1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you are looking for an Alexa “screen sharing” button on a tablet, stop first: Amazon’s current support documentation describes Show Mode, Alexa hands-free, video calls and Drop In, but it does not document sharing a Fire tablet’s entire display through Alexa. Show Mode turns certain Fire tablets into an Alexa visual display; it is not remote screen sharing. The correct fix depends on whether Show Mode will not activate, Alexa is not hearing you, a video call will not connect, Drop In is unavailable, or you expected another person to see the tablet screen.
Use the sequence below to identify the feature, verify the tablet generation and Fire OS version, check permissions and communication settings, and read the tablet’s audio/video indicators before changing anything else.

First, identify what “screen sharing” means in your case
Alexa features that look similar on a screen device have different controls and limitations. Treating them as one feature sends troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

| What you want to do | Alexa feature documented by Amazon | What it actually does |
|---|---|---|
| Use a Fire tablet as a room-wide Alexa display | Show Mode | Changes a compatible Fire tablet into a visual Alexa display that you can interact with from across the room. |
| Speak a wake word without touching the tablet | Alexa hands-free | Uses on-device keyword spotting; after detection, the request audio is sent to Amazon’s cloud. |
| Speak with someone while seeing video on supported screen devices | Alexa video call | Starts an audio/video communication session. It does not document broadcasting the tablet’s general screen. |
| Connect automatically to an enabled Alexa device or contact | Drop In | Creates an audio or video connection on a supported receiving device after the required permissions are in place. |
| Let another person watch everything displayed on the Fire tablet | Not documented in the reviewed Amazon support pages | Do not assume Show Mode, a camera call or Drop In provides tablet-display sharing. |
That last distinction is decisive. A camera can show what is in front of it during a call, but that is different from transmitting the tablet’s user interface, apps or documents. Amazon’s support pages reviewed for this guide do not establish an Alexa tablet screen-sharing control.

Check the exact tablet before changing settings
Show Mode support is tied to the tablet’s generation and Fire OS version, not simply to a family name such as “Fire HD.” Read the model and generation in the tablet’s device information, then compare it with Amazon’s compatibility list.
Show Mode models and minimum software listed by Amazon
| Fire tablet | Show Mode status in Amazon’s support list | Minimum Fire OS information |
|---|---|---|
| Fire HD 8 (7th generation) | Compatible | Use the minimum Fire OS version stated for that generation on Amazon’s Show Mode support page. |
| Fire HD 8 (8th generation) | Compatible | Use the minimum Fire OS version stated for that generation on Amazon’s Show Mode support page. |
| Fire HD 8 (10th generation) | Compatible | Use the minimum Fire OS version stated for that generation on Amazon’s Show Mode support page. |
| Fire HD 10 (7th generation) | Compatible | Use the minimum Fire OS version stated for that generation on Amazon’s Show Mode support page. |
| Fire HD 10 (9th generation) | Compatible | Use the minimum Fire OS version stated for that generation on Amazon’s Show Mode support page. |
| Fire HD 10 (11th generation) | Compatible with Fire OS 7.3.1.8 or later | Fire OS 7.3.1.8 or later |
| Fire HD 10 (13th generation) | Incompatible | Not supported for Show Mode, regardless of attempting the activation command. |
| Fire Max 11 (13th generation) | Incompatible | Not supported for Show Mode. |
| Fire HD 8 (12th generation) | Incompatible | Not supported for Show Mode. |
| Some Fire 7 generations | Amazon lists some generations as incompatible | Check the exact generation rather than assuming every Fire 7 model qualifies. |
Amazon’s list can change as new hardware and software are released. If the Show Mode switch is absent on a tablet that is listed as incompatible, that is expected behavior rather than evidence of a damaged installation. A compatible model running an older Fire OS version should be updated before deeper troubleshooting.
Activate or exit Show Mode correctly
On a compatible Fire tablet, Amazon documents three ways to enter Show Mode. Try the touch method first because it confirms whether the control exists.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- From the tablet’s home screen, swipe down from the top to open Quick Actions.
- Tap Show Mode to turn it on.
- If the switch is not visible, open the Alexa app and use its Show Mode control, or say “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.”
To leave Show Mode, open Quick Actions and toggle Show Mode off, or say “Alexa, exit Show Mode.”
If the Show Mode option is missing
- Confirm the full model and generation; “Fire HD 10” alone is not enough.
- Check the installed Fire OS version in the tablet’s device settings and install available system updates.
- Compare the result with Amazon’s Show Mode compatibility list. A Fire HD 10 (13th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation) or Fire HD 8 (12th generation) will not gain Show Mode through a voice command.
- On a listed compatible model, restart the tablet after updating, then check Quick Actions again.
Do not interpret a successful voice response as proof that the tablet is sharing its screen. Show Mode changes the Alexa-oriented display experience; it does not establish remote viewing of every app or document.
Fix Alexa hands-free when the tablet does not respond
Hands-free Alexa is separate from Show Mode. A tablet can enter Show Mode while still failing to respond to the wake word if hands-free is disabled, permissions are restricted or the device is in a state where wake-word detection is limited.
Turn on Alexa and Hands-Free Mode
- Open Settings on the Fire tablet.
- Choose Alexa.
- Enable Alexa and Hands-Free Mode.
Amazon notes that some tablets may not detect the wake word while the screen is off and the tablet is not connected to power. For a reliable test, wake the display and connect the charger before saying “Alexa.”
Use the visual streaming indicator
Fire Tablet Alexa uses on-device keyword spotting to listen for the wake word. Once the wake word is detected, the request audio is streamed to Amazon’s cloud, including a fraction of a second before the wake word. A blue line at the bottom of the display indicates streaming after wake-word detection or after pressing and holding the Home button.

- Stream or download your favorite shows, movies, and games (like Minecraft, Roblox, and more). Enjoy your favorite content from Facebook, Hulu, Instagram, TikTok, and more through Amazon’s Appstore (Google Play not supported. Subscription for some apps required).
- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
If no blue line appears, Alexa did not enter the streaming state. Check the hands-free setting, wake the screen, connect power and try again in a quieter location. Avoid treating silence alone as proof that the microphone is broken; the indicator provides the more useful diagnostic signal.
Re-enable hands-free if it was disabled accidentally
Amazon provides three ways to turn hands-free back on or off:
- Use Quick Actions.
- Go to Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode.
- Hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds.
When hands-free is off in Show Mode, Amazon says a red bar and icon appear on the display. Outside Show Mode, an icon appears in the status bar. Check for those indicators before troubleshooting Wi-Fi or reinstalling anything.

Check camera, microphone and communication permissions
Video calls and Drop In need communication access that ordinary Show Mode use does not. Review the tablet’s privacy and app permissions for the Alexa app and allow camera and microphone access when you intend to use video or voice communication. The exact wording of permission screens can vary by Fire OS release, so use the Alexa app’s permission prompts and the tablet’s application settings rather than relying on an old menu name.
- For a voice-only test, verify that the microphone is not muted at the device level.
- For video, verify camera permission and check whether an on-screen camera control is set to off.
- For contact communication, confirm that the relevant contact has been granted permission for the requested feature.
- After changing a permission, close and reopen the Alexa communication screen, then start a new call or Drop In session.
Amazon says a Fire tablet displays an indicator when Alexa streams audio, images or video. During an active video call, a picture-in-picture view indicates video streaming. These indicators are more reliable than guessing from whether the other person can hear or see you.
Troubleshoot a video call separately from Show Mode
Video calling is a communication function on supported screen devices, not a method for sharing the tablet’s interface. Amazon’s documented procedure for starting a call from an Echo device with a screen is:
- Open Communicate.
- Select Call.
- Choose a contact.
- Select the contact’s Echo Show device.
During the call, select Video Off to stop sending video, or use the device’s Mute button to stop audio. If the call connects but the picture is missing, check the camera control and the video-streaming indicator rather than Show Mode.

If a tablet is not appearing as the expected video destination
- Confirm that the destination device is one Amazon supports for the communication feature you selected.
- Verify that the Alexa app is signed in to the intended account and that the contact details are current.
- Check camera and microphone permissions on both sides of the conversation.
- Start a fresh call after permissions change; an existing session may not pick up the new setting.
The reviewed support material does not promise that every Fire tablet model can act as every type of Alexa video endpoint. Do not broaden the Echo Show procedure into a guarantee for unsupported tablet generations.

Troubleshoot Drop In and its permission model
Drop In is optional. On a supported receiving device, the audio or video connection can begin automatically when Drop In is accepted by the device configuration. That behavior is different from a conventional call that waits for the recipient to answer.
Start Drop In from the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app.
- Choose More > Communicate > Drop In.
- Select the target device.
- Use Hang Up when you want to end the session.
Amazon notes that the Alexa app can Drop In on other devices, but other devices cannot Drop In on the Alexa app. If the target is a contact using a separate Amazon account, that contact must grant permission; contact Drop In requires permission from both sides.
When Drop In fails
- Confirm that Drop In is enabled for the intended device and has not been disabled as a privacy choice.
- Check whether the destination is a supported Alexa device rather than assuming any tablet or phone can receive the connection.
- For cross-account contacts, ask the contact to review and approve the Drop In request.
- Review communication settings and the account used by the Alexa app.
- Use the camera and microphone controls to determine whether the issue is video, audio or the connection itself.
Disabling Drop In does not prove that the camera is physically inactive. It only changes whether this communication feature is available. Use the visual indicator and explicit camera control to determine whether video is streaming.
Use a symptom-based decision path
| Symptom | Most relevant check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No Show Mode switch | Model generation and Fire OS version | Compare the exact tablet with Amazon’s compatibility list; update a supported model. |
| Voice command does nothing | Alexa and Hands-Free Mode | Check Settings > Alexa, wake the screen, connect power and look for the blue streaming line. |
| Red bar or hands-free icon | Hands-free disabled | Re-enable it in Quick Actions, Settings or with the two-volume-button shortcut. |
| Call connects without video | Camera permission or Video Off control | Allow camera access, turn video on and confirm picture-in-picture appears. |
| Drop In unavailable for a contact | Permission and account relationship | Verify both sides approved contact Drop In and that communication settings permit it. |
| Another person cannot see apps or documents on the tablet | Feature expectation | Alexa support pages reviewed here do not document tablet-display sharing; use a separate screen-sharing solution designed for that purpose. |
Privacy checks before testing again
Alexa’s indicators are part of the troubleshooting process, not decoration. Watch for the blue line when a wake-word request begins streaming, the red bar and icon when hands-free is disabled in Show Mode, and the picture-in-picture view during an active video call. Amazon also says the Fire tablet indicates when Alexa streams audio, images or video.
Before testing in a private room, confirm whether you are using a normal call or Drop In, whether the camera is enabled, and which contact or device is selected. End a session with Hang Up when finished. If you do not want unsolicited Drop In connections, leave the optional feature disabled or remove contact permission rather than trying to solve the issue by turning off the tablet’s entire microphone.
What to do when the hardware cannot provide Show Mode
If the exact model is listed as incompatible, there is no supported Show Mode activation to repair. A compatible replacement is a hardware decision, not a software tweak. Amazon specifically lists the Fire HD 10 (11th generation) as Show Mode compatible when it runs Fire OS 7.3.1.8 or later, but compatibility does not mean the tablet supports Alexa screen sharing, and it does not guarantee a current price or availability.
If your actual need is to show a document, app or full tablet interface to another person, describe that need as remote display sharing when choosing a solution. Do not buy or update a tablet solely because it supports Show Mode; Show Mode addresses room-based Alexa interaction, not the undocumented screen-broadcast function.
When to stop troubleshooting Alexa settings
Stop changing Alexa options and reassess the feature when all of the following are true:
- The tablet’s generation and Fire OS version have been checked.
- The requested function has been classified as Show Mode, hands-free, video call, Drop In or display sharing.
- Alexa and Hands-Free Mode are enabled where required.
- Camera, microphone and contact permissions match the intended action.
- The relevant streaming or privacy indicators have been observed.
At that point, a missing Show Mode control on incompatible hardware or a request for full tablet-display sharing is a product limitation or feature mismatch, not a hidden Alexa setting.
