How to troubleshoot an Amazon Echo that won’t connect to Wi‑Fi

If your Amazon Echo will not connect, first test another phone, tablet, or computer on the same Wi‑Fi. If that device also fails, restart the router and investigate an internet-service outage; if other devices work, focus on the Echo’s placement, saved password, network band, and stored Wi‑Fi profile.

Work through the checks below in order. They start with reversible changes and reserve a factory reset for cases where restarting and updating the saved network do not work. Amazon’s instructions differ by Echo generation and by whether the device has a screen, so use the model-specific reset page before pressing reset buttons.

Use this quick diagnosis first

What you observe Most useful first check What it suggests
Only the Echo is offline Recheck the password, move the Echo closer to the router, and try the other available Wi‑Fi band. The saved Echo settings, signal conditions, or compatibility are more likely than a full internet outage.
A phone, tablet, or computer on the same Wi‑Fi is also offline Restart the router. If several devices remain offline, contact your internet service provider. The problem may be the router, the local network, or the internet connection rather than the Echo.
The Echo was working and the Wi‑Fi password changed Update the Echo’s saved Wi‑Fi network in the Alexa app, or use the on-device settings if it has a screen. The Echo is still trying to use the old credentials.
The Echo fails during first-time setup Update the Alexa app, restart the Echo, then try setup through a phone hotspot if normal checks fail. A setup or home-router problem is possible; the hotspot test provides another comparison.

Amazon’s general support page recommends keeping an Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the wireless router and away from interference. That distance is a placement recommendation, not a guarantee that every connection problem is caused by range. Amazon Customer Service’s Echo Wi‑Fi troubleshooting guide lists the same sequence of checks.

1. Establish whether the Echo or the network is at fault

Test another device on the same network

Use a phone, tablet, or computer in the same location and connect it to the exact Wi‑Fi network shown for the Echo. Open a webpage or another service that requires internet access. Do not use mobile data for this test, because a phone that silently switches to cellular can make a failed Wi‑Fi network look healthy.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

If the other device also fails

Restart the wireless router. Amazon also advises unplugging the Echo for 30 seconds and plugging it back in when other devices cannot connect. Wait for the router’s normal status lights and give the Echo time to boot before testing again. If multiple household devices still have connectivity problems, Amazon’s setup guidance says to contact your internet service provider (ISP), because the fault may be upstream of the Echo and router. See Amazon’s “Echo Device Can’t Connect to Wi‑Fi During Setup” instructions for that escalation advice.

If other devices work normally

Leave the router alone for the moment and troubleshoot the Echo. Confirm that you are selecting the intended home network, check whether the Wi‑Fi password was recently changed, and temporarily disconnect a few unnecessary devices. A crowded network can be a useful diagnostic clue, although it does not prove that congestion is the root cause.

2. Reposition the Echo and remove obvious interference

For testing, place the Echo in the same room as the router or within Amazon’s recommended maximum of 30 feet (10 meters). Keep it in an open location rather than inside a cabinet or behind dense furniture. Move it away from potential sources of radio interference, including microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics. After moving it, wait for the device to finish starting and try the connection again.

If the Echo connects near the router but fails in its normal location, range or interference is implicated. If it fails even beside the router while other devices remain online, continue with the saved-network and band checks instead of assuming that distance is the only problem.

3. Verify the password and reduce competing network use

Check the credentials carefully

Wi‑Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Re-enter the password rather than relying on an old entry, especially if your router was replaced, renamed, or reconfigured. A password change does not automatically update an Echo’s stored network profile; you must run the Wi‑Fi update process described below.

Temporarily lower network load

Pause large downloads, video streams, game updates, or other heavy activity and turn off a few connected devices for a test. This is a diagnostic step, not a requirement to keep your home network empty. If the Echo connects only after other devices are removed, investigate the router’s capacity and configuration; if it does not, restore the devices and continue.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

4. Try the other Wi‑Fi band

Many routers broadcast separate names (SSIDs) for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. If yours does, connect the Echo to the other band and test it again. Amazon says Echo devices support common 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz home Wi‑Fi using the 802.11a/b/g/n standards. Its guidance recommends trying the other band rather than declaring one band universally better. Amazon’s Wi‑Fi settings article documents those supported network types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Echo cannot connect to an ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) network. Amazon states: “Echo devices can’t connect to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) networks.” That means a temporary device-to-device network is not an alternative to a normal home router network.

Band selection is a comparison test. A successful connection on one SSID and failure on the other gives you a practical workaround and points to a band-specific router setting, signal condition, or compatibility issue. It does not establish that every Echo should always use 2.4 GHz or always use 5 GHz.

5. Refresh the Echo’s saved Wi‑Fi settings

Echo devices without a screen

Use the Alexa mobile app and follow Amazon’s current path:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Choose the affected Echo.
  4. Open Device Settings.
  5. Select Change or remove a Wi‑Fi network.
  6. Follow the prompts to select the correct network and enter its password.
  7. If the desired network is not listed, select Join another Wi‑Fi Network and continue through the prompts.

The labels above are the route Amazon publishes for Echo devices without a screen. If your app shows a slightly different label, select the device’s network or Wi‑Fi settings rather than creating a new device entry. The official steps are at Update the Wi‑Fi Settings for Your Echo Device.

Echo devices with a screen

Screen-equipped models have separate on-device instructions. Use the Echo’s own settings and the model-specific directions in Amazon’s support material instead of applying the app-only route above. The distinction matters because the controls and wording differ between screen and non-screen devices.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

6. Handle a first-time setup failure

Prepare the setup

  1. Update the Alexa app on the phone or tablet you are using for setup.
  2. Restart the Echo by unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in.
  3. Repeat the network, distance, interference, password, and band checks in the earlier sections.

During setup, keep the phone close enough to the Echo and router for the app to complete its handoff. If the normal home network still fails, try the hotspot test below.

Use a phone hotspot as a diagnostic fallback

  1. Enable a Wi‑Fi hotspot on a phone with a working cellular data connection.
  2. In the Alexa setup flow, select the hotspot’s network name and enter its password.
  3. Complete setup only if the Echo accepts that connection; then return to the Alexa app and configure the intended home Wi‑Fi.

Amazon suggests hotspot setup after the ordinary checks fail. This is a diagnostic inference: if the Echo can complete setup through the hotspot, the home router, its settings, or the home internet path becomes more suspect; if it cannot, the Echo or setup process remains suspect. A hotspot can consume cellular data, so disable it when the test is complete.

Escalate when the whole home is affected

If several devices cannot reach the internet, stop repeating Echo setup and contact the ISP after restarting the router. An Echo cannot repair an outage or a failing broadband connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Restart before considering a factory reset

Restart is reversible

A restart means removing power, waiting 30 seconds, and reconnecting the Echo. It does not intentionally erase the device’s personal information, routines, or smart-home associations. Allow the boot process to finish before judging whether Wi‑Fi has returned.

Factory reset has consequences

A factory reset returns the Echo to setup state. Amazon warns that reset choices vary by generation and device type. On some Echo (3rd or 4th Generation) models, one reset option keeps smart-home connections while a factory-reset option erases personal information and device and smart-home connections. Choose carefully and expect to configure the Echo again afterward.

Do not apply a button combination from a different model. Amazon provides separate instructions for Echo generations and screen devices, including:

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

The first-generation procedure uses a reset button. Screen devices may use physical buttons or on-screen menus, and menu wording can vary by model. Identify the exact Echo generation before resetting, and use the matching Amazon page. If the Echo still has a working connection, note any custom settings and smart-home relationships before erasing them.

A complete decision path

Use this order to avoid jumping to a destructive step:

  1. Connect another device to the same Wi‑Fi and test internet access.
  2. If that device fails, restart the router; unplug and reconnect the Echo after 30 seconds. Contact the ISP if several devices remain offline.
  3. If other devices work, move the Echo within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router and away from microwaves, baby monitors, and other electronics.
  4. Confirm the current Wi‑Fi password and temporarily reduce the number of active devices.
  5. If separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs exist, try the other one. Do not use an ad-hoc or peer-to-peer network.
  6. Update the saved Wi‑Fi profile in Alexa for a non-screen Echo, or use the model’s on-device Wi‑Fi controls for a screen Echo.
  7. For first-time setup, update Alexa, restart the Echo, and test a phone hotspot if the home network still fails.
  8. Only after these checks, consult the exact model reset instructions and decide whether a factory reset is justified.

Common symptoms and the appropriate fix

“The Echo worked until I changed the router password.”

Use Devices → Echo → Device Settings → Change or remove a Wi‑Fi network in Alexa for a device without a screen. Enter the new password and select Join another Wi‑Fi Network if necessary.

“My phone is online, but the Echo is not.”

Move the Echo closer, remove interference, try the other router band, and refresh its saved network. A phone being online proves that the network is available in general, not that the Echo’s stored credentials or radio conditions are correct.

“Nothing in the house can get online.”

Restart the router and check the connection on more than one device. If the outage persists, contact the ISP instead of repeatedly resetting the Echo.

“The Echo cannot see my network during setup.”

Check that the router is broadcasting a normal 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz home network rather than an ad-hoc network, move the Echo closer, update Alexa, and try the hotspot fallback. If the hotspot works, return to the router’s settings and home connection.

  • MEET ECHO SPOT - A sleek smart alarm clock with Alexa and big vibrant sound. Ready to help you wake up, wind down, and so much more.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE SMART CLOCK - See time, weather, and song titles at a glance, control smart home devices, and more. Personalize your display with your favorite clock face and fun colors.
  • BIG VIBRANT SOUND - Enjoy rich sound with clear vocals and deep bass. Just ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, and audiobooks. See song titles and touch to control your music.
  • EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.

“I am unsure which reset instructions apply.”

Do not guess from a generic button combination. Identify whether the Echo has a screen and which generation it is, then open the matching Amazon reset page. Resetting the wrong way can erase information or smart-home connections unnecessarily.

After the Echo reconnects

Ask Alexa a simple question and confirm that the response is current rather than a previously cached screen result. In the Alexa app, check that the device shows as online and that any expected smart-home devices are still present. If you changed bands or moved the Echo for testing, place it back gradually and retest from its intended location. A connection that works only beside the router indicates that placement or interference still needs attention.

Keep a note of which SSID and band succeeded, particularly if your router presents separate names. That record makes a future password change or router replacement easier to troubleshoot without immediately resetting the Echo.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

  • Several devices remain offline after a router restart.
  • The ISP confirms an outage or line problem.
  • The Echo cannot complete setup on either the home network or a properly configured phone hotspot.
  • The device repeatedly loses Wi‑Fi after a correct password, close placement, and both available bands have been tested.
  • You cannot identify the Echo model well enough to select the correct reset procedure.

For network-wide failures, the ISP is the appropriate next contact. For a single Echo that fails every network test, use Amazon’s official support directory and model-specific guidance rather than repeatedly erasing the device: Support for Amazon Echo.

What the official guidance does—and does not—establish

Amazon’s support pages give a practical troubleshooting order, supported Wi‑Fi standards, a 30-foot (10-meter) placement recommendation, app navigation for non-screen Echo devices, a hotspot fallback for setup, and model-dependent reset instructions. The pages do not provide a universal “best” band, a guaranteed working distance, or a single reset sequence for every Echo. Their publication year is not stated, and app labels or procedures may change; if the wording on your device differs, use the current model-specific Amazon instructions linked above.
