If your eSIM will not activate or shows “No Service” abroad, first identify whether the profile failed to install, the line is not registering on a network, or the phone has signal but no data. Then check the plan, line selection, roaming and provider-specific settings—in that order. Avoid deleting or reinstalling a profile until your provider confirms its instructions, because redownload rules vary.
Identify what is failing
Note the exact message on screen before changing settings. The symptom helps narrow down the cause:

- The eSIM profile is missing or installation is stuck: focus on device compatibility, setup conditions and whether the profile was issued correctly.
- The profile is installed but says “No Service”: check destination coverage, whether the line is enabled, roaming eligibility and network registration.
- The phone shows signal but has no internet: check which SIM is selected for mobile data, that line’s roaming setting, and the provider’s APN instructions.
Menu names vary by phone and operating-system version. Look for the cellular or mobile-service settings for the eSIM line, even if your menu labels differ from the paths below.

Check setup requirements before trying again
Confirm that your exact phone model supports eSIM, that it is unlocked if your provider requires an unlocked device, and that your plan is active and covers your destination. The provider must also support your device and the destination. Apple says eSIM setup on iPhone generally requires a Wi-Fi network or hotspot and a compatible, current version of iOS; some eSIM-only iPhone models in certain countries and regions can activate without Wi-Fi. Use Wi-Fi or a hotspot for setup if required, and install the latest operating-system update available for your phone. Don’t repeatedly scan the QR code, delete the profile or attempt another installation until the provider confirms what to do: providers’ rules for installing or redownloading an eSIM can differ.
Refresh an installed line that will not activate
On iPhone, check Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions) and see whether the plan appears. Confirm its line is turned on. You can then refresh the connection using this sequence:

- Turn the eSIM line off, wait briefly, then turn it back on.
- Turn Airplane Mode on and off to prompt the phone to reconnect.
- Restart the phone.
- Check for a carrier settings update. Apple’s setup guidance also recommends contacting the provider if setup still fails.
If the plan does not appear in cellular settings, or activation remains stuck, the provider may need to check the profile or account rather than having you repeat installation.

Check destination coverage and roaming eligibility
Verify that the destination is included in your plan and that the provider permits the line to roam there. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line if the provider’s instructions require it. Roaming terms vary by plan, so check them before enabling roaming on your home SIM; it may have different charges or allowances. Orange Travel’s eSIM help guidance is one example of provider-specific instructions, not a universal rule for every eSIM.

Try a fresh network registration
Toggle Airplane Mode or restart the phone to prompt it to register again. If automatic network selection does not work, try selecting a network manually in the eSIM line’s cellular settings. Choose only a network that the eSIM provider identifies as a supported partner. For example, Jio’s roaming guidance describes provider-specific troubleshooting; a network that appears in a list is not necessarily available to every plan.
Some carriers may suggest changing the preferred network mode, such as switching to LTE. Treat that as carrier-specific advice, not a universal eSIM requirement, and follow your own provider’s device-specific instructions. T-Mobile’s network-mode guidance illustrates why the appropriate setting depends on the carrier and device.

Fix signal with no mobile data
Select the eSIM as the data line
On a dual-SIM phone, check that the travel eSIM is selected for cellular data. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data (the corresponding label may be Mobile Data) and choose the eSIM. An iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time, so having a second line enabled does not mean it is carrying data. Apple explains the relevant dual-SIM controls in its Dual SIM and eSIM guidance.

Check roaming for the correct line
If the provider requires roaming, enable data roaming on the eSIM itself—not automatically on every line. Confirm the plan’s terms first, especially if your home SIM is also enabled, to avoid unexpected charges on that line.

Verify the APN with the provider
The Access Point Name (APN) is provider-specific. Check the eSIM provider’s setup instructions and compare the APN on the phone with the value it gives you. Do not copy an APN from a different carrier or travel eSIM; an incorrect value can leave a connected line without working data.
Contact the provider when settings do not resolve it
Contact the carrier or eSIM provider if the line remains unprovisioned, the plan appears active but cannot register, no supported network is available, or the provider’s settings do not restore service. Ask support to confirm that the plan is activated, the destination is covered, roaming is included or enabled, and the line is provisioned for a supported network partner. Apple also recommends contacting the provider when iPhone eSIM setup still fails after its troubleshooting steps.
Have these details ready so support can investigate the right line and location:
- The exact on-screen error or status.
- Your destination and phone model.
- Your account or phone number details, as appropriate for that provider.
- The device’s IMEI or EID, if support requests it.
- Whether the profile is absent, stuck activating, showing “No Service,” or connected without data.
If you ultimately need a different plan or device, first establish which requirement is missing. Compare destination coverage, supported partner networks, data-only versus voice and SMS service, activation timing, roaming requirements, APN instructions and support availability. A replacement phone is relevant only if your current device is incompatible or locked; verify the exact model and regional compatibility before buying. A new travel eSIM may address missing destination coverage, but it will not fix an account-provisioning issue with the existing line.
