Start with the workload and airflow. Pause demanding AI inference, games, video, updates, or hotspot use; disconnect charging if practical; move the device out of sun or an enclosed space; and give vents clear air on a hard, flat surface. Warmth, fan noise, and a temporary speed reduction can be normal during sustained computing. Repeated overheating while idle, fan-test failures, unexpected shutdowns, a swollen case, or a burning or chemical odor require manufacturer support rather than more experimentation.
What “hot” and “throttling” mean on an AI device
An AI laptop, phone, tablet, or other computer produces heat whenever its processor, graphics hardware, memory, storage, modem, camera, or charging circuit is busy. AI workloads can keep several of those components active at once. Video calls, recording, streaming, navigation, uploads, gaming, software updates, and charging during intensive use can add to the load.

Thermal throttling is a protective control, not a diagnosis by itself. When sensors detect rising temperature, a device may reduce processor speed, limit charging current, lower camera or connectivity performance, enter a low-power mode, or eventually shut down. Google describes these limits for hot Pixel phones, while Dell lists slower performance during gaming or sustained heavy work as normal thermal throttling in its computer guidance. Those descriptions concern the device’s thermal-management system; they do not prove that a neural-processing unit (NPU) alone is overheating.
Warmth by itself is not a universal failure indicator. Dell’s support guidance states, “Warmth alone does not mean the computer is faulty.” The useful question is whether the heat matches the workload and whether the device returns to normal after the workload stops.

Normal heat versus a warning pattern
| Pattern | What it can mean | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Warm chassis and audible fans during sustained AI work, gaming, streaming, or updates | Expected heat removal under a heavy load | Reduce the workload temporarily, improve airflow, and check whether performance recovers when the task ends |
| Phone warms during a video call, recording, navigation, upload, or charging while busy | Several high-power functions are operating together | Stop the demanding app, disconnect power if the phone is too hot, and let it cool |
| Performance drops after a period of heavy use, then returns after a cool-down | Protective thermal throttling | Shorten sustained runs, lower brightness or workload, and avoid charging during the run |
| High temperature while idle, persistent loud fan noise, or a fan that never starts | Background process, thermal-profile or platform-software issue, blocked airflow, or hardware fault | Check processes and manufacturer diagnostics; arrange service if the condition persists |
| Repeated shutdowns or restarts under ordinary use | Thermal protection or another power or hardware problem | Save data, stop stressing the device, run approved diagnostics, and contact support |
| Swelling, case deformation, burning or chemical smell, or extreme heat that remains after shutdown | Potential battery or other safety hazard | Shut down, disconnect external power, stop using the device, and contact the manufacturer or authorized service |
Do this first: a five-minute cool-down
- Stop the trigger. Pause the AI model, game, video render, camera session, upload, update, or other resource-heavy task. Close unnecessary applications rather than repeatedly restarting the same workload.
- Disconnect avoidable heat sources. Unplug a phone that has become too hot. On a laptop, disconnect charging if the task can safely pause; intensive use while charging can raise heat.
- Move the device. Leave direct sunlight, a hot vehicle, a blanket, a bag, or any enclosed location. Place a laptop on a firm, flat surface with its intake and exhaust openings uncovered. Do not use bedding or a sofa as a cooling surface.
- Reduce display and radio load. Lower phone brightness and stop hotspot, navigation, camera, or other functions you do not need. Keep the device stationary while it cools.
- Wait for a real cool-down. Google advises moving an overly hot Pixel to a cooler place, disconnecting its power source, and not using it until it is cool. Do not put a device in a freezer or use water to accelerate cooling.
If there is swelling, deformation, a burning or chemical odor, or severe heat that continues after shutdown, skip troubleshooting. Dell’s safety direction is to turn the computer off, disconnect its AC adapter, stop using it, and contact support; do not open the computer or remove a swollen battery yourself.
Identify the pattern before changing settings
Write down what was happening when the heat began. A pattern is more useful to support staff than a single surface-temperature impression.
- Workload: Note whether it occurs during local AI inference, a browser-based model, gaming, video, a camera call, an update, file indexing, hotspot use, or charging.
- Timing: Record whether the device heats immediately, only after 10–30 minutes of sustained work, or even when untouched.
- Performance: Note a sudden frame-rate or model-speed drop, reduced charging rate, dimming, a low-power warning, or loss of camera or connectivity features.
- Cooling system: On a laptop, listen for fans. A persistent roar, a fan that never starts, clicking, or an error in a fan test is different from a normal brief ramp.
- Power state: Record whether the device is plugged in, fast-charging, running on battery, or connected to a dock or external display.
- Environment: Record sunlight, room heat, blocked vents, a case or sleeve, and the surface supporting the device.
Heat only during sustained demanding work generally calls for workload and airflow changes. Heat while idle, repeated shutdowns, or a failed fan diagnostic points toward software or hardware investigation.
Reduce load and improve airflow on a laptop or desktop-style AI computer
Close the process that is actually consuming resources
On Windows, open Task Manager and sort the Processes view by CPU, memory, and, where shown, GPU usage. Close applications you recognize and no longer need. A browser tab, sync client, video encoder, virtual machine, or indexing job can keep a system hot even when the AI application appears idle. Do not terminate Windows processes you do not recognize merely because they use a few percent of CPU; investigate the application name first.

Use the computer maker’s utility as a second view. Dell’s troubleshooting separates task-specific CPU load from platform software, thermal-profile conflicts, and possible fan or heatsink faults. A high reading that disappears when one application closes is a different problem from a fan that fails its self-test.
Give the cooling system unobstructed air
- Use a firm, level desk or table.
- Keep intake and exhaust vents clear of papers, fabric, dust mats, and cable bundles.
- Leave space around the sides and rear of the computer, especially when a dock or monitor stand is nearby.
- Do not cover a laptop with a case or sleeve while it is operating.
- For products covered by ASUS’s guidance, the stated ambient operating range is 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F). That is an ASUS-specific range, not a universal limit for every AI device.
Check thermal profiles and updates
Manufacturers may offer Silent, Balanced, Performance, or equivalent fan modes. A quiet profile can allow higher temperatures or lower sustained performance; a performance profile can increase fan noise. Test the maker’s recommended balanced or automatic mode before assuming the hardware is defective.
Install BIOS, firmware, chipset, graphics, and operating-system updates using the manufacturer’s instructions. Dell notes that Intel-specific platform software and the BIOS thermal profile can matter on some Intel-based laptops; do not apply that check to unrelated hardware. MSI’s notebook guidance likewise includes BIOS and Windows updates, closing unnecessary applications, ventilation, fan modes, and its hardware diagnostics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReduce heat on a phone or tablet
Phones and tablets usually have little or no active airflow. Their thermal strategy is therefore more visible: performance, charging speed, camera functions, connectivity, or power mode may be reduced until the enclosure cools.

- Avoid demanding use while charging. Use the maker-approved charger and cable; damaged or incompatible charging accessories can add heat.
- Do not charge under a blanket or in another poorly ventilated place. Huawei specifically advises avoiding hot charging locations and reducing activity while charging.
Samsung’s guidance also covers heat during charging and recommends checking battery condition and software. A phone that repeatedly becomes very hot during light use, or that shows charging warnings after the environment is normal, should be evaluated by the manufacturer.
Run the manufacturer’s diagnostics
Diagnostics are more informative than guessing from the outside of the case. Menu names and availability vary by model, operating-system version, and region.
Windows notebooks
- Run the maker’s hardware or fan test with the computer on a hard surface and its vents clear.
- Review the reported CPU or GPU load while the symptom occurs; note the application responsible.
- Check the maker’s thermal or fan utility for the selected profile and any warning.
- Apply approved BIOS, firmware, driver, and operating-system updates, then retest the same workload.
- If the fan test fails, a fan does not operate, or the system still overheats while idle, stop stressing it and arrange service.
ASUS describes a MyASUS fan diagnostic for supported devices. MSI provides hardware diagnostics in MSI Center on applicable notebooks. Dell’s tools and BIOS options differ by model, so use the support page for the exact service tag rather than installing a utility intended for another machine.

Samsung Galaxy devices
On compatible Galaxy devices, open the Samsung Members app and run its battery-status diagnostic. Samsung’s support pages also recommend keeping software current and avoiding hot charging conditions. If the diagnostic reports a problem or the phone repeatedly overheats after cooling and updating, use Samsung’s service route.
Other phones and tablets
Use the maker’s battery-health, device-care, or support diagnostic if one exists. Do not install a third-party “temperature fixer” that promises to override thermal controls. A tool cannot repair a failing fan, battery, heatsink, or thermal material, and forcing higher performance can increase risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clean vents only as the maker permits
Dust can restrict airflow, but cleaning instructions are model-specific. Shut the computer down completely and disconnect external power before permitted external cleaning. ASUS cautions against an air compressor because excessive pressure can damage fan blades; its guidance describes careful use of a commercial compressed-air can held at a distance. MSI likewise discusses compressed air or blowers at a distance while the notebook is shut down.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not open a sealed device, remove a battery, or insert tools into a vent unless the exact manufacturer service procedure authorizes it. ASUS notes that some products use passive cooling and have no fan or exhaust vent, so forcing air into them is not an appropriate fix. If dust is internal and the model is not user-serviceable, use authorized service.

Should you buy a laptop cooling pad or stand?
A laptop stand or laptop cooling pad can elevate a machine and help preserve an open intake path. Place it after the free measures: a hard, flat surface, uncovered vents, reduced workload, and a cooler environment. Benefit depends on the laptop’s vent layout; a pad cannot repair a failed fan, blocked internal heatsink, swollen battery, or degraded thermal material.
- Choose a stand when the main problem is a blocked underside or an awkward desk position and the laptop already has working fans.
- Choose a cooling pad when its airflow aligns with the laptop’s intake and its noise and size are acceptable.
- Choose service instead when diagnostics fail, a fan is silent or grinding, heat occurs at idle, or shutdowns recur.
Do not treat an accessory as proof that a device is safe to operate with a damaged battery or burning odor.
When throttling indicates a fault
Thermal controls should ease after the workload and environment improve. Escalate when one or more of these conditions applies:
- The device remains unusually hot while idle after unnecessary applications are closed and airflow is clear.
- A manufacturer fan or hardware diagnostic fails, or a fan never starts when the device is hot.
- Performance repeatedly collapses under a workload that previously ran normally, even after updates and profile checks.
- The computer shuts down or restarts unexpectedly, or the phone repeatedly enters a heat warning during light use.
- The chassis is swollen or deformed, the trackpad or screen is lifting, or there is a burning or chemical smell.
- Heat remains extreme after the device is powered off.
For a hazardous laptop, shut it down, unplug its AC adapter, keep it away from flammable materials, and contact the manufacturer or authorized repair provider. Do not open it or remove a swollen battery. For a dangerously hot phone, disconnect power, move it to a cooler place, do not use it until cool, and follow the maker’s service instructions.
Laptop and phone troubleshooting at a glance
| Decision point | Laptop or notebook | Phone or tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cooling hardware | Fans, heatsink, heat pipes, and vents on many models; some designs are passive | Usually passive cooling with software-controlled performance and charging limits |
| First physical change | Hard, flat surface; clear intake and exhaust; leave room around the chassis | Leave sun, hot vehicles, pockets, cases, and enclosed spaces; lower brightness |
| Useful software check | Task Manager plus the maker’s thermal utility, fan test, BIOS, and firmware tools | Built-in temperature or battery diagnostic where available; maker’s device-care app |
| Charging precaution | Reduce intensive work while charging if heat is excessive; use approved power equipment | Disconnect power while too hot; avoid demanding use and blankets during charging |
| Accessory option | Stand or laptop cooling pad may improve elevation and airflow | No external cooler replaces a cool-down or service for a battery fault |
| Immediate stop signs | Swelling, deformation, burning or chemical smell, failed fan, repeated shutdowns | Swelling, severe persistent heat, charging warning, burning or chemical smell |
Prevent the next thermal slowdown
- Run long AI jobs in shorter batches when continuous performance is unnecessary.
- Keep vents, intake grilles, and the surrounding desk clear.
- Install operating-system, BIOS, firmware, and app updates through official channels.
- Use a balanced thermal profile unless a sustained performance mode is specifically needed.
- Avoid stacking charging, hotspot, navigation, camera, and high-performance workloads on a phone.
- Watch for a new idle-heat pattern rather than relying only on how warm the case feels.
- Keep a record of diagnostic codes, shutdown times, workload, charger, and room conditions for support.
The practical boundary is simple: heat that follows a demanding task and clears with rest is usually a thermal-management behavior; heat at idle, failed diagnostics, recurrent shutdowns, or battery warning signs is a service problem. No universal CPU, NPU, or chassis temperature applies to every AI device, so use the exact model’s limits and support instructions.
