How to troubleshoot an old phone that won’t connect to PhoneBot

If an old phone will not connect to PhoneBot, first determine which link is failing: the Android application on the phone, the Wi‑Fi path to PhoneBot’s onboard computer, the onboard computer’s connection to the robot, or one feature such as ARCore SLAM. PhoneBot’s published architecture uses an Android app and Wi‑Fi for high-level commands and telemetry; it does not document a universal minimum Android version, router band, permission checklist, or reset sequence.

Use the sequence below to separate those failure points without assuming that generic Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi advice is an official PhoneBot fix. The project’s October 2026 paper tested four Android phones, but that small sample is evidence of those demonstrations—not a guarantee that every older handset will work.

What “won’t connect” means in PhoneBot

PhoneBot is an open humanoid robot platform that reuses a smartphone for sensing and computing. The phone runs the project’s Android application. The phone and a small onboard computer exchange high-level commands and telemetry over Wi‑Fi, while the onboard computer communicates with the robot’s actuators. This architecture is described by the authors in the PhoneBot preprint.

That arrangement creates several different symptoms that are often described with the same phrase:

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  • The app does not start or cannot see a robot: the phone/app layer or the Wi‑Fi path may be at fault.
  • The app appears connected, but movement or telemetry does not work: the phone may have reached the network while the onboard computer, robot software, or actuator path is not responding.
  • Basic control works but mapping or a vision feature fails: the network may be healthy and the problem may be a feature-specific dependency such as ARCore SLAM.
  • The phone works intermittently: power management, an unstable wireless path, an overloaded phone, or a project-side software issue could be involved; the published paper does not identify a single cause.

Treat the symptom as a diagnostic starting point rather than evidence that the handset is simply “too old.”

What PhoneBot’s published evidence actually confirms

The current PhoneBot application described by Ruochen Hou, Quanyou Wang, Daniel Koh and Dennis W. Hong is Android-based. The authors write: “The current PhoneBot application is an Android app that uses these built-in devices directly.” The same paper describes Wi‑Fi exchange between the smartphone and the onboard computer. Read the architecture and component description in the 2026 arXiv preprint.

The reported evaluation used four phones:

Phone named in the evaluation What the paper reports What that does—and does not—establish
Honor 9 Core application functions were handled; ARCore SLAM did not work in the United States because Google services were unavailable on that Huawei device. Shows a region- and device-specific feature exception. It does not show that every Honor 9, or every other feature, will fail.
Moto G 2025 Core application functions were handled. One demonstrated Android model, not a universal compatibility minimum.
Samsung Galaxy A16 5G Core application functions were handled. One demonstrated Android model, not proof that all Samsung phones or all network configurations work.
Moto G 2024 Core application functions were handled. One demonstrated Android model; availability or compatibility in a later build is not guaranteed.

These are the only four handset examples identified in the technical source. The study does not establish a minimum Android release, a minimum processor or memory specification, a required Wi‑Fi frequency, or a complete list of supported models. A report published by Tech Xplore on 8 October 2026 also describes current movement control as trained for flat terrain, notes that the robot has no arms, and says speech recognition and language processing rely on an external laptop. Those are platform limitations, not established explanations for a phone connection failure; the report is available at Tech Xplore.

Before changing anything, classify the failure

The following sequence is an architecture-based troubleshooting framework, not a procedure published by the PhoneBot maintainers. It prevents you from changing several variables at once.

  1. Write down the exact symptom. Record whether the app crashes, shows no robot, reports a connection error, connects without telemetry, accepts commands without movement, or fails only when a particular feature is opened.
  2. Capture the exact error text. Take a screenshot or copy the message, including capitalization and any error code. “Can’t connect” is less useful than the full wording.
  3. Record the environment. Note the phone model, Android version, PhoneBot app version, approximate battery level, and whether the onboard computer is powered. These details are sensible support information; the paper does not prescribe a formal checklist.
  4. Repeat once without changing settings. A single transient failure can look like an incompatibility. Record whether the result is repeatable and whether the symptom changes after the robot is fully powered.

Do not begin by buying another phone, changing router bands, enabling developer options, or performing a factory reset. None of those actions is identified as a PhoneBot requirement or official remedy in the published material.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Step 1: verify the phone and application layer

Confirm that the handset is Android

The application described in the paper is an Android app. If the old handset is not an Android phone, it is outside the platform described by that source. If it is Android, write down the exact model rather than relying on a retail name; closely related models can have different radios, operating-system builds, or Google-service availability.

Confirm that the PhoneBot app is installed and launches

Open the application and observe the first failure point. If it closes immediately, never reaches its connection screen, or displays an operating-system compatibility warning, the problem occurs before the Wi‑Fi link can be tested. Keep the crash text and Android version for the project maintainers. The preprint does not state a minimum Android version or a required app version, so do not infer one from the phone’s age.

Check ordinary phone conditions without inventing a PhoneBot checklist

Make sure the phone has enough charge to remain awake during a test, is not in airplane mode, and can use Wi‑Fi for another ordinary purpose. These checks establish whether the handset’s radio is functioning; they are not documented PhoneBot-specific requirements. Avoid claiming that a particular permission, battery setting, background-data toggle, or developer option is mandatory unless current project documentation says so.

Separate an app failure from a connection failure

If the app reaches its normal control or status interface but does not discover the robot, record that as an app-to-robot communication symptom. If the app cannot reach its own start screen, reinstalling or resetting may affect data, but the published paper gives no official reinstall or reset recipe. Preserve logs and screenshots before removing the app.

Step 2: inspect the documented Wi‑Fi path

PhoneBot’s paper confirms Wi‑Fi communication between the phone and the onboard computer, but it does not specify whether a particular build uses a home router, a robot-created network, a fixed IP address, a discovery protocol, or a required 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band. It also does not publish router settings or diagnostic commands. The checks below therefore test the documented path without presenting an unverified network arrangement as official.

Check whether the phone has a usable Wi‑Fi connection

  1. Open the phone’s Wi‑Fi controls and note the network name and connection state.
  2. Confirm that Wi‑Fi remains connected when the PhoneBot app is in the foreground.
  3. Test the same radio with a simple, non-sensitive network service. If Wi‑Fi drops generally, solve the phone or network problem before attributing it to PhoneBot.

Do not assume that the phone and robot must be on your household network, that they must be on the same subnet, or that one radio band is required. Those details are unresolved in the available technical description.

Check the robot side

Verify that the onboard computer is powered and has completed its normal startup before judging the phone connection. Look for the computer’s own status indication or startup output if your build provides one. The paper establishes that this computer is the intermediary between the phone and actuators; it does not provide a universal LED meaning, boot time, address, or recovery command. Record what you observe instead of guessing.

Use a controlled one-variable test

Change only one environmental variable at a time—for example, move the phone closer to the robot, then repeat from the original position. A changed result suggests a radio or environment issue, but it does not prove a specific band, range, or router fault. If the symptom is identical in both locations, preserve that observation for support. Avoid simultaneously changing the router, app version, phone settings, and robot software; that destroys the comparison.

Recognize a network-layer symptom

If the app consistently cannot see the robot while the phone’s Wi‑Fi works elsewhere and the onboard computer is powered, report the failure as “phone-to-onboard-computer discovery or communication,” not as “bad actuators.” If the app shows connection but no telemetry, the link may be only partially established or the onboard software may not be responding. The architecture supports this distinction, but the paper does not provide a tested set of network error codes.

Step 3: distinguish connection from robot response

A phone can reach the onboard computer while the robot still fails to move. Test the layers in order:

  1. Phone interface: does the app accept the intended control input?
  2. Telemetry: does any status data return to the app?
  3. Onboard processing: does the computer acknowledge or process the command?
  4. Actuation: do the robot’s actuators respond?

Only the first two layers are directly about the phone connection. If telemetry is present but an actuator does not respond, investigate the robot-side software, power, wiring, or actuator path using the build documentation. The preprint reports a design with 13 actuators and an approximate hardware cost of $400 excluding the smartphone, but those figures do not identify a phone-network fault or a repair procedure.

For safety, keep the robot supported or otherwise prevented from falling while testing movement. The available sources do not provide a universal emergency-stop method, so use the shutdown procedure supplied with your particular build rather than inventing one.

Step 4: isolate feature-specific failures such as ARCore SLAM

Do not treat a failed mapping or augmented-reality feature as proof that the entire phone cannot connect. The four-phone evaluation reports core application use across the listed devices, with one named exception: ARCore SLAM on the Honor 9 in the United States because Google services were unavailable on that Huawei device. That finding is specific to the handset, region, and feature.

If basic control works but SLAM does not

  1. Record that basic application communication works.
  2. Identify the exact feature that fails and capture its error message.
  3. Check whether the phone’s region and Google-service availability match the conditions in which that feature is expected to run.
  4. Ask the project maintainers whether the current app still uses the same ARCore dependency and whether your model is supported.

Do not generalize the Honor 9 result to all Huawei phones, all countries, or all PhoneBot functions. Conversely, do not conclude that a phone that lacks ARCore SLAM support cannot perform the platform’s other sensing or control tasks.

If every feature fails

Return to the app and Wi‑Fi stages. A feature-specific dependency cannot explain an app that never launches or a phone that never reaches the robot’s network path.

Which older Android phones are a reasonable comparison?

The project’s four-device test is useful as a reference, not as a buying guide. All four named models handled the reported core application functions, while the Honor 9 had the documented United States ARCore SLAM exception. No exhaustive compatibility list or universal minimum specification is published.

Decision question Evidence-based interpretation What remains unknown
Is the phone Android? Android is the platform identified by the paper. The minimum Android release is not stated.
Is the exact model in the four-phone evaluation? Honor 9, Moto G 2025, Samsung Galaxy A16 5G and Moto G 2024 are named test examples. Testing one model does not guarantee every software build, region or later app version.
Does the requested function use ARCore SLAM? Feature dependencies can differ from core control; the Honor 9 result demonstrates that distinction. The paper does not provide a complete ARCore device matrix.
Will replacing the phone fix a connection error? Not established. A network, onboard-computer or app problem can persist on another handset. No universal replacement threshold is given.

If you already own one of the tested models, use its documented evaluation status as context, not as a guarantee. If you are considering a replacement, first reproduce the failure and collect the model, Android version, app version and error text. A new handset is a rational fallback only after the current phone is shown to be the limiting layer or the maintainers confirm a compatibility requirement.

What not to assume—and why

  • “It must use Bluetooth.” The published architecture names Wi‑Fi between the phone and onboard computer. Do not substitute Bluetooth pairing instructions for that documented path.
  • “The robot must be on 2.4 GHz” or “5 GHz.” The paper does not state a required frequency.
  • “Grant this exact permission and it will work.” No complete permission checklist is published.
  • “A factory reset is the official fix.” No reset or re-pair procedure is documented in the cited sources.
  • “Any old Android phone is supported.” The evidence covers four models and does not establish universal compatibility.
  • “The phone is defective because the robot does not move.” A connected phone can still be affected by onboard software, power, actuator or terrain limitations.

These cautions are important because an irreversible reset or a phone purchase can erase useful evidence without addressing the actual failing layer.

Prepare a useful support report

When the failure persists, send the maintainers a compact report that lets them reproduce the same layer of the problem:

  • Exact phone make and model, including regional variant if known.
  • Android version and PhoneBot app version.
  • Country or region, especially when a Google-service or ARCore feature is involved.
  • Whether the app launches, whether the phone has Wi‑Fi, and whether the robot’s onboard computer is powered.
  • The exact on-screen error text, screenshots, and the time of the failure.
  • Whether the symptom is “cannot discover,” “connects but no telemetry,” “commands accepted but no movement,” or “one feature fails.”
  • What changed between a working and non-working attempt, if anything.

Ask for the current setup instructions and compatibility guidance rather than asserting that a generic Android fix should apply. The preprint was posted on 6 October 2026, and project materials can change after publication; the current maintainer guidance should control any app-version, permission, router or reset instruction.

When a phone replacement is justified

Replace the phone only when the evidence points to the handset itself: for example, the app cannot run on that Android build, a required feature is unavailable on the device, or the maintainers confirm that your model or software version is unsupported. The four tested phones—Honor 9, Moto G 2025, Samsung Galaxy A16 5G and Moto G 2024—show what the authors evaluated, but they do not define a guaranteed shopping list or a universal minimum.

If you compare a replacement, prioritize an Android handset that can run the current PhoneBot app, has the sensors required by the feature you need, and is supported in your region. Confirm those points with current project documentation before spending money. A replacement cannot correct a powered-off onboard computer, a robot-side software fault, or an incorrectly configured network path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A concise decision tree

  1. App will not launch: record the crash or compatibility message, Android version and app version; seek current project guidance.
  2. App launches but cannot discover PhoneBot: verify Wi‑Fi on the phone and power on the onboard computer; document the symptom without assuming a band, router or discovery method.
  3. App connects but no telemetry appears: report a partial phone-to-onboard-computer connection and investigate the onboard software path.
  4. Telemetry appears but movement fails: treat it as a robot-side command, power, actuator or safety issue rather than automatically replacing the phone.
  5. Only SLAM or another named feature fails: investigate that feature’s device and regional dependencies, including the ARCore/Google-services exception reported for the Honor 9 in the United States.
  6. No layer is clear: send the complete support report and current project details to the maintainers before performing destructive resets or buying another handset.

Bottom line

Start with the architecture: Android app, Wi‑Fi link to the onboard computer, then robot-side response. The published evidence confirms that core functions were demonstrated on four Android phones, but it does not promise compatibility for every old handset or publish a universal setup recipe. Classify the exact symptom, test one layer at a time, separate feature failures from network failures, and use current PhoneBot documentation for any version-, permission-, router- or reset-specific instruction.
