How to Troubleshoot a Website That Won’t Load or Respond to Clicks

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Start by finding out whether the failure affects one website or your whole connection. Try a second, familiar site, note the exact browser error, then compare the problem in another browser or a private window. Those comparisons usually separate a website outage from a browser, device, or network problem without risky changes.

If the page appears but buttons and links do nothing, use the same isolation process first. Developers can then use Chrome DevTools to determine whether a click handler runs and whether the resulting network request succeeds.

Start with a two-minute triage

Do not repeatedly refresh a page before collecting clues. Check the address for a typing error, reload once, and write down the complete message or error code. Then establish the scope of the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the address again and verify the domain, path, and spelling.
  2. Reload once. If the page is frozen, wait briefly for the reload to finish rather than opening many duplicate tabs.
  3. Open another known website in a new tab.
  4. Record whether the problem is a blank page, an explicit connection error, a page that keeps loading, or visible content whose controls do not respond.
What you observe Most useful next comparison What it suggests
Several unrelated websites fail Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the modem/router, and any public Wi-Fi sign-in page A device or network path is more likely than a single site problem
Only one website fails, while other sites work Try that address in another browser and in a private window Browser state, an extension, or a fault at that site becomes more likely
The page loads, but links or buttons do nothing Compare a normal session with Incognito/private browsing and another browser An extension, stored site data, or a site script may be involved
The page works on wired Ethernet but not Wi-Fi Inspect the wireless connection, router, and sign-in or captive portal The wireless path is the important difference

These are diagnostic comparisons, not proofs. A site can be down for some regions while working elsewhere, and a local security product can block one domain without affecting others.

Use the exact browser error as a clue

Chrome error codes describe what the browser observed at one point in the connection. They do not, by themselves, identify the final cause. Use the code to choose the next check rather than treating it as a definitive diagnosis.

Code What Chrome is reporting Checks to make next
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED The device is not connected to the internet. Check the Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, reconnect, and complete a public Wi-Fi sign-in if one is required.
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED The hostname could not be resolved to an address. Check the URL, test another site, and compare another network or browser before assuming the site itself is offline.
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT The connection took too long to complete. Check network stability, try again later, and compare the address from another connection if possible.
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET The connection was interrupted or reset. Consider an unstable network, an outdated browser, a VPN, or security software, then isolate those factors one at a time.
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED The connection was not accepted or was blocked. Test another browser and network; the server may be refusing connections or a local filter may be blocking them.
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE No data was sent back to the browser. Retry after checking other sites. The website may be unavailable, but the code alone cannot prove that.

Capture the code exactly, including underscores and capitalization. A screenshot can help when you later report the issue, but do not include passwords, private messages, or other sensitive information.

Isolate browser state safely

Browser cookies, cached files, extensions, and an exhausted browser process can all change how one site behaves. Chrome’s private mode is a fast comparison because it starts a separate session with a different set of stored data and normally does not load extensions unless you have explicitly allowed them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the browser if an update is offered, then close and reopen it.
  2. Open the same address in an Incognito window. In Chrome, use the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito window.
  3. If the site works in Incognito, return to the normal window and open the extensions manager from the browser menu.
  4. Disable extensions temporarily, reload the site, and then enable extensions one at a time. The first extension after which the problem returns is a strong suspect.
  5. If extensions are not responsible, clear the site’s cookies and stored data, then reload. Use the site-specific data controls when available instead of wiping every site.

Clearing cookies can sign you out, remove shopping carts or saved preferences, and reset other site state. Make sure you know your login method before doing it. Cached files can be cleared when necessary, but clearing them is not a guaranteed fix and may make the first reload slower.

If the page fails in both a normal and Incognito session, try the same address in another installed browser. A failure in every browser points away from one browser profile and toward the network, security software, device, or website.

When the page loads but buttons do not work

A visible page can still depend on JavaScript, third-party services, cookies, or a network request that failed after the initial HTML arrived. Work from the least destructive checks to the most informative comparison.

Checks for everyday users

  1. Reload once and wait for the page to finish loading.
  2. Try the same control in an Incognito or private window.
  3. Try another browser on the same device.
  4. If the control works in one of those tests, disable extensions in the failing browser and repeat the action.
  5. If the control fails in multiple browsers but only on that website, note the exact page, control, and steps that reproduce it.

Use a normal click rather than repeated rapid clicks while testing. If a link opens a new tab, check whether the browser blocked a pop-up; do not lower security settings globally just to make one control work. If a form submits but appears unchanged, look for an inline validation message, a sign-in expiration, or a required field that is off-screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the comparison means

  • Works in private mode but not normal mode: an extension or stored browsing data is the leading line of investigation.
  • Works in another browser on the same device: focus on the original browser’s profile, extensions, cache, or settings.
  • Fails in every browser while other websites work: a script, service, or account problem at that website is plausible; it is not a confirmed diagnosis until the owner checks it.
  • Fails only on one device: compare the device’s security software, date and time settings, browser updates, and available memory with a working device.

Reduce crashes, memory pressure, and security interference

Pages can become unresponsive when the browser or device has little available memory. Close unused tabs, video or web-app sessions, large downloads, and other applications, then reload the affected page. If the browser itself is frozen, close it and restart the device before testing again.

Firewall, antivirus, VPN, and web-filtering software can block a domain, script, or request. Check their event history or permitted-app and website lists for a relevant entry. Do not leave protection disabled as a troubleshooting shortcut. If you must test whether a security product is involved, use its documented, temporary per-site or diagnostic option, restore normal protection immediately, and avoid changing settings you cannot later reverse.

An outdated browser can also interact poorly with modern site code. Install the browser’s normal updates, restart it, and retest before changing experimental flags or advanced security settings. If only one website is affected, a blanket reset of the entire browser is usually less informative than the controlled comparisons above.

Check the connection path

When multiple sites fail, inspect the connection before changing browser data. Confirm that the device shows a connected Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, move closer to the access point if the wireless signal is weak, and restart the modem/router using the manufacturer’s normal procedure. Public networks may require a browser sign-in page before ordinary websites will load.

Comparison How to perform it Interpretation
Wi-Fi versus Ethernet On a compatible device and router, test the same address over Wi-Fi and then with an Ethernet cable. If wired works and Wi-Fi fails, investigate the wireless link or router configuration. The cable is a diagnostic aid, not a fix for a site outage.
Home network versus another network Use a trusted alternate connection, such as a permitted mobile hotspot, only for comparison. If the site works elsewhere, the original network, DNS path, filter, or router is implicated.
One device versus another Open the address on another device using the same network. If only one device fails, focus on its browser, security software, or local settings.

A single website can be unreachable even when your connection is healthy. Do not reset a router or replace network hardware merely because one domain fails. First confirm whether unrelated sites work and whether the failure follows the site across browsers and devices.

Additional comparisons before making major changes

Keep a simple test record so each comparison changes only one variable. Note the browser, device, network type, normal or private session, and result. Comparing Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet is useful only when both tests use the same address and are performed close together; a site may recover between attempts. Likewise, testing another device on the same network separates a local device problem from a network-wide one, while testing the same device on another permitted network separates the home or office path from the browser.

Browser menus and privacy labels differ outside Chrome. Firefox, Safari, Edge, and mobile browsers may use “private,” “in-private,” or similar wording, and their extension behavior is not identical. Use the equivalent private-session and extension controls for that browser rather than assuming Chrome’s menu names or settings apply. The logic remains the same: compare a clean session, then restore normal settings and change one factor at a time.

Do not erase all browsing data, reset the router, or uninstall security software as a first response. Those actions can remove useful evidence, sign you out of unrelated sites, or create a new problem while leaving a website outage unchanged. Preserve the exact message and the time of the failure before taking any destructive step.

Developer branch: inspect a click with Chrome DevTools

The following steps are for developers or technically confident readers. They help distinguish a missing event handler from a handler that runs but produces a failed request.

Reproduce and capture the browser state

  1. Open the failing page and reproduce the action consistently. Record the exact element, expected result, and any required login or input.
  2. Open Chrome DevTools from the browser menu, then keep the Console and Sources panels available.
  3. Clear unrelated Console messages only if doing so helps you see the messages generated by the reproduction; preserve a copy of the original error text first.
  4. Click the control once and check whether a JavaScript exception appears. Note the file, line number, and stack trace.

Pause on the click event

In Sources, open the Event Listener Breakpoints section, expand the Mouse category, and select the click breakpoint. Repeat the action. If execution pauses, inspect the call stack and the element or script that registered the listener. An extension can register a listener too, so the first pause is not automatically your application’s handler; test with extensions disabled when the source is unclear.

Follow the request

If the handler runs, open the Network panel and repeat the action. Look for the request associated with the click and inspect its method, URL, status, timing, and response. A request that never appears suggests a client-side path stopped before the network call. A request with an error status, blocked indication, or failed preflight points to a different problem than a successful response whose data cannot be rendered.

Decide when the website owner should investigate

Contact the site owner when the address fails in another browser or private session, other websites work normally, and the problem is repeatable. Include details that let the owner reproduce it:

  • Exact URL, including the path where the failure occurs
  • Date and approximate time, with your time zone
  • Browser name and device or operating system
  • Whether other websites load normally
  • Whether the problem occurs in a normal session, private session, and another browser
  • The exact error text or code, or the precise button and steps that do nothing
  • Whether the same behavior occurs on another device or network

If the failure affects many unrelated websites, contact your internet provider, network administrator, or the operator of the public Wi-Fi instead. If the page is business-critical, preserve the error details before restarting equipment or deleting browser data; those changes can remove clues.

A compact decision path

Result of your test Next action
URL typo or a one-time loading error Correct the address and reload once.
Many sites fail on one device Check connection status, Wi-Fi/Ethernet, router, and public-network sign-in.
One site fails only in one browser Update and restart that browser; test Incognito, then extensions and site data.
One site fails in every browser but other sites work Check another device or network and report the reproducible issue to the site owner.
Page is visible but controls fail everywhere Report the exact control and steps; developers should inspect Console, click listeners, and Network activity.
Wi-Fi fails but Ethernet works Investigate the wireless signal, router, and network policy rather than browser cookies.

The safest troubleshooting order is to observe, compare, isolate, and only then change settings. It prevents a single website outage from being mistaken for a device failure and avoids weakening security controls or deleting useful evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first when a website will not open?

Verify the URL, reload once, and open another familiar website. If several sites fail, inspect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the router, and any public-network sign-in page. If only one site fails, compare another browser and a private window.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED mean?

Chrome could not resolve the hostname to an address. Check the spelling, try another site, and compare another browser or network. The code is a clue, not proof that the website is offline.

  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Why does a site work in Incognito but not in my normal window?

An extension or stored browsing data is a leading possibility. Disable extensions, reload, and enable them one at a time to find a conflict. If needed, clear only that site’s cookies and data, knowing this may sign you out or remove saved state.

What if buttons do nothing but the page is visible?

Reload once, test the control in a private session and another browser, and check for extension interference. If it fails in multiple browsers only on that site, record the exact page, control, and repeatable steps for the site owner.

Should I turn off antivirus or my firewall to test the website?

Do not leave protection disabled. Check its event history or permitted-site list, and use only a documented temporary per-site or diagnostic option if available. Restore normal protection immediately after the comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an Ethernet cable fix a website that will not load?

It is a diagnostic aid. Testing the same address over Ethernet and Wi-Fi can show whether the wireless path is involved. It will not fix a single-site outage or a broken click handler.

When should I contact the website owner?

Contact the owner when the problem is repeatable, other sites work, and the address still fails in another browser or private session. Include the exact URL, time zone, browser and device, error text, session comparisons, and reproduction steps.

How can a developer find out why a click does nothing?

Reproduce it in Chrome DevTools, check Console for exceptions, set a Sources click event-listener breakpoint, and inspect the Network request triggered by the handler. An extension may register a listener, so repeat the test with extensions disabled when the call stack is unclear.

The Bottom Line

Check the URL, determine whether one site or many are affected, and record the exact error before changing anything. Compare normal and private sessions, browsers, devices, and—when useful—Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Disable extensions one at a time, protect your security settings, and clear only site data you understand. If a repeatable problem survives those comparisons, send the site owner precise reproduction details; developers can use DevTools to trace the click handler and its network request.
