If the crash remains, investigate the game and PC rather than assuming a mod is responsible. If the clean game works, re-enable changes one at a time to narrow down what triggers the failure.
Start with a baseline you can compare
Before changing files, record when the failure happens: on launch, while loading, in a particular scene, or after a visual change. Note your storefront, each installed mod and its version, and any recent game or graphics-driver update. Back up saves and custom configuration before removing or resetting files.

Mods and game patches can interact unpredictably. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment warned in its October 30, 2015 PC update: “Please note that we cannot guarantee compatibility between patches when using 3rd party tools that modify the game files.” That is a historical warning, not a current compatibility check for any particular mod.

Disable mods and other graphics tools
Temporarily disable all mods and tools that change graphics, then turn off overlays, FPS counters, and recording software. WB support specifically advises disabling third-party graphics tools or tweaks and game-overlay programs because they may conflict with the game: WB’s PC troubleshooting guidance.

Launch the game in this clean state and try to reproduce the same failure. If it still crashes, the result does not point to a mod as the cause; continue with the non-mod checks below. If it runs, that narrows the problem to something you disabled, but does not by itself identify the exact cause.
Find the change that brings the crash back
- Check each mod’s current author instructions and compatibility notes before enabling or reinstalling it. Do not assume compatibility survived a game update.
- Re-enable one mod or tool, restart the game, and test the same scene or action that previously caused the crash.
- Repeat with the next change only after the game has remained stable with the previous one enabled.
- If the crash returns, disable that change again and repeat the comparison to see whether the same trigger is consistent. Then check the author’s removal steps and known-conflict notes before deciding what to change.
This one-at-a-time process is a practical way to isolate a trigger; WB recommends disabling graphics tools and overlays, but does not prescribe a mod manager or claim this procedure proves a mod itself is defective. When reviewing mod compatibility, look for the supported game version or last update, required dependencies, the files or systems modified, installation and removal instructions, and documented conflicts. Compatibility claims should come from the mod author’s current documentation.

Reset configuration and verify Steam files
If configuration changes or modified files may be involved, WB’s documented recovery sequence is to close the game, remove its BMGame/Config folder, verify the game files through Steam, and relaunch. The archived PC update gives similar advice for launch or performance problems involving modified configuration files: WB’s October 30, 2015 patch announcement.

If the clean game still crashes, check other causes
When the same failure occurs with mods and graphics tools disabled, follow WB’s general PC troubleshooting recommendations:
- Lower graphics settings and check for improved stability.
- Check for current video and sound drivers. If the problem began after a driver update, consider rolling back to the previous version.
- Check Windows updates for DirectX components.
- Return overclocked components to their manufacturer settings.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined a game file and whether background applications are interfering.
These checks address possible causes; none alone establishes why a particular crash occurs. WB’s guidance is available at the PC troubleshooting page.

Escalate with a useful report
If the clean installation continues to fail, provide WB support or the relevant community with the details needed to compare cases: crash timing, any error text, storefront, mod names and versions, recent game or driver changes, and whether the same failure occurs with mods disabled. Steam’s Arkham Knight product page links to official WB support and community discussions and guides. Treat community workarounds as leads, not confirmation that an old fix is safe or current.
