If your iPhone charges slowly on a wireless pad, first check that it is centered and actually charging, then test without its case or anything between the phone and pad. Next check the charger and power adapter, temperature, wired accessories, and battery settings. Slow charging—especially above about 80%—does not automatically mean the charger is faulty.
Start with placement and the charging indicator
- Connect the pad to the power source recommended by its manufacturer and place it on a stable, level surface.
- Set the iPhone face up at the charger’s indicated spot, usually centered. Wait a few seconds and check for the charging icon.
- If the icon does not appear, reposition the phone and check the charger’s cable and power connection.
iPhone 8 and later support Qi-certified wireless charging. Apple says many Qi-certified chargers charge iPhone at up to 7.5 W, though functionality and performance vary by charger. Apple’s wireless charging guidance explains the basic setup.

Remove cases and objects that interfere
Take off a thick, metal, or battery case and retest. Remove cards, wallets, magnetic mounts, and other objects from between the iPhone and the charging surface. Magnets or the charging field can also damage magnetic strips or RFID chips in cards and badges, so keep them away from the pad.

Check the charger standard and adapter
A charger can work correctly yet be slower than expected. Apple says wireless chargers providing less than 10 W, including Qi1-certified chargers, may take longer than expected. For faster wireless charging, Apple recommends a MagSafe Charger or a Qi2-certified wireless charger. The iPhone model, charger, adapter, and system conditions all affect the result. For MagSafe, do not assume every pad or adapter delivers the highest advertised rate. Apple lists combinations that can reach up to 25 W peak for certain newer iPhones with a 30 W-or-higher adapter and specified MagSafe charger models; other supported iPhones have different maximums and adapter requirements. Actual power varies with model and system conditions. Check Apple’s MagSafe compatibility and adapter details for the exact iPhone and charger.

On iOS 18 or later, “Slow Charger” may appear in Settings > Battery or on the Lock Screen. Apple says this means a higher-wattage charger could improve the charging experience; the message alone does not establish that the iPhone or charger is defective. Apple explains the Slow Charger indication.

Wireless charging can warm the iPhone. If it gets too warm, iOS may slow or pause charging; very cold conditions can also slow or temporarily disable it. Move the phone and pad out of direct sunlight or a hot space, then let the iPhone return gradually to a comfortable temperature. Apple recommends charging between 0° and 35° C (32° and 95° F). If the phone tends to heat up while charging, try removing its case.

“Charging On Hold” can mean iOS is waiting for the iPhone to return to a normal temperature before charging resumes. Thermal protection is automatic. See Apple’s guidance on thermally limited charging.
Retest without wired accessories or intensive use
Disconnect USB-C or Lightning accessories while charging wirelessly. Apple says wired accessories can trigger a regulatory power limit. Graphics-intensive apps, games, camera features, and high-quality video can also reduce charging speed, so leave them closed during a fair test. Apple’s charge-speed guidance describes these factors.

Check whether battery management explains the slowdown
Charging can slow after approximately 80% as iPhone manages heat and battery stress. Optimized Battery Charging may delay charging beyond 80% based on your routine, and iPhone 15 models and later can have a user-set charge limit. Check Settings > Battery for the charge status, any charging hold, and the configured limit before treating a slowdown near that level as a pad problem. Apple describes these behaviors in its iPhone charging guidance and charge-speed guidance.

Isolate the cause one change at a time
- Center the iPhone on the pad and confirm the charging icon appears.
- Remove the case and any objects between phone and charger.
- Connect the pad using the manufacturer-recommended power adapter.
- Let the setup cool or warm to a suitable temperature.
- Disconnect wired accessories and avoid intensive use while testing.
- Check Settings > Battery for “Slow Charger,” a charging hold, or a charge limit.
If slow charging persists across a compatible charger and suitable power source under cool, undisturbed conditions, contact Apple or the charger maker. Have the exact iPhone model, charger model, adapter output, iOS version, and battery percentage at which the slowdown occurs ready. Apple does not specify a universal charge-time threshold for diagnosing a faulty wireless pad, so elapsed minutes alone cannot establish that it has failed.
