Update the app, reload the service configuration, test another location or protocol when your service supports it, and rule out conflicting VPN settings before changing a self-hosted server. For speed complaints, compare the same device and network with the VPN off and on, using a test server near the selected VPN endpoint.
The procedure below separates Free, Premium, and self-hosted installations, because their recovery options differ. It also treats “connected but no internet” as a different fault from a failed handshake, and explains when a protocol change, server investigation, or support log is justified.

Start by identifying the exact failure
Write down the symptom before changing settings. “The connection fails” can mean that the app cannot retrieve configuration, a tunnel never forms, a tunnel forms but carries no packets, or traffic works but is slower than expected. Each symptom points to a different branch.
- Won’t connect: the app reports an error, remains in a connecting state, or cannot create a VPN profile.
- Connected, no traffic: AmneziaVPN shows an active tunnel, but websites and applications cannot reach the internet.
- Intermittent drops: traffic stops after the phone sleeps, the network changes, or the tunnel is idle.
- Slow connection: pages load, but download or upload performance is substantially lower than the same line without the VPN.
- Self-hosted server failure: a private server cannot be reached, an AmneziaWG user cannot connect, or the management panel cannot communicate with the server.
Also record the device and operating system, AmneziaVPN version, service type (Free, Premium, or Self-hosted), selected location, protocol, exact error text, and whether ordinary internet works with the VPN switched off. Repeat the test on another network, such as mobile data instead of home Wi-Fi, if possible. This tells you whether one connection is broken or every connection is affected.

Use the safe recovery sequence first
These steps do not alter a private server or delete user credentials. Perform them in order, retrying after each meaningful change.
- Confirm ordinary internet access. Turn AmneziaVPN off and open several unrelated sites. If the underlying network is offline, fix that first.
- Update AmneziaVPN. Install the current release for your platform using the app’s normal update path. Menu names can vary between Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and later app versions.
- Reload the API configuration. Open the affected connection’s settings and use the command labelled to reload, refresh, or retrieve the API configuration. Reconnect after the refresh completes.
- Test a different available endpoint. Premium users should try another listed location. A location that fails on one network may work on another, but availability changes over time.
- Try the documented alternative protocol. Premium guidance specifically points to VLESS when no available location connects. Do not assume that a protocol change guarantees better speed or circumvention.
- Recreate only the local connection when appropriate. Free guidance recommends deleting and recreating the “VPN by Amnezia” connection if refreshing the configuration does not help. Recreating a local profile is different from reinstalling a self-hosted server protocol.
After each attempt, note whether the error changed. A new error is useful evidence; repeatedly tapping connect without recording the result makes the cause harder to isolate.
Fix a Free connection
For the Free service, first verify that the app is current, then reload the API configuration from the affected connection’s settings. Close and reopen the app only after the reload has completed, and test again on the same network so the result is comparable.
If refreshing does not restore traffic
Delete the failed Free connection and create it again through the documented “VPN by Amnezia” flow. This rebuilds the local profile and retrieves a new configuration. Make sure the device has working internet during setup; a profile cannot be rebuilt if the API request itself is blocked.
If the profile connects but applications remain offline
Check for another VPN, firewall, DNS filter, or security product that may be forcing its own tunnel. On Android, inspect other VPN applications for Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN. Those controls can prevent AmneziaVPN from adding or using its profile. Disable the conflicting control temporarily, reconnect AmneziaVPN, and then decide which VPN should own the device’s traffic.
Fix a Premium connection
Premium troubleshooting starts with the same update and API-configuration reload. If the connection still fails, test every currently listed location rather than assuming the first one is representative.

When all listed locations fail
Try the alternative protocol offered in the Premium instructions, such as VLESS, and test again. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison: record whether the tunnel forms and whether traffic actually passes. A successful handshake does not prove that the route is fast or that a local network restriction has been removed.

Whitelist-restricted mobile networks
Amnezia’s Premium guidance describes a Greenland location for some whitelist-restricted mobile internet. That is a regional, service-dependent option, not a universal remedy. Check whether the location is currently offered to your account and whether the restriction applies to your carrier. If it is absent, do not infer that another location will have the same behavior.
When AmneziaVPN says “connected” but there is no internet
A connected status only confirms that the app believes a tunnel exists. It does not guarantee that packets can leave the device, reach the endpoint, or return through the tunnel. Use this branch when the status is connected but browsers, messaging apps, or command-line tools time out.
Check for a kill switch or competing profile
On Windows, macOS, and Linux, inspect AmneziaVPN’s KillSwitch setting. If the tunnel dropped unexpectedly, KillSwitch may intentionally block all non-VPN traffic, which looks like a complete internet outage. Disable it temporarily for testing or reconnect the VPN; re-enable it when you have confirmed the tunnel is stable.
Amnezia states that the app has no built-in KillSwitch on Android or iOS. On those platforms, look instead for a system VPN setting, another VPN application, a firewall, or a security filter that is enforcing an always-on route. Android’s Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN controls are especially important when another VPN app is installed.

Check Android power management
Battery optimization and power-saving modes can stop background VPN activity after the screen turns off. Review the operating system’s battery settings for AmneziaVPN and allow the background activity required by your device policy. Test with the screen awake first; if traffic works only while the app is visible, power management is a strong suspect.

Refresh the service configuration
Use the connection’s API-configuration reload before changing protocol parameters. A stale configuration can produce a tunnel with no usable routes. Free users should recreate the connection if the refresh fails; Premium users should test another location and then the documented alternative protocol.
Compare networks
Turn the VPN off and verify normal browsing on the same network. Then test AmneziaVPN over a second access path, such as mobile data versus home Wi-Fi. If it works on one network but not another, focus on the failing carrier, router, firewall, or access restriction rather than repeatedly rebuilding the app profile.
Diagnose a connection that will not form
Match the exact error code
Amnezia maintains an error-code guide with separate entries for platform or protocol incompatibility, API-configuration retrieval failures, subscription configuration limits, and missing installed protocol containers. Copy the complete code and wording, then follow the entry for that code. A generic reinstall can hide the distinction between a client problem and a server-side limit.

Some protocols or server containers are not available on every client and server combination. Confirm that the selected protocol is supported by the current app and that the server has the required container installed. If the app reports a missing container, the remedy belongs on the server or in the management workflow, not in a phone’s network settings.
Do not edit undocumented XRay fields
For XRay VLESS Reality configurations, Amnezia advises changing only the Server Name (SNI) and, when necessary, the port. Altering other fields can stop the connection. Preserve the supplied values, make one change at a time, and save a copy of the original configuration before testing.
Measure speed without fooling yourself
Speed is a comparison problem, not a single number that AmneziaVPN promises. Amnezia’s FAQ uses a “below 100 Mbps” heading as a troubleshooting prompt; it is not evidence of a universal minimum or expected benchmark.

Run a controlled comparison
- Use the same device, access network, and time window for both tests.
- Run a test with AmneziaVPN disconnected and record download and upload results.
- Connect to the chosen location and protocol.
- Run the test again using a test server geographically close to that VPN endpoint. For a Germany endpoint, select a Germany-based test server where the test service allows it.
- Repeat once if results fluctuate, and record latency, download, upload, location, protocol, and test time.
Amnezia recommends nPerf for this comparison. The important control is server geography: testing a Germany VPN through a distant test server can measure the test route more than the VPN itself.
Interpret the result
- VPN-off speed is already low: the foreign-server path, local access link, or carrier may be the limiting factor. A VPN cannot restore bandwidth that the underlying connection does not provide.
- Only one location is slow: congestion or routing on that endpoint is more likely than a device-wide fault. Compare another available location.
- Every location is slow: investigate the access network, protocol overhead, routing, and restrictions before assuming the app is defective.
- Download is acceptable but upload collapses: record both directions; asymmetric routing or carrier policy can affect upload differently.
Common causes listed by Amnezia

These are possible causes from Amnezia’s guidance, not a diagnosis of any particular line. Do not use a single speed-test result to promise that a protocol or location will bypass a restriction.
Separate device-to-VPN speed from server speed
A self-hosted server can be fast on its own network while the route from your phone or laptop is slow. Amnezia’s hosting guidance describes installing Ookla’s Speedtest command-line utility on the server to measure server-side performance. That test answers “How fast can the server reach the test service?” It does not replace the device-to-endpoint comparison above, which answers “How fast can this client use the VPN?” Record both measurements when investigating a private deployment.

Do not begin by reinstalling a protocol. First establish whether the server is alive and reachable from the affected network.
Verify the account and network prerequisites
- Confirm that the server is active and paid for.
- From the same network where the VPN fails, check ordinary access to a foreign test server. Amnezia’s self-hosted instructions use nPerf for this initial check.
- Try to reach the server over SSH.
- Open the app’s VPN user-management or management section and see whether it can communicate with the server.
Some networks restrict or severely limit access to foreign servers, so an unsuccessful foreign-server test does not by itself prove that AmneziaWG is misconfigured.

If both SSH and app management fail
When the server cannot be reached by either SSH or the management section, Amnezia says the server IP may have been blocked by the mobile carrier or ISP. Discuss an IP change with the hosting provider or consider another provider. This is a network or hosting reachability problem; changing client protocol fields will not restore a blocked address.
If server access works
Inspect the AmneziaWG parameters using the current app guidance. Protocol settings and supported version combinations change, so follow the instructions that match your installed release rather than copying an old version number from an archived guide.
Understand the cost of reinstalling
In the specific older-version cases covered by Amnezia’s instructions, reinstalling the protocol may be the next step. Removing the protocol deletes its users and stops their connections. After reinstalling, recreate every user and distribute new connection keys or configuration files. Warn users before starting and keep a secure record of who needs a replacement key.
Check router compatibility before migration
If you plan to move from one protocol to another for router use, verify that the router supports the destination protocol and required settings first. A migration that works on a phone may not be usable by the router, and reinstalling a server protocol can create avoidable downtime.

Treat such restrictions as regional and network-dependent, and do not present a protocol migration as a guaranteed bypass.
Compare protocols and locations by evidence, not reputation
Amnezia documents AmneziaWG, XRay VLESS Reality, OpenVPN, and WireGuard. When more than one is available, use the same decision axes for each option.

There is no evidence in the troubleshooting material for a universal fastest or most reliable protocol. Choose the option that works on your network and meets your platform requirements, then keep the measured results for future comparisons.
Platform-specific checks
Android
- Inspect other VPN apps for Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN.
- Review battery optimization and power-saving rules for AmneziaVPN.
- Remember that AmneziaVPN has no built-in KillSwitch on Android; a total traffic block usually points to another system or security control.
- Test with the screen awake, then retest after sleep to distinguish power management from configuration failure.
Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Check whether KillSwitch is enabled after an unexpected tunnel drop.
- Look for another VPN, firewall, or security filter controlling the default route.
- Use the exact error code when a protocol container or API configuration cannot be found.
iOS
Amnezia states that it has no built-in KillSwitch on iOS. Check iOS VPN profiles, other security applications, and network-level filtering when traffic stops. Menu labels differ by iOS release, so use the labels shown on the device rather than assuming the desktop settings exist.
Collect logs when the normal sequence fails
Logs are primarily for support, not a substitute for the ordered checks above. Amnezia’s logging workflow is:
- Clear old logs so the export reflects the current incident.
- Enable log recording.
- Reproduce the failure once, noting the time and exact action that triggered it.
- Stop recording and export the logs.
- Send the export to Amnezia support through the current official contact channel, together with the device, operating system, app version, service type, location, protocol, network type, and exact error.
Do not edit the exported file or repeatedly reproduce the problem for a long period; a short log containing one clear failure is easier for support to correlate. The logging guide does not provide a separate manual log-reading procedure, so avoid guessing at internal messages.
