When an AT&T iPhone shows LTE, cannot activate Wi‑Fi Calling, or drops calls, first identify which connection layer is failing. 5G depends on the iPhone model, AT&T plan, cellular settings and local coverage. Wi‑Fi Calling depends on an internet-connected Wi‑Fi network, the correct iPhone setting, an eligible postpaid AT&T account with HD Voice, and a verified Emergency 911 Address.
Use the 5G and Wi‑Fi Calling procedures below as separate tracks. LTE can be normal 5G Auto behavior, while a missing Wi‑Fi Calling option usually points to account eligibility, provisioning, line selection or an iPhone configuration issue.

Start by identifying the exact symptom
Do not treat every missing 5G icon as a service outage. A working data connection, an LTE indicator and an SOS/No Service warning describe different conditions.

|---|---|---|
| LTE while data works | 5G Auto may have selected LTE because 5G would not noticeably improve the current task, or 5G is unavailable at that location. | Check the Voice & Data setting, plan eligibility and coverage before changing anything. |
| No 5G indicator and slow data | Possible coverage, plan, setting, temporary radio or account-provisioning problem. | Follow the 5G track and compare performance in another known coverage area. |
| SOS, No Service or calls failing everywhere | A broader cellular registration or account problem, not simply a 5G preference. | Check the line, Airplane Mode and account status; contact AT&T if service does not return. |
| Wi‑Fi Calling option is absent | The line may not be eligible or provisioned, HD Voice may not be active, the wrong Dual SIM line may be selected, or carrier settings may be outdated. | Verify AT&T prerequisites and the selected line before resetting the phone. |
| Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled but calls drop or sound poor | The iPhone may be connected to a weak, congested or internet-less Wi‑Fi network. | Test the Wi‑Fi connection itself, then rejoin the network and restart. |
Before changing settings: confirm the line and prerequisites
Check the iPhone model and AT&T plan
5G requires an iPhone model that supports 5G, an AT&T line and plan that include 5G, and an AT&T 5G coverage area. Apple’s missing-5G guidance puts carrier support and coverage ahead of troubleshooting settings. Confirm the details with AT&T, particularly if the line was recently changed, migrated or added to a family account.

Wi‑Fi Calling has a different eligibility rule. AT&T states that the iPhone must have a Wi‑Fi internet connection and a postpaid AT&T wireless account provisioned with HD Voice. A Wi‑Fi network by itself cannot add the feature to an ineligible line.
Select the intended line on a Dual SIM iPhone
On a Dual SIM iPhone, cellular settings can be attached to a particular line. Make sure the AT&T number you want to troubleshoot is selected before judging either the 5G status or Wi‑Fi Calling setting. A correctly configured second line does not prove that the AT&T line has the same eligibility or provisioning.
Track A: fix missing, slow or unexpected AT&T 5G
1. Decide whether LTE is actually a fault
Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. On some iOS versions or configurations, labels can differ slightly; on Dual SIM phones, enter the settings for the intended line.

|---|---|---|
| 5G Auto | The iPhone uses 5G when it expects a noticeable benefit and can use LTE to conserve battery when 5G would not improve the task. | Best default for balancing coverage, performance and battery life. |
| 5G On | The iPhone prioritizes 5G when available. | A diagnostic comparison in a confirmed 5G area; it can increase battery use, so it is not a universal fix. |
| LTE | The iPhone stays on LTE. | Useful for deliberately testing LTE or conserving battery, but it prevents a 5G connection. |
If the phone is on 5G Auto and data works, an LTE indicator alone does not establish a failure. If you are in a confirmed AT&T 5G area and want to compare behavior, select 5G On briefly, test the same task, then return to 5G Auto if there is no meaningful improvement.
2. Verify coverage and account eligibility
Check AT&T’s coverage information for your current location and ask AT&T to confirm that the specific line and plan support 5G. Buildings, terrain, congestion and indoor signal loss can make a 5G-capable phone use LTE even where an outdoor map shows 5G. Do not infer speed or reliability from the 5G icon; the indicator identifies the radio mode, not a guaranteed throughput.

3. Refresh the cellular connection
- Open Control Center or the Settings app and turn Airplane Mode on.
- Wait several seconds so the cellular radio disconnects.
- Turn Airplane Mode off and wait for the AT&T signal indicator to return.
- Retry the same data task and note whether the phone registers on 5G, LTE or neither.
This is Apple’s recommended first refresh for a missing 5G indicator. If the phone remains on SOS or No Service, treat that as a broader cellular-registration problem rather than a 5G preference issue.
4. Install an offered carrier-settings update
Carrier settings can add or update support for 5G and Wi‑Fi Calling. Connect to Wi‑Fi or cellular data, then open Settings > General > About. Stay on that page briefly. If iOS presents a carrier-settings update, accept it and restart if prompted. If no prompt appears, do not assume an update is required; continue with the other checks.

5. Test the symptom in a controlled way
- Test outdoors or at another location listed as covered by AT&T, because one building can block 5G.
- Use the same app or download when comparing 5G Auto, 5G On and LTE.
- Record whether the problem is the indicator, general data responsiveness, a single app or all cellular data.
- Compare with another AT&T line only as a clue; different plans, devices and locations can produce different results.
A 5G icon does not guarantee a particular speed, and LTE can deliver an adequate experience. The useful question is whether the service meets your task in a location where the plan and coverage should support it.
6. Escalate persistent 5G problems to AT&T
Contact AT&T when the line repeatedly shows SOS/No Service, never registers on 5G in confirmed coverage with a supported plan, or has poor service in multiple locations. Ask the representative to check:
- Account status and any service suspension.
- 5G eligibility for the exact plan and line.
- Line provisioning and the selected SIM or eSIM.
- Known coverage or network issues at the affected location.
If AT&T confirms the account, plan, provisioning and coverage are normal, contact Apple for device-level diagnosis. The 5G indicator alone is not enough to declare an iPhone hardware failure.

Track B: fix Wi‑Fi Calling that is missing, inactive or unreliable
1. Confirm the account and network requirements
AT&T requires an active Wi‑Fi internet connection and a postpaid AT&T wireless account provisioned with HD Voice. Connect the iPhone to a network that can actually reach the internet; a Wi‑Fi symbol without internet access cannot carry Wi‑Fi Calling. A weak or unstable connection can cause activation failures, dropped calls or poor audio even when the feature is enabled.
2. Turn on Wi‑Fi Calling and complete the emergency-address step
Depending on iOS version and carrier configuration, open either Settings > Cellular > Wi‑Fi Calling or Settings > Phone > Wi‑Fi Calling. Select the AT&T line if prompted, then enable Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone.
AT&T may ask you to enter and verify an Emergency 911 Address. Complete that flow accurately before expecting activation. AT&T explains that emergency calls use cellular where possible; if cellular is unavailable, location information or the registered E911 address may be used. Keep the address current if you move or primarily use Wi‑Fi Calling from another location.
3. Confirm that Wi‑Fi Calling is the active path
When the iPhone is connected to Wi‑Fi, Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled and cellular service is weak or unavailable, AT&T indicates the feature with a carrier/Wi‑Fi label in the status area. The exact appearance can vary by iOS version and screen layout. A normal Wi‑Fi symbol or a 5G icon by itself does not prove that a call is using Wi‑Fi Calling.
Place a short test call from the same location where cellular service is weak. If the call connects and the carrier/Wi‑Fi indication appears, the feature is functioning there. Test again after moving to a different Wi‑Fi network; behavior on one network does not establish that every network will work.

4. Work from the Wi‑Fi connection outward
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off unless you are deliberately testing Wi‑Fi Calling with cellular radios disabled. With Airplane Mode on, turn Wi‑Fi back on and verify that the network still has internet access.
- Open a web page or another internet-dependent app to confirm that Wi‑Fi is not merely connected locally.
- Move closer to the access point and retry the call if the signal is weak.
- In Settings > Wi‑Fi, tap the network, choose Forget This Network, reconnect and re-enter its password.
- Restart the iPhone, then recheck the Wi‑Fi Calling toggle and place another test call.
If calls work on a different Wi‑Fi network, the original network is the leading suspect. Check its internet service, congestion and coverage before changing iPhone settings again.
5. Recheck carrier settings and AT&T provisioning
Use Settings > General > About to accept any carrier-settings update that iOS offers. If the Wi‑Fi Calling menu is absent, activation never completes or the feature disappears after a line change, ask AT&T to verify HD Voice provisioning, plan restrictions, line compatibility and account status. Ask specifically whether the intended Dual SIM line is provisioned; another line on the same iPhone may not be.
6. Reset network settings only after simpler checks
AT&T’s iPhone troubleshooting guidance places Reset Network Settings after basic connection and restart checks. Current iOS versions generally place it under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings; menu wording can vary.
This reset removes saved Wi‑Fi passwords and other network configuration, so have the passwords available and use it only when reconnecting networks is acceptable. It does not replace AT&T account provisioning. After the reset, join Wi‑Fi again, enable Wi‑Fi Calling, complete any E911 prompt and test a call.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the scope of the problem to choose the next test
| Comparison | What the result suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One location versus everywhere | Failure in one building or one Wi‑Fi network points toward local radio or network conditions; failure everywhere points more strongly to account, settings or device issues. | Repeat the test at another covered location and on another Wi‑Fi network. |
| One Dual SIM line versus both lines | A single-line failure suggests line selection, plan eligibility or provisioning. | Open settings for the affected line and ask AT&T to inspect that line. |
| LTE with working data versus SOS/No Service | LTE with usable data can be normal 5G Auto behavior; SOS/No Service indicates loss of cellular registration. | Use the 5G setting and Airplane Mode checks for LTE; escalate registration loss if it persists. |
| Wi‑Fi symbol versus carrier/Wi‑Fi indication | Wi‑Fi connectivity alone does not prove that calls are using Wi‑Fi Calling. | Confirm the feature toggle, cellular weakness and the carrier/Wi‑Fi status indication during a test call. |
| One call application versus every call | A single app problem may be unrelated to carrier Wi‑Fi Calling. | Test with the iPhone’s regular Phone app before changing network settings. |
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting slower
- Forcing 5G On as a permanent cure: It prioritizes 5G but can increase battery use and cannot create coverage where none exists.
- Assuming LTE means the plan is broken: 5G Auto intentionally uses LTE when 5G would not improve the experience.
- Confusing Wi‑Fi with Wi‑Fi Calling: Internet access and a Wi‑Fi icon do not establish that the carrier feature is enabled or provisioned.
- Skipping the E911 address: Activation may remain incomplete, and emergency-call routing depends on accurate location information.
- Resetting network settings first: The reset erases saved Wi‑Fi passwords and does not fix an ineligible or unprovisioned AT&T account.
- Changing several variables at once: Record the original Voice & Data mode, line selection and Wi‑Fi network so you can identify which change affected the result.
When a home Wi‑Fi router is relevant
A router is worth investigating only after testing shows that Wi‑Fi Calling fails or has poor quality on your home network but works on another reliable Wi‑Fi connection. First check the existing network’s internet service, signal strength, placement and congestion. The troubleshooting evidence supports weak or unstable Wi‑Fi as a possible cause, but it does not establish that buying new hardware will fix every Wi‑Fi Calling problem.

Model, iOS and support limitations
AT&T’s detailed failure checklist cited for these procedures was written for iPhone 14, so menu names and ordering may not match every iPhone or current iOS release. Use the equivalent setting shown on your device rather than forcing an exact label. Apple’s 5G guidance used here is general iPhone guidance localized for Singapore; apply its device-setting advice, but confirm US plan eligibility, coverage and account status with AT&T.
No current outage, localized performance measurement, guaranteed speed or troubleshooting success rate is established by these procedures. If the same failure survives the appropriate setting, connection, update and line checks, provide AT&T with the location, time, selected line, indicator shown and steps already attempted. That information lets support distinguish coverage from provisioning more quickly.
Escalation checklist
Have these details ready before contacting support:
- iPhone model and iOS version.
- Whether the phone uses one SIM or Dual SIM, and which line is affected.
- Voice & Data selection: 5G Auto, 5G On or LTE.
- Exact indicator: 5G, LTE, SOS, No Service or a carrier/Wi‑Fi label.
- Whether the issue occurs at one location or several.
- For Wi‑Fi Calling, the Wi‑Fi network tested, internet connectivity result and whether the E911 address was verified.
- Whether Settings > General > About offered a carrier-settings update.
Ask AT&T to check account status, plan eligibility, 5G coverage, HD Voice and Wi‑Fi Calling provisioning, and line configuration. If those checks are clear and the issue remains specific to the iPhone, Apple can investigate the device.
