Start by identifying the Zune generation, firmware, game, installation method, and exact failure: a launch crash, a crash during play, corrupted official games, or unresponsive controls. The right next step depends on which of those problems you have.
Identify the Zune and the exact symptom
Before changing files or content, write down the Zune model or generation, firmware version, game title and version if known, how you installed it, and when the problem occurs. These details help separate an installation problem from a game crash or an input mismatch.

- Launch crash: The game closes or fails before it becomes playable.
- Crash during play: The game starts but stops working later.
- Controls not working as expected: Inputs are ignored or behave differently from the game’s instructions.
- Official games appear corrupted: Existing games fail after homebrew was added.
Zune HD homebrew and homebrew for earlier Zune generations are covered by separate archive resources. Do not assume a title or its controls are interchangeable across those device families. For a game specifically intended for Zune HD, compare your setup with the game’s own installation instructions. A Zune HD setup guide describes placing selected app or game files in %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftZuneApplications, connecting the device, and opening Zune software to sync the content. Check that the title is in the expected folder and that the sync completes. This is a documented installation workflow, not proof that an installation issue caused a particular crash.

The same guide says most games should be playable, but warns that apps relying on external services may stop working when those services or APIs change. That warning concerns service-dependent apps; it does not establish the cause of an individual game’s crash. Read the Zune homebrew setup guide.
If you are using Project Lyra, keep its scope in mind: its getting-started documentation targets Zune HD running firmware 4.5 and describes a one-time installation, persistent loading after boot, and on-device mod management. Troubleshoot controls by matching the game to the device
First consult the game’s own instructions and confirm that it targets your Zune model. Microsoft XNA Game Studio 3.1 documentation describes touchscreen and accelerometer input on Zune HD, alongside mappings from Zune buttons to standard Xbox 360 gamepad controls. This developer documentation helps explain why control assumptions can differ by device and game; it does not provide a universal player-side remapping fix.
Project Lyra’s documentation is about Zune HD modding, not a general controls patch for homebrew games. Avoid changing firmware or installing a mod solely to fix unresponsive controls unless instructions for that specific game and device support the change. If official games stopped working after homebrew
A November 2022 discussion on r/Zune includes a community suggestion to delete and reinstall official games as a possible temporary fix. It is anecdotal, not a confirmed or tested procedure. Before trying it, check whether the official games actually fail at launch and whether they still appear correctly on the device. Record your current setup before removing or resyncing content.
The same discussion mentions a factory wipe as a possible longer-term attempt, but does not establish that a reset works. Treat it as an unverified last resort, not a default troubleshooting step. Read the discussion about official games becoming corrupted.

Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Record the setup: Note the Zune generation and model, firmware, game name and version if known, installation route, and reproducible symptom.
- Verify the target device: Check whether the game is for Zune HD or an earlier Zune using the game’s instructions or the relevant archive resources.
- For Zune HD, check installation: Follow the title’s documented process, confirm its files are in the expected Applications folder when applicable, and check that Zune software completes the sync.
- For controls, verify expected input: Use the game’s instructions to confirm which buttons, touch input, or motion input it expects. Do not assume a general remapping option exists.
- If official games fail, assess before changing content: Confirm which games fail and whether they remain listed. Consider the community’s delete-and-reinstall suggestion only as an anecdotal possibility, and preserve setup details first.
- If the problem continues, seek title-specific help: Share the model, firmware, game, installation method, and steps that reproduce the failure. The archive’s game and troubleshooting resources may point to the relevant instructions.
