Record the console model and revision, firmware or core version, exact symptom, controller path, display chain, power supply, and any recent change. Then test input, video, and audio independently. A Super Nt, Analogue Pocket, Mega Sg, and MiSTer can show the same symptom for entirely different reasons, so use the instructions for the hardware you actually own.
Start with a controlled fault record
Before unplugging anything, write down the setup as it currently works or fails. This prevents a troubleshooting session from becoming an unrepeatable collection of changes.

- Hardware: record the exact product, model revision if known, cartridge or core, and whether an expansion, dock, IO board, adapter, receiver, switch, scaler, or AV receiver is connected.
- Software: note system firmware, MiSTer core version, and any INI profile in use. Do not assume that a firmware menu or update process is shared between products.
- Symptom: state whether the menu appears, whether every game or only one game/core fails, whether the picture is intermittent, and whether sound fails with the picture or separately.
- Controller path: identify wired USB, Bluetooth, a proprietary receiver, an original-controller adapter, or an IO-board connection. Record which controller and which port are involved.
- Display path: list the TV or monitor input and every device between the console and display, including an AV receiver, HDMI switch, scaler, dock, or direct-video adapter.
- Recent changes: include a new cable, firmware update, controller, television, core, cartridge, or power supply.
Change one variable at a time and test the same known-good menu or game after each change. If a second controller works, that is useful evidence, but it does not by itself identify whether the first controller, receiver, cable, port, or mapping is at fault.

Use this isolation order
- Confirm power: use the supply specified for the product and check that its indicator or startup behavior is normal.
- Test the console without a game-specific assumption: determine whether the system menu appears and whether the failure affects every title or only one cartridge/core.
- Test controller input independently: configure or pair the controller before loading a game where the platform permits it.
- Reduce the video path: connect directly to the display, remove intermediate equipment, reseat both HDMI ends, and select the correct input.
- Separate audio from video: check the transport mode and test whether sound returns when an intermediary is bypassed.
- Restore the normal chain stepwise: add the receiver, switch, scaler, or adapter back one at a time so the failing link is identifiable.
Controller does not respond, pairs unreliably, or maps incorrectly
Super Nt with an SN30 or Retro Receiver
For an SN30, begin by fully charging the controller. During Retro Receiver diagnosis, pair only one controller at a time; multiple pairing attempts can make it unclear which device is being tested. Analogue’s Super Nt troubleshooting guide explicitly says, “Make sure you are trying to pair only one controller at a time.” Install the latest receiver firmware using the receiver manufacturer’s current instructions before treating a pairing failure as a console fault.

After charging and updating, remove other wireless controllers from the test. Power-cycle the console, put the receiver into pairing mode, and test the same controller again. If the controller pairs but buttons are wrong, check the controller’s own mode or layout and then test another known-compatible controller. Do not infer that a successful Bluetooth pairing proves every input mapping is correct.
MiSTer USB controllers
MiSTer configuration is performed in the MiSTer main menu when no core is loaded. Plug in the controller, open the controller or input-configuration menu, and assign the required buttons. Load the affected core only after the device is recognized. Some cores expose additional controls in their on-screen display (OSD), so open the core OSD and configure those controls when the main-menu mapping does not cover them.
MiSTer identifies USB devices by their hardware identifiers. The FAQ warns that devices with different VendorID/ProductID values may need to be configured again when you switch between them, even when their shape and button labels look identical. A new revision of a controller can therefore require a separate mapping.

Original console controllers on MiSTer
MiSTer supports original controllers through USB adapters and, with compatible hardware and cores, through the IO board User port using SNAC. The MiSTer FAQ states: “Yes, there are many USB adapters for original console controllers available, see the usb controller recommendations below.” Compatibility depends on the controller family, adapter, core, and connection method. Confirm all four before buying or changing an adapter.
A direct USB game controller is usually the simpler diagnostic baseline because it removes the original-controller adapter from the signal path. Once the core responds correctly, reconnect the adapter and original pad and configure that device separately if MiSTer presents a different identifier.
Wired versus wireless: choose for diagnosis, not just convenience
| Path | What it removes or adds | Best diagnostic use |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB controller | No wireless pairing or battery; still depends on cable, port, hub, and mapping | Baseline input test on MiSTer |
| Wireless controller with receiver | Adds battery state, pairing state, and receiver firmware | Normal Super Nt use after a wired or single-controller test |
| Original controller plus USB adapter | Adds adapter compatibility and another device identifier | Test only after the core and a direct controller path work |
| SNAC through a compatible IO board | Requires suitable IO hardware and core support | Specialist original-controller path; verify compatibility first |
“No video output on TV” or an intermittent picture
Super Nt: follow the documented direct-HDMI sequence
Analogue’s Super Nt guide requires the console connected by HDMI to a TV with the TV powered on while you troubleshoot. Follow this order:
- Confirm the Super Nt is on current firmware according to Analogue’s support instructions.
- Try another known-good HDMI cable. A spare cable is a diagnostic tool, not a guaranteed repair.
- Try another power outlet and use the included power supply.
- Remove an AV receiver, HDMI switch, scaler, or other intermediary and connect the Super Nt directly to the TV.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Select the input that actually has the cable attached. Analogue’s wording is direct: “Make sure your TV is in the right mode (HDMI 1, HDMI 2 etc).”
If the direct connection works, reconnect intermediate devices one at a time. The result identifies a compatibility or handshake problem in the removed part of the chain; it does not prove the TV or console is permanently faulty.

MiSTer: distinguish a global failure from a single-core black screen
If MiSTer displays its main menu and other cores work but one core produces a black screen, the problem may be a refresh-rate or display-mode mismatch rather than a dead FPGA board. The MiSTer FAQ suggests trying:
vsync_adjust=0
Apply the change in the appropriate configuration, restart or reload the core, and test again. This is a setting-based diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix; it can alter synchronization behavior and should be recorded so you can restore the previous value.
A black screen affecting the menu and every core requires a different branch: return to direct HDMI, verify power, reseat the cable, and remove switches, receivers, scalers, and docks before changing core-specific settings.
MiSTer INI settings that affect the picture
MiSTer’s INI documentation describes several settings that can change what a display accepts:

vscale_modecontrols vertical scaling behavior. A mode that works on one display may not suit another.vscale_borderchanges the treatment of unused vertical space and can make a valid image appear different without indicating a hardware failure.hdmi_limitedselects HDMI color-range behavior. A mismatch usually presents as incorrect blacks or whites rather than total loss of sync.direct_videois supported only with certain adapter chipsets. Do not enable it on the assumption that every HDMI setup supports direct video.vsync_adjustcan be tested at0for a core-specific black screen when the display may not support the selected refresh rate.
Change one option at a time, keep a copy of the previous INI file or profile, and retain a working way to edit or restore it. Never transfer MiSTer setting names to an Analogue product; those platforms have different menus and configuration systems.
Picture works but HDMI audio is missing or wrong
Check whether MiSTer is deliberately suppressing HDMI audio
MiSTer’s INI documentation defines dvi_mode as a DVI mode over the HDMI connector. Its documented behavior is explicit: “dvi_mode – DVI mode over the HDMI connection, this disables audio transmission over HDMI when turned on.” If video is present but HDMI audio is absent, inspect this setting before replacing hardware.
MiSTer documents HDMI audio sampling at 48 kHz by default and an optional 96 kHz setting. The documentation notes that changing the sampling rate can help with systems that use unusual rates. Treat this as a targeted compatibility test, not a first-line change: record the original value, change only the sampling setting, and test the same core and display.
Isolate the audio path
- Test the console directly into the display, bypassing an AV receiver, switch, scaler, or dock.
- Confirm that the display is not muted and that its selected input is the one carrying the video signal.
- If audio returns directly, add the removed device back and test after each addition.
- If the display still has no sound, check the platform-specific audio configuration before assuming an HDMI hardware failure.
The direct-display sequence is documented for Super Nt video troubleshooting and is also a sensible signal-path isolation method for audio. It is not evidence that every Analogue model has the same audio controls as MiSTer. For Pocket or Mega Sg, use that model’s own manual and support page for audio-output behavior.

Cartridge errors that look like a console failure
On Super Nt, a game that fails to boot, resets, or behaves erratically can have dirty or oxidized cartridge contacts. Analogue recommends cleaning the cartridge pins with 90% or stronger rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs, allowing the contacts to dry, and then reseating the cartridge straight and fully. This procedure applies to the cited Super Nt cartridge-contact symptoms; it does not diagnose controller, HDMI, or audio faults.
Test one known-good cartridge after cleaning. Do not repeatedly force a cartridge at an angle, and do not use the cartridge-cleaning procedure as a substitute for checking power or HDMI when the system menu itself is missing.
Model-specific boundaries: Super Nt, Pocket, Mega Sg, and MiSTer
| Platform | Evidence-supported checks | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Analogue Super Nt | Current firmware, included power supply, alternate HDMI cable, direct TV connection, correct TV input, one-controller pairing, receiver firmware, and cartridge-contact cleaning for cartridge symptoms | That its menu labels, firmware process, or audio settings match MiSTer or another Analogue system |
| MiSTer | Main-menu controller setup, core OSD configuration, VendorID/ProductID reconfiguration, USB adapters or SNAC for original controllers, vsync_adjust=0 for a core-specific black screen, INI video settings, and dvi_mode/audio-rate checks |
That every core supports the same controls or that every direct-video adapter chipset is compatible |
| Analogue Pocket | Use the Pocket-specific support and manual pages for game errors, SD-card insertion, third-party power and USB-C cable questions, and save-state issues | That Super Nt’s power, HDMI, controller, or firmware procedure transfers unchanged. The listed Pocket manual is dated 2024-04-18, but the exposed troubleshooting headings do not establish detailed procedures for every symptom. |
| Analogue Mega Sg | Use Mega Sg support and its own manual for firmware, TV compatibility, controller lag, video lag, and Sega CD/Mega CD HDMI stereo questions | That Super Nt or MiSTer audio/video settings apply. The support listing identifies firmware v4.9 dated 2023-05-04 and a manual dated 2021-12-08; those dates do not make the products interchangeable. |
Decision tables for the fastest next test
Controller symptoms
| Observed result | Next test | What it isolates |
|---|---|---|
| No controller works | Use a direct wired controller where supported, configure it in the platform’s main menu, and test without a core or game loaded | Console port, global mapping, hub, or platform configuration |
| One wireless controller fails to pair | Charge it fully, remove other controllers, pair only it, and update the receiver firmware | Battery, pairing state, receiver firmware, or that controller |
| Controller works in menu but not in one core | Open that core’s OSD and configure its input separately | Core-specific mapping or device ID |
| Original pad fails through adapter | Test a direct USB controller, then verify adapter and core compatibility | Adapter path rather than the FPGA platform as a whole |
Video and audio symptoms
| Observed result | Next test | Likely branch |
|---|---|---|
| No menu and no picture | Use included power supply, alternate HDMI cable, correct input, and direct display connection | Power, cable, input selection, handshake, or intermediary |
| Menu works; one MiSTer core is black | Try vsync_adjust=0 and test that core again |
Refresh-rate or core/display compatibility |
| Picture works; no MiSTer HDMI audio | Check that dvi_mode is off, then test direct to the display |
Intentional DVI mode or an intermediary’s audio handling |
| Colors look wrong but sync is stable | Review hdmi_limited and restore the display’s expected range |
Color-range mismatch rather than signal loss |
| Audio fails only through receiver or switch | Bypass it, then add it back alone | Intermediate-device compatibility |
What to change, and what not to change
- Change first: cable seating, selected input, direct-versus-intermediated connection, one-controller pairing, and use of the specified power supply.
- Change deliberately: firmware, receiver firmware, MiSTer INI values, refresh synchronization, HDMI color range, and audio sample rate. Record the old value before editing.
- Do not generalize: a MiSTer INI option is not an Analogue menu setting; a Super Nt receiver procedure is not a Pocket procedure; and a cartridge-cleaning step is not a remedy for missing HDMI audio.
- Do not add products as guesses: a spare HDMI cable, a compatible USB controller, or an original-controller adapter can help isolate a path, but compatibility must be verified and none is a guaranteed repair.
When the evidence points to hardware service
Escalate after the same symptom survives a direct display connection, a known-good cable, the specified power supply, removal of intermediate equipment, and a documented configuration reset or test. Include the fault record with the console model, firmware or core version, display model and input, cable and power-supply details, controller path, exact steps already tried, and whether the menu or other cores work. This gives support a reproducible failure instead of a general statement that the console “doesn’t work.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a product whose support page does not expose a detailed procedure for your exact symptom, say so and stay within that model’s documentation. Pocket and Mega Sg require this discipline particularly: their listed support topics establish where to look, but they do not establish that Super Nt or MiSTer instructions apply.
