When an AI agent cannot see or control a desktop window, isolate the failure in this order: confirm computer-use is enabled for the task, grant the required permissions to the process that actually captures and controls the desktop, verify the host and target window are in the correct active session, then check operating-system and application support. On macOS, Screen Recording normally supplies visual access and Accessibility supplies interaction, so an agent can have one capability without the other. The exact names, helper processes, supported applications and privilege rules vary by product; use this sequence with that product’s current documentation.
Start with a five-minute triage
Do these checks before reinstalling the agent or changing unrelated system settings. Each one eliminates a different class of failure.

- Confirm the computer-use capability is enabled. Open the agent’s settings, task profile or tool list and verify that desktop/computer use is available. An administrator policy or access profile can hide the tool even when the operating system is correctly configured. GitHub’s setup instructions require computer use to be enabled before desktop interaction is attempted (GitHub setup documentation).
- Identify the controlling process. Find the agent, worker, helper or remote-host component named by the product. Grant permissions to that component, not automatically to the terminal, launcher or chat window you used to start it.
- Check viewing and control separately. If the agent cannot read a screenshot, investigate capture/Screen Recording access. If it can describe the screen but cannot click or type, investigate input-control/Accessibility access and privilege requirements.
- Make the desktop reachable. Wake the machine, confirm the remote connection, open the target application in the session controlled by the agent, and keep the target window visible if the implementation requires a visible, non-minimized window.
- Check support boundaries. Verify the operating system, display or headless configuration, application type, virtualization mode and elevation level against the product’s support documentation. Computer-use behavior is not universal across vendors.
If a direct API, MCP server, terminal, filesystem operation or dedicated browser tool can complete the task, use it instead of desktop pixels. Structured tools generally expose clearer errors and are less sensitive to window focus or rendering changes (GitHub’s computer-use concepts).
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | First checks | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The agent reports that no computer-use tool exists, or never attempts desktop interaction. | Check feature enablement, task/tool access profile, administrator policies and whether the selected model or workflow includes computer use. | Computer use must be enabled and can be constrained by policy or tool exposure. See GitHub’s setup guide and capability documentation. |
| The agent can click or type but cannot understand the screen, or screenshot capture fails. | On macOS, check Screen Recording for the actual capture/helper process. Confirm the target is in the session being controlled. | Screen Recording is the documented macOS permission for visual access in the cited products. Exact behavior differs by implementation; see Jump Desktop’s requirements and GitHub’s permission steps. |
| The agent sees a window but cannot click, type or manipulate controls. | On macOS, check Accessibility for the actual controlling helper. On other systems, review input-control prerequisites, protected-app rules and privilege matching. | Accessibility is identified for interacting with controls in the cited macOS documentation. Some protected or elevated applications require comparable privileges, depending on the implementation. |
| Permissions look granted, but the error remains. | Use the product’s permission-status check, restart the worker if instructed, then verify that the grant belongs to the helper that captures or controls the desktop. | GitHub documents a “Check again” action; the self-hosted Cursor guide calls for restarting the worker after granting permissions (Cursor documentation). |
| A remote host does not connect. | Check that the host is awake, the network and host configuration are correct, and the agent is attached to the intended machine. | Jump Desktop states that a sleeping host cannot accept its agent connection (Jump Desktop documentation). |
| Only one application fails while others work. | Check whether that application is minimized, protected, elevated, virtualized or built with controls the agent does not support. | Microsoft lists application and virtualized-environment limitations, while GitHub notes that non-standard or dynamic interfaces can defeat computer-use interactions (Microsoft Learn; GitHub). |
| A Linux or headless worker has no usable screen. | Confirm that the product supports Linux/headless operation and complete its display or worker setup. A desktop agent may require a real graphical session. | Support differs: one cited product excludes Linux/headless builds, while the self-hosted Cursor documentation provides Linux display checks (Cursor documentation). |
1. Verify that computer use is enabled and exposed
Check the agent’s capability, not just the operating system
Desktop control is usually an optional capability. A machine can have a monitor, an unlocked desktop and broad operating-system permissions while the selected agent, model, workspace or task profile has no computer-use tool. Open the product’s settings and inspect the enabled tools, task mode, organization policy and any computer-use toggle. GitHub’s documentation explicitly instructs users to enable Computer Use and explains that tool exposure and policy constraints affect whether the agent can call it (setup; concepts).

Ask the agent for a screenshot only after confirming that the capability appears in its tool list. If the interface says the tool is unavailable, treat that as an access or configuration problem rather than a macOS permission problem. Check whether an administrator has disabled computer use, whether the task was created with a restricted profile, and whether the worker is running the expected version or mode.
Confirm the worker and task are on the same machine
Remote and self-hosted products can separate the chat interface from the worker that controls the desktop. Verify the worker identifier, host name and connection status. A permission granted on your laptop does not help a worker running on another Mac or on a remote virtual machine. Record which process the product identifies as the capture and control helper before changing permissions.
2. Fix macOS permissions for the process that does the work
The cited macOS implementations split observation and interaction into separate privacy controls. Jump Desktop says an agent cannot view or control a Mac without both Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions (Jump Desktop requirements). GitHub’s setup documentation describes the same distinction: Screen Recording permits visual access to application windows, while Accessibility permits interaction with application controls (GitHub setup).
Grant Screen Recording for visual access
- Open System Settings and choose Privacy & Security.
- Open Screen Recording.
- Locate the agent, worker or helper named in that product’s instructions and enable it.
- Authenticate if macOS requests an administrator password, then fully quit and relaunch the component if the product requires it.
The important detail is identity: the permission must belong to the process that captures the desktop. Granting access to a terminal merely because you launched the agent from that terminal may not grant access to a separately installed worker or helper.

Grant Accessibility for clicks and typing
- Return to System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Open Accessibility.
- Enable the exact agent, worker or helper listed by the product.
- Restart the component if its documentation requires a restart before the new grant is recognized.
Test the two capabilities independently. Ask for a screenshot first. If the image is available but a harmless click or text-entry test fails, Screen Recording is probably working and Accessibility or an application privilege boundary is the next check.
Refresh a permission that appears correct
Privacy settings can show a checked box before the worker has reloaded its authorization. GitHub provides a Check again action in its setup flow; use that after changing permissions (GitHub setup). For a self-hosted worker, the Cursor guide says to restart the worker after granting access (Cursor self-hosted computer-use guide). If the permission list contains several similarly named helpers, remove ambiguity by following the product’s documented helper identity rather than enabling every unrelated application.
3. Put the host and target window in a controllable session
Wake and connect the host
A sleeping computer cannot respond to desktop automation. Jump Desktop specifically states that a sleeping host cannot accept its agent connection (Jump Desktop documentation). Wake the machine, sign in if the product requires an unlocked session, and wait for the remote worker to report connected. Check network reachability and confirm that the configured host is the one you intend to control; a healthy connection to the wrong host looks like an application or permission failure.

Use the session the worker controls
Open the target application in the worker’s graphical session, not in a different user session, a disconnected remote session or a separate virtual desktop. If multiple users are signed in, verify which account owns the active display. Some implementations can only inspect the visible desktop attached to their worker. A window that exists in another session may be invisible even though the application process is running.

Make the window visible and stable
Bring the target window to the foreground, restore it from minimized state and avoid moving it while the agent is locating controls. Products that rely on screenshots or visible coordinates may not detect a background or minimized window. Keep menus closed unless the task needs one, and wait for the application to finish loading before requesting an action. If the agent loses the window after a dialog opens, ask it to capture a fresh screenshot rather than relying on an earlier image.
4. Check operating-system, display and application support
Do not assume support transfers between products
Computer-use tools have different operating-system matrices and display requirements. The cited CoWork guidance says its tools are unavailable on Linux and headless builds, while Cursor documents Linux display troubleshooting for its self-hosted worker (GitHub capability boundaries; Cursor Linux guidance). Therefore, “Linux desktop” is not a sufficient diagnosis: check the exact product, worker mode, display server and supported configuration.
For a Linux worker, verify that a graphical display exists, the worker can address it, the display variable and session ownership match the product’s instructions, and the worker is not running as a headless service with no accessible screen. If the product excludes headless operation, no permission toggle can make that configuration work; use a supported graphical host or a non-GUI tool.
Check Windows and virtualized environments
Microsoft’s computer-use documentation describes a configured Windows computer and notes that some application types and virtualized environments may not be supported (Microsoft Learn). Compare the failing application with the supported categories in the product’s current guide. A normal desktop window, a browser tab, a remote-app surface and a virtualized control may expose very different accessibility or capture interfaces.

Account for protected and elevated applications
Security boundaries can block input or capture when the target application runs with higher privileges than the agent. Examples include administrator-elevated tools, secure credential prompts and protected system surfaces. Depending on the implementation, the agent may need comparable privileges, or the application may be intentionally inaccessible. Do not weaken system security blindly; first check the product’s privilege guidance and test with a non-elevated application. If ordinary applications work but an elevated one fails, treat the elevation boundary as the leading hypothesis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Diagnose applications that work only partially
When screenshots work but controls do not
An image proves that capture works, not that the agent can identify or activate every control. GitHub notes that non-standard and dynamic interfaces can limit computer-use reliability (GitHub capability documentation). Custom-drawn canvases, rapidly changing layouts, remote-streamed surfaces and controls that appear only after hover may not expose stable targets. Test a standard button or text field in the same application. If that works, the problem is likely control compatibility rather than a missing global permission.
When one application is invisible
Check whether the application is minimized, on another virtual desktop, protected by a secure surface, running elevated or rendered inside a virtualized environment. Compare it with a simple, ordinary desktop application. Microsoft’s documented limitations mean that an application-specific failure can be expected behavior rather than a broken agent (Microsoft Learn).
When the agent loses track after a change
Window resizing, navigation, modal dialogs and dynamic content can invalidate coordinates or earlier visual context. Have the agent capture the current screen after each major transition, keep the target window at a consistent size and break the task into small actions with verification after each one. For workflows that must be robust, prefer the application’s API, command line, filesystem interface or browser automation when available.

6. Recovery sequence when permissions look right
Use this sequence to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Close the agent’s task and stop the worker or helper cleanly.
- Confirm the host is awake, connected and signed in to the intended desktop session.
- Open macOS Privacy & Security and verify Screen Recording and Accessibility for the documented helper, or verify the corresponding permissions on another operating system.
- Start the worker, wait for its connected/ready state, and use the product’s permission check or Check again control.
- Open a simple, non-elevated application and request a screenshot.
- Request one low-risk interaction, such as focusing a text field, then verify the result visually.
- Test the original application only after the basic capture-and-input test succeeds.
If the basic test fails, collect the worker’s exact error, operating-system version, product version, host type and session configuration for the vendor’s support channel. If the basic test succeeds but the original application fails, provide the application type, whether it is elevated or virtualized, and whether the failing control is standard or custom.
7. Choose a better interface when desktop control is the wrong tool
Desktop automation is useful when no structured interface exists, but it is inherently dependent on a rendered session, permissions, focus and control discoverability. GitHub recommends considering an API, MCP server, terminal, filesystem tool or dedicated browser tool when one can perform the task more predictably (GitHub computer-use concepts).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Task condition | Prefer | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The application exposes an API or MCP server. | API or MCP call | Structured fields and explicit errors avoid screen-coordinate and focus failures. |
| The work is file manipulation or code execution. | Filesystem or terminal tool | Deterministic paths, command output and exit codes are easier to verify than visual state. |
| The task is confined to a supported website. | Dedicated browser tool | Browser-oriented actions can be more stable than controlling the entire desktop. |
| No structured interface exists and the application requires visible interaction. | Computer-use agent | Keep a supported, awake graphical session and apply the permission and compatibility checks above. |
8. Compare an agent or desktop setup before deploying it
If you are selecting a computer-use product or designing a dedicated worker, compare these documented dimensions rather than assuming that a feature labeled “computer use” has the same behavior everywhere:
- Operating systems: Confirm supported Windows, macOS and Linux versions, plus whether a graphical display is mandatory.
- Headless and remote operation: Determine whether a headless worker is supported, whether a host must remain awake and how a disconnected session is handled.
- Permission mapping: Identify the exact process or helper that needs screen-capture and input permissions.
- Window visibility: Ask whether the target must be active, visible and non-minimized, and whether multiple sessions or virtual desktops are supported.
- Privilege boundaries: Check behavior with administrator-elevated applications, secure prompts and protected windows.
- Application compatibility: Look for limits on virtualized apps, custom controls, dynamic interfaces and remote-streamed surfaces.
- Recovery controls: Verify that the product offers a permission recheck, worker restart procedure and useful diagnostics.
- Structured alternatives: Prefer an API, MCP, terminal, filesystem or browser interface whenever it can complete the workflow.
These are vendor-documented differences, not a universal ranking of agents. Read the current setup guide for the particular product and version you operate. The cited references illustrate why requirements differ: Jump Desktop documents host sleep and Mac permissions, GitHub documents enablement and alternative tools, Microsoft documents application limitations, and Cursor documents helper-specific permissions and Linux display checks (Jump Desktop; GitHub setup; GitHub concepts; Microsoft Learn; Cursor).
Prevent repeat failures
- Keep a dedicated worker host awake when remote interaction is required, and document how it reconnects after sleep or reboot.
- Record the approved helper identity for Screen Recording and Accessibility rather than granting access ad hoc to launchers.
- Use a dedicated graphical session with a predictable display, window size and application state.
- Test capture and a harmless input action after operating-system, agent or worker updates.
- Keep elevated and protected applications out of unattended workflows unless the product explicitly supports them.
- Prefer APIs and other structured tools for repeatable operations, reserving desktop control for tasks that genuinely require a graphical interface.
Bottom line
An AI agent that cannot see or control desktop windows is usually failing at one of five boundaries: the computer-use feature is disabled, the wrong process has permissions, the host or window is in an inaccessible session, the platform configuration is unsupported, or the application exposes controls the agent cannot operate. Separate visual access from input control, verify the actual helper, wake and prepare the correct desktop session, then test a simple application before blaming the target app. Because implementations differ, the product’s current documentation is the authority for exact permission names, helper identities and supported configurations.
