A crash or slowdown that appears after a PS5 game update does not, by itself, prove that the update is defective. First determine whether the symptom is limited to one game or affects the console more broadly, then work from reversible game-level checks toward Safe Mode and support escalation. Record the exact error and reproduction steps, restart the PS5, install any pending game and system-software updates, and reinstall the affected game before considering destructive console actions.
The sequence below follows PlayStation’s current support guidance while separating a game-patch problem from a PS5 system-software or storage problem. It applies whether the game fails at launch, crashes during play, stutters, or causes a broader performance drop.

Start by classifying the failure
Timing is evidence, not proof of causation. A problem that began after a patch may come from the game update, a separate PS5 system-software change, damaged application data, storage or database issues, or an unrelated hardware or network condition. Before changing anything, establish the scope.
Check whether one game or several are affected
- One game only: Treat the title’s installation or update as the leading practical suspect. Other games working normally points toward game-level troubleshooting first, not a console reset.
- Several games or system features: A wider pattern makes console software, storage, or system performance more relevant. Safe Mode cache clearing is specifically associated by Sony with system-feature issues or performance drops.
- Every game fails at launch: Stop repeatedly launching titles and move toward system-software checks and official support after capturing the evidence.
Check when the failure occurs
| Symptom pattern | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Crash before the title reaches its menu | Whether the crash happens immediately, after a logo, or after selecting a profile | Separates launch failure from an in-game reproducible fault |
| Crash during play | Mission, map, mode, save slot, and approximate time before the crash | Gives support a repeatable trigger instead of a general report |
| Stutter or slowdown without a crash | Whether it affects menus, one area, online play, or the entire console | Helps distinguish a title-specific performance drop from a system-wide one |
| Error message or code | Transcribe the complete code, including hyphens | PlayStation maintains separate guidance for different codes; an example code is not a universal diagnosis |
Also note the game version if the title displays it, the date and time the problem began, whether the PS5 installed a system-software update around the same time, and the exact actions that reproduce the issue. PlayStation asks users seeking help to provide the error code, a detailed description, reproduction steps, and a screenshot or video when possible. See PlayStation’s game-launch troubleshooting guidance.

Use the least disruptive checks first
1. Fully restart the PS5
Close the affected game and restart the console normally. A restart clears a temporary session state without removing installed games, saves, or settings. Do not treat a restart as a repair for a confirmed defective patch; it is a quick way to rule out a transient state before more involved steps.
2. Check for a newer game update
- Highlight the affected game on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update.
- Allow any available update to finish, then restart the game.
This checks the application version separately from the PS5 operating system. PlayStation’s update instructions are at How to check for updates on PS5 and PS4 consoles. If the game reports that it is current, do not assume the PS5 itself is current.
3. Check PS5 system software separately
Open the PS5 system-software update controls and install an available update, following the current instructions in PlayStation’s PS5 system-software support page. A game patch and a PS5 system-software update are different components. Record which one was installed and when; that distinction helps support identify whether the failure follows the title or the console platform.

When only one game is failing, reinstall that game
If other titles and the PS5 interface behave normally, reinstalling the affected game is the next substantial but still reversible step. PlayStation recommends deleting and reinstalling a game for update problems and launch failures. Reinstallation replaces the local application files; it does not establish that the developer’s patch is the cause, and it cannot guarantee a fix for a bug that exists in the published game code.
Before deleting
- Confirm that you know how the game will be downloaded again and that your internet connection and available storage are sufficient.
- Check whether the title has a separate downloadable-content or add-on installation that may also need to be restored.
- Do not delete saved data merely because you are reinstalling the application. The game and its saved data are separate choices in the PS5 storage interface; read each confirmation screen carefully.
- Capture the error code and a screenshot or video first, so the original symptom is documented if the reinstall does not help.
Reinstalling safely
- Highlight the game, press Options, and choose the delete or remove command shown by the current PS5 interface.
- Confirm only the application content you intend to remove.
- Download the game again from your library or insert the original disc, then let the installation and all updates complete.
- Restart the PS5 and test the same reproducible scenario you recorded earlier.
A fresh download can take considerable time and may consume substantial bandwidth. If the same crash returns at the same point after a complete reinstall while other games remain healthy, preserve the evidence and escalate rather than repeatedly deleting and downloading the title.
For system-wide slowdowns, use Safe Mode deliberately
Safe Mode exposes maintenance options that are not available in the normal home screen. Sony’s support page states: “Select Clear System Software Cache if you’re experiencing system feature issues or performance drops.” That wording concerns system features and performance drops; it is not a promise that clearing a cache will repair a defective game update.

Enter Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 off completely; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button. Release it after you hear the second beep, which occurs several seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
The required wired connection means a data-capable USB cable is needed for this procedure. The cable is only a way to operate the Safe Mode menu; it is not a crash fix or a normally required purchase. Follow the current steps and menu labels on PlayStation 5 Support: Safe Mode options and additional troubleshooting, because Sony can change interface wording.
Clear System Software Cache
Choose Clear System Software Cache when the symptom is a broader system-feature issue or performance drop. This is the least invasive of the two maintenance options discussed here. The purpose is to remove temporary system cache data so the console can recreate it; it does not roll back a game patch, downgrade the PS5, or prove that a specific update was faulty.
Rebuild Database
Rebuild Database is a separate Safe Mode option. Sony describes it as scanning the drive and creating a new database of system content. It is therefore different from cache clearing and should be selected for the database or storage-maintenance situation described by the official menu and support instructions, not as a routine response to every game crash. Let the process finish without disconnecting power.

| Safe Mode option | Stated purpose | Use it when | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear System Software Cache | Addresses system-feature issues or performance drops | The PS5 itself feels slow or system features behave abnormally | A guaranteed repair for a game’s defective code |
| Rebuild Database | Scans the drive and creates a new database of system content | Database or storage organization is suspected after normal checks | The same operation as clearing cache |
| System reset or system-software reinstallation | Restores or reinstalls the console software | Only after official diagnostics and a backup, when directed by support | An early troubleshooting step; it can erase user data |
Understand CE-108262-9 and other codes
CE-108262-9 means an error occurred while reading system software or application data. PlayStation’s guidance for this code recommends updating system software, reinstalling the game or application if the error appears after starting it, and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. Read the complete instructions at PS5 Error Code CE-108262-9.
That code is an example, not a universal explanation for every post-update crash. The official PS5 error-code hub lists distinct application, update, and storage errors. Capture the exact code shown on your console and open the page for that code. Substituting a familiar code for the one actually displayed can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.
Decide whether the next step is game-level or console-level
| Observation | Next action | Risk level |
|---|---|---|
| Only one title crashes; the PS5 menus and other games are normal | Restart, check that title’s update, then reinstall the title | Low; reinstall takes time and requires a fresh download |
| Several games stutter or system features are slow | Install current PS5 system software, then consider Safe Mode cache clearing | Low to moderate; use the official Safe Mode procedure |
| A recognized error code repeats | Follow that code’s dedicated PlayStation page and preserve screenshots | Depends on the code; do not generalize from another code |
| Failure persists after game reinstall and supported Safe Mode checks | Run PlayStation’s Repairs diagnostic and contact support with your evidence | Avoid resets until data is backed up and support indicates they are appropriate |
This table is a diagnostic framework, not a published ranking of causes. A single title can expose a system problem, and a system-wide symptom can begin immediately after a game update by coincidence. The number of affected games, the failure stage, and the exact code are more useful than the timing alone.

Protect data before destructive actions
Do not jump to Reset PS5 or reinstall the PS5 system software to solve a single-game crash. Sony warns that resetting or reinstalling system software can delete user data. Back up important saves and other data using the backup options available for your account and console before taking such an action. Confirm what a selected reset removes on the on-screen warning; do not proceed if you cannot accept the loss.
Use only the official update and installation methods. Sony cautions against unofficial update files or installation procedures. If normal updates, a game reinstall, and the appropriate Safe Mode maintenance do not resolve the problem, an unsupported system image can make diagnosis harder and introduce additional risk.
When and how to escalate
Use the official Repairs diagnostic
Persistent failures after the supported software checks warrant PlayStation’s Repairs diagnostic rather than an endless cycle of reinstalls. Start at PlayStation 5 Support and follow the current Repairs path for the symptom and region. Availability and menu labels can vary by country, so use the PlayStation site serving your location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare a complete support report
- PS5 model and region, if requested by support.
- The affected game’s name and visible version number.
- Whether the PS5 system software was updated separately.
- The exact error code or message, including punctuation and hyphens.
- Whether one game or multiple games are affected.
- Whether the failure occurs at launch, in a particular mode, or after a repeatable action.
- Steps already tried: restart, game update check, system update, reinstall, cache clearing, or database rebuild.
- A screenshot or video showing the failure, when possible.
PlayStation’s launch-issue guidance specifically asks for error codes, a detailed description, reproduction steps, and supporting media when available. A concise timeline—“game updated, first crash at launch, restart unchanged, reinstall unchanged”—is more actionable than saying only that the console is broken.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Assuming the patch is guilty: A before-and-after timeline does not identify the failing component. Check the system software and other games.
- Mixing game and system updates: Record each update separately; they follow different support paths.
- Deleting saved data with the game: Reinstall the application without removing saves unless support specifically directs otherwise.
- Repeating a failed reinstall: If the same reproducible crash returns, preserve evidence and escalate.
- Choosing Safe Mode options at random: Cache clearing and database rebuilding have different stated purposes.
- Resetting before backing up: System reset and system-software reinstallation can erase data.
- Using unofficial installation files: Stay with Sony’s documented update methods.
- Reporting without the code: Photograph or transcribe the complete message before dismissing it.
A practical decision path
- Document: Record the game version, PS5 system-software status, exact symptom, code, and reproduction steps.
- Restart: Reboot the PS5 normally and test the same scenario.
- Update: Check the game through its Options menu and separately check PS5 system software.
- Isolate: Test another game and a PS5 system feature to determine whether the problem is title-specific or broader.
- Reinstall one affected title: Delete and download the application again, taking care not to remove saved data accidentally.
- Maintain the system: If several titles or system features are affected, enter Safe Mode and use the option whose stated purpose matches the symptom: cache clearing for system-feature issues or performance drops, or database rebuilding for the database-maintenance case.
- Escalate: If the issue remains, use Repairs and provide the complete evidence package.
- Reset only as a last resort: Back up first and use a reset or system-software reinstallation only when the official instructions or support process make it appropriate.
What a successful fix should look like
After each step, retest the same action that originally failed rather than relying on a different menu or a short idle period. A useful result is specific: the game now reaches its menu, the repeatable crash no longer occurs, or the system-wide stutter is gone across more than one title. If only one test succeeds while the original scenario still fails, treat the problem as unresolved and retain the evidence for support.
The safest conclusion is therefore conditional. A one-game launch failure usually merits game-level checks and a reinstall before console maintenance. A broader performance drop makes the supported Safe Mode cache option relevant, while database rebuilding is a distinct maintenance operation. Any reset or system-software reinstallation belongs at the end of the process because of its data-loss risk.
