The fastest way to fix an Office update failure is to identify the exact error text or code, then match it to the correct operating system and Office installation. A Windows repair procedure is not a Mac AutoUpdate fix, and a personally managed computer may allow actions that a work or school computer blocks. Record the message, check Microsoft’s current known-issue guidance, and use the error-specific procedure for your case rather than applying one “universal” repair.
Start by narrowing down the failure
“Office won’t update” describes several different problems: an update can fail inside a Windows installation, Microsoft AutoUpdate can fail to launch on a Mac, an organization can prevent users from installing updates, or a temporary Microsoft service issue can affect many customers. The first few minutes spent identifying the case prevent you from running the wrong repair.

Record the complete error
Copy the full wording and every number shown in the Office app, installer, notification, or log. “Something went wrong…” followed by 30088-26 is materially different from a generic “Update failed” message. If the message disappears, take a screenshot or write it down before dismissing it.

Do not infer the platform from the product name. Microsoft 365 runs on both Windows and Mac, but the updater and its troubleshooting instructions are not interchangeable.

Check Microsoft’s current issue information before changing anything
Office problems can be caused by a newly released build or a service incident rather than by your installation. Review Microsoft’s Fixes or workarounds for recent Office issues page and search it for your error text, code, Office app, and operating system. The list changes over time; a result current in July 2026 should be treated as a live reference, not a permanent catalog of every error.
If the page lists your symptom, follow its stated workaround and note whether Microsoft says a fix is being rolled out. Avoid repeatedly repairing or reinstalling Office while a known issue is being addressed, because those actions may not help and can make diagnosis harder.
Administrators should also check Service health in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Service health can distinguish a tenant-wide or service-side incident from a problem limited to one computer. A regular user may not have access to that dashboard; ask the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator to check it.

Windows: troubleshoot error 30088-26
Microsoft documents error 30088-26 for Office updates on Windows. The message commonly begins “Something went wrong…”. Microsoft’s first listed solution is to repair Office, and its instructions apply the repair to the entire Office suite even when only one application appears affected. This procedure is specific to that Windows error; do not assume it is the correct fix for another code.

Repair Office from Windows settings
- Save open documents and close Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Office applications.
- Open Settings and go to Apps > Installed apps (the label may appear as Apps & features on an older Windows release).
- Find your Microsoft 365 or Office installation, open its menu, and choose Modify or Advanced options, depending on the Windows version.
- Choose the Office repair option presented by Windows and follow the on-screen instructions. The operation targets the suite, not just the app in which you noticed the error.
- Restart Windows if prompted, open an Office app, and try the update again from the app’s account or update controls.
If the installed-app entry does not expose a repair command, use the traditional path: open Control Panel, select Programs > Programs and Features, select Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Change, and follow the repair wizard. The exact buttons can differ by Office edition and Windows build, so read each screen rather than selecting a different product or removing Office by mistake.
What to do if repair does not resolve 30088-26
- Confirm that you are following Microsoft’s instructions for Windows error 30088-26, not a similarly numbered code. A single digit can lead to a different article and remedy.
- Return to the recent-issues page and check whether a current build or service incident is listed.
- Record whether the repair completed, whether the update reached a particular percentage, and the new message or code. That information is more useful than repeatedly starting the same repair.
- If the computer belongs to an employer or school, stop before attempting administrative changes and contact the help desk. Policy may be the reason the update cannot proceed.
Microsoft’s published guidance establishes repair as the first step for this code; it does not establish repair as a universal solution for all Office update failures.
Mac: troubleshoot Microsoft AutoUpdate errors
On macOS, Office updates are handled by Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU). Microsoft Support explains: “An error message upon attempting to run Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) may be due to a missing helper file or incorrectly set permissions.” The statement appears in Microsoft Support’s Troubleshoot Microsoft AutoUpdate in Microsoft 365 and Office for Mac guidance.

- Close Office applications, including any that may be running in the background.
- Open Microsoft’s current AutoUpdate troubleshooting article and use its link to download the latest Microsoft AutoUpdate version.
- Run the downloaded installer and approve macOS prompts for your administrator password or software installation when requested.
- After installation, launch an Office app and check for updates again. If macOS asks for permission to access files or install a helper component, read the prompt and allow it only if it is the Microsoft updater you intended to install.
Updating MAU addresses the missing-helper-file or permission scenario described by Microsoft. It is not a Windows Office repair procedure, and it should not be presented as the answer to an unrelated Mac error code without checking that code’s instructions.

If macOS permissions or a helper file are the problem
A failed MAU launch can indicate that a required helper file is absent or that its permissions are incorrect. The supported first action is still to install the latest AutoUpdate version using Microsoft’s article. If the installer reports that you are not allowed to replace a component, or if the Mac is managed by an organization, do not try to bypass the restriction with random permission changes. Send the exact message to the administrator instead.
Work and school computers: determine who controls updates
Organizations can deploy Microsoft 365 updates centrally, defer them to a selected channel, or restrict who may install software. Microsoft’s work-or-school guidance explains that update deployment and installation permissions may be managed by the organization. An update that is unavailable, repeatedly rolled back, or blocked by a policy may therefore be functioning as configured rather than failing on your computer.
Ask the help desk the right questions
- Is this Office build being pushed centrally, and if so, when is the scheduled deployment?
- Is the update intentionally deferred or restricted for a testing, compliance, or compatibility reason?
- Do users have permission to run Office repair or install the latest AutoUpdate component?
- Is Microsoft 365 Service health showing an incident affecting the tenant?
Provide the help desk with the exact code, a screenshot, your Office edition and build, Windows or macOS version, device name or asset number if required by the organization, and the time of the failure. State whether the device is on the organization’s network or connected through a remote access service if that is relevant to its policies.
Older desktop setup problems: checks that still apply in that context
Microsoft’s older Microsoft 365 desktop-setup troubleshooting material lists several possible causes: loss of internet connectivity, an interrupted installation, insufficient disk space, an incompatible operating system, and a required update that failed. These checks are useful when you are working through that setup workflow or a comparable installation failure, but the older material should not be treated as the current universal Office-update procedure.

Connection loss or an interrupted installation
Verify that the computer can reach the internet and that the connection remains available for the entire setup or update attempt. If the computer slept, changed networks, or lost connectivity during installation, restart the process from the supported Office update or setup screen rather than launching several installers at once. Record whether the same stage fails again.
Insufficient storage
Check available disk space on the system volume, not only on an external drive. A setup process may need temporary space in addition to the final Office files. If storage is low, remove or move data using your normal backup process, then retry the supported update. Do not delete unknown folders inside the Office or system directories to make room.
Unsupported operating system
Confirm that your Windows or macOS version is supported by the Office edition you are installing. An operating-system mismatch requires an appropriate supported platform or Office version; repairing the same incompatible installation will not change that requirement.

If setup reports that a prerequisite or required update failed, preserve that exact message and code. A prerequisite failure can have its own Microsoft article and may require a different sequence from the main Office update. Do not substitute the 30088-26 repair steps unless Microsoft’s instructions explicitly associate them with your code.

Prepare an escalation packet when the error persists
When the official, error-specific step does not work, escalation is more effective if the next person can reproduce the case. Include:
- The complete error text and numeric code, copied exactly.
- Operating system and version, Office edition, affected app, build, and update channel when available.
- Whether the device is personally managed or controlled by work or school IT.
- The date and time of the failure, the step that triggered it, and whether the failure occurs on every attempt.
- What you tried, including whether Windows repair completed or the latest MAU installer ran successfully.

Because Microsoft’s public guidance does not provide a complete matrix for every Office version, channel, and error code, the code-specific article is the authority for cases beyond the documented Windows 30088-26 and Mac AutoUpdate scenarios.
Common mistakes that prolong an Office update failure
- Using a Windows fix on a Mac: Microsoft AutoUpdate has its own helper files and permissions, so the platform-specific article matters.
- Repairing before recording the code: The original message may disappear, leaving support without the key identifier.
- Repeating a known-bad step: If Microsoft lists an active issue, repeated local repairs may not change the result.
- Ignoring device management: A policy-controlled update can be unavailable by design; an administrator must confirm the deployment state.
