Crackling, static, popping, or distorted sound on a gaming laptop is usually a symptom of an output selection, enhancement setting, audio format, driver, or Windows audio-service problem—not automatic proof that the speakers are damaged. Start by comparing outputs and apps, then work through reversible Windows fixes before seeking model-specific service.
This procedure applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so systems that remain on it should be treated as unsupported for future security and driver changes.

First, establish exactly when the crackling happens
Do not begin by opening the laptop or buying replacement speakers. A useful diagnosis starts with a repeatable pattern. The same noise can come from software, a single application, one output device, or the laptop’s internal speaker path.
Record the pattern
- Note whether the sound is present continuously or appears only while a game is running.
- Check whether it began after a Windows update, graphics-driver update, audio-driver update, game installation, or change in audio software.
- Test at low, medium, and high volume. Record whether the symptom changes with volume rather than assuming loudness is the cause.
- Play more than one audio source: a system sound, a local audio file, a browser video, and a game. A problem in one application is investigated differently from a problem across all playback.
- Write down which outputs are affected: built-in speakers, a wired headset, a USB headset, Bluetooth audio, or external speakers.
These observations prioritize the next test; they do not prove that a particular component has failed. For example, a game-only symptom can still involve a driver or Windows setting, while a speaker-only symptom can still be caused by the software path feeding that speaker.

Use an output comparison to narrow the fault
Connect a known-working headset or external speaker if one is already available. Borrowing a device is preferable to buying one solely for diagnosis. Play the same audio through the laptop speakers and the external device without changing other settings.
| Result | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in speakers crackle; known-working external device is clear | The problem may be limited to the laptop speaker path, its connector, or settings associated with that output. | It does not establish that a speaker driver or other internal part has failed. |
| Built-in speakers and external device both crackle | Prioritize Windows output selection, enhancements, default format, drivers, and audio services. | It does not identify one specific software cause. |
| Only Bluetooth audio crackles | Continue with output-specific checks and consider whether the symptom follows that device. | It does not establish a laptop hardware fault. |
| Only one game or application crackles | Compare that application with other sources and note any update or configuration change affecting it. | It does not rule out a system driver issue. |
An HP service guide recommends testing with verified working external speakers or a headset. Treat this as a practical comparison, not as a universal hardware-diagnosis standard.
Confirm Windows is using the intended output
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Sound.
- Under the output section, select the speakers, headset, USB device, Bluetooth device, or external speakers you actually want to test.
- Check the volume level and make sure mute is not enabled.
- If several devices are connected, temporarily disconnect the ones you are not testing. This prevents Windows from sending sound to a different output than the one you are listening to.
- Play the same test audio again and record whether the crackling follows the selected output.
Windows 10 uses the same general Sound settings concept, although labels and layout can differ. Microsoft’s guidance for distorted or crackling audio covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Why this check matters
Gaming laptops commonly expose several playback endpoints at once: internal speakers, a headset jack, HDMI or DisplayPort audio from a graphics adapter, USB audio, and Bluetooth. Selecting the wrong endpoint can sound like a failed speaker because you are monitoring a different device than expected. Confirm the endpoint before changing drivers or hardware.

Disable audio enhancements, then retest
Microsoft states that “Audio enhancements can cause distortion or crackling on some devices.” Enhancements can be supplied by Windows or by the laptop’s audio utility, and behavior varies by model.
- In Settings > System > Sound, select the output device that crackles.
- Find the device’s audio-enhancement control. Depending on the Windows version and driver, it may be labeled Audio enhancements, Enhance audio, or a similar option.
- Set enhancements to Off for the test.
- Play the same audio source at the same volume.
- If the noise disappears, leave enhancements off while you test games and other applications. You can later re-enable them one at a time to identify whether a particular effect is responsible.
Do not assume that an enhancement setting is globally applied. Repeat the check for each output that exhibits the symptom. A setting that affects the internal speakers may not affect a USB or Bluetooth device.
Try a different available default audio format
If disabling enhancements does not help, test another format offered for the selected output. Microsoft recommends trying a different available default format rather than declaring one sample rate or bit depth universally correct.

- Open the selected device’s advanced sound properties from Settings > System > Sound.
- Locate the Default format control or equivalent advanced format selector.
- Choose a different format that Windows actually lists for that device.
- Apply the change and play the same test audio.
- Record the original and tested formats so you can return to the previous setting if the result is worse.
Only test formats that the device exposes. Do not install an unofficial driver or force a value that is not offered by the laptop’s audio stack. If changing the format has no effect, restore the original value and continue.

Update the audio driver safely
A driver update is appropriate when crackling began after a system change or persists across applications and outputs. Identify the exact audio device first; gaming laptops can contain several audio-related devices, and a graphics driver may provide a separate HDMI or DisplayPort endpoint.
Check the device in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager from the Windows search box.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Note the exact device names. Also check whether any device shows a warning icon.
- Right-click the audio device you are testing and choose Update driver.
- Use the available Windows search option, then restart the laptop if Windows installs an update.
- Retest the same output, application, and volume used in earlier checks.
An automatic search may report that the best driver is already installed even when the laptop maker has a newer, model-specific package. That result is not a reason to download a random package from a driver-collection site.
Reinstall the driver from the laptop maker
If updating does not resolve the symptom, Microsoft advises reinstalling the latest driver from the device manufacturer. Use the support page for the laptop’s exact model and regional edition. Manufacturer bundles can include a matching audio driver, firmware, chipset components, or a required audio control application.
Identify the exact model before downloading
- Use the model name and full model number shown on the laptop’s label, original documentation, or Windows system-information screen.
- Confirm whether the support page distinguishes Windows 11 and Windows 10 packages.
- Prefer the audio package listed for your model over a generic package for a similar-looking laptop.
- Do not assume a generic Realtek package is correct. The codec, amplifier, firmware, and manufacturer utility may be specific to the laptop.
Remove and reinstall through Device Manager
- Download the manufacturer’s current audio package before removing the existing device, and save it locally.
- In Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the affected audio device and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you have the correct replacement package ready and understand that the device may temporarily use a basic driver.
- Confirm the uninstall and restart Windows.
- Run the manufacturer’s installer, following its prompts. Some packages install a companion audio utility as part of the same bundle.
- Restart again if requested, select the intended output in Settings > System > Sound, and repeat the controlled playback test.
MSI’s published instructions are specific to its notebooks and should not be treated as a universal procedure for every gaming-laptop brand. The general rule is consistent: obtain the package from the support page for the exact model and avoid unverified download sites.

Restart Windows audio services
Windows can have a functioning driver but a stuck audio service. Microsoft’s crackling-audio guidance includes restarting both Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Press the Windows key, type Services, and open the Services app.
- Find Windows Audio in the list.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Stop, wait briefly, then choose Start.
- Repeat the same action for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Close the Services app and test the affected output again.
Restarting these services is reversible and does not replace the driver or change the selected format. If the crackling immediately returns after launching one application, note that application and its start time; that pattern is useful when seeking support.
Use the symptom pattern to choose the next branch
| Pattern | Next priority | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| All apps and all outputs | Recheck the selected output, disable enhancements, test another available format, update or reinstall the model-specific driver, and restart both audio services. | Windows version, device names in Device Manager, and the date the symptom began. |
| Only the built-in speakers | Repeat the enhancement and format tests for the internal-speaker endpoint, then compare with a known-working external device. | Whether the external device remains clear at the same volume and in the same applications. |
| Only one application or game | Compare with system sounds, a browser video, and another game. Note application updates and whether the issue appears only after the game starts. | Application name and version, in-game audio settings, and whether other outputs reproduce the noise. |
| Started after a Windows or driver change | Check the manufacturer support page for a current model-specific package and document the update that preceded the symptom. | Update date, Windows version, driver version, and any error shown in Device Manager. |
| Only Bluetooth audio | Confirm that Windows has selected the intended Bluetooth output and compare with the laptop speakers or a wired device. | Which outputs remain clear and whether the symptom follows the Bluetooth device. |
The table helps prioritize tests; none of these patterns independently diagnoses a failed component.

Low-priority interference check
An HP service guide also suggests checking for possible nearby communication-device interference when investigating audio symptoms. The available evidence does not establish this as a general cause of gaming-laptop crackling, so treat it as a quick, low-priority check rather than a main theory.

When to contact the manufacturer or a repair provider
Escalate after you have confirmed the intended output, tested with enhancements off, tried another available format, checked or reinstalled the correct driver, restarted the two Windows audio services, and compared a known-working external device.
Contact support when
- The issue persists across multiple applications and outputs after the software checks.
- The built-in speakers consistently crackle while an external device remains clear.
- Device Manager shows an audio error, the device disappears, or the manufacturer installer fails.
- The symptom began after a hardware repair, liquid exposure, drop, or other physical event.
Provide the laptop maker with the exact model, Windows version, audio-device names from Device Manager, when the problem began, which applications reproduce it, and which outputs are affected. Explain every test that changed or failed to change the symptom. Ask for model-specific support before opening the chassis or replacing an internal part.
If the manufacturer directs you to a qualified repair provider, follow that recommendation. The available evidence does not justify naming a particular replacement speaker, amplifier, cable, or paid utility as necessary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What not to do
- Do not conclude that crackling proves the speakers are physically damaged.
- Do not install drivers from unverified download sites or choose a package solely because it says “Realtek.”
- Do not force a sample rate or bit depth that Windows does not list for the device.
- Do not buy a new headset as a supposed repair. Use an existing or borrowed known-working device for comparison first.
- Do not perform an internal repair before obtaining model-specific guidance.
- Do not treat a clear external headset as proof of one failed internal part; it only narrows the affected path.
