Then check the published PC requirements or console mode, make sure the installation is updated, and collect the platform-specific evidence KRAFTON requests. There is no single confirmed fix for every crash, and historical patch notes only explain the specific faults they name.
This guide covers PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. It separates low-risk checks from evidence-gathering steps so you do not delete saves or configuration files without a verified reason.

Identify what kind of failure you have
The timing of the failure is the most useful first clue. Write down what happens before trying changes, because a crash that occurs before the first logo needs a different investigation from one that repeats during a particular cutscene.
- Before the first window or logo: the game may close immediately, show an error, or never create a visible window.
- While loading a save: the title reaches the menu, but a selected save causes a crash or an endless load.
- At a repeatable scene: the game fails at the same level, fight, conversation, door, or cinematic.
- During otherwise varied play: the crash appears at different locations or after an unpredictable amount of time.
Record the platform, storefront or console model, operating system where applicable, the last action before the failure, any error code, your graphics settings, and whether another person can reproduce it. KRAFTON specifically asks for the platform, the actions preceding the crash, settings, and screenshots or video when the problem can be reproduced.

Choose the correct platform path
| Platform | First baseline check | Most useful diagnostic material |
|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam or Epic) | Compare hardware, operating system, DirectX version, and free storage with the official requirements. | DxDiag text, in-game graphics settings, save file, crash description, and reproducible screenshots or video. |
| PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 | Confirm the game is updated and note the console model and graphics mode. | Any crash report shown by Sony, console account or KRAFTON ID, settings, action sequence, and screenshots or video. |
| Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X | Confirm the game is updated and record the exact Xbox model and graphics mode. | Any crash report shown by Microsoft, platform name or KRAFTON ID, settings, action sequence, and screenshots or video. |
Do not apply a PC-only procedure to a console installation, and do not assume a console crash has the same cause as a similarly timed PC crash. The official support request asks for different files by platform.
Check whether a PC meets the published baseline
KRAFTON lists 75 GB of available storage for both minimum and recommended PC configurations. The recommended specification calls for an SSD. An SSD is a storage recommendation, not a documented cure for crashing; it is most relevant when the game is installed on a slow drive or the drive is nearly full.
| Tier | Operating system and CPU | Memory | Graphics | API | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10/11; 64-bit processor and operating system; Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | 8 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580 | DirectX 11 | 75 GB available |
| Recommended | Windows 10/11; 64-bit processor and operating system; Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 | DirectX 12 | 75 GB available; SSD recommended |
| High | Intel Core i7-9700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 6700 XT | Not stated in the older requirements tier | 75 GB available |
| Ultra | Intel Core i9-9900K or AMD Ryzen 9 3900X | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD RX 6800 XT | Not stated in the older requirements tier | 75 GB available |
The high and ultra rows come from an older official requirements article. They are published hardware tiers, not guarantees of a particular frame rate or proof that a machine above a tier cannot crash. If your system is below minimum, bring it up to the baseline before treating a crash as a game defect. If it meets or exceeds the recommendation, continue gathering evidence rather than assuming the hardware is cleared.
Important PC graphics limitations
- The PC version does not support DLSS. Do not look for a DLSS switch as a launch or stability fix.
- PC ray tracing requires a system that supports DirectX 12. If your hardware or operating-system configuration cannot provide DX12, ray tracing is not an appropriate setting to test.
- Changing a graphics option can help isolate a reproducible rendering fault, but the published material does not establish a universal setting that prevents crashes.
Bring the installation up to date, then interpret patch notes carefully
Use the update function in the storefront or console where you installed the game. If an update is pending, let it finish before testing again. You can also use the platform’s normal installation-repair or file-check function if it offers one; record what it reports instead of deleting files manually. The official Steam technical-issue page links to the support site and to the store’s update history, while console update history is shown by the relevant platform.
Two historical KRAFTON patches contain specific crash fixes:
- Version 3.01, released January 17, 2023: general performance optimizations across platforms; a low-frequency PC crash in the Tunnels level during the Two Head fight; and a low-frequency PlayStation 4 crash in Snowcat while Jacob is talking to Dani.
- Version 2.01, released December 15, 2022: performance and stability work, reduced memory use in named areas, a fix for a Reforge 3D-printer memory leak, and improved lighting performance on AMD graphics cards for PC.
Those notes do not establish the cause of a different crash. A crash in another level, on another console, or at another point in the Two Head sequence should not be declared fixed merely because version 3.01 mentions a related problem. Check the live update status on your own platform rather than calling either historical version the current release.
If The Callisto Protocol crashes on startup or will not launch on PC
- Capture the initial symptom. Note whether you see a launcher, logo, black screen, error code, or no window at all. Take a screenshot if an error remains visible.
- Confirm the baseline. Check Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit operation, processor, graphics card, RAM, DirectX capability, and at least 75 GB free. An installation on an SSD aligns with KRAFTON’s recommendation, but it is not a guaranteed remedy.
- Finish pending updates. Update the game through Steam or Epic and allow the platform to complete any queued installation or repair check.
- Use conservative graphics settings for diagnosis. If you can reach the menu, note the existing settings, then test with ray tracing disabled unless your system supports DX12. Do not search for DLSS options; the PC version does not support DLSS.
- Retest once, then stop changing variables. Repeatedly altering several settings makes the failure harder to describe. Record which single change preceded the next launch attempt.
If the game still closes before a usable menu appears, do not delete configuration folders or saves as a first response. Preserve the current state and prepare the DxDiag and account information described below.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If it crashes while loading a save
First determine whether every save fails or only one slot. Record the slot name, the last location you remember, and whether a new game reaches gameplay. This distinction helps support separate a damaged save from a broader launch or rendering failure, but it does not prove the cause.
- Do not overwrite or delete the affected save while diagnosing it.
- Make a backup copy of the save folder before moving anything. On Windows, KRAFTON identifies the folder as
AppDataLocalCallistoProtocolSavedSaveGames. - KRAFTON names
PhxAutoSaveandPhxManualSaveas example files. Include the relevant copy with a support request rather than editing it. - Record whether the crash occurs at the same percentage, screen, or loading message each time.
- If another save loads, describe that result and identify the failing slot; if no save loads, report that broader pattern.
These steps preserve evidence. They are not a promise that copying or replacing a save will repair it.
If the crash repeats at a particular scene
A repeatable location is valuable because support can compare the exact sequence with known fixes. Write down the level, objective, enemy or conversation involved, the direction you entered from, and the action immediately before the crash. Capture video if your platform can do so without changing the failure.
Compare the description with the version 3.01 notes. They mention a low-frequency PC crash in the Tunnels during the Two Head fight and a low-frequency PS4 crash in Snowcat during a conversation between Jacob and Dani. The match must include the platform and the scene; a crash that only sounds similar is not confirmed to share the same cause.

If it crashes randomly during play or performance becomes unstable
Random-looking failures still need a timeline. Track how long the session lasted, whether the crash followed a transition or loading screen, which area you were in, and whether the behavior changes with a particular graphics mode. Include the complete settings list in your notes; KRAFTON asks for in-game graphics settings for both PC and console reports.
PC checks
- Confirm that free storage has not fallen below the 75 GB requirement while updates or captures are being stored.
- Compare your CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, and DirectX support with the minimum and recommended rows rather than judging by average frame rate alone.
- Test one graphics change at a time and keep a record. Ray tracing requires DX12; DLSS is not available in this version.
- Note whether an AMD graphics card is involved. Version 2.01 specifically documented improved lighting performance on AMD cards, but that historical note does not identify the cause of a current crash.
Console checks
Record the console family and the selected graphics mode. KRAFTON lists a 60 FPS Performance mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It does not list that mode for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Xbox Series S. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X also list a 30 FPS Fidelity mode. These are documented rendering options, not crash fixes; use the mode name in your report so support knows exactly what was active.
Separate a platform problem from a game problem
Use controlled comparisons rather than guessing. On PC, note whether the same account can reach the main menu after a restart and whether a new game behaves differently from an existing save. On console, record whether the failure affects one profile or every profile and whether it happens in the same scene after a full relaunch. These observations do not diagnose the fault by themselves, but they give support a reproducible boundary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA launch failure before any menu is different from a save-specific failure, even if both end with the same operating-system or console message. Likewise, a crash that occurs only in Performance mode should be reported with that mode named; do not silently switch to Fidelity and describe the result as an unchanged test. Keep one short log with the date, game version shown by the platform, scene, settings, and outcome after each test.
Avoid risky or misleading fixes
- Do not delete saves first. Preserve the original files and make a backup before moving anything.
- Do not claim a historical patch is a universal cure. Version 3.01 names two narrow, low-frequency crash cases; it does not explain every launch or loading failure.
- Do not invent unsupported graphics options. The PC version does not support DLSS, and ray tracing requires DX12.
- Do not change several variables at once. A clean test requires one documented change, one relaunch, and a recorded result.
- Do not use frame rate as the only health check. A machine can exceed a listed tier and still need a support report when the crash is reproducible.
Community suggestions can be useful leads, but they are not documented KRAFTON remedies. Treat any unverified workaround as a temporary experiment, keep backups, and stop if it destroys evidence needed for support.
What to send KRAFTON when the problem persists
KRAFTON’s June 26, 2023 support instructions ask for a platform-specific package. A complete report is more useful than a one-line statement that the game crashes.
PC submission checklist
- Whether the copy is on Steam or Epic.
- Your username and user ID.
- A text copy of DxDiag.
- The in-game graphics settings.
- A precise description of the actions leading to the bug or crash.
- A screenshot or video when the problem is reproducible.
- A copy of the relevant save file, including the files in the
AppDataLocalCallistoProtocolSavedSaveGamesfolder when applicable.
PlayStation and Xbox submission checklist
- The first-party platform and exact console model.
- Your platform screen name, username, or login name, and/or your KRAFTON ID.
- Any crash report displayed by Sony or Microsoft.
- The in-game graphics settings.
- The exact actions leading to the problem.
- Reproducible screenshots or video.
Use a concise ticket format
Start with a subject such as “PC crash when loading PhxManualSave” or “PS4 Snowcat conversation crash.” In the first paragraph, identify the platform, storefront or console model, and when the failure began. Follow with numbered reproduction steps, the exact error text, graphics mode and settings, update status, and whether other saves or a new game work. Attach the requested diagnostics rather than pasting an incomplete summary. This format lets support compare your report with the narrow cases in the January 17, 2023 version 3.01 notes.
For PC, include DxDiag as text and the relevant save copy. For PlayStation or Xbox, include the first-party crash report when one is displayed. Remove unrelated personal files from attachments, but do not alter the save or diagnostic content that support needs to inspect.
Include the game version shown by your platform, but do not guess that it is current. Explain whether the failure happens at launch, during save loading, at one repeatable scene, or during varied play. The Steam technical-issue information identifies Striking Distance Studios as developer and KRAFTON as publisher, so KRAFTON’s support channel is the appropriate escalation point for this title.

Does The Callisto Protocol support DLSS?
No. KRAFTON states that the PC version does not support DLSS, so searching for a DLSS switch will not solve a launch problem.
Which consoles have 60 FPS Performance mode?
KRAFTON lists 60 FPS Performance mode for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It does not list that mode for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Xbox Series S. PS5 and Xbox Series X also list a 30 FPS Fidelity mode.
Should I delete a broken save?
No. First copy the save folder, including example files such as PhxAutoSave and PhxManualSave, then report whether every slot or only one fails. Deleting the original removes evidence and is not an established repair.
Is the Tunnels Two Head crash fixed?
Version 3.01, released January 17, 2023, lists a low-frequency PC crash in the Tunnels during the Two Head fight. That note applies to the specific platform and scene described; it does not prove that another crash has the same cause.
What information does KRAFTON need from console players?
Provide the PlayStation or Xbox model, platform username or KRAFTON ID, any Sony or Microsoft crash report, in-game graphics settings, exact reproduction steps, and screenshots or video when reproducible.
A compact decision path
- Classify: startup, save load, repeatable scene, or random play.
- Identify: PC storefront or exact PlayStation/Xbox model.
- Check: updates, 75 GB PC storage, published hardware requirements, and applicable graphics mode.
- Test safely: change one accessible setting at a time; do not delete saves or configuration data.
- Document: error text, settings, actions, version, and reproducibility.
- Escalate: send DxDiag and a save on PC, or the platform crash report on console, with the requested account details.
No official source provides a current crash-rate statistic or a universal workaround. Treat a historical patch entry as evidence about the exact fault it names, not as a diagnosis for every copy of The Callisto Protocol.
