Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart by proving where the failure occurs, then change one reversible setting at a time. Record the game, Steam App ID, Linux distribution and version, GPU and driver, Steam package source, Proton version, and the exact symptom. A Proton log usually gives the next useful clue: add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game’s Steam launch options, launch once, and inspect ~/steam-<APPID>.log.
Use the log to decide whether you are dealing with a game-specific startup dependency, a graphics-adapter selection problem, a damaged or inaccessible per-game prefix, or the Steam packaging layer. Do not copy hardware-specific environment variables blindly, delete a prefix before protecting saves, or treat every fixme: line as a diagnosis.

First, classify the failure
Proton is Valve’s Steam-client compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux. Steam normally supplies the Proton builds most users should use. Troubleshooting is fastest when you identify the failure stage before changing Proton versions, launch options, or files.

Record whether the same title worked previously and whether another Proton game launches. A second working game is a useful comparison, not proof of a cause.
Use the one-game versus many-games branch
| Observation | Prioritize | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Only one game fails | That title’s reports, launch dependencies, graphics path, and its own compatdata prefix | That Proton or your whole driver stack is broken |
| Several games fail after the same change | Shared Steam files, runtime, driver, Proton update, or package source | That every game has the same prefix problem |
| Failure begins before a useful Proton log is created | Steam logs and the package layer as well as Proton | That a missing game log identifies the game’s fault |
Preserve the current setup. Keep a note of each test and its result so you can undo it and compare a known-working state with the failing one.
Generate a Proton log
Add the launch option for one game
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click the affected game, choose Properties, and stay on the General page.
- Find Launch Options and enter
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Close the properties window and launch the game once, reproducing the failure.
- Exit Steam or the game after the attempt, then inspect the log in your home directory:
~/steam-<APPID>.log.
<APPID> is the game’s numeric Steam App ID. Proton writes steam-$APPID.log to the home directory by default. If you need the file elsewhere, set PROTON_LOG_DIR to the destination directory in the launch option, for example by placing it before the command and retaining %command%.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep diagnostics temporary
Launch options are applied per run. Removing PROTON_LOG=1 %command% restores the previous launch behavior and does not permanently modify the Wine prefix. Remove verbose diagnostics after collecting the evidence; a permanently enabled log can grow large and make later failures harder to read.
For a graphics-selection investigation, the Proton 11.0 PRIME guidance gives an example that combines PROTON_LOG=1 WINEDEBUG=+d3d VKD3D_DEBUG=trace. This is intentionally noisy. Use it only for a focused test, save the resulting log, and remove it before normal play.

Read the log as evidence, not a verdict
Search for the useful markers
Open the log in a text editor or use a search function for err:, warn:, error:, and fixme:. Read several lines before and after a match and note the first failure that appears at the time the game exits. A repeated warning from an initialization stage is generally more useful than a harmless message emitted after the process is already shutting down.
These prefixes are triage markers. They are not automatic diagnoses. Many fixme: messages describe unimplemented or incomplete behavior that a game never reaches in a meaningful way, while a single missing file or permission error can be decisive.

Startup failures and protection components
The Proton troubleshooting checklist associates some startup signatures with Steam2.dll loading and CEG DRM. Treat those entries as clues to investigate in the affected game’s reports and current compatibility notes, not as a universal instruction to download replacement DLLs or bypass protection. The checklist was edited on September 29, 2020, so its signatures are historical guidance and may not cover a current Proton build or game update.
Missing video or cutscenes
If the game opens but a movie, intro, or cutscene is missing, search for media-related failures involving Media Foundation components such as mfplat.dll, mfplay.dll, mfreadwrite.dll, or mfstartup.dll. Quartz, WMVcore, and XNA references can be relevant as well. Confirm that the symptom is specifically a media failure before changing anything; these names can also occur in logs that are unrelated to the visible problem.
Audio clues
For a game that launches without sound or crashes when audio starts, note references to XAudio2 DLL names and compare them with reports for that title. Capture the complete surrounding log section rather than copying one line, because the same DLL name can be mentioned during normal probing.

Investigate graphics only when the evidence points there
Confirm the selected adapter on multi-GPU and PRIME systems
A black window, an immediate crash in a Direct3D title, or unexpectedly low performance can result from Proton using a different GPU than you intended. First check the log for the adapter or graphics device selected by Proton. The Proton 11.0 PRIME guide documents ways to select a named device with DXVK_FILTER_DEVICE_NAME in applicable Vulkan-backed Direct3D paths, and it documents DRI_PRIME=1 or NVIDIA offload variables for particular configurations.
Recommended Free Tools
Device names, driver behavior, and valid variables depend on the actual GPU pair and driver. Copy the option that matches your hardware and the guide for that configuration; do not paste a setting from an unrelated laptop, desktop, or driver stack. Verify the selected adapter in the next log and compare the result with the original run.
Test PRIME vsync freezes carefully
Valve’s PRIME guidance notes that in-game vsync is known to cause poor performance or freezes in PRIME configurations. If your evidence shows a PRIME setup and the symptom is a freeze or severe slowdown rather than a universal black screen, disable the game’s own vsync as a temporary test. This is not a general fix for every crash or black screen. If it changes nothing, restore the original setting before trying another test.
Remove graphics overrides after each comparison
Keep one graphics override per test and write down the result. Leaving a device filter, offload variable, or extra debug setting in place can hide whether a later change helped. Once you know which configuration launches, remove unnecessary overrides and retest with the smallest working set.
Check the game’s prefix and library storage
Handle a “prefix not owned by you” message
If Steam explicitly reports that a prefix is not owned by you, the Proton FAQ identifies a likely cause: the Steam library is on an NTFS partition whose files are not owned by the user running Steam. Inspect the ownership and mount configuration of that specific library. Do not conclude that every NTFS library is unusable; the relevant question is whether the account launching Steam can read and write the affected library and its compatdata directory.

Understand per-game compatdata
Each game has its own Proton prefix under that Steam library’s steamapps/compatdata/<APPID> directory. A stale launcher setting, one-time graphics experiment, or game-specific configuration can therefore affect one title while others continue to work.
Before modifying or removing a prefix:
- Back up local saves and configuration files that are not guaranteed to be synchronized.
- Check the game’s Steam Cloud status and allow pending synchronization to finish.
- Record the current prefix location and any launch options so you can restore the test.
- Prefer changing the game’s settings or a single configuration file when the log points to that item.
Recreating compatdata is a last-resort state reset, not a routine crash fix. A prefix can contain game state, settings, and locally stored saves. The FAQ contains old example paths, so locate the active Steam library in your installation rather than relying on a hard-coded path copied from an older article.
Separate Proton from the Steam packaging layer
Identify how Steam was installed
Record whether Steam came from your distribution, Flatpak, or another package source. The package can affect filesystem access, runtime libraries, sandbox permissions, and the location of logs. When Proton crashes before it creates a useful Proton log, inspect Steam’s own logs and package-specific reports instead of changing game prefixes blindly.
What the February 2, 2026 Flatpak report does—and does not—show
A report dated February 2, 2026 described a Proton Experimental segmentation fault under Steam Flatpak. Valve contributors said the implicated shared-library guard was part of the unofficial Flatpak packaging and directed the issue to its maintainers. That is one packaging incident, not evidence that Flatpak generally causes Proton crashes and not a reason to disable a security or library guard as a blanket remedy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the incident as a diagnostic branch: if several Proton games fail at the same time, the crash happens before game-specific initialization, and the package source recently changed, compare package reports and a known-working package configuration. Make one controlled change, preserve the logs, and revert if the comparison does not isolate the fault.
Best Value
Choose the next test from the evidence
| Evidence you have | Single reversible test | Expected observation |
|---|---|---|
| One game fails; log shows a game-specific startup or media signature | Search current reports for that exact signature and title; change only the documented game setting or dependency path | The same stage succeeds or the log changes to a later, more specific failure |
| Log identifies an unexpected GPU on a PRIME or multi-GPU system | Apply the matching adapter-selection variable from the Proton PRIME guidance for one launch | The next log names the intended adapter and the symptom changes |
| PRIME setup freezes or performs badly while in-game vsync is enabled | Disable in-game vsync for one run | The freeze or performance symptom changes; restore vsync if it does not |
| Steam reports that the prefix is not owned by you | Check ownership and mount options for the affected NTFS Steam library | Steam can create or update the game’s compatdata files |
| Several games fail immediately after a package or shared update | Collect Steam/package logs and compare the package source with a known-working state | The failure follows the shared layer rather than one game |
| No clear evidence yet | Collect a clean Proton log with no extra overrides | You obtain a baseline instead of stacking unrelated variables |
Do not run all of these tests together. If you add a device filter, delete a prefix, switch package sources, and change Proton in one attempt, a successful launch will not tell you which change mattered and a failed launch will be harder to undo.
Work by failure stage
No process or window appears
- Confirm the game’s App ID, Proton version, package source, and exact launch time in your notes.
- Generate a fresh log with
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%. - Check whether the log is created at all. If it is absent, inspect Steam and package logs before modifying the game prefix.
- Search the Proton log for the first startup error, including Steam2.dll or CEG-related clues, and compare that signature with current reports for the title.
A launcher opens, then the game stays black
- Capture the log from the run that produces the black window.
- Determine whether the log names the intended GPU and graphics path.
- If this is a PRIME or multi-GPU system, test the matching adapter-selection setting once and remove it afterward.
- If the log instead points to media initialization, investigate the Media Foundation, Quartz, WMVcore, or XNA clue rather than changing GPU variables.
The game reaches a menu, then crashes
Compare the timing with the log. A crash after a launcher or menu often implicates a title-specific component, media playback, audio initialization, or a per-game configuration rather than Steam’s global installation. Preserve saves and configuration before testing compatdata changes, and search existing reports using the exact error signature.
The game freezes during play
Establish whether the setup uses PRIME and whether in-game vsync is enabled. Valve’s documented PRIME warning makes a one-run vsync-off comparison reasonable in that specific configuration. If the freeze occurs across multiple games or began with a shared update, return to the package, driver, and runtime branch instead of treating it as a single-title prefix problem.
Protect data while resetting state
A prefix reset can remove settings and locally stored game data. Locate the active library and the title’s compatdata/<APPID> directory, copy saves and configuration to a separate location, and verify cloud synchronization before any deletion or recreation. If the issue is only a launcher option or stale setting, edit that setting first. A reset is justified only when the evidence points to that game’s state and you have a recoverable backup.
Escalate with a useful report
Search before opening an issue
Search the Proton issue list for the game name, App ID, Proton version, and the distinctive error signature. Include closed reports: an older report can reveal a known workaround, a regression pattern, or the exact information maintainers need even when it is no longer open.
Include one reproducible problem per report
A strong report contains:
- A short title describing the game and the visible failure.
- Exact reproduction steps, including the Proton version and launch options.
- Distribution and version, kernel or desktop details when relevant, GPU and driver, and Steam package source.
- The relevant Proton log and command-line output, with unrelated personal data removed.
- CrashIDs or minidumps when Steam provides them.
- A comparison with a working configuration, if one exists.
- The result of each reversible test, including options you removed.
Keep one issue per report so a fix for a graphics-selection regression is not buried inside an unrelated media or prefix discussion. Reproduce the failure after your final change and attach evidence from that exact run.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing several variables at once: it destroys the comparison needed to identify a cause.
- Treating every
fixme:line as fatal: the marker is a clue, not proof. - Leaving verbose logging enabled: diagnostic output is useful for a captured run, not for every launch.
- Copying an NVIDIA, AMD, or PRIME variable from another system: GPU names and valid settings vary by driver and hardware.
- Assuming NTFS is always the problem: investigate ownership and mount behavior for the affected library.
- Deleting compatdata without a backup: the prefix can contain saves and configuration.
- Blaming Flatpak from one incident: packaging is a layer to check when the evidence fits, not a universal explanation.
- Reporting without a reproduction: maintainers need exact steps, logs, system information, and the failing configuration.
When you have enough evidence to stop
Stop changing settings when you have a reproducible symptom, a fresh log, a narrowed failure stage, and a test result that distinguishes between game, graphics, prefix, and packaging causes. At that point, either apply the narrowly documented fix for the identified component or report the remaining issue with the complete evidence. A clean baseline and a reversible change are more valuable than a long list of unexplained launch options.
