Windows App is Microsoft’s remote-access client for connecting to Windows 365 Cloud PCs, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and—in supported scenarios—remote PCs. It is different from troubleshooting an ordinary Windows application. Start by identifying whether the failure is an account problem, missing administrator-provisioned resources, a network or service connection problem, a locally broken client, or a platform limitation. Each category has a different fix and often a different person responsible.

For a connection failure, verify internet access, update Windows App, and compare it with the browser client. Use Inspect connection for Windows 365 or Troubleshoot & repair for Microsoft Dev Box when those controls are available. If Windows App itself will not open, use the repair or reinstall path for your platform. Persistent account, provisioning, performance, or connection problems normally require your organization’s administrator.

Identify the symptom before changing anything

Do not begin by reinstalling the client. First match what you see to the problem category below. Windows App uses an existing work, school, or other organization account; it does not manage that account’s password.

Windows App can run on Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android/Chrome OS, or a web browser, but the available features differ by platform and service. The current known issues and limitations list is therefore part of diagnosis, not just a last resort.

Run the quick connection triage

These are Microsoft’s basic checks for trouble connecting or for an unexpectedly empty list of remote devices and apps:

  1. Confirm that the device is online. Open another trusted website or service. If other traffic is failing, fix the local network or captive-portal problem first.
  2. Update Windows App. An outdated client can behave differently from the service it is connecting to. Install available updates for the platform you are using.
  3. Try the browser client. If the browser version works while the installed client fails, the account and service are less likely to be the immediate cause; concentrate on the local app, its cache, or a platform limitation. If both fail, record that result for the administrator.
  4. Use the diagnostic offered by the service. Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, and Azure Virtual Desktop expose different tools, described below.

Do not assume that a browser test proves every feature is available there. Browser support depends on the browser, device, and service, and some browser limitations are documented separately.

Compare one variable at a time

A useful test changes only one factor. Try the same account in the browser on the same device, then—if permitted—try the same account on another network or device. If only one client fails, focus on that installation. If every client and device fails for one account, an identity or assignment problem is more likely. If several users fail at the same time, report the shared timing and resource type because the administrator may need to investigate the hosted service or gateway.

When sign-in or a password fails

Use the organization’s account process

Windows App does not create, unlock, or reset the account used to sign in. If your password changed, expired, or was forgotten, follow the password-reset or authentication process supplied by your employer, school, or service provider. If that process succeeds but Windows App still rejects the account, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling the client.

Capture the useful details

Tell the administrator which platform you used, the account type, the exact error text, whether the same account works in the browser client, and when the failure began. Do not send a password or one-time authentication code. These details help separate an identity problem from a client problem.

When Windows App says no resources are available

A successful sign-in does not guarantee that a Cloud PC, desktop, or application has been assigned. If Windows App displays:

“It appears that your system administrator has not yet configured any resources for <username>. Please choose another account or try again. If you believe you have received this message in error, please contact your system administrator.”

Microsoft identifies this as a resource-provisioning issue: no resources have been configured for that user. Contact the organization administrator and ask them to verify the assignment, entitlement, and service status. Reinstalling Windows App will not create a missing assignment. You can still perform the internet, update, and browser checks in case the list is failing to load, but an administrator must correct an unprovisioned account.

Empty list versus delayed list

Record whether the list is completely empty, appears briefly and disappears, or shows a resource that fails only when opened. A truly unconfigured account points to provisioning. A list that changes between the installed and browser clients can indicate a local client or session issue. A listed resource that will not launch requires the connection and service checks below rather than an assignment request alone.

When a session will not connect or keeps disconnecting

Windows 365 Cloud PCs

Open the Cloud PC’s available actions and choose Inspect connection when it is present. Use the resulting information when deciding whether the issue is local connectivity, the Cloud PC, or an organization policy. If the option is missing, the administrator may need to perform the service-side investigation.

Microsoft Dev Box

For a Dev Box, use Troubleshoot & repair when that action is available. The tool is service-specific; do not expect the same control to appear for every resource type.

Azure Virtual Desktop

Check the estimated connection round-trip time from your location. A high or unstable round-trip time can explain sluggish input, delayed screen updates, or disconnects even when the client itself opens normally. Record the estimate, your location or network, and the time of day for the administrator.

Remote Desktop Services and other hosted resources

Use the internet, update, and browser comparison first. Hosted services can impose their own gateway, policy, licensing, and device requirements, so an administrator must check the service configuration when the failure persists.

What to do if the connection remains unreliable

Note whether the failure happens on one network or everywhere, whether the browser client behaves the same way, and whether other users are affected. Persistent connection failures and performance problems should be escalated with those observations rather than treated as an automatic reason to reset the app.

Separate performance from availability

If a session opens but feels slow, record delayed typing, frozen screen updates, audio or video symptoms, and disconnect frequency separately. A session that never starts is an availability problem; a session that starts and becomes sluggish may relate to round-trip time, network conditions, service load, or policy. This distinction prevents an administrator from investigating the wrong layer.

When Windows App will not open or is broken locally

Repair the Windows installation first

On Windows, open Settings > Apps, locate Windows App, open its Advanced options, and choose Repair if the button is provided. Repair attempts to correct the installation without removing all local app data. Microsoft notes that not every app exposes Repair or Reset controls; if you do not see them, use the available reinstall guidance instead. The general procedure is documented in Microsoft’s Windows app repair instructions.

Use Reset only after Repair

If Repair does not change the behavior, return to the same Advanced options page and consider Reset. Reset can remove locally stored app state, so you may need to sign in again and restore local preferences. It is a local recovery step, not a remedy for a missing account assignment or a service outage.

Reinstall when the local package is damaged

If Windows App still will not launch, uninstall and reinstall it using the supported package source for your organization and platform. Before doing so, record the exact error, check whether the browser client works, and confirm that you know the account and sign-in method. If the organization manages the installation, ask the administrator to provide the approved package rather than installing an unapproved copy.

Before you reset or reinstall

  • Save the exact error message or a screenshot that does not expose passwords or security codes.
  • Confirm that the problem is local by testing the browser client.
  • Make sure you know which organization account and authentication method you need.
  • Check whether other users or devices can reach the same resource.
  • Expect to sign in again after a reset or reinstall.

These precautions reduce the chance of losing useful diagnostic information or mistaking a service-side problem for a damaged package.

macOS and iOS/iPadOS

On macOS, follow Microsoft’s uninstall guidance and then install the current supported client. On iPhone or iPad, remove Windows App and reinstall it from the approved app source. The steps and available diagnostics differ from Windows, so do not apply Windows Settings instructions to those platforms.

Platform-specific limitations that can look like failures

Some behavior is a documented limitation rather than a broken account or installation. Microsoft’s known-issues page changes as clients and services change; check it for your platform before adopting a workaround.

Windows

  • User data cannot be reset from Windows App’s own interface; use Windows Settings instead.
  • Remote PC connections to Windows Server 2019 and later do not support camera and microphone redirection in the limitation described by Microsoft.
  • Other service-connection restrictions can apply depending on the resource type.

macOS

  • Keyboard shortcuts can behave differently with non-English or mismatched keyboard layouts.
  • Update behavior and media-device support have platform-specific conditions documented by Microsoft.

iOS and iPadOS

  • Camera use may require stopping and restarting camera access or switching cameras.
  • Device-size and camera-preview constraints can affect what you see without preventing the remote session itself.

Android and Chrome OS

Supported external identity sign-in options are constrained by the platform and the current Windows App implementation. If an organization account works on another platform but not on Android or Chrome OS, check the current limitation entry before changing account settings.

Web browsers

  • Safari’s web client does not support keyboard shortcuts.
  • Using the web client on phones or tablets can produce unexpected behavior; a native mobile app is a separate option.
  • Browser, device, and service combinations can limit features even when sign-in succeeds.

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 and installation-specific problems

Microsoft maintains a special installation and connectivity section for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 clients, including computers without Microsoft Store. Framework dependencies and their versions can change, so use the current instructions in Microsoft’s basic Windows App troubleshooting article rather than copying an old dependency version from another guide.

The same documentation describes a crash scenario associated with urlmon.dll. Install the latest Windows Updates before attempting more disruptive recovery. If the crash continues, provide the administrator with the crash symptom, Windows edition, update status, and whether the browser client works.

Check remote-PC eligibility

If you are connecting directly to a personal or office PC rather than a hosted Cloud PC or virtual desktop, Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guidance requires the remote host PC to run Windows Pro. The device used to connect can run Windows Home or Pro, or another supported operating system. This host-edition rule applies to the direct remote-PC scenario; Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services have their own service requirements. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guide for that scenario.

Use Windows-level troubleshooters only for Windows-level symptoms

If Windows itself reports an installation, networking, or system-component problem, Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooters can provide general diagnostics. They do not replace administrator checks for resource provisioning, account permissions, or hosted-service configuration.

For a severely damaged Windows installation, review Windows recovery options in order from least disruptive to most disruptive. Back up important data and understand the data-loss consequences before using a reset or other recovery operation. Do not use a full Windows reset merely because a remote resource has not been assigned.

What to include when escalating

Contact the organization administrator when sign-in remains blocked, resources are missing, connections repeatedly fail, performance is poor, or the client remains broken after the platform-appropriate repair steps. Include:

  • The client platform and operating-system edition.
  • The resource type: Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, or direct remote PC.
  • The exact error message and the time it occurred.
  • Whether Windows App is updated and whether Repair, Reset, or reinstall was attempted.
  • Whether the browser client works differently.
  • Your network context and, for Azure Virtual Desktop, the estimated round-trip time.
  • Whether the issue affects one account, one device, one network, or multiple users.

This information lets the administrator distinguish identity, provisioning, client, network, and service faults without asking you to repeat unrelated recovery steps. Microsoft’s basic troubleshooting guidance concludes that you should contact the administrator if Windows App still does not work correctly.

Verify the result after a fix

After repairing, resetting, reinstalling, or changing a network, sign in again and open the same resource that failed. Confirm both launch and ordinary use: keyboard input, display updates, audio or camera functions that you actually need, and whether the session remains connected for a reasonable period. If the original symptom returns, record exactly when it returns instead of repeating the same recovery step.

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Stop changing local settings when the error explicitly says resources are not configured, when another device shows the same account failure, when the service diagnostic reports a remote-side fault, or when repeated resets and reinstalls make no difference. At that point, the remaining fix is normally an administrator action, a service-side repair, or a documented platform limitation—not another copy of the client.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Windows App the same as a normal Windows program?

No. Windows App is Microsoft’s remote-access client. It connects to services such as Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services, so an account, resource assignment, network path, and service policy can all affect it.

What does “no resources configured” mean?

It normally means the administrator has not assigned a Cloud PC, desktop, or app to that account. Check internet access, update the client, and try the browser once, then ask the administrator to verify provisioning. Reinstalling the app cannot create an assignment.

Should I repair, reset, or reinstall Windows App?

Use Repair first when Windows provides it under Settings > Apps > Windows App > Advanced options. Consider Reset only if Repair fails because Reset can remove local app state. Reinstall when the package remains damaged, using the organization-approved source.

Why does the browser client work when the installed app does not?

That comparison makes an account or hosted-service failure less likely and points toward the local installation, local state, or a platform-specific limitation. Browser support is not identical, however, so check the documented browser and service restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Windows App slow or frequently disconnecting?

Check your network, update Windows App, compare with the browser client, and use the service diagnostic available for the resource. For Azure Virtual Desktop, record the estimated connection round-trip time. Persistent performance problems should go to the administrator with the timing and network details.

Can I use a Windows Home PC to connect to a remote PC?

Microsoft’s direct Remote Desktop guidance requires the remote host PC to run Windows Pro. The connecting device can run Windows Home or Pro, or another supported operating system. Hosted services have separate requirements.

Why do camera or microphone features fail even though the session works?

The behavior may be a platform or service limitation. For example, Microsoft documents that Remote PC connections to Windows Server 2019 and later do not support camera and microphone redirection in the described scenario. Check the current known-issues page for your platform.

When should I contact my administrator?

Escalate when sign-in remains blocked, resources are missing, connections repeatedly fail, performance is poor, or repair and reinstall do not help. Provide the platform, resource type, exact error, update status, browser comparison, network context, and timing. Never send a password or one-time code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose the layer first: account, provisioning, connection, local client, or platform limitation. Check internet access, update Windows App, compare the browser client, and use the diagnostic specific to Windows 365, Dev Box, or Azure Virtual Desktop. Repair a locally broken Windows installation before resetting or reinstalling, and involve the administrator whenever the account, assignment, hosted service, or persistent performance is involved.
