The fastest way to fix a Framework Laptop 12 setup problem is to identify the exact generation and the stage at which it fails. The Intel Core Series 3 and 13th Gen Intel models use different BIOS files and driver bundles. A DIY machine may also be in shipping mode, Windows setup may need a temporary Wi-Fi package before the full driver bundle is installed, and Linux firmware updates follow a different path. Use the matching branch below instead of mixing downloads or instructions between generations.
Start by identifying the laptop and the failure stage
Check the order, system label, or firmware information to determine whether the computer is the Framework Laptop 12 Intel Core Series 3 or the Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel. Also record whether it is the DIY Edition or a Pre-built system. The DIY Edition requires memory and storage installation plus operating-system setup; a Pre-built unit follows its own quick-start sequence.

Next, classify the symptom. The remedy depends on whether the laptop does not appear to power on, Windows setup has no wireless network, hardware is missing after installation, a BIOS update fails, or a Linux installation has compatibility problems. Write down the operating system, what you did immediately before the symptom appeared, and whether the problem occurs before the desktop loads or only after login.

Prepare before you troubleshoot
Gather the items that correspond to the failure stage: the laptop’s exact model and edition, a USB-C power supply, a USB flash drive, and, for an offline Windows setup, another computer with internet access. The USB drive is used to create Windows installation media and can also carry both the installation-time Wi-Fi package and the complete Framework Driver Bundle. It is a setup aid, not a universal repair device.
- Keep the Framework download page for the correct generation open while checking versions.
- Use the package named Wi-Fi Driver for use during Windows Installation only for Windows OOBE; it is not a replacement for the full bundle.
- Download the complete Driver Bundle in advance when the target laptop may have no network connection after installation.
- Do not purchase a screwdriver automatically: Framework identifies the Framework Screwdriver as included with the DIY laptop.
- Only order additional memory after confirming the generation, SO-DIMM type, supported speed, capacity limit, and a genuine need for the upgrade.
No fixed purchase price is established for a USB drive or optional memory, so treat those as conditional supplies rather than mandatory Framework accessories. The DIY guide’s 10–20 minute assembly estimate covers assembly only; Windows or Linux installation takes additional time.
If a newly assembled DIY laptop seems dead
Connect USB-C power once to leave shipping mode
Framework ships the laptop in shipping mode, which disables the battery until the first USB-C power connection. Connect a suitable USB-C power supply, then try the power button again. A machine that has never received that first connection can appear completely unresponsive even though no component is faulty.

Allow time for memory training
After installing a SO-DIMM, the first start can take several minutes while the firmware performs memory training. The display may remain inactive longer than during a normal boot. Leave the laptop connected to AC power and allow that documented interval to pass before treating the delay as a failed startup. Avoid repeatedly interrupting the process.
Recheck the physical installation
Power off, disconnect the USB-C supply, and inspect that the memory module is fully seated and its retaining arms are engaged. Confirm that storage and other parts required by the DIY build are installed according to the model-specific quick-start guide. If the system still shows no signs of power after leaving shipping mode and allowing memory training, stop swapping parts at random; use Framework’s support and repair resources to identify the failed component.
Framework estimates DIY assembly at approximately 10–20 minutes. That is a guide estimate, not a guaranteed completion time, and operating-system installation is a separate task.

Prepare the Windows installation USB correctly
Use one USB drive for installation and drivers
Framework’s Windows procedure uses a USB flash drive to create Windows installation media. The same drive can hold the Wi-Fi Driver for use during Windows Installation and, if necessary, the full Framework Driver Bundle. A second computer with internet access is useful when the Laptop 12 cannot connect during setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- On another Windows computer, create the official Windows installation USB using Microsoft’s current media-creation process.
- Download the Laptop 12 Wi-Fi package specified for the Windows out-of-box experience (OOBE), choosing the page for your exact generation.
- Copy that package to the installation USB in the location described by Framework’s Laptop 12 Windows installation guide. Keep the files unmodified.
- Download the matching Framework Driver Bundle as well if you expect the target laptop to be offline after installation, and copy it to the USB.
- Safely eject the drive, connect it to the Laptop 12, and boot from the USB using the boot-selection method in the setup guide.
The temporary Wi-Fi package and the complete Driver Bundle serve different purposes. The first gets wireless networking available during OOBE; the second installs the collection of hardware drivers needed for normal feature support after Windows is running.
USB preparation pitfalls
Keep the downloaded packages in the folder arrangement required by Framework’s guide. If OOBE cannot see a driver, check that the USB is readable and that the files were not accidentally placed inside an extra nested folder. Recopy the files from the download rather than renaming individual components. If the drive contains several generations’ packages, use the clearly labeled exact-generation files and remove ambiguity before starting.
Fix no Wi-Fi during Windows OOBE
Load the OOBE Wi-Fi package
A fresh Windows installation may stop at the network step because its built-in driver set does not yet support the Laptop 12’s wireless hardware. Insert the prepared installation USB and use the OOBE option to browse for or load a driver, following Framework’s exact on-screen path for the Laptop 12. Select the Wi-Fi package intended for installation-time use, not an unrelated driver from another generation.
Once the wireless adapter appears, connect to the network and continue setup. If the package does not load, verify that the USB is readable, the files were copied without being nested in an unexpected folder, and the download matches both the Laptop 12 generation and the Windows installation you are using.
When the laptop remains offline
Complete as much setup as Windows allows, then use another computer to obtain the correct Driver Bundle. Transfer it on the USB drive, copy it locally on the Laptop 12, and run the bundle. Restart when prompted. After networking works, run Windows Update so that Windows can obtain subsequent operating-system and device updates.

Install the complete Windows Driver Bundle after setup
Run the bundle from the exact-generation page
Framework describes its Driver Bundle as automatically installing the drivers required to use the Framework Laptop. On a fresh installation, this is important because Windows may not include support for every newly released component. Download only from the BIOS and driver page that names your generation, then run the bundle with the laptop connected to AC power.
- Open the downloaded bundle from local storage rather than launching it directly from a removable drive.
- Allow the installer to make system changes when Windows requests administrator approval.
- Let every listed package finish; do not close the installer because the screen appears unchanged during one driver stage.
- Restart when the bundle requests it, even if Windows appears usable before the reboot.
- After restarting, open Device Manager and check for warning icons, then run Windows Update with an active network connection.
If devices or features are still missing
- Confirm the bundle is for Intel Core Series 3 or 13th Gen Intel as appropriate; a different generation’s package is not a substitute.
- Restart once more after the bundle completes, because some devices are enumerated only during boot.
- Check Device Manager for the device name and error code. Record those details before contacting support.
- Do not use a random third-party driver pack as a first response; it can obscure which Framework package is missing.
If a device remains unidentified after the matching bundle, Windows Update, and a restart, the symptom may require a model-specific support or repair procedure rather than another generic driver download.
BIOS and firmware update troubleshooting
Basic precautions for every generation
Open the official BIOS page for the exact Laptop 12 generation and follow the operating-system-specific procedure shown there. Keep the AC adapter connected throughout the update, close other applications, and do not press the power button or disconnect power while firmware is being written. Firmware releases and update steps can change, so do not infer the Series 3 procedure from the 13th Gen instructions.

13th Gen Intel Windows update sequence
The 13th Gen page documented a staged Windows process for the September 2026 release: run the 3.08 Step 1 update, reboot, and then run the 3.09 Step 2 update. The page listed BIOS 3.09 and Driver Bundle v1.03 on September 8, 2026. Treat those numbers as a dated example of the page’s required sequence; check the current page before starting because a later release may replace it.
Linux updates through fwupd and LVFS
For Linux, Framework directs users to the firmware updater supplied through fwupd and the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS), using the commands and refresh process on the matching BIOS page. If LVFS does not offer an update while the battery reports 100%, Framework documents a specific retry: discharge the battery to 95%, reconnect AC power, refresh the firmware metadata, and check again. This battery-at-100% limitation and retry sequence is documented for the 13th Gen instructions; do not assume it applies identically to Series 3.
When an update is not offered
- Verify that the laptop model and operating system selected on the Framework page are correct.
- Confirm AC power is connected and the firmware service has been refreshed as instructed.
- Check the currently installed BIOS version before attempting an older package.
- Do not interrupt an update that has already begun. If the process reports an error, preserve the exact message and contact Framework Support rather than repeatedly forcing the flash.
Linux installation and compatibility checks
Begin with the Laptop 12-specific guide
Framework maintains a Laptop 12 Linux installation guide, compatibility chart, and distribution-specific guides. Start there instead of applying instructions written for another Framework model. The compatibility material is intended to provide distro, kernel, and known-issue guidance, but the appropriate combination depends on the distribution and release you choose.

- Choose the Linux distribution and release you intend to install.
- Open the Laptop 12 guide for that distribution and read its installation prerequisites before creating media.
- Check the compatibility chart for the current distro and kernel notes.
- Install using the guide’s recommended media and boot settings.
- After the first boot, apply the guide’s firmware-updater instructions and review any listed known issues before changing kernels or hardware.
Because compatibility charts and kernel support change, do not claim that an unlisted distro or kernel is validated merely because Linux boots. If a device is missing, compare the installed kernel and firmware versions with the current Framework guide, then use the distribution’s documented package tools and Framework Support for unresolved hardware symptoms.
Linux-specific decision points
Separate an installation problem from a firmware problem. If the installer cannot boot, follow the distribution guide’s media and boot instructions first. If Linux installs but a device is absent, record the distro release, running kernel, BIOS version, and the device symptom before changing packages. If fwupd or LVFS does not list firmware, use the matching Framework BIOS page’s refresh process and check the battery condition; do not substitute Windows flashing steps for Linux instructions.
Choose the correct path for DIY and Pre-built editions
DIY Edition
DIY owners must account for physical assembly, shipping mode, memory training, storage installation, and operating-system media. The included Framework Screwdriver is identified by Framework as part of the DIY laptop package, so purchasing another screwdriver is not a prerequisite. Memory upgrades are conditional: confirm the generation’s supported module type and capacity before ordering anything.
Pre-built Edition
A Pre-built laptop arrives with its hardware assembled and follows a separate quick-start path. Do not apply DIY assembly steps simply because a driver problem occurs. Start with the Pre-built setup instructions, then use the generation-specific Windows or Linux driver and firmware pages if the operating system needs repair.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Framework
Escalate when the laptop remains without power after the documented shipping-mode and memory-training checks, a correctly matched driver bundle leaves a device unusable, or a firmware process reports an error. Keep the generation, DIY or Pre-built status, operating system and version, BIOS version, driver-bundle version, exact error text, and the steps already attempted. Framework’s setup page links to support resources and repair guides; use those channels for component identification instead of ordering replacement parts based only on a symptom.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Framework Laptop 12 driver bundle should I download?
First identify whether the laptop is the Intel Core Series 3 or 13th Gen Intel model. Framework publishes separate BIOS and driver pages. The September 2026 listings showed Driver Bundle v1.00 for Series 3 and v1.03 for 13th Gen, but always use the current page for the matching generation.
Why is there no Wi-Fi option during Windows setup?
A fresh Windows installation may lack the wireless driver. Put Framework’s Wi-Fi Driver for use during Windows Installation on the installation USB and load it through the OOBE driver option. After reaching the desktop, run the full Driver Bundle and restart.
How long should the first DIY boot take?
After a SO-DIMM installation, memory training can keep the display inactive for several minutes. Leave USB-C power connected and wait through that interval before treating the startup as failed. Also connect USB-C power once to exit shipping mode.
Can I use the 13th Gen BIOS instructions on the Core Series 3 laptop?
No. Framework maintains generation-specific firmware pages. The 13th Gen page documented a staged 3.08 Step 1 and 3.09 Step 2 process for a September 2026 release; do not apply that sequence to Series 3 unless its own current page explicitly says so.
What should I do if Linux does not offer a firmware update?
Use the Laptop 12 BIOS page for your generation and the fwupd/LVFS process listed there. For the documented 13th Gen limitation, a battery reading of 100% can prevent an update from appearing; discharge to 95%, reconnect AC, refresh firmware metadata, and check again. Do not assume the same limitation applies to Series 3.
Is extra memory required for a DIY Framework Laptop 12?
Memory is a configuration requirement for a DIY build, but the supported limit depends on the generation: the guide states up to 64 GB DDR5-6400 for Intel Core Series 3 and up to 48 GB DDR5-5200 for 13th Gen Intel. Confirm the exact module and capacity before ordering.
Do I need to buy the Framework Screwdriver?
No. Framework identifies the Framework Screwdriver as included with the DIY laptop. A USB flash drive may still be needed for Windows installation media or offline driver transfer.
