Do not send a second payment just because a wallet says “pending” or times out. First obtain the transaction hash, look it up against a continuously updated validated XRP Ledger, and read the exact result code. A validated tesSUCCESS is final success; a validated tec... is an on-ledger failure; a ter... result is provisional and may still be retried. If the transaction has a LastLedgerSequence, wait for that ledger to validate before deciding that an absent transaction failed.
The reliable way to decide what happened
A wallet’s immediate response is not the final record. Wallet software may show a submission, queue, timeout, or optimistic success before consensus has included the transaction in a validated ledger. The XRP Ledger’s validated result and metadata are authoritative.

- Find the transaction hash. Open the wallet’s transaction details or history and copy the hash. If the wallet timed out, establish whether it actually signed and submitted the transaction before attempting anything else.
- Look up the hash on a server with continuous ledger history. Check the response for
validated: true. A result from an open, candidate, or otherwise unvalidated ledger can change. - Read the exact engine result and metadata. Do not stop at a wallet label such as “failed” or “pending.” The result class, transaction fields, and metadata explain the next action.
- Check expiration. If the transaction contains
LastLedgerSequence, compare it with the latest validated ledger. An absent transaction is not finally expired until that sequence has passed and the transaction is absent from that ledger and all earlier validated ledgers. - Only then decide whether to correct, replace, or resend. A delayed signed transaction can still land, and two transactions using the same account sequence can conflict.

How XRP Ledger result codes work
The first three letters of a result identify how the server and ledger treated the transaction. The complete code matters: two codes in the same class can require different remedies.

Provisional results can change after transactions are reapplied or consensus order changes. Treat a code as conclusive only when the transaction is included in a validated ledger, or when the protocol’s expiration rules make its absence final.
What a validated result tells you
tesSUCCESS: the requested operation succeeded
A validated tesSUCCESS means the requested ledger changes were accepted. Check the transaction metadata to verify the affected account, amount, trust-line or offer changes, and delivered amount where relevant. A wallet that still displays “pending” is showing stale local state; refresh its history rather than sending another transaction.
Validated tec: the transaction consumed a fee but the action failed
A tec result is not merely a rejected network request. The transaction reached a validated ledger, the requested action did not occur, and the transaction cost was destroyed. The account sequence also advances. Some tec codes can produce bookkeeping effects, so inspect metadata instead of assuming that nothing changed.
tecDST_TAG_NEEDED: the destination requires a destination tag, but the payment omitted it.tecINSUFFICIENT_RESERVEand other reserve-related results: the account cannot meet the XRP reserve or an additional reserve requirement created by the transaction.tecUNFUNDED: the account does not have enough spendable funds for the requested operation.tecPATH_DRY: the selected payment path has no usable liquidity.tecPATH_PARTIAL: the requested path could not deliver the required payment result.
These examples are diagnostic categories, not substitutes for reading the exact code returned by your transaction.

terQUEUED and terSUBMITTED: still provisional
terQUEUED means the transaction was queued for a future ledger; terSUBMITTED means it was submitted but not yet applied. Neither is a validated success or failure. Keep checking the hash, and monitor LastLedgerSequence if present. A queued transaction can later succeed, receive another provisional result, or expire.
tef and tem: inspect the exact code
A tef result is not included in a ledger, but finality depends on the code. For example, tefMAX_LEDGER relates to a transaction whose LastLedgerSequence has passed. A tem result points to malformed construction or invalid supplied fields and is generally not applied to a ledger. Correct the transaction rather than retrying an unchanged payload.
Using LastLedgerSequence to determine expiration
LastLedgerSequence is the transaction’s expiration boundary. It makes an outcome deterministic: the transaction must be included no later than the ledger identified by that value.

- Read the transaction’s
LastLedgerSequence. - Find the latest ledger that your server reports as validated.
- If the latest validated index is lower than the boundary, the transaction may still be included. Continue monitoring it.
- After the boundary ledger has validated, search that ledger and every earlier validated ledger in the server’s continuous history.
- If the transaction is absent from all of them, it has immutably failed by expiration. Only at that point is it safe to prepare a replacement using a new sequence and current fee conditions.
Checking an unvalidated or incomplete ledger history can produce a false conclusion. Use a server that can reliably provide the relevant validated ledgers.

Fees, spendable XRP, and account sequence
Why the displayed balance can be misleading
The XRP balance shown by a wallet is not necessarily the amount available to send. XRPL accounts must maintain a protocol-defined reserve, and objects such as trust lines or offers can create additional reserve requirements. Before correcting a payment, calculate spendable XRP after the current reserve and any object-creation cost. Reserve parameters can change, so use the current official reserve information rather than hard-coding an amount in a procedure.
Pre-relay versus on-ledger fee failures
If a transaction cannot be relayed because its fee is too low, a server may return terINSUF_FEE_B before the transaction is included. If the transaction has already been distributed and the sender’s balance becomes insufficient, it can instead be included with tecINSUFF_FEE. The latter is a validated ledger result: the fee is consumed and the sequence advances.
Why sequence numbers matter when replacing a transaction
Each account transaction uses a sequence number. Two different signed transactions using the same sequence compete with one another. If the original is delayed and later applied, a replacement may fail or create an unexpected outcome. Resolve the original hash and expiration status first; do not “clear” a pending wallet screen by submitting another payment blindly.
Fixes for the most common failure branches
The recipient says no funds arrived, but you see tesSUCCESS
Verify that the hash is the recipient’s transaction, that the lookup reports validated: true, and that metadata shows the intended destination and delivered amount. For hosted or exchange-style destinations, confirm whether a destination tag was required and whether the recipient’s system has credited the validated payment. A successful ledger transaction cannot be undone by refreshing the wallet, so the next investigation is destination identification and recipient-side accounting.

tecDST_TAG_NEEDED
The destination account requires a destination tag and the failed payment did not include one. Obtain the recipient’s exact tag instructions, then construct a new payment with the correct destination and tag. The original attempt already consumed its fee and sequence because it was validated.
Reserve, unfunded, or insufficient-balance result
Compare the account’s total XRP with its spendable amount after reserve. Include any reserve increase caused by creating a ledger object, and leave enough XRP for the transaction fee. Do not assume that a small displayed balance can be sent in full. Correct the amount or fund the account, then create a new transaction.
tecPATH_DRY or tecPATH_PARTIAL
These payment-path failures concern liquidity or the amount that could be delivered through the selected path. Recheck the send and receive currencies, issued-asset identifiers, transfer settings, and requested amount. A corrected transaction may need a different path or a lower amount; do not repeat the same path without changing the condition that caused the failure.

terQUEUED or terSUBMITTED
Keep the hash and continue querying a validated ledger. Check the expiration boundary and current account sequence. If it validates, follow the final tes or tec result. If it expires and is absent from the complete validated history, prepare a replacement; until then, another transaction can collide with the original sequence.
tefMAX_LEDGER or another expired transaction
Compare the latest validated ledger with LastLedgerSequence. A code or wallet label alone is not enough: confirm that the boundary has passed and that the transaction is absent from the boundary ledger and all earlier validated ledgers. Then rebuild the payment with a current sequence and appropriate fee.
A tem result or malformed transaction
Recheck the transaction type, source and destination addresses, currency and issuer fields, amount encoding, destination tag, fee, sequence, and any fields required by that transaction type. Correct the construction before signing again. Because malformed transactions are not applied, there is no successful ledger operation to reverse, but a separately submitted attempt may still need its own status check.

A timeout is a user-interface event, not proof that no transaction exists. First determine whether the wallet produced a signed transaction and hash. If it did, query that hash on the intended network and check validated status. If it did not, no ledger transaction can be confirmed from the timeout alone.

- Check the destination, tag, amount, fee, and account sequence in the signed transaction details.
- Use a ledger-history source that can search validated ledgers rather than only an open ledger.
- If the hash is absent, inspect whether the wallet failed before submission; do not assume that a new payment is safe until the account sequence and any prior signed submission are understood.
Exact menu names vary by wallet, so rely on the transaction hash, network selection, and validated ledger response rather than a generic “retry” button.
How long should confirmation take?
An official XRPL Send XRP tutorial says that most transactions are accepted into the next ledger version and that the final outcome may take about 4–7 seconds. That is typical tutorial guidance, not a network-wide measurement or a service guarantee. Network load, connectivity, server health, transaction fee, and queue conditions can make confirmation take longer. A transaction remains unresolved until its validated result is known or its expiration is proven.

Preventing avoidable failures
- Copy the destination address and destination tag exactly from the recipient’s current instructions.
- Review the network setting before signing; a valid hash on one network is not a payment on another.
- Leave room for the account reserve and transaction fee instead of attempting to send the entire displayed XRP balance.
- Capture the hash immediately after submission and keep it with the payment record.
- Use
LastLedgerSequenceso a transaction has a clear expiration point. - Use validated ledger lookups for reconciliation, accounting, and support requests.
- When a transaction fails, preserve its complete result code and metadata; a screenshot of a wallet’s “failed” label is rarely enough to diagnose it.
