A hash returned when you submit an Aptos transaction proves only that a node accepted the submission request. It does not prove that the transaction committed. Check the hash through Aptos’s transaction-by-hash API or wait operation, then classify the result as pending, committed success, committed failure, or not found. For pending transactions, inspect account sequencing, expiration, gas limits, gas price, balance, and simulation before deciding whether to wait or submit anything again.
Start with the transaction’s actual chain status
Do not use a wallet spinner, a submission timestamp, or the presence of a hash as proof of settlement. Aptos separates submission from commitment: a transaction can be accepted by an API node and remain in the mempool, commit successfully, commit with an execution failure, expire, or be rejected before execution.

| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | The hash is known or still being processed, but no committed result is available. | Poll by hash or use the wait-by-hash operation. Check expiration and earlier transactions from the same account before replacing it. |
Committed with success: true |
The transaction executed successfully at the chain level. | Verify the resulting state or transfer in the response and in the relevant account or resource. |
Committed with success: false |
Execution reached the chain, failed, and is final. The intended state change was discarded. | Read vm_status, correct the cause, and create a new transaction only if appropriate. |
| Not found | The queried node has no transaction record for that hash at the time of the request. | Do not immediately resubmit. Confirm the hash and network, determine whether submission reached a node, and check the sender’s sequence state. |
A committed failed transaction is not a reversible pending transaction. Aptos’s payments documentation states: “A committed failed transaction is still final (it will not reverse), but the transfer did not happen.” Treat success: false as a completed failure, not as a successful transfer with a delayed display.
Step 1: Look up the hash and wait for commitment
Use the transaction-by-hash operation
Use the Aptos node or configured API endpoint for the same network on which you submitted the transaction. The REST operation is GET /transactions/by_hash/{hash}. Replace {hash} with the exact 0x-prefixed transaction hash, preserving every character. This lookup is the authoritative starting point for a delayed transaction.

Aptos also documents a wait-by-hash operation. It waits for a pending transaction to commit instead of requiring you to write your own polling loop. If you implement polling, request the hash at a measured interval and stop when the response contains a committed transaction or when the transaction’s expiration has passed. No universal settlement-time guarantee applies under arbitrary network conditions, so avoid promising a fixed number of seconds.
Record the fields that determine the next action
- Transaction status and commitment: distinguish a pending response from a committed response.
success: use the Boolean value only after commitment is established.vm_status: read it for a committed execution failure.- Sender and sequence number: identify ordering dependencies for a sequenced transaction.
expiration_timestamp_secs: compare it with current chain time and the transaction’s intended validity window.max_gas_amountandgas_unit_price: check the fee ceiling and selection price used by the signed transaction.
Keep the hash, network, sender address, submission response, and API error body together. This prevents a common mistake: checking a correctly formatted hash against the wrong network or a different node configuration and then concluding that the transaction disappeared.
Step 2: Decide whether the transaction is pending, successful, failed, or genuinely unknown
Pending
A pending transaction has not produced a committed result. Continue checking by hash while it remains within its expiration window. A later transaction from the same account can also appear stuck because Aptos must preserve the account’s sequence order; the earlier transaction may be the real bottleneck.
Do not sign a replacement merely because a wallet interface still shows a spinner. First inspect the sender’s current sequence number and any other hashes submitted by that account. A replacement that reuses an active sequence number can create another conflict rather than resolve the first one.
Committed success
When the committed response reports success: true, the transaction succeeded at the chain level. Use the response’s events, changes, or resulting resources to verify the particular transfer, contract call, or state update you intended. A user-interface balance can lag behind the chain query, but that is a display or indexing issue rather than an uncommitted transaction.
Committed failure
When the response reports success: false, inspect vm_status for the execution error. The transaction consumed its place in the chain’s history and will not later turn into a success. Its intended state change did not occur, so a new signed transaction is required after you correct the payload, account state, permissions, or fee parameters identified by the VM status.

Not found
A missing lookup result is not a universal safe-to-retry signal. Possible explanations include an incorrect hash, the wrong network or API endpoint, a submission that never reached the node, expiration or rejection before execution, or a node that cannot currently return the record. Check the sender’s current sequence number and the original submission response. If the sequence advanced, a transaction from that account may have been accepted even though the particular lookup is inconclusive; do not blindly reuse that sequence number.

How sequenced transactions are ordered
Aptos’s accounts documentation states: “Every sequenced transaction must carry the sender’s next sequence number.” For ordinary sequenced transactions, each account advances through a contiguous sequence. The node forwards transactions when it can form that contiguous series; a gap prevents later transactions from progressing.
This creates two common delay patterns:
- An earlier transaction from the same account is still pending, so a later transaction waits behind it.
- A transaction was submitted with a sequence number higher than the account’s next expected value, leaving a gap that cannot execute until the missing sequence is supplied.
Inspect the account and outstanding hashes
- Read the sender account’s current sequence state from the same Aptos network.
- List every hash recently submitted by that account, including transactions created by another wallet tab, service, or automation.
- Sort those transactions by sequence number and identify the lowest sequence that has not committed.
- Check that transaction by hash before touching later transactions.
- Only after the sequence chain is understood should you decide whether to wait, allow expiration, or create a corrected replacement.
Do not assume that paying more for a later transaction bypasses this dependency. A higher gas unit price can improve selection priority for a future block, but it does not dictate execution order inside a block and does not remove same-account sequencing requirements.
Changing the gas price for an in-flight sequence
If you raise the gas price for a stuck sequenced transaction, Aptos cautions that earlier sequenced transactions may also need to be resubmitted at the higher price. Repricing only the later transaction can leave the earlier dependency as the cause of the delay. Preserve sequence continuity and avoid creating two competing signed transactions for the same sequence unless your wallet or application has a documented replacement strategy.
Step 4: Distinguish sequenced and orderless transactions
Sequenced transactions
Sequenced transactions use the sender account’s next sequence number. Their status is checked by hash, but their ability to progress also depends on every earlier sequence from that account. Account sequence inspection is therefore central to diagnosing a pending or apparently missing sequenced transaction.
Orderless transactions
Orderless transactions use a nonce and set the sequence-number field to u64::MAX. Aptos’s documented orderless-transaction design limits their expiration window to no more than 60 seconds in the future. Check an orderless transaction by its hash and its nonce-based status; do not infer that it landed from ordinary account sequence progress.

The short validity window changes the retry decision. If the orderless transaction is beyond its documented expiration window and no committed result exists, investigate the original submission and construct a new transaction with a fresh nonce only after confirming that the first one did not commit. The 60-second rule is a protocol limit, not a promise that every orderless transaction commits within 60 seconds.
Step 5: Verify expiration, gas limits, gas price, and funds
Expiration
The REST transaction representation includes expiration_timestamp_secs. Compare that value with current chain time and identify whether the transaction is still eligible for inclusion. A transaction that expires cannot be revived by waiting longer; it needs a new signed transaction if the intended action is still required. The permitted window depends on the transaction mode: orderless transactions have the documented maximum of 60 seconds, while sequenced transactions may use a longer expiration selected by the application or wallet.
Maximum gas amount
max_gas_amount is the transaction’s fee ceiling in gas units. Aptos states that total execution and storage gas must not exceed this ceiling; otherwise execution aborts. A low ceiling can therefore produce a committed failure even when the account has enough balance to pay a larger fee.

Gas unit price and selection priority
gas_unit_price affects the fee offered per gas unit and can improve the chance that a transaction is selected for a forthcoming block during congestion. It is a prioritization tool, not an execution-order command. It cannot bypass an earlier sequence, repair a sequence gap, or force a transaction that has already committed with success: false to succeed.
Account balance
The sender must retain enough funds to pay the transaction fee. A transfer that sends away the entire fee-paying balance can fail because the account cannot cover gas, even though the transfer amount itself appears valid. Check the account balance after accounting for the maximum possible fee, not merely the amount you intend to send.
Simulate the exact payload
Before signing another attempt, run an on-chain simulation of the exact transaction payload, sender, sequence or nonce, and relevant arguments. Use its gas estimate and execution result to adjust max_gas_amount, payload values, or account funding. Gas depends on instructions, storage, and payload; the live gas schedule is on-chain and can change, so an illustrative number from an old example is not a guaranteed fee.

Step 6: Read API and VM errors instead of guessing
| Error or signal | Layer | Interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|---|
sequence_number_too_old |
API or admission | The submitted sequence is behind the account’s current expected state. | Refresh account sequence state and determine which transaction advanced it before signing again. |
vm_error |
Execution | The virtual machine reported an execution problem. | Read the complete message and vm_status; fix the payload, permissions, resources, or arguments. |
rejected_by_filter |
Node admission | The node rejected the submission through an admission filter. | Capture the response message and verify endpoint policy, transaction format, and network. |
health_check_failed |
Node or service | The submission path did not pass a health check. | Confirm the configured Aptos endpoint is healthy and retry only after verifying whether the original request was accepted. |
mempool_is_full |
Node mempool | The node could not accept another transaction into its mempool at that moment. | Do not create a duplicate blindly; check whether the original hash exists, then retry with appropriate backoff if it was not accepted. |
success: false with vm_status |
Committed execution | The transaction is final but its state change was discarded. | Correct the cause and submit a new transaction with a new valid sequence or nonce. |
Keep the complete error code and message, not just a wallet’s shortened label. Submission or API rejection is different from a committed VM failure: the former may mean no on-chain execution occurred, while the latter is a final ledger entry with an unsuccessful result.
Should you resubmit a pending Aptos transaction?
Use a decision process rather than a timer.
- Find the original hash. Query it on the correct network and endpoint.
- Check commitment. If it is committed successfully, do not resubmit the same action. If it is committed with failure, diagnose
vm_statusand create a corrected transaction. - Check account ordering. For a sequenced transaction, identify earlier pending or missing sequences. A later duplicate will not solve that dependency.
- Check validity. Compare expiration, sequence or nonce, and the current account state.
- Check fee capacity. Confirm balance,
max_gas_amount, and a simulation of the exact payload. - Only then replace or retry. Use a fresh, valid sequence or nonce according to the transaction mode, and retain the original hash for auditability.
For a pending transaction that is still valid and properly sequenced, waiting and polling may be safer than creating a duplicate. For an expired or definitively rejected transaction, a new signed transaction may be appropriate. If the lookup is inconclusive, resolve the network, endpoint, submission, and account-sequence questions first.
Common situations and the least-risk response
“The wallet returned a hash, but the transfer is not visible.”
Query the hash directly. A returned hash is a submission acknowledgment, not a commitment receipt. If pending, continue status checks and inspect sequencing and expiration. If committed successfully, verify the recipient and resulting state from the chain response rather than relying on the wallet display.
“A second transaction from the same account is also stuck.”
Inspect sequence numbers in ascending order. The first uncommitted sequence is usually the transaction that must be understood before later transactions can advance. Raising the later transaction’s gas price does not bypass the earlier one.
“The transaction says failed, but the balance did not move.”
That is consistent with a committed failure. Read vm_status; the intended state change was discarded. Correct the reported execution or fee issue before creating a new transaction.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The API cannot find my hash.”
Verify the full hash, network, and endpoint. Check the original submission response and the sender’s current sequence number. Consider rejection, expiration, or a submission that never reached the node. Do not treat absence from one lookup as proof that resubmission is safe.
Best Value
“I increased the gas price and nothing changed.”
Gas price influences selection priority only. Confirm that the transaction is not blocked by an earlier sequence, a sequence gap, an expired validity window, an insufficient gas ceiling, or insufficient account funds. If the transaction already committed with failure, a higher price cannot change that result.
A practical incident checklist
- Copy the exact transaction hash and identify the Aptos network.
- Query
GET /transactions/by_hash/{hash}or use the documented wait-by-hash operation. - Record commitment state,
success,vm_status, sender, sequence or nonce, expiration, gas limit, and gas price. - For a sequenced transaction, inspect the account’s next sequence and all earlier submitted hashes.
- For an orderless transaction, check nonce-based status and the no-more-than-60-second expiration rule.
- Confirm the transaction has not expired.
- Check the sender’s balance after reserving fee funds.
- Simulate the exact payload and review the gas estimate and execution result.
- Capture any API code such as
sequence_number_too_old,vm_error,rejected_by_filter,health_check_failed, ormempool_is_full. - Wait, correct, or resubmit only after the status and ordering evidence support that action.
What this workflow can and cannot tell you
The transaction hash, Aptos API response, account state, transaction fields, and simulation are sufficient to distinguish most submission, sequencing, expiration, fee, and execution problems. They do not establish a universal processing-time guarantee, and they cannot turn an already committed failure into a success.
Wallet screens and third-party explorers can present different labels or refresh at different times. When their display conflicts with the chain response, preserve the hash and inspect the Aptos transaction record directly. For provider outages or endpoint-specific behavior, use that provider’s official status and support guidance; do not infer a protocol failure from one unavailable API node.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOfficial Aptos guidance in plain language
Aptos documentation summarizes the key checks in three concise rules:
- “Every sequenced transaction must carry the sender’s next sequence number.”
- “If
successisfalse, checkvm_statusfor the error.” - “A committed failed transaction is still final (it will not reverse), but the transfer did not happen.”
Together, these rules explain why the safest troubleshooting order is status first, account ordering second, and payload, expiration, gas, and funds before any retry.
