Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start by identifying exactly what stopped updating: the phone–computer connection, one feature inside an otherwise working connection, or Android’s Google Account sync. Those are different systems with different fixes. For a concrete example, the steps below use Microsoft Phone Link on Windows and its Android app, Link to Windows; other companions may use different menus, but the same diagnostic order helps.
Do not begin by deleting the pairing or buying replacement hardware. First record what the app says, which data is stale, and whether either device recently changed accounts, power settings, network, or software. That small distinction prevents a feature permission problem from turning into a full re-setup.

Identify the sync failure before changing settings
“My content won’t sync” can describe several unrelated failures. Look at the companion app on both screens and answer these questions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Do the phone and computer still show as linked, or does the app report that the device is unavailable?
- Did every type of content stop, or only messages, photos, calls, notifications, or apps?
- Is the problem inside an Android Google Account, such as Gmail or contacts, rather than in a desktop companion?
- Can both devices reach the internet, and are they using the accounts that were paired during setup?
- Did the failure begin after an app update, an Android update, a password change, or enabling a power-saving mode?
A connection failure requires pairing, account, power, or network checks. A single-feature failure usually means that feature’s permission or toggle is wrong while the underlying pairing remains healthy. Google Account synchronization is controlled by Android’s account settings and is not the same channel as a Windows companion.

Write down the exact symptom before troubleshooting. For example, “Phone Link says connected, photos update, but notifications stopped” points to a different branch than “Phone Link cannot find the phone.” If the symptom changes during testing, note what changed and undo only the last test where practical.
Use this symptom map to choose the right path
| What you see | Likely fault category to check first | Correct guidance |
|---|---|---|
| The desktop app says the phone is disconnected or unavailable | Pairing, account, internet, Wi-Fi communication, power-saving restriction, or an outdated app | Follow the Phone Link connection checks below if you use Windows, or the equivalent support steps for your companion. |
| Devices appear linked, but only messages, photos, calls, notifications, or apps are stale | A feature permission or feature toggle | Open the companion’s feature-specific settings and the matching troubleshooting guide; do not immediately unpair a working connection. |
| Several Google services on the phone are not updating | Android Google Account auto-sync, sign-in, internet access, or an Android update | Use Google’s Fix account sync issues procedure. |
| Both devices are on the same Wi-Fi but cannot discover each other | Router Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation | Ask the network administrator to inspect that setting; it can block device-to-device traffic even on one Wi-Fi name. |
| Sync works briefly, then stops when the screen is off | Battery saver or another background restriction | Temporarily disable Battery saver on both devices and retest before changing the pairing. |
| A reconnect prompt appears after an update | One side has not completed updating or needs a fresh app session | Update both components, close and reopen them, wait several minutes, and restart the Android phone if recognition remains stuck. |
There is no published failure-rate table in the official guidance, so do not assume one cause is statistically “most common.” Work through the branch that matches the observed symptom. A plausible cause is not a diagnosis until the relevant check changes the result.
Phone Link example: confirm the prerequisites
The following checks apply specifically to Microsoft Phone Link on Windows paired with Link to Windows on Android. Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting, requirements and setup, and setup troubleshooting pages are the authoritative references for current labels and requirements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep both devices powered, online, and nearby
Turn on the Android phone and Windows PC and verify that each can reach the internet. During setup, keep them near one another and on the same trusted Wi-Fi network; Microsoft describes that arrangement as the fastest, most reliable connection. A phone can use mobile data for Phone Link when the mobile-data option is enabled in Link to Windows settings, but Wi-Fi is preferable when your data allowance is limited.
Test connectivity independently: open a web page on the PC and the phone, then return to the companion apps. A Wi-Fi icon alone does not prove that the network permits the required traffic. If one device is offline, captive-portal sign-in is pending, or a VPN or corporate policy blocks access, resolve that condition first and retest.
Keep the phone awake during initial setup and place it close to the computer. Once pairing is established, normal use may not require the devices to be side by side, but a nearby, trusted network removes avoidable variables while diagnosing.
Verify the Microsoft account
Phone Link and Link to Windows must be signed in with the same Microsoft account. Open the account details in each app and compare the address, rather than relying on a saved browser session. A successful QR-code scan or an old pairing does not guarantee that a later sign-in still uses the same account.
Pay attention to work, school, personal, and family accounts that have similar names. If the account shown on either side is wrong, sign out only after recording the intended account, then sign in with the matching identity. Do not delete unrelated Microsoft accounts from Windows or Android as a shortcut; that can affect other services without repairing the pairing.
Temporarily remove power-saving restrictions
Turn Battery saver off on both the phone and the PC while diagnosing. Microsoft warns that Battery saver can affect connectivity and interfere with important notifications. Re-enable it after testing if the connection works and you have confirmed that your chosen power settings do not suspend Link to Windows in the background.
Run a controlled test after disabling it: leave both apps open long enough for one new message or notification to arrive. If synchronization resumes only while Battery saver is off, the setting is a strong lead. Keep the temporary change limited to testing, then choose the least restrictive setting that still meets your battery needs.
Check Android notification and disturbance settings
If notifications are the missing feature, Android must allow notifications for Link to Windows, and Do not disturb should be off during the test. A notification that never reaches the phone cannot be forwarded to the PC. In Phone Link, also confirm that the notification feature itself is enabled under the app’s settings.

Test with a new notification rather than expecting old alerts to be replayed. Android manufacturers place notification permission and background controls in different menus, so follow the labels on the phone and the current Link to Windows prompts. If notifications work on the phone but not the PC, keep the devices linked and continue with the notification-specific checks.
Confirm the feature toggle on Windows
Phone Link treats messages, photos, calls, notifications, and apps as separate capabilities. Open Phone Link settings and make sure the affected capability is enabled. If the other capabilities continue to update, leave the pairing intact and use the feature-specific troubleshooting route instead of resetting everything.
Feature switches can be turned off during setup, after a permission prompt is dismissed, or when an app update changes its settings. Check the Windows-side switch and the Android permission requested for that capability. Change only the relevant option, then generate fresh content to see whether the change had an effect.
Update both companion apps, then restart cleanly
An app can remain paired yet fail to exchange data after an update is offered on only one side. Check for updates to Phone Link in Windows and to Link to Windows on Android. Install everything offered, then close and reopen both apps.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Open the Windows store or update mechanism used for Phone Link and install any pending Phone Link update.
- Open the Android app store, find Link to Windows, and install its pending update.
- Exit Phone Link on Windows and close Link to Windows on the phone; reopen them and wait for the connection state to refresh.
- If the Android app remains in an updating or recognition state, wait a few minutes. Microsoft notes that recognition can take time after an update.
- If it still does not recover, restart the Android phone and then open both companions again.
Restarting here means closing the companion sessions and, when needed, restarting the phone; it does not mean immediately resetting the account or wiping app data. Give the apps time to finish an update before judging the result. A status indicator that lingers for a few minutes can be normal after installation.
Do not treat a version number copied from an old support page as a permanent requirement. Microsoft can change supported versions and menu labels, so use the current update listings and on-screen instructions.
When same Wi-Fi still does not work: inspect isolation
Two devices can display the same Wi-Fi network name while the router prevents them from talking to each other. Microsoft states: “If both of your devices are using the same Wi-Fi network but you still see an error message, this could be caused by a setting on your router.” The relevant settings are commonly called Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation; they block traffic between clients on the same wireless network.
Guest Wi-Fi is another practical warning sign because guest networks often separate connected devices by design. If the phone and PC are on a guest network, move both to the trusted network only when you are authorized to do so and it is appropriate for the environment. Do not bypass workplace, school, hotel, or landlord network policy yourself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSign in to the router’s administration interface only if you manage that network. Look for an isolation or guest-network setting and follow the router manufacturer’s current instructions for allowing trusted devices to communicate. If it is a work, school, hotel, or landlord-managed network, ask the administrator to check the setting. This evidence points to a configuration check, not a need to buy a replacement router.
If the connection succeeds on a different authorized Wi-Fi network, record that result for the administrator. It shows that the phone and PC can work together, while the original network remains a possible policy or isolation problem. It does not by itself prove that the router hardware is defective.
Separate a feature problem from a broken pairing
Keep the devices paired while you test a single capability. For example, if photos continue to appear but messages do not, the basic account and network path is functioning well enough for at least one feature. Check the following without changing unrelated settings:

- Messages: confirm the messaging feature is enabled in Phone Link and that Android notification or messaging permissions have not been revoked.
- Photos: check the photo feature toggle and allow the Android companion the storage or media access it requests.
- Calls: verify the calls capability and the phone permissions it requires. Follow the current app’s permission prompts rather than relying on an old menu path.
- Notifications: allow Link to Windows notifications and turn off Do not disturb for the test.
- Apps: confirm the apps capability is enabled and that the phone meets any prompt shown by the current Phone Link release.
Use newly generated content for each test. A message sent after the setting change, a new photo, or a fresh notification provides a clearer result than waiting for an old item to reappear. If only one capability remains stale while others continue to move, capture that detail when consulting support.
Phone Link maintains separate feature troubleshooting pages. Use the page that matches the failed capability rather than diagnosing a feature-only fault as a total connection loss.
Reset or relink only after basic checks
Resetting a pairing discards a working authentication path, so reserve it for persistent failures after account, power, permissions, updates, and network isolation have been checked. Before unlinking, make sure you know which Microsoft account should be used and that you can complete the sign-in again.
Microsoft’s documented recovery sequence for a phone that used to connect but no longer reconnects is:
- Update Link to Windows on the Android phone.
- On the phone, sign out of Link to Windows and unlink the device.
- In Phone Link on Windows, open its settings and add the phone again.
- Restart Phone Link if the newly added device does not appear immediately.
If Phone Link asks you to scan a QR code, update both apps first and then follow the on-screen relinking flow. The labels may vary as Microsoft updates the apps; use the current wording shown on your devices rather than an old screenshot.
Do not combine relinking with several unrelated changes. If you change the account, router, permissions, and app state simultaneously, you will not know which action fixed the problem and may make a later support diagnosis harder.
Android Google Account sync is a different system
If the stale data is Gmail, contacts, calendar, or another Google Account service on the Android phone, do not use Phone Link reset steps. Google’s Fix account sync issues guide covers that system. Its checks include:
- Make sure automatic synchronization is enabled for the affected Google Account and service.
- Confirm that the phone has internet access and that you can sign in to the account.
- Install available Android system updates.
- Use Android’s manual account-sync command to force a fresh check when the guide presents that option.
Check whether only one Google service is stale or whether several services have stopped. A single service can indicate a service-specific setting; several services point you toward the account, internet, sign-in, or system-update checks in Google’s procedure. Keep this investigation separate from the desktop companion so a Google Account issue is not mistaken for a lost Phone Link pairing.
Some steps in Google’s guide are limited to Android 14 and later, so the exact menu path depends on the phone’s Android version and manufacturer interface. A Google Account sync problem can coexist with a healthy desktop companion connection; fixing one does not automatically fix the other.

Applying the same reasoning to other Android desktop companions
Third-party companions do not necessarily use Microsoft’s account model, permissions, or menu names. Do not copy Phone Link paths word for word. Instead, preserve the diagnostic separation:
- Record whether the entire connection is down or only one data type is stale.
- Confirm the phone and computer are online, awake, and signed in to the same account required by that product.
- Check Android battery restrictions, notification permissions, and the companion’s per-feature switches.
- Update the desktop and Android components from their official distribution channels, then restart both apps.
- Test whether the local network permits device-to-device communication; guest Wi-Fi and isolation modes often prevent discovery.
- Use that vendor’s reset, unlink, and relink instructions only after the non-destructive checks.
For a non-Microsoft product, identify the vendor’s current support page before changing menu settings. Account names, supported features, and whether mobile data is allowed can differ. Preserve the evidence you have gathered—connection status, affected feature, operating-system versions, and network result—so the vendor can route the case correctly.

The official Phone Link procedures establish these ideas for Microsoft’s product, not for every Android companion. A symptom alone cannot prove whether the phone, computer, account, application, or router is responsible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision sequence
Use this order to avoid losing a pairing unnecessarily:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Name the missing data. Write down whether it is all content or one capability.
- Check the connection state. If the companion says disconnected, continue with account, internet, Wi-Fi, power, and update checks. If it says connected, stay on the feature-specific branch.
- Check accounts and permissions. Compare the signed-in account, allow the needed Android permission, and verify the companion feature toggle.
- Remove temporary restrictions. Disable Battery saver and, for notification tests, Do not disturb.
- Refresh software. Update both sides, close and reopen them, wait for recognition, and restart the phone if necessary.
- Inspect the network. When both devices share Wi-Fi but cannot communicate, have the administrator check Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation.
- Relink as a last resort. Follow the product’s current unlink and add-device sequence; do not improvise by deleting unrelated accounts.
After each step, test the same type of content and record the result. This creates a simple timeline: what was failing, what changed, and whether the result persisted after reopening the apps. If a step has no effect, restore any temporary setting you do not want to keep and continue to the next branch.
What not to buy or replace
These documented remedies involve account selection, app updates, permissions, power settings, router configuration, and relinking. They do not establish a need for a new phone, PC, router, cable, accessory, repair utility, or printed manual. Replacing hardware before completing the software and network checks can add cost without addressing an isolation setting, disabled permission, or mismatched account.
Likewise, avoid paying for an unverified “sync repair” utility or a manual that promises a universal fix. Desktop companions differ, and the official steps are designed around the particular account, app, and operating-system combination in use.
When to escalate
Contact the companion’s official support channel or your network administrator when the current app versions, correct account, permissions, power settings, and network configuration have all been verified and relinking still fails. Include the phone and PC operating-system versions, the exact feature that is stale, the connection status shown by each app, and whether another Wi-Fi network changes the result. This information distinguishes an account or feature defect from a local network policy without claiming a cause that has not been demonstrated.
For a managed network, ask the administrator specifically about Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation and whether client-to-client communication is permitted. For a feature-only failure, identify which other features still work. For Google Account sync, contact Google or the device maker with the Android version and the account-sync result rather than presenting it as a Phone Link failure.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Phone Link say the phone is connected, but one item never appears?
Phone Link has separate capabilities. Check the affected feature’s Windows toggle and the Android permission or notification setting it needs. Keep the pairing intact and use the feature-specific troubleshooting route.
Can Phone Link work over mobile data?
Yes, when the mobile-data option is enabled in Link to Windows settings. Wi-Fi is preferable if you are concerned about consuming a limited data allowance, and Microsoft recommends the same trusted Wi-Fi network for the fastest, most reliable setup.
Both devices use the same Wi-Fi. Why can’t they communicate?
The router may have Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation enabled, or the devices may be on a guest network. Ask the network administrator to inspect those settings. The symptom does not justify replacing the router.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I turn off Battery saver permanently?
No. Turn it off temporarily while diagnosing because Microsoft says it can affect connectivity and notifications. If syncing returns, choose power settings that allow the companion to run in the background, then re-enable battery saving if the connection remains reliable.
Best Value
How long should I wait after updating the apps?
Close and reopen both companions, then allow a few minutes for recognition to complete. If the Android app remains stuck in an update or recognition state, restart the phone and try again. Use the current app’s status and instructions rather than an old version-number requirement.
Will unlinking erase my phone’s messages or photos?
The documented step is a pairing reset, not a recommendation to delete your personal data. Still, unlink only after simpler checks, make sure you know the correct account, and follow the current on-screen relinking instructions.
Is Google Account sync the same as desktop companion sync?
No. Google Account sync covers services such as Gmail, contacts, and calendar on Android. Phone Link is a separate phone-to-Windows connection. Use Google’s account-sync procedure for Google service problems and Phone Link’s procedure for the companion connection.
What information should I give support?
Provide the exact stale feature, whether the apps show connected, phone and PC operating-system versions, app update status, signed-in account situation, permission and Battery saver results, and whether another authorized Wi-Fi network changes the behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I check first when an Android app will not sync to a PC?
Identify whether the whole connection is down or only one feature is stale. Then verify both devices are online, use the required account, are not restricted by Battery saver, and have the needed permissions and feature toggles.
Can a router block syncing even when both devices show the same Wi-Fi?
Yes. Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation can prevent devices on one Wi-Fi network from communicating. Ask the network administrator to inspect the setting, especially on guest or managed networks.
When should I unlink and relink the phone?
Use relinking only after checking accounts, internet, power settings, permissions, updates, and network isolation. Update both apps first, sign out and unlink on Android, add the phone again in the desktop app, and follow any QR-code instructions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if Gmail or contacts are not syncing on Android?
That is Google Account synchronization, not Phone Link. Check automatic account sync, internet access, sign-in ability, Android updates, and the manual-sync option in Google’s Android guidance.
Do I need a new phone, PC, or router?
Not based on these symptoms alone. The documented fixes concern software updates, account selection, permissions, power settings, network isolation, and relinking; complete those checks before considering hardware replacement.
The Bottom Line
First classify the failure: a lost pairing, one Phone Link feature, or Android Google Account sync. For Phone Link, verify internet and trusted Wi-Fi, matching Microsoft accounts, Battery saver, permissions, feature toggles, and current app updates. Restart and wait after updating; investigate Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation when same-network devices cannot communicate. Relink only after those non-destructive checks, and use Google’s separate procedure for Google Account data.
