Fix a broken AI-generated scene by locating the first layer where it fails: the generated source asset, the exported file, the engine importer, or the scene setup. Preserve the original export, inspect it in a DCC application or neutral viewer, then compare that result with the game engine. A white model usually points to material or texture connections; seams and cracks point to UVs, maps, or format-specific behavior; incorrect size or rotation points to units, scale, or axis conversion. Do not regenerate the mesh until you know the defect is in the generated asset rather than in the transfer pipeline.
Start by isolating the failure layer
An imported scene can look wrong even when the mesh itself is sound. Export settings, texture paths, material mapping, coordinate systems, importer defaults, and scene scale can each change the result. Conversely, a mesh with broken topology, missing UVs, or defective textures will remain broken in every application.

Use this four-layer model:
- Source asset: geometry, normals, UVs, textures, material slots, and generated maps.
- Export file: the GLB, FBX, or other file, including embedded or referenced textures.
- Engine import: file-version support, importer scale, axis conversion, material creation, and texture interpretation.
- Scene setup: actor transform, lighting, shader parameters, collision, LOD selection, and project-specific overrides.
Open the exported file before changing engine settings. If the defect is visible in the DCC application or neutral viewer, repair or regenerate the asset. If it appears only after import, concentrate on compatibility, paths, importer options, and material setup. This comparison is a diagnostic inference from the different stages, not evidence of a universal failure rate for AI-generated assets.

Record these details before editing:
- Generator name and asset or model identifier.
- Export format and whether textures are embedded or stored beside the file.
- DCC application and version used for inspection or editing.
- Game engine name and exact version.
- Importer settings, including scale, axis conversion, material creation, normal handling, and LOD or collision options.
- A screenshot of the failure and the steps that reproduce it.
Meshy’s texture-support guidance specifically asks for the model ID, export format, target tool and version, and a screenshot when escalating an issue. Those details are useful even when you are diagnosing the asset yourself because they make format- and version-specific differences visible.
Diagnose by the visible symptom
| What you see | First checks | Most likely next action |
|---|---|---|
| White, gray, or flat-shaded model | Check material slots, base-color files, and links for normal, roughness, and metallic maps. | Reconnect available maps in the target material. In Unreal, inspect which maps imported and connect unlinked textures manually. |
| Seams, cracks, stretched areas, or doubled textures | Inspect UV overlap and wrapping, texture maps, and whether the problem changes between GLB and FBX. | Compare formats, inspect UVs and maps, and determine whether the defect follows the texture or appears only in one engine. Widespread defects often justify re-baking or regenerating the texture. |
| Cracks on a GLB in Unreal | Confirm that the file is a Meshy GLB and check the exact Unreal version. | For the documented Unreal Engine 5.5.4 and 5.6.0 case, test disabling mipmaps on the affected texture. |
| Blurry texture after a Meshy Unreal-plugin import | Select the texture in the Content Browser and see whether it sharpens after loading. | Test the documented editor command r.Streaming.FullyLoadUsedTextures 1 in the target project. |
| Invisible, tiny, or enormous model | Compare source and target units and the importer scale. | Correct the scale assumption and re-import a copy. Unreal documents one Unreal Unit as one centimeter. |
| Model is rotated or lying on its side | Check the exporter’s up axis and the engine’s conversion setting. | Apply the appropriate Y-up/Z-up conversion for that exporter and engine combination. |
| Gaps, dark patches, or see-through faces | Inspect the original mesh and face orientation or normals; establish whether the defect exists before import. | Repair geometry or normals in the DCC application when appropriate, re-export, and compare again. |
| Collision is missing or inaccurate | Inspect collision geometry and display it in the engine’s mesh editor. | Provide or correct custom collision, then verify it in the editor rather than judging only from the visible mesh. |
Inspect the source asset before changing engine settings
Check geometry and normals
View the exported file in the same DCC application used for repair, or in a neutral viewer that displays geometry, materials, and UVs. Orbit around the model and look for holes, inverted faces, non-manifold areas, duplicated surfaces, and abrupt shading changes. If a gap or dark patch is already present there, an importer setting cannot create a reliable fix; repair the source mesh or regenerate the affected asset.
Normal and topology repairs depend on the DCC application and its version. Current official step-by-step procedures for the particular Blender or Unity repairs are not established here, so use the documentation for the application you actually have instead of applying a guessed menu path. After a repair, export a new copy and confirm that the same defect has disappeared before proceeding to engine testing.

Inspect UVs and maps
Look for overlapping UV islands, islands outside the intended 0–1 range, extreme stretching, and seams crossing highly visible surfaces. Then open each image map and confirm that it contains the expected content. A base-color image in the wrong color space, a normal map treated as color data, or a roughness map assigned to the wrong channel can make a sound mesh appear damaged.
Meshy’s cross-tool troubleshooting recommends checking that base color, normal, roughness, and metallic maps exist and are linked. A small, isolated overlap may be repaired locally. If seams or misalignment cover much of the model, re-baking or regenerating the texture is usually more efficient than patching many islands individually.
Repair white or untextured imports
Confirm that a material is assigned
A white model can mean that no material was assigned, that the imported material points to missing files, or that the engine created a material without connecting its textures. Check the mesh’s material slots first, then inspect the material instance or shader graph. Reconnect the available base-color, normal, roughness, and metallic images to the intended inputs.

Do not equate mesh success with material success
Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.8 static-mesh documentation warns that importing a mesh does not guarantee complete material transfer. Its documented behavior is that Color and Normal are automatically connected when a supported material is used; Specular maps may be imported but not connected, while other maps may not be imported at all. Epic’s guidance is to inspect the resulting materials, connect unconnected maps, and check which maps did not import.
Tripo’s workflow guidance likewise recommends checking texture paths and material binding when a model appears white or gray, and manually connecting Normal, Roughness, and Metallic channels when the engine has not detected them. It presents GLB as useful when embedding textures is important and FBX as a common game-engine workflow. These are vendor recommendations, not a promise that one format will solve every asset.
Investigate seams and texture cracks
Determine whether the crack belongs to the texture or the importer
Open the image maps outside the engine and compare the same asset in GLB and FBX when both exports are available. If the seam is visible in the map or in every application, inspect UVs and re-bake or regenerate the texture. If only one format or one engine shows the seam, focus on texture embedding, path resolution, material interpretation, mipmaps, and importer behavior.
For an isolated overlap, move or unwrap the affected UV island, repaint the corresponding texture area, and export a test copy. For widespread cracks, repeated local edits can create more inconsistency; a fresh bake or regenerated texture is the more defensible choice.
Scoped Unreal GLB workaround
Meshy’s help article dated July 27, 2026 identifies a GLB texture-crack case in Unreal Engine 5.5.4 and 5.6.0. For that narrow combination, it recommends opening the affected texture’s Level Of Detail settings and changing Mip Gen Settings to NoMipMaps. Apply the change to a duplicate, recheck the exact engine version, and test the asset at the distances and lighting used in the game.

Fix blurry textures after plugin import
When a texture imported through Meshy’s Unreal plugin looks blurry, first select the texture in the Content Browser and wait for its asset preview to sharpen. If the project still shows the documented behavior, Meshy lists the Unreal Editor command r.Streaming.FullyLoadUsedTextures 1 as a workaround. Enter it in the editor command box, verify the result in the target project, and decide whether the additional streaming behavior is appropriate for that project.
Treat console commands as scoped troubleshooting steps. Record the command in your setup notes, test on a copy, and remove or revise it if it masks a path, mip, or texture-resolution problem that should be fixed at the asset or project level.
Correct scale and axis conversion
Scale and units
An asset that is invisible may be microscopic, while one that appears to fill the level may be thousands of times too large. Compare a known dimension in the DCC application with the engine’s world units, then inspect the importer’s scale multiplier. Unreal Engine documentation states that one Unreal Unit equals one centimeter. Use that as the Unreal-side reference, but confirm the source generator’s unit convention rather than assuming every tool exports in centimeters.
Apply scale consistently. If you change the importer multiplier for one asset, document why; otherwise, later collision, lighting, physics, and animation work can be built around an accidental correction. Re-import a copy and measure a recognizable feature, such as a door opening or character height, against a known scene object.
Axis and orientation
A model on its side usually reflects a mismatch between the source up axis and the engine’s up axis. Check the exporter’s axis options and the importer’s conversion setting together. Tripo’s workflow guide specifically flags Y-up/Z-up conversion as a common import check. Rotate the source or enable conversion in one place, not both, and verify the result with a test export so you do not introduce a double rotation.
Use Unreal’s FBX pipeline deliberately
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation describes an FBX static-mesh pipeline that supports meshes with materials and textures, custom collision, multiple UV sets, smoothing groups, vertex colors, LODs, and multiple meshes. The Unreal Engine 5 FBX importer uses FBX 2020.2 and warns that exporting another FBX version can cause incompatibilities. Confirm the exporter version before troubleshooting a material or geometry symptom that may actually be a file-version problem.

Triangulation is another controllable variable. Epic recommends triangulating deliberately in the modeling application when you need predictable results, rather than relying on importer triangulation. Export a copy with the intended triangulation and compare it with the engine-generated result, especially when shading or silhouette changes after import.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check collision, LODs, and scene setup
Collision
Visible geometry does not define gameplay collision automatically. Epic documents custom collision support in the FBX static-mesh pipeline and recommends verifying collision in the Static Mesh Editor. Display the collision primitives or custom hull, walk or simulate against them, and check thin surfaces, stairs, openings, and concave sections where an automatic approximation commonly fails.
LOD and bounds
If a model looks correct up close but disappears, pops, or becomes distorted at distance, inspect its LOD chain and screen-size thresholds. Confirm that the imported LODs contain the intended materials and UVs. Also inspect bounds: incorrect bounds can cause premature culling even when the mesh and textures are intact.
Lighting and shader context
A dark or flat result is not always a broken texture. Test the material under a neutral light and compare an unlit or basic preview when the engine provides one. If the maps are present and connected but the scene still looks wrong, inspect shader parameters, exposure, normal intensity, and project color-management settings before regenerating the asset.
Choose the right intervention
| Evidence | Preferred intervention | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Defect exists in the DCC application and engine | Repair geometry, UVs, normals, or textures, or regenerate the affected source. | The problem precedes import, so changing importer settings is unlikely to remove it. |
| Mesh is correct in the DCC application but materials are white in the engine | Fix texture paths, material slots, and map connections; compare embedded versus referenced textures. | The geometry transferred, but material data did not. |
| Only one export format fails | Re-export in the format that works, or correct that format’s embedding and version settings. | The failure follows a transfer path rather than the source mesh. |
| Only one engine or engine version fails | Check that version’s importer documentation and apply a scoped workaround on a copy. | Importer behavior and supported features vary by engine and release. |
| Texture seams cover most of the model | Re-bake or regenerate the texture. | Large-scale mapping defects are inefficient to patch one seam at a time. |
| Collision or LOD is wrong while appearance is correct | Edit or re-export collision and LOD data, then inspect them in the engine editor. | Visual correctness does not validate gameplay data. |
Regenerate geometry only after confirming that the defect resides in the generated source mesh. Otherwise, repeated generation can produce a different mesh while the same material, format, scale, or importer problem remains.

Engine and version notes
Unreal Engine
The documented Unreal references are version-specific. Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation identifies FBX 2020.2 for the FBX 5 import pipeline and one Unreal Unit as one centimeter. Meshy’s GLB crack article names Unreal Engine 5.5.4 and 5.6.0 only. Check the documentation for the exact release installed in your project before copying a setting from another version.
Unity
Meshy’s Unity plugin documentation names Unity 6, version 6000.0.45f1, as its tested version. That establishes the vendor’s test environment, not compatibility with every Unity release and not a general Unity repair procedure. Match any plugin or importer advice to the Unity version and package versions in your project.
Other engines and DCC tools
Format labels do not guarantee identical behavior across engines. Verify axis, units, material channels, texture paths, collision, and LOD handling in the actual generator, DCC application, and engine combination. A setting that fixes one Unreal import may be irrelevant or harmful in another engine.
Run a controlled verification pass
- Duplicate the preserved original export and note the generator, format, DCC, engine, and versions.
- Open the duplicate in a DCC application or neutral viewer and record geometry, UV, material, scale, and axis symptoms.
- Import it into a clean test scene with documented settings.
- Change one variable at a time: material link, texture path, format, scale, axis conversion, mip setting, or collision source.
- Compare the result with the original at close, medium, and gameplay distances.
- Inspect material slots, every required map, UV channels, collision, LODs, bounds, scale, and orientation.
- Promote the repaired asset to production only after the target scene reproduces the expected appearance and behavior.
Keep the clean source and the repaired derivative together. Naming the derivative with the engine version and change made—for example, a texture or export revision—makes later regression checks possible when the project or engine is upgraded.
What “game-ready” should mean
An AI-generated asset is not game-ready merely because an engine accepts its file. Readiness is a tested result for a specific mesh, material set, scale, target engine, collision setup, and LOD strategy. Before shipping, confirm the asset in the target project under representative lighting and distance, verify gameplay collision, and check that future re-imports will preserve the repair. This process turns an uncertain generated export into a controlled production asset without assuming that every generation or format behaves the same way.
