What the failure looks like—and what it usually means
“The game will not start” can describe several different failures. Identify the exact symptom before changing data, because each points to a different repair path.

Write down the last mod you installed, any load-order change, the character or save that fails, and whether the base game updated just before the problem. That short record prevents guesswork later and helps support staff reproduce the sequence.

Before deleting anything: isolate the change
Check whether an update preceded the failure
A recent game update can change the files or interfaces that Creations and add-ons depend on. Bethesda Support warns that Creations and add-ons may not work properly until their creators update them. If the failure started after an update, incompatibility is a leading explanation even when the mod worked perfectly the day before. Do not assume that reinstalling will make an outdated add-on compatible.
Distinguish a title failure from a mod-service failure
If the game itself reaches its main menu and only the Mods or Creations screen reports a timeout, blank list, or connection error, the title may be healthy. A service outage, an Xbox sign-in problem, or a local network issue can block the catalog while leaving offline gameplay intact. Use the network branch later in this guide instead of repeatedly changing save data.
Follow this recovery workflow in order
1. Fully quit the game
- Press the Xbox button and highlight the affected game in the guide or Home screen.
- Press the Menu button, then choose Quit. Do not leave the title suspended in Quick Resume while testing.
- Wait several seconds so the process closes before restarting the console.
A full quit removes a running session that may still hold a failed mod state. It does not remove mods, saves, or installed content.
2. Power-cycle the Series X
- Hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds, until it shuts down completely.
- Unplug the power cable from the console for at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect power, start the Xbox, and launch the game with all mods disabled.
Bethesda’s stuck-save guidance starts with a power cycle and then deactivating mods. This is a low-risk step: it clears temporary state without touching your profile saves.

3. Disable every mod and Creation
Use the game’s Mods or Creations management screen and deactivate all installed items, not only the newest one. A dependency can remain active after you remove the visible culprit, and a load-order change can expose a conflict between two older items. If the game cannot reach its in-game menu, sign in to the associated Bethesda profile and disable the mods there when that option is available; Bethesda recommends disabling all mods for profile-linked failures.
After disabling everything, restart the game and test the main menu, then a known-good save. If the title now works, the console and base installation are probably sound. Re-enable content later in small groups, with a fresh test after each group, rather than restoring the entire list at once.
4. Clear only the title’s Reserved Space
Reserved Space is local storage that the game uses for mod and add-on data. Clearing it removes that local mod cache; it is not the same as deleting your character or profile save.

- Choose Games, highlight the affected title, and press the Menu button.
- Select Manage Game.
- Open Saved Data, highlight Reserved Space, press Menu, and choose Clear reserved space.
- Confirm the operation, then power-cycle the console once more and launch the title with mods disabled.
Bethesda specifically recommends clearing Reserved Space when a large number of mods prevents a game from loading or starting. If the Reserved Space entry will not clear, power-cycle the Xbox and repeat the same path. Do not select the profile or account save shown beside Reserved Space.

Know exactly which data option you are selecting

Bethesda’s warning is simple: when clearing Reserved Space, do not delete the actual save file by mistake. Read the item name and scope on the confirmation screen before accepting it.
Test saves without sacrificing the only working copy
Start with an earlier or unmodded save
If the game reaches its menus after the cache cleanup, load an earlier save made before the newest mod or load-order change. An unmodded character is an even cleaner test. Keep the original failing save untouched while you test; do not overwrite it with a new autosave until you know the title can load reliably.
Interpret the result carefully:
- If an earlier unmodded save loads, the failing character probably depends on removed or incompatible content. Reinstalling the base game will not recreate that dependency.
- If no save loads but the menus work, the local save state or the mod cache remains suspect. Move to the cloud-save precautions below.
- If even the main menu crashes with all mods disabled, the problem is broader than one character. Continue with the installation and service checks.
Delete a local save only when cloud recovery is available
When local data appears corrupted, use the Xbox saved-data management screen to remove the console copy first. Bethesda states that Delete from console removes the local copy and allows it to be retrieved from the cloud the next time you play. This is fundamentally different from Delete everywhere, which removes the save from the console, cloud, and other consoles.

- Record the save slot or character name you intend to test; do not select the entire profile by accident.
- Choose the local-console deletion option, not Delete everywhere.
- Start the game and allow synchronization to finish before opening the save menu.
- Test the recovered copy with mods still disabled.
Synchronization can present a conflict if the console and cloud contain different versions. Read the dates and locations shown by the Xbox prompt. If you are unsure which copy is valid, cancel rather than selecting Delete everywhere; a support agent can help you assess the conflict.

When Mods or Creations show a connection error
A title that launches normally but cannot open its mod catalog needs a network diagnosis, not immediate save deletion. Use these checks in order:
- Check the current Xbox service status and Bethesda service notices for an outage or maintenance.
- On the Xbox, open Settings → General → Network settings and run Test network connection.
- Restart the router and wait for it to reconnect completely.
- Try a wired connection or a different network, such as a trusted mobile hotspot, to separate a home-network problem from a service problem.
- Sign out and back in to the Xbox and Bethesda accounts, then retry the Mods or Creations menu.
These actions restore access to the catalog or authentication service; they cannot repair a broken load order. If the catalog works but the game crashes as soon as a save loads, return to the mod-disable and Reserved Space steps.

Bethesda’s startup guidance recommends a complete uninstall and reinstall when clearing Reserved Space does not resolve the launch failure. Treat this as a title-file repair, not a universal reset.
- Verify that all mods and Creations are disabled and that you understand which saves are local and which are in the cloud.
- Open My Games & Apps → Games, highlight the title, press Menu, and choose Manage Game and Add-ons.
- Uninstall the game and its installed add-ons as appropriate for your edition.
- Restart the Series X, then reinstall from your library or disc.
- Launch the clean installation before restoring any mods. Test the main menu and an unmodded or earlier save first.
Do not immediately reinstall every Creation. A clean launch followed by a crash after one particular add-on returns is strong evidence that the add-on or its dependency needs an update. If the clean installation still fails before any mod is enabled, the cause may be service-related, account-related, or outside the title files.
Re-enable content without recreating the crash
Use a controlled load-order test
- Keep a known-good unmodded save as your baseline.
- Enable one mod or one small, known-compatible group.
- Restart the game and load a test save.
- Play long enough to reach the area or feature affected by the mod.
- Record which group was active when the failure returned, then disable that group before testing another.
Do not remove a mod from an active save if its description warns that removal can damage the character. Some saves permanently reference scripts, items, or world changes. If a creator provides a required uninstall procedure, follow it; otherwise use a backup or earlier save for experiments.
Account for updates and dependencies
After a game update, wait for the creator of each dependent add-on to publish a compatible version. A mod that has not changed can still fail because the base game’s executable, scripts, or data formats changed. Keep the game and add-ons on a compatible version combination, and avoid changing several foundational mods at the same time.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch

When to escalate beyond the game
Escalate when a clean, unmodded launch still fails after a reinstall, when multiple unrelated games show the same behavior, or when the Xbox cannot complete updates or sign-in. Microsoft’s Series X service guidance includes checking for updates and then testing whether a disc or digital game launches after service work. Record the error text, game edition, update timing, whether the title reaches its menu, and which data options you used.
Contact Xbox Support for console, account, synchronization, or platform-service symptoms. Contact the game publisher for a reproducible crash tied to a specific Creation, save, or post-update compatibility problem. Include the mod name and version, load-order position, save slot, and the exact point at which the game stops responding. Never send a support agent a save deletion confirmation until you understand whether it means local-only deletion or Delete everywhere.
Preventing the next launch failure
- Keep at least one recent save made with no mods active as a recovery baseline.
- After installing or updating a mod, launch the game and test before adding another.
- Read dependency and update notes, especially after a base-game patch.
- Avoid removing foundational mods from a character that already depends on them; use an earlier save for testing.
- When a crash begins, stop changing the load order and write down the last known-good configuration.
- Use Reserved Space cleanup for the affected title only, and verify the selected item before confirming.
- Reserve Delete everywhere for a deliberate, fully understood decision—not troubleshooting.
The practical rule is to start with reversible changes that target the changed state, then move toward save recovery, installation repair, and support escalation only as the evidence demands.
