To find out why checkout is failing, match the affected checkout step and time to application errors, request traces, payment-provider events, and uptime checks. A customer-facing symptom alone cannot tell you whether the fault is in your checkout code, an API, a database, a payment provider, or a third-party script.
Start by defining the failure
Before changing code or payment settings, establish what failed and when. Record the checkout step, approximate time and timezone, browser or app, release, payment method, and any message the customer saw. Check whether the issue affects every customer or only a subset—for example, one browser, payment method, region, or recent release.

Keep diagnostic data focused. Do not put card data, secrets, or unnecessary personal information into logs or monitoring events. Session and user context can help connect an error to a failing checkout, but collect only what your team needs and is permitted to retain.
Check whether the checkout path is reachable
Review uptime checks for the checkout endpoint and the adjacent services that must work for an order to complete. A healthy homepage check does not prove that a checkout API or payment callback is working. Compare the monitor’s history with the incident time, and look at deployments and configuration changes made around then.

Uptime monitoring answers whether a configured endpoint responds according to a check; it does not, by itself, explain why a customer’s request failed. For example, Sentry’s February 11, 2025 product article described HTTP checks every 60 seconds and geographically distributed checks. Those are vendor-described capabilities at publication, not an industry standard; verify current intervals, regions, timeouts, and plan limits before relying on them. See Sentry’s uptime monitoring description.
Use errors and traces to locate the failing component
Search application errors around the reported time. Group them by release, route, and checkout step, then inspect stack traces and request context for the failing operation. A trace that follows a checkout request across the browser, application, database, and external calls can help show where an error begins or latency accumulates.

- Please note, this is a barebone only. A system memory, a storage drive and an operating system are needed to complete this system

For example, a failure may originate in checkout code, a slow database query, an API call, or a third-party script. The relevant clue is where the request first errors or slows—not simply the final error a customer sees. Sentry describes ecommerce monitoring features including stack traces, breadcrumbs, device and user context, session replay, and tracing across APIs, databases, and third-party scripts on its ecommerce monitoring page. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent product comparison.

Check payment-provider events and webhook delivery
Inspect the failed Stripe delivery
If Stripe webhook delivery is involved, open the endpoint’s Failed tab, select the event, and inspect the delivery attempt, HTTP status code, and response. Use that response to identify the failure condition rather than treating every failed delivery as the same problem. Stripe says delivery failures are retried several times, but retries do not establish that your application eventually processed the event correctly. Follow the event through your own handling as well. See Stripe’s webhook delivery troubleshooting guidance.

Respond promptly to webhook timeouts
Stripe defines a timed-out webhook as one where it established a connection to your server but the server took too long to respond. A common design correction is to acknowledge receipt with a 2xx response promptly, then move longer work into asynchronous processing. Avoid waiting to finish lengthy work before responding. Check server logs and resource use—including CPU, memory, and disk capacity—as part of the investigation. Stripe’s steps are in its webhook timeout guidance.

- Repeat the same checkout step using the affected browser or payment method where practical, and confirm that the order can complete.
- Check that the related provider event is delivered and handled by your application.
- Confirm that errors stop recurring and trace latency returns to its expected range for the affected route.
- Check that the relevant uptime monitor is healthy, not just the homepage monitor.
- Record the incident time, release or configuration change, symptoms, and evidence so a recurrence can be compared against the same signals.

- Portable 100M/1G Network TAP Appliance for remote capture of data traffic
- Integrated with a Raspberry Pi 4 module (8GB RAM and 64GB Micro SD Card)
- Can be used as a standalone 100M/1G network TAP with the external monitor port
- Dual DC power inputs for enhancing overall system availability
- Error coverage: whether browser-side and backend errors are captured for the frameworks you use.
- Trace continuity: whether a checkout request can be followed into database operations and third-party calls.
- Useful, appropriate context: whether teams can identify affected sessions without collecting more personal data than necessary.
- Uptime configuration: check interval, timeout, geographic locations, and alert controls for the endpoints that matter.
- Operational fit: integrations with your frameworks and incident workflow, plus retention, access controls, and total cost.
Error monitoring and uptime checks complement each other: one provides application and request context, while the other reports endpoint availability. Sentry is one vendor example covering checkout error tracking and URL monitoring; its product pages do not establish a neutral ranking against alternatives. Check current product documentation and plan details before making a selection.
