How to troubleshoot crashes, glitches, and poor performance in PS5-on-PC projects

Fixing a PlayStation-associated game or project that runs badly on a PC starts with identification, not a random graphics tweak. Record the exact title and build, launcher, Windows version, hardware, driver versions, display setup, and the action that triggers the problem. Then compare that PC with the game’s own requirements, apply reversible software checks, preserve crash evidence, and only afterward investigate engine-specific causes such as Unreal Engine GPU-memory exhaustion or a Windows timeout detection and recovery (TDR) event.

“PS5-on-PC” is not a technical category: it can mean a PlayStation game port, a development project targeting PlayStation and PC, or an Unreal Engine editor project. Requirements, log locations, and support procedures therefore vary by title and by whether you are a player or a developer.

Define the failure before changing anything

The same report—“it crashes” or “it stutters”—can describe several different faults. Classify the symptom and write down what happens before attempting a fix. This creates a baseline and prevents a successful change from being confused with a coincidence.

Crash to desktop

Note whether the game closes immediately, shows an error first, or returns to the desktop after a particular menu, level, cutscene, loading screen, or graphics setting. Record the exact error text. A message mentioning the GPU does not, by itself, prove that the graphics card is defective; it may reflect memory pressure, a driver reset, an application bug, or a content problem.

Freeze or forced restart

Describe whether audio continues, the image stops responding, input stops working, or Windows itself becomes unresponsive. Record how long you waited and whether the process could be ended from Task Manager. A complete system lock-up is different from a game process that merely stopped responding.

Glitch or visual artifact

Capture a screenshot or short recording if possible. Identify whether the problem is missing textures, flickering geometry, corrupted colors, severe shadows, objects appearing in the wrong place, or a user-interface error. State whether it occurs in one location or everywhere, and whether changing the camera angle or loading a different save changes it.

Low frame rate or stutter

Separate consistently low frame rate from intermittent hitching. Note whether the problem appears during traversal, shader compilation, loading, combat, or when many effects are on screen. Record the display resolution, refresh rate, frame-rate cap, and any upscaling or ray-tracing settings you changed.

Network or server symptom

If only online features fail, record the mode, error code, connection type, and time of failure. A server outage or connectivity problem requires a different path from a local rendering failure.

Keep a short incident record

For every reproduction, write down the date and time, game build, storefront or launcher, Windows version, GPU and driver version, CPU, installed RAM, display arrangement, and the exact steps that led to the symptom. Include recent changes such as a game patch, Windows update, driver installation, new monitor, overclock, mod, or graphics-setting change. Repeatability matters: “always happens when opening the map” is more useful than “sometimes crashes.”

Check the exact game requirements and establish a baseline

Use the official requirements for the specific PC title. PlayStation publishes different minimum hardware and operating-system requirements for individual PC games, and may list a performance target for a particular resolution or frame rate. One title’s requirement is not a universal standard for another.

Compare the relevant specifications

Read the requirement page for the exact edition and compare it with your computer’s:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Operating-system version and required updates.
  • CPU model and required instruction-set or core expectations, when listed.
  • GPU model and driver support.
  • Dedicated video memory (VRAM), if the publisher specifies it.
  • System RAM.
  • Available storage and the specified drive type, if stated.
  • Target resolution, quality preset, and frame rate associated with the published requirement.

Quantic Dream’s PC support guidance likewise tells players to compare their computer specifications with the game’s requirements. Treat that advice as a first diagnostic gate, not as proof that a machine below a minimum specification can never run the game or that a machine above a recommended specification cannot have a software fault.

Create a reproducible baseline

Return the game to a known configuration before testing. Record the current resolution, preset, frame-rate limit, synchronization mode, upscaling mode, texture quality, and ray-tracing options. Avoid changing several settings at once. A baseline lets you tell whether a later change improved the exact trigger or merely moved the symptom.

Apply reversible software checks in a safe order

Perform the following checks one at a time, restarting the game and retesting after each meaningful change. These are diagnostic actions, not guarantees that the named component caused the fault.

  1. Install pending Windows updates. Apply updates offered for your installed Windows version, restart the computer, and reproduce the issue. If the problem began immediately after an update, retain that date in your incident record rather than assuming the update is responsible.
  2. Install current device drivers. Check the hardware maker’s current driver for the GPU and other devices involved in the failure. Record the driver version before and after installation. Do not describe a driver update as a fix until the original trigger has been tested again.
  3. Verify the game’s files. Use the file-verification or repair command in the launcher or storefront that installed the title. Let the process finish, apply any replacement files, restart the launcher if it requests one, and repeat the same reproduction steps.
  4. Close unnecessary background programs. Exit overlays, recording tools, browsers with heavy workloads, virtual machines, and other applications that consume CPU, RAM, storage bandwidth, or GPU memory. Keep a note of what you closed so you can identify a conflict rather than permanently disabling software without evidence.
  5. Restart the game and computer. A complete restart clears a stuck process and establishes a clean baseline. It is useful after updates, file repair, or a driver installation, but it does not diagnose the underlying cause by itself.
  6. Check connectivity and service status. For online features, verify that your connection is working and look for an outage or maintenance notice from the game service. An offline rendering problem will not be repaired by network troubleshooting.
  7. Test the display configuration. PlayStation’s general PC guidance suggests temporarily disabling SLI, where applicable, or unplugging extra displays and then restarting the game. Use this only as a controlled test. If the symptom disappears, restore one component at a time to identify whether the multi-GPU or multi-display arrangement is involved.

Keep the original settings and logs until the test is complete. Reversibility is valuable: you should be able to return to the prior configuration when a change has no effect or makes the problem worse.

Preserve crash reports and logs before broad experimentation

Collect evidence before changing drivers, deleting configuration files, reinstalling the game, or editing the registry. A report made after many uncontrolled changes is harder for a support team or developer to interpret.

What a useful report can contain

Unreal Engine crash reports may include the error type, call stacks, system and application context, and log output. Preserve the complete report rather than copying only a single line. Include the timestamp and the exact reproduction steps that produced it.

Unreal Editor crash location

For an Unreal Engine editor project, crash reports are stored in the project’s Saved/Crashes directory. Copy the relevant folder before reopening the editor or deleting temporary files. Packaged games and projects built with other engines may store reports elsewhere, so follow that title’s support instructions instead of assuming the Unreal path applies.

Evidence checklist

  • Exact title, edition, build number, and launcher.
  • Windows version and update state.
  • CPU, GPU, VRAM where available, system RAM, storage location, and display arrangement.
  • GPU and other relevant driver versions.
  • Full error message, crash dump or report, and related log files.
  • Date and time of each failure.
  • Precise reproduction steps and the last successful step.
  • Recent patches, driver changes, new hardware, mods, or configuration changes.
  • Whether file verification, a restart, a clean background-process test, or a display-configuration test changed the result.

Do not attach unrelated personal files. If a support form requests diagnostic archives, use its stated procedure and redact information it does not need.

Investigate Unreal Engine GPU failures conditionally

The following section applies only when the project uses Unreal Engine and the evidence points toward a GPU or rendering failure. It is not a general remedy for every PC game crash.

Watch GPU memory while reproducing the fault

Open Windows Task Manager and observe GPU memory use while performing the exact action that triggers the crash or visual failure. Compare the usage with the available memory shown by Windows. A value approaching the available amount supports a memory-pressure hypothesis; it does not prove that memory pressure is the only cause.

Reduce memory demand in controlled steps

Epic’s Unreal Engine guidance recommends lowering demand when use approaches available GPU memory. Test one of these changes at a time:

  • Close other applications that consume GPU memory.
  • Simplify the scene or temporarily remove expensive effects.
  • Use lower-resolution textures or meshes for the test.
  • Lower the display resolution.

Record the memory reading and whether the same trigger succeeds after each change. If lowering texture resolution avoids the crash but changing display resolution does not, that distinction is useful to the developer. Restore settings gradually after identifying the smallest change that affects the symptom.

Understand TDR without treating it as a universal fix

Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation explains that Windows can reset a graphics driver when a GPU operation takes too long. It describes the default timeout for this behavior as two seconds. The documentation discusses changing timeout-detection-and-recovery registry values so Windows allows an operation more time, but warns that registry changes can have unexpected consequences and will not solve every crash.

Registry changes are therefore an advanced developer or support-directed path, not a first-line player fix. Back up the relevant configuration, follow current official engine documentation exactly, and involve whoever maintains the project before changing a system-wide timeout. A longer timeout can mask an overloaded or defective rendering path while making the desktop appear hung for longer; it does not repair invalid assets, an engine bug, an unstable overclock, or insufficient hardware.

Use symptom-specific branches after the baseline tests

If the game still crashes to desktop

Compare the crash timestamp with the saved report and logs. Test the smallest reproducible action using the baseline settings. If the crash occurs only in one level, save, or menu, report that location and step rather than describing it as a random crash. If file verification, updates, background-process closure, and a clean restart made no difference, stop changing unrelated settings and escalate with the evidence package.

If the game freezes

Wait long enough to distinguish a temporary loading operation from a permanent hang, then note whether Windows remains responsive. Reproduce with background GPU-heavy applications closed and with the simplest display arrangement available. A freeze that appears only when a particular scene loads is valuable information for the project team; do not conceal that pattern by repeatedly force-shutting down the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the image shows artifacts or missing assets

Capture the affected frame and identify whether the artifact survives a restart, appears in a new save, or is limited to one graphics preset. Verify files and update the device driver before changing multiple quality options. In an Unreal project, compare the result after lowering texture or mesh resolution and provide the before-and-after evidence to the developer.

If frame rate is low

First compare your hardware with the title’s stated target, including the target resolution and quality preset. Then close competing applications, confirm that the game is using the intended GPU, and test a lower resolution or preset as a controlled comparison. A lower setting that improves frame rate identifies workload pressure; it does not establish whether the original setting was incorrectly optimized.

If frame time spikes or traversal stutters

Record where the hitch occurs and whether it repeats at the same location. Note background storage activity, shader or asset loading messages, and any overlays or recording software active during the test. Keep the frame-rate limit and synchronization settings fixed while comparing one change at a time so that the result remains interpretable.

If only online play fails

Check the connection and service status, then provide the mode, server or matchmaking message, time, and platform details to the game’s support channel. Do not treat an online outage as evidence of a GPU or Unreal Engine problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate player support from developer and editor support

Players should use the support page for the exact game and edition. PlayStation distinguishes game-issue support from purchase support: technical problems belong with the game or platform support path, while purchase and transaction concerns go to the PC retailer or storefront. Requirements and features vary by title, so include the exact game name in every support request.

Developers and technical artists should also provide the engine version, project branch or build, editor-versus-packaged status, asset or scene involved, GPU-memory observation, call stack, and the smallest reproduction project that can be shared safely. An editor report in Saved/Crashes is more actionable when paired with the change that preceded the crash and the step that reproduces it.

Escalate with a report that can be acted on

When the issue survives the reversible checks, send one organized report rather than a series of short messages. Include:

  1. The exact game or project title, edition, build, and launcher.
  2. Your Windows version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage location, monitor arrangement, and driver versions.
  3. The symptom category: crash, freeze, artifact, low frame rate, stutter, or network failure.
  4. A numbered reproduction sequence, including the location or menu where it occurs.
  5. The full error text, crash report, relevant logs, and timestamps.
  6. Every controlled test performed and its result, including file verification, updates, background-process closure, lower resolution, and display-configuration tests.
  7. Whether the problem began after a patch, driver change, hardware change, or project edit.

Some games provide an in-game crash-reporting option. Use it when available, then retain the confirmation or report identifier. If the problem concerns a purchase rather than game operation, contact the relevant PC store instead of sending payment details to game-technical support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the phrase “GPU crash” identifies the cause. Treat it as a clue and compare memory use, driver state, reproduction steps, and logs.
  • Applying one game’s requirements to another. Requirements and performance targets are title-specific.
  • Changing many variables at once. You lose the ability to tell which change affected the symptom.
  • Deleting evidence first. Preserve crash reports, logs, timestamps, and the original configuration before cleanup.
  • Starting with a registry edit. TDR changes are advanced, can have unexpected consequences, and cannot solve every crash.
  • Buying hardware without a diagnosis. A GPU, RAM upgrade, SSD, or controller may be relevant to a particular configuration, but a generic symptom does not establish that new hardware is needed.
  • Calling a temporary improvement a fix. Reproduce the original trigger several times after a change and document the conditions under which it succeeds.

A compact decision path

  1. Classify the symptom and record the exact trigger.
  2. Confirm the title, build, launcher, Windows version, hardware, drivers, and display setup.
  3. Compare the machine with the official requirements for that title and target.
  4. Apply updates, verify files, close unnecessary programs, restart, and check connectivity where relevant.
  5. Test SLI or extra-display removal only as a controlled diagnostic step.
  6. Save the error, crash report, logs, timestamps, and reproduction steps.
  7. If the project is Unreal Engine-based, inspect GPU memory and test one memory-reduction change at a time.
  8. Leave TDR or registry changes for advanced, support-directed investigation.
  9. Escalate the complete evidence package to the game or project support team, using the retailer only for purchase problems.
