How to troubleshoot app crashes on Google TV Streamer

If an app keeps closing, freezing, or crashing on Google TV Streamer, start with the least disruptive fixes: update the app in Google Play, force-stop it from Settings, restart the Streamer, and install any available system update. If the problem remains, clear that app’s data and then contact its developer. Keep a factory reset as a last resort because it erases device data.

Google’s crash-specific guidance is written for Google TV generally, so menu names can differ slightly by Streamer software version. The paths below follow Google’s documented routes; use the closest matching label on your screen.

First, identify what is actually failing

Before changing settings, observe the failure for a minute. Write down whether one app fails or several apps do, whether the app closes immediately or only after playback starts, and whether a particular button or action triggers the crash. This simple record determines which troubleshooting branch to try first; it does not prove a particular cause.

What you observe Best first focus Why this focus fits
Only one app closes or freezes Update and force-stop that app Google’s crash instructions target the affected app first.
Several apps fail Restart Google TV Streamer and check for a system update A broader failure justifies checking the device software as well as individual apps.
The app closes at launch Update, force-stop, then clear the app’s data if necessary These steps address the app process and its saved local state.
The app fails only during playback or shows buffering Separate a crash from a connectivity or playback problem Google’s crash page is for apps that close; network troubleshooting belongs to the broader device guide.

Keep the app name, app version if visible, Google TV Streamer software version, and the exact point of failure. Those details are useful if you ultimately need the developer’s help. Also note whether the home screen and other apps remain responsive. That distinction helps support staff tell an app-specific fault from a broader device problem without guessing at a cause.

1. Update the app from Google Play

Google lists app updating as a first-line remedy for an app that crashes while you use Google TV. On the TV interface, open Google Play Store, open the profile icon, choose Manage apps & games, open Updates, and select Update all. Google documents this route in its crash guide at Fix app crashes on Google TV.

  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Apps and launch Google Play Store.
  2. Open the profile icon in the upper-right area.
  3. Select Manage apps & games, then Updates.
  4. Choose Update all, or update the app that is failing.
  5. When the update finishes, open the app again and repeat the action that previously caused the crash.

The exact labels can vary with the device interface. If you do not see an Updates heading, look for the Play Store’s app-management or pending-updates screen rather than downloading an installer from an unrelated website. An update can correct an app defect or compatibility issue, but it is not a guarantee that every crash will stop.

Test after the update instead of assuming the installation worked. Reproduce the same launch, menu selection, or playback action that caused the closure. If the failure has changed—for example, it now occurs at a different point—record that change for the developer rather than repeating unrelated resets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Force-stop the affected app

Force-stopping closes the app process so that the next launch starts fresh. Google’s direct crash procedure is to open Settings > Apps, select the affected app, choose Force stop, and confirm. The wording and nesting can differ slightly between Google TV versions.

  1. From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose the app that is crashing. If the first screen shows only a short list, open the option that displays all installed apps.
  4. Select Force stop and confirm.
  5. Return to the home screen and open the app again.

Force-stop does not ask you to sign in again or erase the app’s saved settings; it simply ends the current process. Test the same screen, video, or command that triggered the failure. If the app still crashes, continue to the device-level checks rather than repeatedly force-stopping it.

Do not confuse Force stop with Clear data. They may appear together on the app-information page, but they have different effects. Force-stop is the reversible first action; clearing data resets local app information and is better reserved for later.

3. Restart Google TV Streamer

A restart is the next low-impact step, particularly when more than one app is unstable or the interface itself feels unresponsive. Google’s general performance guidance gives the path Settings > System > Restart; see Fix a slow or laggy Google TV device. Menu locations may vary on your Streamer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings from the Google TV home screen.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose Restart and confirm if prompted.
  4. Wait for the home screen to return fully before launching the problem app.

After the restart, test the app once. If several apps continue to crash, do not assume that reinstalling each one is the answer; check the Streamer’s system software next. A restart is also useful after an app update so the app and the device begin the next test from a clean session.

4. Check for a Google TV system update

Out-of-date device software can be relevant when multiple apps misbehave. Google’s documented update route is Settings > System > About > System update, also described in its performance troubleshooting guidance.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System, then About.
  3. Select System update.
  4. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen installation instructions and allow the Streamer to restart.
  5. Open the app again after the update completes.

Do not treat a system-update check as proof that the update will fix a particular app. It is a sensible device-wide check when failures extend beyond one app. Google’s labels can change with software revisions, so look for equivalent About or System update entries if your screen is arranged differently.

If only one app remains broken while other apps open normally after the system update, return to that app’s support path. A device update is a broad check, not a reason to keep changing unrelated settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Clear the affected app’s data only if the earlier steps fail

Google’s broader device troubleshooting sequence includes clearing data for app or playback problems. It is a later, app-specific step rather than a guaranteed crash fix. Clearing data resets the app’s local state; you may have to sign in again, restore preferences, or configure the app from the beginning.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then See all apps if that option appears.
  3. Choose the affected app.
  4. Select Clear data and confirm.
  5. Launch the app, complete any sign-in or setup prompts, and test the failing action.

Use this action for the app that crashes, not as a blanket cleanup step for every installed app. It removes local app information, so make sure you know the account credentials or setup details you will need afterward. Google’s device troubleshooting page is Fix problems with your Google TV device.

Clearing data is different from merely closing an app. It can remove locally stored preferences and other app state, while account information held by the service may still be available after you sign in again. Because the exact data an app stores varies, treat the step as a reset of that app’s local configuration, not as a promise that saved content or settings will be preserved.

Crash, playback failure, or connection problem?

The remedy depends on the symptom. A crash means the app closes, returns you to the home screen, freezes and becomes unusable, or repeatedly fails at the same point. Use the app-update and force-stop sequence above. Buffering, an inability to load content, or an error that specifically mentions the network may be a connectivity or playback problem instead. Google’s broader troubleshooting guide covers those device issues, but its network checks should not be presented as a proven fix for an app that is actually crashing.

When the same app closes only after you start a particular video, note that distinction for the developer. When every app loses playback or the entire interface is affected, record that broader scope before changing individual app data.

A frozen picture with working remote navigation is not necessarily the same as a complete device lockup. Note whether you can return to the home screen, open Settings, or launch another app. Those observations tell support whether the failure is confined to one app session or affects Google TV more generally.

6. Contact the app developer when one app still fails

Google’s crash-specific instructions direct you to the app developer if updating and force-stopping do not resolve the problem. This is especially important when other apps work normally and the failure is repeatable in one title.

Give the developer a concise, reproducible report:

  • The exact app name and its installed version, if the app displays one.
  • That the device is a Google TV Streamer, along with the Streamer’s software version.
  • What happens: immediate closure, a freeze, a return to the home screen, or a crash during playback.
  • The action or screen that precedes the failure and whether it happens every time or intermittently.
  • Which Google TV steps you already tried: app update, force-stop, restart, system-update check, and (if used) clearing the app’s data.

Use the developer’s support option in the app or its official help channel. Google’s instruction to contact the developer is on Fix app crashes on Google TV. Avoid posting account passwords or other private information in a support ticket.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include the approximate time of a recent failure if the developer requests logs, but do not claim that a log exists unless the app provides one. Explain whether the issue began after an app or system update and whether a second app shows the same behavior. A short sequence such as “open app, choose profile, start title, app closes” is more useful than a general statement that the app is broken.

7. Keep a factory reset as the last resort

A factory reset is disruptive and should not be the next step after a single app crash. Google warns that “A factory reset erases all your data from your device.” It can also require apps and content to be downloaded again. The reset procedure differs by device, so do not copy a button sequence intended for another streaming model.

Before considering a reset:

  • Confirm that the app is updated and has been force-stopped.
  • Restart the Streamer and check System update.
  • Clear data only for the affected app if that is the remaining app-specific test.
  • Record the app and device details needed by the developer.
  • Make sure you know the Google account and app credentials you will need during setup.

If you still decide a reset is warranted, use Google’s device-specific instructions rather than improvising. Google’s general warning and troubleshooting sequence are at Fix problems with your Google TV device; guidance for an unresponsive device is at Fix an unresponsive Google TV device. A reset may remove local device data and force you to download apps and content again, so reserve it for persistent, device-wide problems or support-directed recovery.

Do not use a factory reset simply because a menu label moved or because one app has a repeatable defect. If the problem affects only one title, the app developer is the appropriate escalation point. A reset is a device-recovery action with a much higher cost in time and local data.

  1. One app only: update it in Google Play, then force-stop it.
  2. Still failing: restart Google TV Streamer and retry.
  3. More than one app failing: check the system update after restarting.
  4. One app remains broken: clear that app’s data, remembering that sign-in and preferences may be reset.
  5. Failure continues: contact the app developer with the app, Streamer/software version, and crash point.
  6. Device-wide failure persists: consult Google’s reset guidance and treat factory reset as the final recovery option.

This sequence moves from reversible software actions to increasingly disruptive ones. It also separates an app-specific failure, which belongs with the developer, from a broader Google TV device problem.

What not to buy or install for an app crash

Google’s crash guidance calls for software updates, force-stopping, device troubleshooting, and developer support. It does not establish that replacing the Streamer, adding an Ethernet cable, changing power accessories, replacing the remote, or installing a third-party cleanup or optimization utility will fix an app that closes. Those purchases may address a different hardware or control problem, but they are not supported crash remedies in the documented sequence.

Likewise, a streaming-service change is not a troubleshooting step for a crash in an installed app. Identify the failing app and follow its support path before making hardware or subscription changes. Avoid sideloading an installer from an unrelated site as a substitute for updating through Google Play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the menu does not match

Google TV menus can change between devices and software versions. If you cannot find an item at the exact location listed here, use the nearest equivalent:

  • Look under Settings > Apps for the app list, then open the app’s detail page.
  • Look under Settings > System for Restart, and under System > About for update controls.
  • On app detail pages, distinguish Force stop from Clear data; the latter resets local state.
  • For a reset, use instructions written for Google TV Streamer instead of another Google TV or Android TV model.

If the app name is missing from the app list, or the Settings screen is itself unusable, document that fact for Google device support and the app developer. Do not perform a factory reset merely because a label moved.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Repeating one step without testing: After each action, reopen the app and repeat the same trigger so you know whether anything changed.
  • Clearing every app’s data: Start with the affected app. Broad data clearing creates extra sign-ins without establishing that the device is at fault.
  • Treating buffering as a crash: Record whether the app actually closes or simply cannot load playback. Those symptoms follow different support paths.
  • Using another model’s reset sequence: Reset instructions vary by device. Use Google TV Streamer-specific guidance.
  • Leaving out version information: App and Streamer software versions help the developer reproduce a compatibility problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an app keep crashing on my Google TV Streamer?

Start by checking whether only that app fails. Google’s crash guidance prioritizes updating the app in Google Play and force-stopping it from Settings > Apps. If several apps fail, restart the Streamer and check for a system update as well. A repeatable failure in one app after those steps should go to that app’s developer.

How do I force-stop an app on Google TV?

Open Settings > Apps, select the affected app, choose Force stop, and confirm. Return to the home screen and launch the app again. Menu labels may vary slightly, so look for the app’s detail page if the list is nested under an all-apps option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing app data fix a crashing app?

It can be a reasonable later step, but Google presents clearing data in its broader device troubleshooting guidance rather than as a guaranteed crash cure. Use Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Clear data when updating, force-stopping, restarting, and checking the system update have not helped. You may need to sign in again and restore preferences.

Should I restart before checking for an update?

Restarting is a low-impact step and Google’s performance guidance includes it. You can restart first, then check Settings > System > About > System update. If multiple apps are unstable, complete both checks before clearing individual app data.

What if the app crashes only during playback?

Note whether the app closes or merely buffers, displays a playback error, or cannot load a title. The crash-specific steps apply when the app closes or becomes unusable. Network and playback symptoms belong to Google’s broader device troubleshooting path and should be described separately to the app developer.

When should I contact the app developer?

Contact the developer after the app update and force-stop steps fail, particularly when other apps work. Include the app name and version, Google TV Streamer and software version, the exact crash point, how often it happens, and the steps you already tried.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a factory reset delete my apps?

Google warns that a factory reset erases all data from the device, and apps and content may need to be downloaded again. Keep it for persistent, device-wide problems or a support-directed recovery. Use instructions for Google TV Streamer rather than another model.

Should I buy an Ethernet cable or replacement Streamer?

Not for an app that simply closes. The documented crash sequence uses app and system software checks, force-stop, clearing the affected app’s data when needed, and developer support. Hardware purchases may address another problem, but they are not established crash fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does an app keep crashing on my Google TV Streamer?

Update the app in Google Play and force-stop it from Settings > Apps. If several apps fail, restart the Streamer and check for a system update. Escalate a repeatable, single-app failure to that app’s developer.

How do I force-stop an app on Google TV?

Open Settings > Apps, select the affected app, choose Force stop, and confirm. Then reopen the app and repeat the action that caused the crash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing app data fix a crashing app?

It is a later troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. Clear data only for the affected app after updating, force-stopping, restarting, and checking system updates; expect to sign in and configure the app again.

Should I factory-reset Google TV Streamer after one app crashes?

No. Google says a factory reset erases device data and may require apps and content to be downloaded again. Reserve it for persistent device-wide problems or support-directed recovery.

What information should I send the app developer?

Provide the app name and version, Google TV Streamer and software version, the exact screen or action that precedes the crash, how often it occurs, and the troubleshooting steps you already completed.

The Bottom Line

For a crashing Google TV Streamer app, update it in Google Play, force-stop it, restart the Streamer, and check for a system update. Clear only the affected app’s data if needed, then contact its developer with precise version and crash details. Factory-reset the device only as a last resort because it erases local data.
