If a game became unstable after a DLSS mod or DLL replacement, first return it to an unmodified state: disable or remove the mod, restore the original files or run your platform’s file repair, then test the game before changing anything else. That baseline separates a mod conflict from a wider driver, game-update, or hardware problem.
Once the clean game works, reintroduce the mod only after confirming that it supports your exact game build and DLSS feature. Crashes usually point to loading or compatibility problems; artifacts require checking competing rendering overrides; and poor performance requires a controlled before-and-after comparison rather than assuming a newer DLL is faster.

Start with a safe recovery plan
Do not begin by deleting DLLs at random. A DLSS mod may replace a file, add a loader, inject code, or change configuration. Removing the wrong file can create a second problem and make the original cause harder to identify.

- Capture evidence. Record the crash message, the point at which the game fails, screenshots of visual defects, and whether the problem occurs at launch, in a menu, or during gameplay.
- Return to baseline. Use the mod’s documented disable or uninstall procedure. Restore any backed-up DLL, or use the game platform’s verify, repair, or scan option.
- Test the clean game. Launch it with the mod and its added or replaced files absent. Do not reinstall the mod until this test is complete.
A clean-game result is diagnostic evidence, not proof that one particular file is defective. If the game works without the mod, the mod or its interaction with the current game build becomes the leading suspect. If it still fails, investigate the game, driver, configuration, or hardware separately.

Record exactly what changed
DLSS problems are difficult to reproduce when a report says only “it crashes.” Make a compact change log before you repair anything. Include:
- Game title, edition, platform, and exact build number.
- Mod name, release or commit version, and installation instructions you followed.
- Whether the mod swapped a library, injected a feature, added a loader, or altered configuration files.
- GPU model, operating-system version, and graphics-driver version.
- Every file you copied, renamed, replaced, or added, including its original location.
- Graphics API selected by the game, such as DirectX or Vulkan, if the game exposes that choice.
- The symptom: launch crash, crash after loading a save, black screen, flickering, ghosting, shimmering, missing effects, stutter, lower average frame rate, or higher latency.
- What changed immediately before the regression, including a game update, driver update, mod update, or settings change.
This record lets you undo one variable at a time and gives a mod author enough information to reproduce the issue.
Test the game with every mod component removed
Disable the mod through its own installer or documented removal command. If it replaced files, restore the backup created by that tool. If no backup exists, use the platform’s file-verification or repair feature so official files are downloaded again. Then restart the game and perform the same action that previously failed.

Treat that as a general isolation method; the exact folders and launcher controls differ by game. Do not assume that deleting a single visible DLL removes an injector, configuration file, or loader that the mod installed elsewhere.
Interpret the baseline test

Restore swapped DLLs and verify official files
Library swapping tools warn that an incompatible swap can stop a game from launching. Use the tool’s restore-original option whenever it provides one. If the tool has no usable backup, the game platform’s verify or repair operation is safer than hunting for DLLs on download sites.

Verification may replace modified files, so back up logs and your change record first. After repair, launch once with no mod enabled. If the game still fails, note whether the error changed; a different error can show that the original replacement was removed successfully.
Do not delete unidentified DLLs
A file name alone does not prove that a library belongs to the mod. Games often ship multiple vendor and middleware DLLs. Deleting one can break unrelated rendering, audio, input, or anti-cheat components. Remove only files identified by the mod’s instructions or restore the entire installation through the official repair process.

A library swap can update an existing DLSS implementation; it cannot add DLSS to a game that has no DLSS support. The DLSS Swapper project explicitly states that its tool does not add DLSS support to unsupported games. A mod that injects a new feature or loader is a different category and may have additional game, API, and driver requirements.
DLSS Swapper recognizes specific library names, including:
nvngx_dlss.dllfor the core Super Resolution implementation.nvngx_dlssg.dllfor DLSS Frame Generation where the game uses that library.nvngx_dlssd.dllfor DLSS Ray Reconstruction implementations that expose that library.
If the game implements a technology without one of the libraries the tool supports, the tool cannot swap it. A game update can also replace a changed library or leave a swapper’s displayed inventory out of date until it refreshes its list.

Check the executable, library location, and signature
NVIDIA’s programming guidance identifies nvngx_dlss.dll as the DLSS library and places it with the game executable or in the applicable plugin location. That is a guide for supported integrations, not a universal path for every third-party mod. Some mods load a library through an injector or a separate plugin directory.

The same guidance notes that a missing or corrupted NVIDIA signature can prevent NGX Core from loading the library. If a swap produced a launch failure, compare the restored file with the official installation rather than trying several unsigned copies. A development DLL is not interchangeable with a production library simply because the file name matches.
Use a controlled file check
- Identify the game executable that actually launches, especially if the installation contains separate binaries for different graphics APIs.
- Locate the DLSS file the game or mod documentation names. Record its full path and file version.
- Compare that location and version with a clean, platform-repaired installation.
- Restore the official file and test before copying any replacement again.
- If the mod uses an injector, check its documented loader files separately; do not assume they are in the executable’s directory.
Account for game and mod updates
A pending game update can overwrite a swapped DLL. Conversely, a game update can change an interface that the mod expects and create crashes or rendering defects even when the mod itself has not changed. Check the game’s current build and the mod’s compatibility notes before reinstalling.
Do not treat an experimental DLSS model as automatically safer because it is newer. NVIDIA describes experimental models as not fully validated and warns that they may contain regressions. If a mod replaces a production model or library with an experimental component, revert to the game’s original files when stability matters more than testing a new image-quality behavior.
Fix crashes by narrowing the loading failure
Crashes that occur before the menu usually indicate a loading, file, signature, or compatibility issue. Crashes that occur only when enabling a feature may indicate a conflict between that feature and another override.

Launch crash or immediate exit
- Run the clean-game baseline after restoring official files.
- Confirm that the mod supports the exact game build and graphics API.
- Remove duplicate copies of the same DLSS library only when the mod documentation identifies them; otherwise use file repair.
- Disable overlays, injectors, and performance tuners temporarily as one-at-a-time tests.
- Check whether the game’s anti-cheat or launcher rejects modified files, and follow the publisher’s instructions rather than bypassing protections.
Crash after loading a save or entering a level
Reproduce the failure with identical graphics settings in the unmodified game. If only the modded build fails, lower the modded feature set to the game’s documented options and test a new save or a different scene. A save that was created with an unsupported feature may not be a reliable first test of the repaired installation.
Diagnose artifacts without guessing
Artifacts include shimmering edges, ghost trails, disocclusion flashes, flickering particles, broken reflections, black patches, and UI corruption. First establish whether the same scene is clean at baseline settings. Then change one override at a time and capture the same camera movement for comparison.
NVIDIA’s driver guidance documents one specific conflict: native DLSS Frame Generation and Smooth Motion are competing technologies and should not be enabled together. The combination can produce visual artifacts and lower performance. Turn off one of them, restart the game if required, and repeat the same scene test. This check does not explain every artifact; it is a documented interaction to eliminate.
Artifact isolation checklist
- Restore the game’s native DLSS mode and quality preset.
- Disable Smooth Motion if the game or driver exposes it.
- Disable native Frame Generation, then test with Smooth Motion off; reverse the test only after recording the first result.
- Turn off the mod’s optional overrides, sharpening, model selection, or custom configuration individually.
- Test another graphics API or preset only if the game officially supports it.
- Compare a static scene and a moving scene. Ghosting that appears only during motion points to temporal reconstruction or frame-generation behavior rather than a general texture failure.
Keep the setting that produced each result in your change log. Avoid changing resolution, anti-aliasing, sharpening, and several driver options at once, because that removes the comparison point.
Investigate poor performance methodically
A newer DLSS library does not guarantee higher frame rates. Performance can fall when a mod enables an additional injector, conflicts with frame generation, changes workload, or causes shader compilation and stutter. Compare like with like.
Build a repeatable comparison
- Use the same resolution, quality mode, frame cap, graphics API, scene, camera route, and background applications.
- Allow shader compilation or first-run caching to finish before recording a result.
- Measure several repeatable passes instead of relying on a single first impression.
- Record average frame rate, frame-time spikes, latency indicator if available, and whether the GPU or CPU is saturated.
- Compare three states: the clean game, the mod with default settings, and the mod with optional overrides disabled.
If the clean game is faster than the modded game, keep the clean files while you test. If only one optional feature causes the drop, report that feature and the measured conditions rather than describing the entire mod as slow.
Check feature overlap
Frame-generation features can alter both displayed frame rate and latency. Do not compare a native Frame Generation run with a Smooth Motion run and call the difference a DLSS-model improvement. Disable competing features, return to the same base resolution and quality setting, and then test one feature at a time.
When the issue is not the mod
If the unmodified installation still crashes or shows the same artifacts, treat the mod as an eliminated variable rather than continuing to swap DLLs. Run the platform’s file repair, return driver-level overrides to defaults, and test with overlays disabled. If the problem survives those checks, use the game publisher’s support route; the publisher can inspect game logs and build-specific failures that a mod author cannot control.
Hardware instability, overheating, insufficient memory, a failing storage device, or a broader driver regression can also produce symptoms that happen to appear after a mod installation. The timing is relevant, but it does not establish causation. Avoid buying replacement hardware or paid utilities until a clean-game test identifies an actual component problem.
Prepare a useful report for the mod author
If the game is stable after restoration and fails only when the mod is installed, send a concise, reproducible report. Include:
- Game name, edition, platform, and exact build.
- Mod version and installation method.
- GPU and driver version, operating system, and selected graphics API.
- Files added or replaced and their locations.
- Exact crash text, crash point, artifact description, or performance measurements.
- Whether the official files were restored and whether the clean game worked.
- The smallest set of settings that reproduces the issue.
- Logs or screenshots with personal information removed.
State the baseline result first. “Crashes only after installing version X; original files launch normally” is far more actionable than a list of speculative causes. Reporting destinations vary by project; follow the mod’s issue tracker or support instructions.
Prevent the next update from repeating the problem
- Keep an untouched backup or know how to invoke the mod’s restore function before swapping files.
- Record the game build and mod version together so you can tell which combinations were tested.
- After every game or driver update, launch once without the mod.
- Recheck the mod’s compatibility notes before copying a replacement library.
- Change one override at a time and preserve a known-good configuration.
- Keep native Frame Generation and Smooth Motion from being enabled together.
- Do not download unidentified DLLs or remove files whose purpose you cannot establish.

The reliable order is therefore: document the change, restore official files, prove the clean baseline, verify that the game supports the intended implementation, then reintroduce one compatible feature at a time. That sequence prevents a failed DLL swap from being confused with a game update, a driver regression, or a separate system fault.
