A major-version migration can require a new endpoint and code changes; a minor release normally keeps the same endpoint. The same symptoms can also come from an expired version, an invalid field mask, credentials, connectivity, or an unversioned platform change. The workflow below separates those causes and gives you a verifiable path to a fix.
Start by classifying the failure
Do not assume that the deployment caused every error reported afterward. Google Ads API responses and client-library exceptions contain evidence that can distinguish a schema break from an ordinary setup problem. Before editing code, classify the incident along these five axes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Question | What the answer means |
|---|---|
| Did the endpoint’s major version change? | A major release is backward-incompatible and uses a separate endpoint path. A minor release is backward-compatible and updates the existing major endpoint in place. |
| Is the old version still within its sunset window? | A deprecated version remains usable until its sunset date. After sunset, Google disables the endpoint and calls fail. |
| Does the error name a field, enum, resource, or field mask? | Compare that element with the migration guide, release notes, and proto differences for the exact version pair. |
| Can the application reach the intended service and authenticate? | Connectivity, OAuth, developer-token, login-customer, or account configuration problems can appear immediately after deployment without being API-schema changes. |
| Was there no major-version change? | Investigate unversioned behavior changes announced in the API blog, sunset documentation, or a Mandatory Service Announcement. |
Google describes major releases as introducing “breaking, backward-incompatible changes.” Read the versioning documentation alongside the upgrade guide before deciding which branch applies.
1. Record exactly what changed
Create a short incident record before making a second deployment. Include the source and target major API versions, the full endpoint used by the failing request, client-library release, programming language and runtime, operating environment, affected customer or test account type, operation name, and the first timestamp at which the failure appeared.

Confirm the endpoint change
Google denotes a major endpoint with a path such as vX. The minor suffix is not part of that endpoint path. Moving from one major version to another therefore requires a different path; moving to a minor release normally does not. A newer client library may still be necessary if you want definitions introduced by that minor release.
Check the retirement schedule first
Look up both versions on Google’s deprecation and sunset schedule. Deprecation is not the same as shutdown: calls can continue until the published sunset date. At sunset, Google disables the version, so even unchanged code fails. Future dates can be tentative; verify the live schedule rather than relying on an old ticket or calendar entry. Google says major versions last around 12 months and that there is at least a 20-week overlap between client-library availability for a new version and sunset of the retiring one. Those are planning policies, not a substitute for checking the date of your version.
Use the release notes for the transition
Write down the exact pair, for example “v24.2 to v25,” not merely “upgraded the API.” The upgrade guide and release notes are organized around specific transitions. Google identifies v25 as a major release dated July 22, 2026, and labels its changes as breaking. A v25 migration has different work from a v23-to-v24 migration.

2. Capture the failure before changing code
Preserve one complete failing request and response from the same deployment. Google’s troubleshooting guidance describes failures as structured JSON with an HTTP status, error code, and message; client libraries wrap those response errors in language-specific exceptions. Save the following fields in a sanitized incident log:
- HTTP status and top-level error code.
- Human-readable message and any error details.
- Field path, location, or field-mask text when supplied.
- Operation, request type, customer context, and timestamp.
- Client-library exception type and stack trace.
- Response
request-id. - A redacted request and response body.
Do not paste OAuth access tokens, refresh tokens, developer credentials, or customer IDs into tickets or public issue trackers. Google recommends request IDs because Developer Relations can use them to locate a production request. Keep the original sensitive material in your controlled logs and share only the sanitized version.

Read the error literally
An error that mentions a field mask, enum, resource, or request field is a strong lead toward a migration diff, but it is not proof by itself. Google’s illustrative troubleshooting response reports FIELD_NOT_FOUND and says the mask contains the invalid field keyword.match_type. That example shows how a stale field reference is exposed; it does not mean your incident has the same cause. Match the name and location in your own response.
Rule out reachability and authentication
Before changing a proto or request builder, verify that the application reaches the intended Google service, uses the expected endpoint, and loads the credentials intended for that environment. Confirm OAuth authorization, developer-token status, login-customer relationships, customer ID formatting, and any proxy or firewall changes. If a minimal authenticated request fails in the same way as the business operation, the problem is more likely setup or access than a removed business field.

3. Map the operation to Google’s migration material
Once the response is captured, use the upgrade guide for your exact source and target versions. Google’s checklist calls for three actions: update to a client-library release that supports the target version, point requests at the target major endpoint, and review release notes and proto differences.
Update the client library deliberately
Install the library release that supports the target major version in a controlled branch. Check generated classes and service names after the update; compilation success does not guarantee that request semantics stayed the same. Record the library version in the incident log so a rollback can reproduce the old behavior.
Read every relevant release note
Review notes for the target major release and intervening minor releases that your code actually uses. Search for the operation, resource, field, enum, service, and error code from your log. Then inspect the proto difference tables for additions, removals, renames, type changes, oneof moves, and changed requiredness.

Compare generated definitions with your request
For the failing method, compare the request and response types in the old and new client libraries. A field that still exists in a response may have moved in the request, changed its parent message, or become part of a oneof. Update field masks, serializers, selectors, and deserializers together; changing only the object assignment often leaves a stale mask or query behind.
4. Recognize the v25 breaking-change patterns
The following v25 examples illustrate how to read a migration diff. They are not universal fixes for every upgrade. Apply them only when the failing operation and error correspond to the documented v25 change.
Value adjustments moved into oneofs
In v25, additional_value and additional_high_lifetime_value moved into the value_adjustment and high_lifetime_value_adjustment oneofs, respectively, alongside multiplier fields. Code that writes or reads the old standalone fields must use the new containing structure and select the appropriate oneof member. Update any field mask or validation logic that names the former path.
Lifecycle goal resources were removed
Legacy CustomerLifecycleGoal and CampaignLifecycleGoal resources and services, together with related legacy settings and enums, were removed. Google directs integrations to the unified goals schema. The documented replacements include Goal.new_customer_acquisition_goal_settings and CampaignGoalConfig.campaign_new_customer_acquisition_settings. A “resource not found” or unknown service error on one of the legacy names should lead you to this mapping, not to a retry loop.
Incentive fields became standalone and some are required
Incentive request and response enum fields changed from nested type members to standalone fields such as incentive_type and offer_type. Use the new field locations in request construction, response handling, and field masks. The optional selected_incentive_id and customer_id fields on ApplyIncentiveRequest became required in v25; requests that previously omitted them must now supply valid values.

Do not generalize an example
A v25 change is evidence only for a v25 transition. If your log names another resource or field, return to the proto diff and release note for that exact pair. Guessing from a similar-looking v25 change can create a second incompatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Investigate failures that are not version-boundary changes
Unversioned API or product changes
Google says incompatible feature changes do not always align with a major API boundary. If the endpoint path did not change, check the stay-updated guidance, the API blog, the sunset page, and your organization’s email for a Mandatory Service Announcement. Keep the API contact email current so affected users receive notices. A Google Developer Profile can save the release-notes page and notify you when it changes.
Deprecated but still active version
If the version is deprecated but its sunset date has not passed, calls should still be accepted. Treat deprecation as a migration deadline, not as the immediate explanation for a request that suddenly fails. Compare the actual response with authentication and schema diagnostics while scheduling the upgrade.
Already-sunset endpoint
After sunset, no request-level code correction can restore that endpoint. Move to a supported major version, update the client library, and complete the documented migration. Do not spend time tuning retries against a disabled version.

A stale field mask, malformed query, omitted required field, wrong enum value, or changed oneof selection can fail even when the endpoint and credentials are correct. The response’s field location and message should determine which request component to inspect first.
Best Value
6. Apply the smallest fix and verify it
- Create a migration branch. Pin the target client-library version and endpoint so the test is reproducible.
- Change only the documented incompatibility. Update the removed or moved field, resource, enum, required value, field mask, or service call identified in the diff. Keep unrelated refactoring out of the incident fix.
- Run unit and integration tests. Cover request construction, field masks, oneof selection, response parsing, pagination, and error handling. Add a regression test for the exact failure.
- Use a test account first. Google recommends testing against a test account where possible. Exercise the same operation and representative data, then compare status, response fields, and logs with the failing production call.
- Use production only when necessary. If the defect depends on data that exists only in a particular production account, Google allows production testing for that case. Restrict scope, protect credentials, and avoid destructive operations.
- Deploy with observability. Log sanitized error details, request IDs, endpoint version, client-library version, and operation name. Alert on the specific error code so a recurrence is visible.
- Confirm the old failure is gone. Re-run the originally failing request and at least one neighboring operation that uses the same resource or field family.
Google’s troubleshooting guidance explicitly recommends changing the code and testing the fix against a test account, or production only when the bug applies to data in a specific production account. Useful error handling should expose enough detail for the next diagnosis without exposing secrets.
7. Prepare a support escalation that can be acted on
If documentation and a controlled test do not resolve the issue, send a concise, sanitized case. Include:
- Source and target major versions and the date of the upgrade.
- Endpoint path, client-library version, language/runtime, platform, and operation.
- HTTP status, Google Ads API error code, message, field location, and timestamp.
- Response request ID.
- Redacted JSON request and response.
- A small code snippet that builds the failing request.
- The release-note or proto-diff entry you believe is related.
- Whether the call fails in a test account, production account, or both.
Remove OAuth access and refresh tokens, developer credentials, customer IDs, and any account data that is not required to reproduce the problem. A precise version transition and request ID are more useful than a general statement that “the upgrade broke the API.”
Build a process that prevents the next surprise
Track versions as release artifacts
Store the endpoint major version and client-library version in configuration and deployment metadata. Treat a major-version change as a planned migration with a ticket, owner, rollback plan, and test-account run, not as an incidental dependency update.
Watch the official change channels
Google says the Google Ads API typically has three major releases and three major sunsets each year, although dates are not guaranteed. Monitor the release notes, the official API blog, and the sunset schedule. Keep the API contact email current and save the release-notes page in a Google Developer Profile if you want update notifications.
Test the edges most likely to break
- Field masks that name nested paths.
- Queries selecting newly moved or removed fields.
- Oneof assignments and mutually exclusive values.
- Enum parsing and serialization.
- Required request fields that were formerly optional.
- Resources and services marked legacy in release notes.
- Error logging and request-ID capture.
Plan before sunset
Google’s approximate 12-month major-version lifespan and the documented overlap between new client libraries and retiring versions provide planning time, but neither guarantees your specific dates. Use the live schedule to set an internal deadline well before sunset, then validate the complete operation set in a test account.
A compact decision path
- Endpoint changed? If yes, follow the major-version upgrade guide and proto diff. If no, continue.
- Version sunset? If yes, migrate; if no, continue.
- Credentials and connectivity valid? If no, fix setup; if yes, continue.
- Error names a field, resource, enum, or mask? Match it to the exact release notes and generated definitions.
- No documented version match? Check unversioned announcements and Mandatory Service Announcements.
- Fix identified? Test in a test account, add a regression test, deploy with sanitized diagnostics, and verify the original request.
The reliable remedy is evidence-led: identify the real version boundary, preserve the structured error, map the failing operation to Google’s exact migration material, and validate a narrow change before broad rollout.
