A Deno application can run successfully and still fail on Cloudflare Workers because the runtimes expose different APIs and execution models. Workers is built around JavaScript standards and web APIs, with only a defined subset of Node.js compatibility; it is not a Deno runtime or a complete Node.js server.
Fix migration errors by isolating the first failing import, global, binding, filesystem operation, or package assumption; reproducing it in the Worker runtime; checking the relevant compatibility date and flag; and then replacing or configuring that exact dependency. A successful import or build is not proof that the methods called later are implemented.

Why Deno code works locally but fails in Workers
Deno and Cloudflare Workers solve different runtime problems. Deno includes a compatibility layer for many Node.js APIs and npm packages, while Workers is designed to be JavaScript-standards compliant and web-interoperable. Cloudflare describes the Workers runtime as “designed to be JavaScript standards compliant and web-interoperable” in its Runtime APIs documentation.
That design favors fetch, Request, Response, Web Streams, Web Crypto, timers, and other browser-compatible interfaces. Workers also supplies a subset of Node.js APIs, controlled by compatibility settings and individual feature requirements. Deno-specific globals and assumptions about a long-running server, local disk, child processes, native addons, or install scripts do not automatically transfer.

The practical consequence is that “it runs in Deno” answers only whether the code works in Deno’s environment. It does not establish that the same import resolves in Workers, that the imported methods are functional, or that state and configuration behave the same way.
Start with the first reproducible failure
Do not begin by replacing every import or enabling every compatibility option. First determine where the failure occurs and preserve the exact conditions that produce it.
- Use the same entry point and lockfile. Run the build, local Worker development server, and deployed Worker with the same dependency lock and application entry point. A different entry point can hide a package path that only production reaches.
- Classify the stage. Record whether the error occurs during module resolution, bundling, Worker initialization, or while handling a request. “Module not found” during bundling requires a different fix from “method is not a function” during a request.
- Save the complete error. Keep the first message, stack trace, module name, and the request or code path that triggered it. Later errors are often consequences of the first unsupported assumption.
- Keep source locations useful. Enable source maps for JavaScript or TypeScript Workers. Cloudflare’s Workers best-practices guidance recommends source maps so captured exceptions can identify original files and lines instead of only bundled offsets.
A minimal reproduction should exercise the failing feature in an actual Worker, not just in a Deno shell. This prevents a local polyfill, development server, or Deno compatibility layer from masking the incompatibility.
Identify the assumption behind the error
For the first failing line or dependency, write down what it assumes. The category usually points to the correct documentation and remedy.

|---|---|---|
| An import cannot be resolved | A Node built-in, Deno module, package export, or local node_modules layout |

Runtime environment access copied from Node or Deno | Node compatibility flags, build-time replacement, and Worker environment bindings |
| A file is missing or disappears | Persistent local filesystem storage | Whether the path is under the bundled virtual filesystem or temporary /tmp, and whether a storage binding is required |
| A native package fails during install or startup | Native addon compilation, lifecycle scripts, or process APIs | Whether the package can run without native code and whether its install assumptions are supported by the Worker bundler |
| Code works only after a Deno-specific setup | Deno’s Node compatibility behavior or dependency resolution | The package’s actual Worker requirements rather than Deno’s compatibility result |
The reviewed documentation does not describe a direct Deno API-compatibility layer in Workers. Treat every Deno API, Node built-in, and package-specific behavior as an item to verify against the Workers runtime API reference and the relevant compatibility page.
Check the compatibility date and flags before changing code
Workers uses a compatibility_date to select runtime behavior. The date is not merely metadata: Cloudflare can change an API or default behavior behind a date boundary. Inspect the date and any compatibility_flags in Wrangler or the deployment configuration before interpreting an error. Cloudflare explains the model in its compatibility-dates documentation.

Node.js compatibility by date
As of August 4, 2026, supported Node.js compatibility is enabled by default for Workers with compatibility dates on or after 2026-08-04. Workers using an earlier date can opt in with the nodejs_compat flag. The change is documented in Cloudflare’s August 4, 2026 changelog entry and the compatibility-flags reference.
| Worker compatibility date | Node.js compatibility setting | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Before 2026-08-04 | Add nodejs_compat when the application needs supported Node APIs |
Opt-in behavior; confirm the flag is present in the deployed configuration |
| 2026-08-04 or later | Supported Node.js compatibility is enabled by default | No flag is needed for the default compatibility layer, but only documented APIs and methods are covered |
Do not update a production date blindly just to make an import pass. Cloudflare recommends reviewing flag changes and testing after updating an existing project. A date change can alter behavior in unrelated code. For diagnosis, change one setting at a time, deploy or run the corresponding local Worker, and record whether the first error changed.
Feature-specific date requirements
Node compatibility is not one all-or-nothing switch. Individual features can have their own date or flag requirements. Cloudflare’s flags documentation lists examples including process.env behavior from 2025-04-01, node:http and node:https from 2025-08-15, and http.server from 2025-09-01 when Node compatibility is enabled. Check the entry for the exact API your package calls, not just the project-wide date.
Do not confuse an import that resolves with a working API
Some Node.js modules are importable in Workers as non-functional stubs. A package may therefore pass dependency checks or bundle successfully, then fail when application code invokes a method. Cloudflare marks these cases in the module-by-module compatibility documentation.
For each Node import, make a three-part check:
- Resolution: Does the module import under the deployed date and flags?
- Implementation: Is the specific method used by the package implemented, or is the module a stub or partial implementation?
- Semantics: Does it behave as the package expects under Workers’ request and event model?
If the first check passes but the second or third fails, adding another alias or changing the bundler will not make the API functional. Replace the call with a web-standard interface, select a Workers-compatible package, or isolate the unsupported boundary.

Workers’ web-oriented runtime is usually the most portable target for new code. Before reaching for a Node compatibility flag, check whether the operation can use a standard API:

- Use

- Use Web Crypto for cryptographic operations exposed by the standard API.
- Use URL and URL-based request construction instead of parsing with a server-only helper.
This is not a claim that every Node feature has a one-line replacement. The decision depends on the package’s exact behavior, streaming needs, error semantics, and data sources. If a Node API is required, verify that API in Cloudflare’s documentation and retain the required date or flag.
Fix environment variables and bindings
Environment access is a frequent migration fault because Deno, Node, bundlers, and Workers can all expose configuration differently. A local value visible to Deno is not automatically a runtime value in a Worker.
Why process.env can surprise you
Cloudflare documents that process.env behavior depends on Node.js compatibility and the nodejs_compat_populate_process_env setting. In addition, Wrangler or the Cloudflare Vite plugin may replace process.env.NODE_ENV at build time. That replacement is not the same as a general runtime environment object. See Cloudflare’s process documentation for the current behavior and requirements.

When a package reads process.env.MY_SETTING, determine whether it reads during bundling, module initialization, or request handling. A build-time substitution can satisfy the first case while leaving a runtime lookup empty.
Use Worker environment bindings
Cloudflare documents importing env from cloudflare:workers to access environment variables and other bindings. Bind secrets and configuration through the Worker environment, then pass the required values into application code explicitly instead of relying on a process-global object.
import { env } from "cloudflare:workers";
export default {
async fetch(request) {
const apiKey = env.API_KEY;
if (!apiKey) {
return new Response("Missing API_KEY binding", { status: 500 });
}
// Use apiKey for the request path that needs it.
return new Response("Configuration loaded");
}
};
The example illustrates the access boundary; configure the binding in the Worker deployment and keep secrets out of source. If a third-party package insists on process.env, verify whether the documented compatibility setting can support it. Otherwise, wrap the package, pass configuration through its supported options, or choose a package that accepts explicit values.

Replace persistent filesystem assumptions
Cloudflare’s node:fs support uses a virtual filesystem, not a server disk. Cloudflare’s fs documentation specifies that files bundled under /bundle are read-only. The /tmp directory is writable but temporary and request-scoped; files do not provide durable application storage across requests.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Classify every file operation
- Bundled asset: A file included under
/bundlecan be read but not modified. - Temporary work data:
/tmpcan hold data needed during the current request, but code must tolerate its disappearance. - Persistent data: User records, queues, uploads, caches that must survive requests, and generated artifacts belong in an appropriate storage binding or external service.
During migration, search for writes to relative paths, startup-created directories, lock files, SQLite files, session files, and code that expects a previous request to have left a file behind. Decide whether each item is an immutable asset, request-local scratch data, or durable state. Only the first two fit the documented virtual filesystem model; durable state requires a different storage design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Deno’s compatibility notes as a checklist, not a Workers guarantee
Deno states that most Node.js code can run in Deno, while also documenting partial or missing Node APIs and package-specific assumptions. Its Node and npm Compatibility guide calls out dependencies that expect a particular local node_modules layout, native addons, and install or lifecycle scripts. The Deno migration guide provides additional prompts for dependency triage.
Those notes explain why a dependency may need a particular Deno installation or runtime arrangement. They are not a compatibility matrix for Workers. For every package, inspect its entry points and test the feature it uses in a Worker.
Package triage questions
- Does the package import a Node built-in, a Deno namespace, or a browser API?
- Does it execute an install script, compile a native addon, or load a binary at runtime?
- Does it assume a writable and persistent current directory?
- Does it read configuration from
process.envduring module initialization? - Does it spawn a process, create a server, or depend on long-lived process state?
- Can its required feature be reached through a web-standard API or a Worker binding?
For context, Deno reports that more than 75% of Node’s own test suite passes in Deno 2.8. That figure describes Deno’s Node compatibility testing; it is not a Deno-to-Workers success rate and should not be used to predict a Worker deployment.

“Cannot find module” for a Node built-in
Confirm the Worker’s compatibility date and whether nodejs_compat is required for that date. Then check the exact built-in in Cloudflare’s documentation. If the module is supported, enable only the required compatibility setting and retest. If it is unsupported, replace the operation with a standard API or a package designed for Workers. If the import resolves after the setting but the call fails, continue to the method-level implementation check; the import result alone is insufficient.
Best Value
“process is not defined” or an empty environment value
Identify whether the code expects a build-time constant or a request-time secret. Check the process compatibility page and the nodejs_compat_populate_process_env requirement. For Worker-owned code, move access to env bindings and pass values into the function that needs them. For a dependency, use its explicit configuration API or replace it if it cannot operate without a Node process global.
File writes succeed, then data vanishes
Check the path. A bundled path is read-only, and /tmp is temporary and request-scoped. Keep scratch files within the request that creates them; move durable records or uploads to a storage binding or external service.
A package fails on a native addon or install script
Determine whether the package’s feature can run in pure JavaScript or through Web APIs. Deno may accommodate a dependency after a particular install arrangement, while Workers may not provide native compilation, process execution, or the expected lifecycle. Remove the native boundary, choose a compatible implementation, or redesign that feature as a service call.

This usually means the bundle contains an import whose method is unsupported, or the failure path depends on a binding or request-only value. Exercise the exact request path in local and deployed Workers, and inspect the stack trace with source maps. Check the API method and its compatibility requirements rather than changing unrelated imports.
Compare fixes before choosing one
Use the following decision framework for each incompatibility. It prevents a compatibility flag from becoming a permanent substitute for an unsupported runtime assumption.
| Question | Compatibility setting | Code or dependency change |
|---|---|---|
| Is the exact API implemented? | Appropriate only when Cloudflare documents the module and method as functional | Required when the module is a stub, missing, or semantically unsuitable |
| What configuration is needed? | Record the required compatibility_date and flag, including feature-specific boundaries |
May remove a flag dependency, but still needs Worker deployment testing |
| Can a web API do the job? | Keep compatibility only if the Node behavior is genuinely necessary | Prefer fetch, Web Streams, Web Crypto, and other standards where they cover the requirement |
| Does the package assume process, disk, native code, or long-lived state? | A flag rarely changes these execution-model assumptions | Refactor the boundary, pass explicit configuration, or select another package |
| Has the result been verified in deployment? | Test the exact Worker date and flags, not just a local Deno run | Run the same request paths after the change and after any date update |
Validate after every change
Compatibility troubleshooting is complete only when the application’s real paths work in the deployed runtime. Use this checklist:
- Build with the production entry point and locked dependencies.
- Run the Worker locally with the same compatibility date and flags used for deployment.
- Exercise success and failure paths that call the changed API.
- Verify secrets, configuration, and other bindings in the Worker environment.
- Test file behavior across separate requests so accidental persistence is exposed.
- Check cold initialization as well as a warm request sequence.
- Inspect source-mapped exceptions for any remaining unsupported method.
- When updating
compatibility_date, read Cloudflare’s flag history and rerun the application test paths before deploying.
Keep a short migration record for each dependency: failing assumption, evidence from the Workers documentation, selected fix, required date or flag, and the deployed test that proves it. This makes a later date update or package upgrade diagnosable instead of turning it into another broad runtime guess.

What “compatible” should mean for this migration
A Deno-to-Workers migration is compatible when the Worker can resolve the dependency, execute every method the application uses, obtain configuration through bindings, handle filesystem needs within the virtual model, and pass its real request tests under the deployed compatibility date. Deno’s successful execution and Node test coverage can inform dependency triage, but neither substitutes for that Worker-specific verification.
