward that title or version; several simultaneous failures make shared components more important to inspect. This is a diagnostic heuristic, not a definitive causal rule.
Choose the next action from the evidence
| Observed pattern | Next action | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| One game fails; another Proton game launches | Try another Proton version for the affected title, inspect the title/version changelog, and capture a Proton log. | Reinstalling every runtime before checking the title-specific comparison. |
| Several games using one Proton build fail | Verify that Proton build and its runtime files, then retry after restarting Steam. | Assuming every game has a separate broken prefix. |
| Several Proton games fail across versions | Check Steam Linux Runtime files, library mount and permissions, and graphics drivers. | Deleting prefixes one by one without preserving local data. |
| Errors mention Vulkan, DXVK, or device creation | Check the current GPU-driver guidance; use wined3d only as a temporary diagnostic test. | Keeping a rendering override without understanding its trade-offs. |
| Steam cannot update or verify tools | Check that the library and runtime locations are mounted and writable; preserve the error and logs. | Running incident-specific SteamCMD commands as a generic first step. |
| Native and Proton games fail | Investigate Steam, the display session, GPU driver, and filesystem before Proton-specific changes. | Blaming the latest Proton version without a Proton-only comparison. |
Handle prefixes carefully
Each Proton game uses a per-game compatibility prefix. A prefix can retain Windows registry state, installed redistributables, configuration files, mods, and local saves. If the Proton log points to a prefix-specific failure, first back up any important data and check the game’s own save-storage documentation. Then compare with a clean prefix only when you understand what the title stores locally and what Steam Cloud does or does not synchronize.
Changing the selected Proton version is a safer first comparison because it does not require you to erase the prefix. If a clean-prefix test becomes necessary, treat it as an experiment: preserve the original directory, document the selected tool, and do not overwrite the only copy of local saves or configuration.
Prepare a useful bug report
Logs are most useful when paired with a reproducible description. Include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Game name and Steam App ID.
- Selected Proton version and whether another version was tested.
- Distribution, desktop environment or session type, kernel, GPU, and graphics-driver version.
- Whether one game or several fail, and whether native Linux games launch.
- Recent Steam, Proton, game, driver, kernel, filesystem, or mount changes.
- Exact reproduction steps, including the point at which the window disappears or Steam returns to the Play button.
- Proton log from
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Steam Linux Runtime log from
STEAM_LINUX_RUNTIME_LOG=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%when the runtime layer is implicated. - Steam Runtime Diagnostics output when requested by the project or maintainer.
Valve project members have requested Proton and runtime diagnostic artifacts in comparable reports. Attach logs from the same failed attempt, redact personal paths, and state which launch options were active. Do not claim a fix based only on correlation with an update; include the successful and unsuccessful Proton-version results when available.
What not to assume
- There is no published statistic establishing how often Proton updates cause launch failures. Issue reports cannot be used to infer a failure rate.
- A message such as
unsupported version 0does not by itself prove one universal cause. - A non-Linux-native filesystem is a condition to check in relevant cases, not a blanket incompatibility claim.
- A driver command copied from an old Ubuntu example is not automatically correct for a current distribution.
- A successful wined3d launch does not mean the Vulkan path is permanently unusable or that wined3d will provide equivalent performance.
- Deleting a prefix is not a universally safe reset.
- Switching to an older Proton build is a comparison and possible workaround, not proof that the newest build is broken for every user.
Bottom line
Use a reversible sequence: classify the scope, record the selected tool and recent changes, test another Proton version, restart Steam when the Proton 11 changelog calls for it, and capture PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. If multiple games fail, verify Proton and Steam Linux Runtime files, inspect the library mount, and check current graphics-driver guidance. Add runtime diagnostics when the container layer is suspect, and preserve prefixes until you know what data they contain. The logs and the one-game-versus-many-game comparison determine whether the next step belongs to the title, Proton, the shared runtime, the filesystem, or the driver.
