When an Excel tab, button, add-in, or command disappears, do not reinstall immediately. First determine whether the feature is included in your Excel platform and license, then check the signed-in account, add-in state, and organization policy. Only after those checks should you isolate startup conflicts, update Office, or repair the installation.
This sequence separates an expected limitation from a configuration problem, a policy restriction, and a genuine software fault.

Start by identifying exactly what is wrong
“Excel feature missing” can describe several different symptoms. Record the exact command or tab name before changing settings, because the correct remedy depends on the symptom.

Also record whether you are using Excel for Windows, Mac, the web or a mobile app; the product name and version/build; the account type (personal, work or school); the workbook involved; and when the behavior began. A command documented for Windows desktop may not exist in Excel for Mac or Excel for the web, so instructions cannot safely be transferred between platforms.

Confirm that your platform and edition include the feature
A missing command is not automatically evidence of a broken installation. Excel capabilities vary by platform, edition, subscription and tenant policy. Find the feature’s official availability requirements before changing files or reinstalling Office.
Platform differences matter
- Windows desktop: supports the broadest set of desktop add-ins, including COM add-ins. Some commands exist only here.
- Mac: has a different add-in model and does not expose every Windows command or management dialog.
- Excel for the web: provides a browser feature set and can omit desktop automation, COM technology and some advanced analysis tools.
- Mobile: focuses on editing and viewing; desktop-only commands should not be expected.
When documentation says “Excel,” check which platform it means. A feature absent from a web or mobile app may be working as designed rather than malfunctioning.
Example: why Inquire may be missing
Microsoft states that Spreadsheet Inquire is available only in Excel for Windows with Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise plans and equivalent editions. If Inquire is not present in the Windows COM Add-ins list, Microsoft says the Office edition may exclude it or an administrator may have made it unavailable. Installing the same feature on an unsupported edition will not create the command.
Check workbook context before treating a disabled command as a defect
Open a new blank workbook and try the command there. If it works in the blank workbook but not in one file, the cause is likely workbook state, protection, file format, permissions or content rather than Excel-wide availability. If it is missing in every workbook, continue with entitlement, add-in and policy checks.
Verify the signed-in account and subscription
Subscription features are tied to the account that owns the active entitlement. Reinstalling Excel while it is signed in with the wrong account does not restore a feature.

- Open Excel’s account or subscription area and note the email address currently signed in.
- For a personal Microsoft 365 subscription, verify that this is the account that purchased or receives the subscription and that the subscription is active.
- For a work or school installation, open the organization’s account or subscription page and check whether the assigned license includes the required Office apps or feature.
- If the organization license is missing, expired or different from what you were promised, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass activation.
- Close and reopen Excel after correcting the account or license so that the entitlement can refresh.
Microsoft’s subscription-visibility guidance addresses cases in which features such as Dictate, Designer and Editor do not appear after a genuine Microsoft 365 subscription is acquired. That guidance is relevant to account verification, but it does not prove that every missing Excel command is caused by licensing. Edition, platform, add-in and policy checks still apply.
Install or enable the required add-in
Many Excel capabilities are optional add-ins. An add-in can be installed but inactive, or unavailable because of an Office edition or administrator setting.

Regular Excel add-ins
- In Excel, choose Home > Add-ins.
- Open My Add-ins and look for the intended add-in.
- If it is not installed, use the available add-in installation option and complete the prompts.
- Select the installed add-in to activate it, then close and reopen the workbook or Excel if requested.
If the add-in does not appear in My Add-ins, verify the signed-in account, internet access, platform support and organization policy. An add-in designed for Windows desktop may not be offered in the web or mobile app.
Windows COM add-ins
- Choose File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
- Select Go.
- Check the required entry and choose OK.
- Restart Excel if the add-in adds a ribbon tab or command.
If an entry is listed but unchecked, activation may restore the command. If it is absent, the add-in may not be installed, the edition may not support it, or policy may prevent it. Do not download an unapproved replacement on a managed computer; ask IT to confirm the approved package.
Check whether your organization intentionally restricted the feature
Work and school devices can enforce settings that hide or disable commands, add-ins and automation. Microsoft identifies security and compliance requirements, restrictions on unapproved or insecure tools, and product deprecation as possible reasons.

An organization-restriction message is important evidence: treat the behavior as a policy decision until an administrator confirms otherwise. Microsoft’s wording for this situation is, “This is not an error on your part. The feature is working as expected, but your organization has chosen to restrict it.” Do not attempt to circumvent the policy by editing the registry, installing a personal copy or using an alternate account.
Send your help desk the exact feature name, the wording of the restriction message, your device type and whether the same command is available in a personal, unmanaged installation. IT can determine whether the restriction is tenant-wide, group-specific, temporary or intentional.
Separate a missing feature from an Excel conflict
Safe Mode is aimed at freezes, launch failures and behavior caused by add-ins or startup customizations. It is not the first remedy for a command that is simply unavailable in your edition.
Test Windows Excel in Safe Mode
- Close all Excel windows.
- Open the Windows Run dialog.
- Enter
Excel /safeand press Enter. - Try the action that normally freezes or fails.
Safe Mode bypasses add-ins and some startup customizations. If the problem disappears, close Safe Mode and launch Excel normally, then continue with the isolation steps below. If Excel behaves the same way in Safe Mode, an add-in is less likely to be the cause; return to edition, account, workbook, policy and update checks.
Disable and re-enable add-ins one at a time
- Start Excel normally and open File > Options > Add-ins.
- Use the Manage selector to inspect COM add-ins and other available add-in categories.
- Disable the suspected add-in or all nonessential add-ins.
- Restart Excel and reproduce the problem.
- Re-enable one add-in, restart Excel, and test again.
- Repeat until the conflicting add-in is identified.
Restarting after each change matters because many add-ins load only when Excel starts. Once a conflict is identified, update it, remove it if permitted, or ask the publisher or IT department for a compatible version.

Inspect startup folders when Excel opens unwanted content or fails at launch
Excel can load workbooks, templates and other files from the XLStart folder or an alternate startup folder. A damaged or incompatible file there can make Excel appear broken before you open a workbook yourself. Temporarily move startup files to a backup location, restart Excel, and test. Do not delete them until you know they are no longer needed.
Use the automated troubleshooter carefully
Microsoft’s automated Excel troubleshooter can disable add-ins, move startup files and rename toolbar files. It may also change registry settings. Follow Microsoft’s instruction to back up the registry and startup files before running it, and make sure you can restore those backups. This tool is appropriate for persistent hangs and startup failures, not as a routine response to a missing button.
Install updates and check current known issues
After entitlement, configuration and conflict checks, install applicable Office and Windows updates. Updates can fix a command that appears but errors, a crash introduced by an add-in interface, or a compatibility problem between Excel and Windows.
Then consult Microsoft’s Excel for Windows known-issues page for a symptom that matches your build and platform. The page was last updated in September 2026 and labels entries FIXED, WORKAROUND, INVESTIGATING or BY DESIGN. These statuses change, so read the current entry rather than relying on an old forum workaround. A “BY DESIGN” result points back to edition, policy or product behavior; a “WORKAROUND” result may apply only to a specific build or configuration.

Targeted fixes for common Excel complaints
“My Excel tab disappeared”
First determine whether the tab belongs to an add-in or a built-in feature. Check the platform and edition, then inspect Home > Add-ins and, on Windows, File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: COM Add-ins > Go. If the entry is enabled but the tab still does not appear, restart Excel and test a blank workbook. A policy restriction or unsupported edition cannot be fixed by toggling the ribbon.
“An Excel button is greyed out”
Try the command in a new workbook and with a different selection. Note whether the file is read-only, protected or in a format that limits the operation. If the command is disabled everywhere, return to feature availability, license and policy checks; if it is disabled only in one file, investigate that workbook’s state.
“My Excel add-in is not showing”
Confirm that it is installed for the current account, activate it from the appropriate add-in manager, and verify that its platform is supported. On managed devices, ask IT whether the add-in is approved or blocked. Missing entries in the COM list can indicate an unsupported edition rather than a damaged installation.
“Excel freezes when I open it”
Use Excel /safe. If Safe Mode works, disable add-ins and re-enable them individually with a restart between tests. If the problem persists, inspect XLStart and alternate startup folders, back up before using Microsoft’s automated troubleshooter, and install updates.
“The feature worked yesterday but now errors”
Record the exact error, recent Office or Windows updates, changed add-ins and whether all workbooks are affected. Check the live known-issues page for a matching entry and status. Do not assume that a recently changed feature is permanently broken; a documented workaround or fix may be available for your build.
Escalate with information that shortens the diagnosis
Contact organizational IT for managed devices or Microsoft support when the checks above do not resolve the problem. Include:
- Exact feature, tab, command or add-in name.
- Excel platform, product edition and version/build.
- Personal, work or school account and the relevant subscription or license.
- Whether the feature appears in Home > Add-ins or the Windows COM Add-ins list.
- Whether one workbook, every workbook, one user or several users are affected.
- Full error text and a screenshot if permitted by your organization.
- Recent updates, newly installed add-ins or policy changes.
- Whether the issue reproduces in Safe Mode.
Microsoft separates support routes for activation or disabled features, freezing, printing, missing worksheet tabs and editing problems. Choosing the route that matches your symptom and supplying the details above prevents repeated basic checks.
A compact decision path
- Identify the symptom and scope. Name the exact command and test a blank workbook.
- Confirm platform and edition. Check whether the feature is supported on Windows, Mac, web or mobile and under your plan.
- Verify the account and license. Use the account that owns the personal subscription or ask the organization administrator to verify the assigned license.
- Check add-ins. Install or activate regular add-ins from Home > Add-ins; manage Windows COM add-ins from File > Options > Add-ins.
- Ask about policy. Treat restriction messages and missing enterprise features as potential administrator decisions.
- Isolate conflicts. For hangs and startup failures, test
Excel /safe, then add-ins and startup folders. - Update and check live issues. Apply Office and Windows updates and review the current Microsoft known-issues status.
- Escalate with evidence. Provide the platform, build, license, scope, error and Safe Mode result.
This order avoids two costly mistakes: trying to repair a feature your edition never included, and changing system files before checking an add-in or administrator policy.
