Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf an ESP32-C6 will not commission through chip-tool, first identify where the process stops: BLE discovery, exchange of the onboarding payload, assignment to a Matter fabric, or the later Wi-Fi or Thread network connection. Then verify that the controller, command, firmware build and target actually support the path you selected. A BLE command documented for another ESP32 target is not proof that the same command works with an ESP32-C6 controller.

What Matter commissioning is—and what a failure actually means
Commissioning is the process of adding a Matter node to a fabric. It establishes the node’s operational identity and supplies the credentials it needs to communicate on its destination network. The process is not one single Bluetooth operation, so “Bluetooth does not work” can describe several different failures.
- Discovery and transport: the commissioner finds the device, commonly over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) during initial setup or over IP when the device is already reachable.
- Onboarding authentication: the commissioner uses a QR code or manual setup code to authenticate the device.
- Network provisioning: the device receives or applies Wi-Fi credentials or Thread network information, depending on the commissioning route and firmware.
- Operational commissioning: the node receives its fabric identity and operational credentials and becomes reachable through its operational network.
A failure in the first stage needs different checks from a device that appears over BLE but cannot join Wi-Fi or Thread. Record the last successful stage before changing anything.

Start by documenting the exact setup
Do not begin by changing several settings or trying random pairing commands. Write down the configuration that produced the failure. This prevents a controller-side problem from being mistaken for a device firmware problem and makes a later comparison meaningful.
| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Device | ESP32-C6 board model, hardware revision and MAC or other identifying information | Different boards and revisions can expose different peripherals or firmware assumptions. |
| Firmware | Example or application name, build configuration, ESP-Matter release or branch, and ESP-IDF release or branch | Commissioning features and controller support vary by target and software version. |
| Commissioner | chip-tool version, host operating system, or the companion controller application |
The commissioner determines which pairing methods and transports are available. |
| Command or flow | The complete command line, including arguments, or the exact application screens used | Small argument or payload errors can look like a radio failure. |
| Network | Wi-Fi or Thread, network name, whether the device is already configured, and the presence of a Thread Border Router | IP and Thread commissioning require different infrastructure. |
Keep two roles separate in your notes: an ESP32-C6 device being commissioned by another controller, and an ESP32-C6 running as a Matter controller. Support for a commissioning method can differ between those roles. Espressif’s C6 controller documentation specifically marks its BLE Wi-Fi and BLE Thread controller examples as supported for ESP32-S3. That target qualification must be checked before applying those examples to an ESP32-C6 controller build.
Choose the intended commissioning path before troubleshooting
Method names are not interchangeable. Select the row that describes your intended setup and verify that the target, build and network match it.

ESP32-C6 includes 802.15.4 as well as Wi-Fi and BLE, making it suitable for Matter Thread devices. That does not mean every C6 application is configured for Thread, nor that every controller build supports every BLE pairing method. Check the example’s build target and commissioning mode rather than inferring support from the chip’s radio capabilities.

Prepare the board, cable and capture setup
The ESP32-C6-DevKitC-1 is a development board with Wi-Fi, BLE and Thread functions. Its USB interfaces are used for power, flashing and communication, so it is useful when you need repeatable firmware builds and serial logs. A USB-A-to-USB-C cable must carry data for programming and console communication; a charge-only cable may power the board while leaving the data lines disconnected.
- Use a known data-capable cable and connect the board directly to the host while diagnosing it.
- Confirm which serial device appears before and after reset, and note the baud rate used by the example.
- Keep the board powered consistently between attempts. Do not change the cable, USB port, firmware and network at the same time.
- Open a serial capture before pressing reset so the boot log and commissioning output are retained.
The cable and development board can make flashing and logging possible, but neither fixes a Matter protocol error, an invalid setup code or a missing network service.
When BLE discovery or provisioning fails
1. Validate the command instead of guessing its syntax
Run the help for the command installed on your host:
chip-tool pairing ble-wifi --help
Compare the required arguments with the command you actually ran. Check node identifiers, setup-code or payload arguments, network credentials and any options that select the controller or interface. Do not paste a BLE Wi-Fi or BLE Thread example from an ESP32-S3 guide into an ESP32-C6 controller build without confirming that the feature is enabled and supported for that target and release.

2. Confirm host Bluetooth independently
Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the computer or device running chip-tool. A disabled adapter, a host without a usable Bluetooth controller, permissions that prevent access to the adapter, or another process holding the adapter can prevent discovery before the ESP32-C6 is contacted. Verify the adapter using the host’s normal Bluetooth tools, then retry with the same firmware and command. If the host cannot provide BLE, stop treating repeated BLE retries as a device test; use the on-network fallback only after preparing the device for it.
3. Check the commissioning window and onboarding payload
The device must have an open commissioning window when the commissioner attempts discovery. Confirm that the firmware has entered its commissioning mode and has not timed out or already been commissioned into another state. Obtain the onboarding payload from the device’s QR code or its documented manual setup code. Enter every digit exactly; an incorrect payload can produce an authentication or commissioning failure that looks like a radio problem.
4. Use the documented Wi-Fi fallback when BLE is the blocker
Espressif’s FAQ documents a workaround for a BLE issue: connect the device to Wi-Fi through its console, then use on-network pairing. The console command is:

chip-tool pairing onnetwork <arguments-for-your-build>
Use chip-tool pairing onnetwork --help to see the exact arguments for that build; do not assume a command copied from a different release. This is a documented fallback, not a universal repair. It applies only when the firmware exposes the console Wi-Fi command, the device can join the network, and the commissioner can reach it over that network.
If the device reaches the network stage
Wi-Fi path
Once BLE discovery and onboarding have succeeded, check the Wi-Fi path separately from Matter authentication.
- Verify the SSID and password supplied to the device. Watch for hidden whitespace, changed credentials or a different band or security mode than the firmware supports.
- Confirm from the serial log that the device obtained a usable network address and did not repeatedly associate and disconnect.
- Check that the commissioner and device are on reachable network segments. Client isolation, VLAN rules or blocked local discovery can prevent an on-network controller from finding a successfully connected node.
- Use the on-network command only after the device is configured for Wi-Fi. An on-network method cannot make an unconfigured device join Wi-Fi by itself.
Keep the layers distinct: a successful Wi-Fi association does not prove that Matter operational commissioning completed, and a Matter authentication error does not prove that the radio failed.
Thread path
Thread commissioning requires more than an enabled 802.15.4 radio. Verify that the application was built for Thread, that the intended commissioning route supplies the correct Thread dataset, and that a Thread Border Router is present and connected to the home IP network. Without a reachable Border Router, a Thread node may be healthy while the controller cannot reach it operationally.

Thread and Wi-Fi use different network infrastructure. Do not troubleshoot a Thread failure by changing Wi-Fi credentials unless the implementation explicitly uses Wi-Fi for a separate commissioning or backhaul step. Confirm the dataset and Border Router state in the tools appropriate to your Thread network, then correlate those observations with the ESP32-C6 UART log.
Implementation-specific caution for Arduino examples
Arduino’s Matter documentation distinguishes CHIPoBLE commissioning from on-network modes: in CHIPoBLE commissioning, the hub supplies network credentials or a Thread dataset; in an on-network mode, the sketch is already configured for its network. That distinction is useful for understanding the two flows, but it is Arduino-specific guidance. Do not generalize its API names, defaults or settings to every ESP-Matter application. Check the framework and release used by your project.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Observed symptom | Most useful next check | What a result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| No device appears during BLE discovery | Verify the host Bluetooth adapter, commissioning window, target support and command syntax | Failure before onboarding points to transport, controller capability or device state. |
| Device appears but pairing rejects the code | Regenerate or re-read the QR or manual setup payload and confirm the device is in the expected commissioning state | This isolates onboarding authentication from radio visibility. |
| BLE provisioning starts but Wi-Fi joining fails | Inspect credentials, firmware network mode and serial association logs | The BLE link worked; the destination network or build configuration is now the likely layer. |
| Wi-Fi connects but on-network pairing cannot find the node | Check IP reachability, local discovery, network isolation and the exact on-network command | The device may be online while the controller is blocked from discovering or reaching it. |
| Thread provisioning completes but the node is unreachable | Verify the Thread dataset, Thread configuration and Border Router connectivity | The remaining fault is in Thread infrastructure or operational reachability, not necessarily BLE. |
| The device crashes during commissioning | Capture the complete UART log, preserve the built ELF and obtain a debugger backtrace if GDB is enabled | A crash requires firmware-level analysis rather than repeated pairing attempts. |
Change one relevant variable per experiment. For example, keep the firmware and payload fixed while changing only the host Bluetooth adapter; then restore that variable and test the on-network route. Preserve the exact failing command so a successful workaround does not erase the evidence of the original failure.
A reproducible workflow for an ESP-Matter issue
- Start from a known firmware state. Build the unmodified default example for the ESP32-C6 target. Record the ESP-Matter and ESP-IDF release or branch used for that build.
- Record the hardware. Note the ESP32-C6 board and revision, USB port, cable and power arrangement. Confirm that the serial console is receiving data.
- Capture from boot. Start a complete UART log before reset. Include boot messages, commissioning-window messages, network events, errors and the final failure.
- Capture the controller side. Save the complete
chip-tooloutput, including the command, version information and any error codes. Do not copy only the last line. - Reproduce with one path. Use the intended BLE, on-network or payload-based route exactly as documented for the target and build. Note the time and the step at which it stops.
- Test one controlled alternative. If BLE is unavailable, try the documented console Wi-Fi setup followed by on-network pairing, provided the firmware supports that route. If the destination is Thread, verify the Border Router and dataset instead of switching randomly to Wi-Fi.
- Compare with the default example. If the default example commissions successfully, reapply application changes one at a time. If it fails identically, the issue is more likely in the environment, target support or framework configuration.
- Package a crash report. For a crash, include the built ELF and a debugger backtrace when GDB is enabled, along with the UART and controller logs.
This package lets a maintainer distinguish an unsupported controller method from a malformed payload, a host-Bluetooth problem, a network-infrastructure fault or an application regression.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a C6 device with a C6 controller: radio capabilities on the chip do not establish that the controller implementation supports every pairing command.
- Assuming BLE is required for every route: an already configured device may be commissioned on-network, while an unconfigured device generally needs a provisioning route that supplies network information.
- Repeating a timed-out commissioning attempt: reopen the commissioning window and verify the payload before retrying.
- Treating a charge-only cable as a software failure: power without USB data prevents flashing and reliable serial capture.
- Using Wi-Fi checks for a Thread problem: Thread needs the correct dataset and a reachable Border Router.
- Generalizing an Arduino example: framework-specific commissioning modes and settings may not match an ESP-Matter project.
- Changing multiple variables: a new host, firmware, command and network at once makes the result impossible to interpret.
When to stop retrying and escalate
Escalate after you can reproduce the failure on the unmodified default example and have preserved both sides of the trace. Include the exact board and revision, firmware example, ESP-Matter and ESP-IDF versions or branches, controller and chip-tool version, complete command, network type, complete UART log and complete controller log. Include the built ELF and GDB backtrace for crashes. State whether the device was acting as a Matter node or controller and identify the last successful commissioning stage.
There is no single fix for every ESP32-C6 Matter pairing failure. The reliable approach is to identify the commissioning path, verify target-specific support, test the transport and network layers independently, and preserve a reproducible record of the result.
