Anti-cheat support must be enabled and configured by the game’s developer. Proton can run a supported implementation, but it cannot add the developer-side configuration that a title lacks. Work through the checks below in order: identify the exact failure, confirm the game’s Deck category and recent updates, verify its files, test the Proton version documented by the publisher, remove launch-time variables, and then apply the correct Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye guidance. If the developer has not enabled support, a Windows installation on the Deck or a supported streaming route may be the only practical options.
First, determine what is actually failing
“Anti-cheat failed” can describe several different points in the startup process. A launcher may open and reject the session, the game may close before its menu appears, or Steam may report a compatibility error without ever starting the executable. Those distinctions matter because a missing developer configuration cannot be repaired by file verification, while a damaged runtime file often can.

Record the failure before changing settings
Write down the exact wording of the message, the anti-cheat product named in it, and the last screen you can reach. Note whether the game reaches its launcher, displays a splash screen, or exits immediately. Also record whether the problem began after a game update, a SteamOS update, a Proton change, or the installation of a mod or overlay. A screenshot is useful when the message disappears quickly.
- Product named: Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, another middleware component, or no product at all.
- Startup point: before the launcher, at the launcher, after selecting a server or match, or at the main menu.
- Recent change: game patch, SteamOS update, Proton selection, launch option, overlay, injected mod, or none.
- Repeatability: every launch, only online play, or only a particular mode or server.
Do not start by deleting compatibility data or changing several settings at once. You need a clean baseline so that a later successful launch identifies the cause rather than merely changing it.

Check the game’s Deck category and current support status
Open the game’s Steam store or library entry and read its Steam Deck compatibility category before forcing a different Proton build. Valve uses four categories:

Valve’s Verified system-support criterion requires Proton games to support all required middleware, including anti-cheat. Therefore, a title marked Verified should not normally fail because its anti-cheat is fundamentally unavailable to Proton. A Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown label calls for more caution, especially after a major game patch.
Read the game’s update notes
Check the publisher’s latest patch notes, support page, and Steam announcements for Deck, Proton, Easy Anti-Cheat, or BattlEye changes. Anti-cheat runtimes and Proton fixes can arrive in ordinary game or SteamOS updates, so an old status page may not describe the current build. Conversely, a new anti-cheat rollout can temporarily break a title that worked previously. Record the game version and the date of the last relevant update when you contact support.
Install updates before changing Proton
Bring the game, Steam client, and SteamOS to their current offered versions. An anti-cheat component is often delivered as part of the game or its runtime, and Proton compatibility fixes are distributed through Steam and SteamOS updates. Restart the Deck after updates complete so that a newly installed runtime is actually loaded.
- Let Steam finish every pending download for the affected game.
- Install any available SteamOS update through the Deck’s system update control.
- Restart the Deck, even if Steam does not insist on a restart.
- Launch the game once without changing compatibility settings. If the message has changed, capture the new wording before proceeding.
If the game broke immediately after an update, do not assume the update is permanently incompatible. Check the publisher’s announcements and Steam discussions for a known regression, and preserve the exact version information for a support request.

Verify the game files
A partial download or corrupted anti-cheat runtime can produce a failure that looks like a Proton problem. Steam includes a file-integrity check that replaces missing or damaged files without requiring a full reinstall.
- Open your Steam Library and select the affected game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart the Deck, then perform one clean launch with no custom options or overlays.
Verification can report that files were reacquired. That result confirms a file mismatch, but it does not prove that the title supports anti-cheat on Proton. If verification completes without changes and the same anti-cheat message returns, continue with the compatibility checks instead of repeating the scan.

Test Proton deliberately, not randomly
Use the Proton version documented by the game’s publisher whenever one is specified. A publisher may identify a particular Valve Proton release, Proton Experimental, or a community Proton build as the known-good configuration for its title. Select it from the game’s compatibility settings, launch once, and record the result.
What changing Proton can and cannot do
A different Proton build can contain a regression fix, a newer Windows compatibility layer, or a runtime change that lets an already-supported anti-cheat implementation start. It cannot supply a missing developer-side enablement, alter the title’s server policy, or make an unsupported anti-cheat driver compatible by itself. Treat an alternate build as a controlled diagnostic test, not as a universal fix.

After each test, return to a clean launch. Do not combine a Proton change with a launch option, overlay, mod, and graphics tweak in the same attempt; if the game starts, you will not know which change mattered.

Remove launch options, overlays, and injected modifications
Anti-cheat software may reject a process altered by an injected overlay, a mod loader, or an unrecognized launch parameter. Even a harmless option can change the startup path enough to expose a compatibility bug.
- Open the game’s Properties and inspect the Launch Options field.
- Copy any existing text somewhere safe, then clear the field for the test.
- Disable nonessential overlays and performance tools, including those that inject into the game process.
- Temporarily remove mods, custom DLLs, reshade-style injectors, and third-party launchers that are not required by the publisher.
- Start the game directly from Steam and test the same mode that previously failed.
If the clean launch works, re-enable one item at a time and test after each change. The first item that recreates the error is the likely conflict. Keep the working configuration documented so a future game or SteamOS update can be compared against it.
Easy Anti-Cheat on Steam Deck
Easy Anti-Cheat support is not automatic for every game that uses the service. Valve’s Steamworks documentation states: “Proton supports Easy Anti-Cheat without requiring any recompilation, but it does require you to manually enable support for your build.” In practical terms, the developer must enable the Proton-compatible support for the specific game and deploy the appropriate configuration. Installing Proton or switching to a newer build cannot perform that enablement on the developer’s behalf.
How to interpret an Easy Anti-Cheat error
- If the title is Verified and the error appeared after an update, treat it as a possible regression or damaged runtime. Update, verify files, restart, and check the publisher’s notices.
- If the title is Playable or Unknown, look for a publisher statement confirming Proton support and any required Proton version.
- If the title is Unsupported and the publisher has not announced Proton enablement, repeated Proton changes are unlikely to help.
When support is documented, follow the publisher’s exact launch instructions and test with a clean process. When it is not documented, ask the publisher whether Easy Anti-Cheat has been enabled for the game’s Proton build and whether a particular game branch is supported.
BattlEye on Steam Deck
BattlEye also requires a developer-side step for each title. Valve states that every BattlEye title needs a manual configuration step. The fact that one BattlEye game works on Deck does not establish that another BattlEye game is configured for Proton.

Work through a BattlEye failure
- Confirm that the game publisher explicitly lists Deck or Proton support for the title, not merely BattlEye support on Windows.
- Install current game and SteamOS updates, then verify the files.
- Use the Proton build named by the publisher, if any.
- Remove launch options, overlays, and injected modifications and retest.
- If the message persists, ask the publisher whether BattlEye has been configured for this title’s Proton build and whether online modes are supported.
A BattlEye runtime error with no publisher confirmation is a support-status question, not evidence that your Deck installation is defective. Only the developer can complete the per-title configuration.
Use a comparison checklist for the specific game
Fill in these five facts before deciding whether more troubleshooting is worthwhile. They separate a local problem from an absent support path.

Branch your troubleshooting by symptom
The game never reaches its launcher
Start with updates, file verification, and a clean launch. Then test the documented Proton build. If the anti-cheat message appears before any game window and the title lacks a Proton-support statement, stop treating graphics settings as the primary suspect and ask the publisher about enablement.
The launcher opens, but online play is blocked
This pattern can mean that the offline executable runs while the online anti-cheat handshake is not supported. Confirm the title’s Deck category and the publisher’s online-support statement. Test without overlays or mods, because the online service may reject process injection even when the launcher itself opens.

Capture the new error, install any follow-up updates, verify files, and check the publisher’s announcements for a regression. If the title is normally Verified, report the change to the publisher and Steam Support with the old and new versions. Avoid deleting working settings until you have recorded them.

The game works after switching Proton, then fails again
Record the exact Proton build that worked and remove every other custom variable. A temporary success can indicate a Proton regression or a runtime mismatch, but it does not prove that any Proton build will remain compatible. Follow the publisher’s documented build when one becomes available.
What to send to the publisher or Steam Support
A precise report is more actionable than “anti-cheat does not work.” Include:
- Game name, installed game version, SteamOS version, and Deck model if the publisher requests it.
- The Deck compatibility category and the date you observed it.
- The exact anti-cheat message and whether the launcher or main menu appeared.
- Whether the problem began after a game, SteamOS, or Proton update.
- The Proton build tested, including the publisher-documented build if one exists.
- Whether file verification changed anything.
- Confirmation that launch options, overlays, mods, and injected tools were disabled for the clean test.
- Whether offline play works while online play fails.
Ask a focused question: is this title’s Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye configuration enabled for Proton, and which Proton build and game branch does the publisher support? If the answer is no, further local tweaking cannot supply the missing configuration.

When support is absent
If the publisher confirms that the anti-cheat is not enabled for Proton, or provides no supported Deck configuration for an Unsupported title, choose a supported path instead of repeatedly changing compatibility settings.
Use Windows on the Deck
A Windows installation can provide the environment the publisher supports, subject to the game’s licensing, anti-cheat policy, hardware requirements, and your willingness to manage a separate operating system. This is a change of platform environment, not a fix to Proton.
Use remote or cloud streaming
Streaming from a supported Windows machine or service can avoid running the anti-cheat client locally on SteamOS. Availability, latency, controller support, account requirements, and the game’s terms determine whether this is practical. Confirm that the publisher permits the arrangement before relying on it.
Wait for a developer update
Keep the game installed and monitor the publisher’s patch notes or Steam announcements for explicit Proton or Deck enablement. A future update may add the required configuration, but no general fix-rate percentage or guaranteed release schedule exists. Until the developer enables and supports the middleware, a different Proton build cannot make the title compliant.
A disciplined order that minimizes wasted time
- Capture the exact error, startup point, and recent-change history.
- Check the Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown category and read its notes.
- Install game, Steam, and SteamOS updates, then restart the Deck.
- Verify integrity through Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Use the publisher-documented Proton build; test Experimental or a community build only as a controlled diagnostic.
- Clear launch options and disable overlays, injected mods, and other nonessential tweaks.
- Apply the middleware-specific rule: Easy Anti-Cheat requires manual developer enablement, and each BattlEye title requires manual configuration.
- Escalate with the recorded evidence. If support is absent, use a permitted Windows or streaming route or wait for a developer update.
This sequence tells you whether the failure is local and repairable, build-specific, or a limitation that only the game’s developer can remove.
