Work from the appliance outward: confirm that the exact model supports app connectivity and is in its documented pairing mode, then check its required Wi‑Fi band and security, re-enter the exact network name and password, test signal at the appliance, verify router and app status, and reconfigure the saved network if your router or credentials changed. Restart or reset Wi‑Fi only with the manufacturer’s instructions; a reset sequence that is safe for one model can erase settings on another.
First, identify what “won’t connect” actually means
A failed connection can occur at several different points. The appliance might not support app control, might not be listening for setup, might reject an incompatible network, might fail authentication because of a mistyped password, or might be connected locally while its companion app cannot reach the vendor’s cloud service. Treating every symptom as a password problem leads to unnecessary resets.

| What you see | Most relevant cause category | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| The appliance does not appear during setup | Pairing mode, app permissions, band compatibility, or signal | Confirm the model’s setup mode and requirements in its manual; then check whether the required network is visible at the appliance. |
| The appliance sees your network but rejects it | SSID, password, security, or addressing requirement | Re-enter the exact network name and password, then compare the router configuration with the model’s documented requirements. |
| Setup starts but stops partway through | Phone hand-off, temporary appliance network, permissions, or weak signal | Follow the app’s complete pairing flow, including any prompt to join a temporary appliance network or scan a QR code. |
| The app says Offline after setup | Local Wi‑Fi connection or cloud/app communication | Refresh the app and check the appliance’s own network indicator before repeating pairing. |
| The router or Wi‑Fi password was changed | The appliance still has the old saved network | Use the app’s change-network function or the model-specific Wi‑Fi reconfiguration procedure. |
| A nearby phone sees the network but the appliance does not | Unsupported band/security, inadequate signal at the appliance, or appliance radio fault | Check the manual’s network requirements and signal at the installation location; escalate if the appliance still cannot detect a suitable network. |
Keep the appliance manual, exact model number, companion-app name, router model, and the approximate distance between router and appliance available. Those details determine which instructions apply.

Verify that this exact model is app-capable
Look for the connected-appliance symbol, a model-specific statement in the manual, or a supported-device list in the manufacturer’s app. Two appliances that look alike can have different radios or different setup procedures. Do not assume that an appliance with a display, Bluetooth, or a smartphone app for recipes necessarily supports Wi‑Fi control.

Put the appliance into its documented setup mode
Most connected appliances must be placed in a Wi‑Fi, remote-start, or pairing mode before the app can find them. The mode may be enabled by holding a button, selecting a menu item, scanning a QR code, or allowing the appliance to create a temporary network. The exact action is model-specific. Whirlpool’s connected-appliance guidance, for example, directs owners through its app and a model-appropriate pairing flow; use that as an example of a manufacturer process, not a universal button sequence (Whirlpool’s connected-appliance setup instructions).
Keep the appliance powered during the entire enrollment process. If it is a washer, oven, dishwasher, or other high-power device, make sure it is in the state the manual requires for remote features; some models will not accept pairing while running a cycle or with a door open.
Recommended Free Tools
Prepare the setup phone exactly as instructed
Install the current companion app from the official app store, sign in if required, and grant the permissions the app requests for setup. Depending on the model, the app may need permission to discover nearby devices, use Bluetooth, access the local network, or switch temporarily to an appliance-generated network. Keep mobile data available only if the instructions call for it; some setup flows fail when the phone silently switches away from the appliance’s temporary network.
Remain close to the appliance while pairing. If the app tells you to join another network, return to the app after doing so rather than starting a second setup attempt.
2. Match the appliance’s Wi‑Fi requirements
Check the required frequency band
There is no universal smart-appliance Wi‑Fi standard for frequency. LG ThinQ states that its appliances use 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, while Samsung warns that network requirements vary between devices. Whirlpool lists 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n among the basic requirements in its connected-appliance guidance. Read the manual for your model before changing router settings (LG ThinQ Wi‑Fi and smartphone setup, published April 28, 2025; Samsung SmartThings device connection guidance).

If the model requires 2.4 GHz, make that band available during setup. A dual-band router may broadcast one network name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, leaving the phone or appliance to choose automatically. If the appliance cannot complete setup on a combined network, consult the router’s instructions or its support provider for a temporary way to identify or separate the bands. Do not permanently disable a band unless you understand which other devices will be affected.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Whirlpool explicitly says that its cited microwave setup flow will not work with a 5 GHz network. That is a model-and-flow-specific statement, not evidence that every smart appliance rejects 5 GHz.
Compare security and addressing requirements
Some appliance documentation specifies a security mode or IP protocol. Whirlpool’s basic connected-appliance requirements include WPA2 and IPv4, in addition to 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n. Samsung’s support material instead emphasizes checking the individual device because requirements differ. If your router is configured for a newer, mixed, enterprise, or unusual security mode, verify that the appliance supports it before changing anything.
A home appliance generally expects a normal home network with DHCP addressing. Avoid guessing at static-IP, guest-network, captive-portal, or enterprise settings. A guest network that isolates devices can allow internet access while preventing the phone, appliance, and cloud service from communicating as the manufacturer expects.
Use the manual’s network name guidance
Some appliances cannot handle hidden network names, unusual characters, or a network that requires a browser sign-in. The manual should tell you whether those conditions are supported. Do not rename the whole home network as a first step; first determine whether the appliance actually rejects the current configuration.
3. Re-enter the exact network name and password
Read the SSID, or Wi‑Fi network name, from the router or phone rather than relying on memory. Enter it exactly, including capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and any characters that look similar. Then enter the current Wi‑Fi password, not the router’s administrator password or the password printed on an old label.

Whirlpool describes an “Unable to Connect” message as a failure to connect to the home router and says an incorrectly entered passphrase or password normally causes that message in its guidance (Whirlpool connected-appliance app troubleshooting). That explanation applies to the cited Whirlpool status, not to every manufacturer’s error text.
Test the credentials without changing them
- On a phone or laptop near the appliance, forget the saved Wi‑Fi network if necessary.
- Join the same SSID again and type the password manually.
- Confirm that the device reaches the internet, not merely the router’s local network.
- Use the verified SSID and password in the appliance app.
If the phone cannot join, fix the router credentials or network configuration first. If the phone joins but the appliance rejects the same details, return to the model’s band, security, and pairing requirements instead of repeatedly typing the password.
4. Test signal where the appliance is installed
Signal beside the router does not prove that coverage is adequate behind a refrigerator, inside a utility room, or across several walls. Check the Wi‑Fi connection at the appliance’s actual location with a phone. Note walls, metal surfaces, floors, cabinets, and large appliances between the router and the device; distance and obstacles can weaken the connection.
Improve coverage without introducing a new variable
- Move the router to a more open, central position if practical.
- During setup, move the phone and, when safe and feasible, the appliance closer to the router.
- Retry pairing only after confirming that the required band is available at the appliance.
A compatible repeater or range extender is relevant only when the evidence points to weak coverage. Samsung suggests a repeater for weak signal, and LG discusses a Wi‑Fi amplifier or range extender in the same context (Samsung SmartThings connection troubleshooting; LG ThinQ setup guidance). An extender cannot correct a wrong password, an unsupported frequency or security mode, a blocked pairing flow, or a defective appliance radio.
If you add coverage equipment, give it a distinct, documented network name during testing if the appliance’s manual recommends that approach. Confirm that the extender itself has internet access and that it does not isolate the appliance from the phone or required cloud service.
5. Verify the router and internet connection
Connect another device to the same network near the appliance and open several websites or services. If nothing has internet access, troubleshoot the router or modem and the internet service before working on the appliance. A router can broadcast a network name while its connection to the internet is down.

Check for router features that can block setup, such as client isolation, access-control lists, a captive portal, or a schedule that disables the band overnight. Do not change advanced settings blindly. Ask the router maker or internet provider which settings are supported for a small household IoT device, and restore any temporary test change after the diagnosis.

Restarting the appliance and phone at the same time can make it difficult to tell which change helped, so change one layer at a time.
6. Distinguish local Wi‑Fi from app or cloud status
An app label such as Offline does not always mean that the appliance never joined Wi‑Fi. The appliance may be connected to the local network while the app is signed out, stale, unable to reach the vendor’s cloud, or waiting for a service refresh. Whirlpool notes that an offline app status can represent either a missing Wi‑Fi connection or a failure to interact with Whirlpool Cloud (Whirlpool app troubleshooting).
Use a short status check
- Refresh the companion app and confirm that you are signed in to the account that enrolled the appliance.
- Check the appliance’s Wi‑Fi icon, network menu, or documented status indicator.
- Confirm that another phone or computer on the same home network has internet access.
- Try the app again after the router and appliance have been online for several minutes.
If the appliance indicates a local connection but the app remains offline, repeating Wi‑Fi enrollment may erase a working local configuration. Follow the manufacturer’s app-status troubleshooting path first and check for a service outage or account issue through the official support channel.
7. Reconfigure the saved network after router changes
Replacing a router, changing the SSID, or changing the Wi‑Fi password does not automatically update an appliance’s saved credentials. The appliance may continue trying to join the old network even though phones have moved to the new one.

Open the companion app and look for a label such as Change network, Update Wi‑Fi, Product network, or Set up device again. If the app cannot find the appliance, use the manual’s Wi‑Fi-reset or re-registration procedure, then complete pairing from the beginning. LG’s ThinQ support specifically directs users with a replaced router to change the product network registered in the app and follow the on-screen Wi‑Fi reset steps (LG ThinQ support).

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Restart in a controlled order
After correcting the likely cause, use a simple restart sequence rather than cycling everything repeatedly:
- Close the companion app completely and reopen it.
- Confirm that the router has finished booting and that another device has internet access.
- Power-cycle the appliance only as its manual permits. Do not unplug a device during a cooking cycle, a firmware update, or another state where power loss could be unsafe.
- Return the appliance to its documented pairing mode and retry once.
If the router, phone, and appliance all work separately but pairing still fails, stop repeating the same sequence. Move to the model-specific reset instructions or support escalation instead of assuming that more restarts will repair an incompatible configuration.
9. Reset Wi‑Fi only with model-specific instructions
There is no safe universal button combination for clearing an appliance’s Wi‑Fi settings. A long press might reset only networking on one model, while the same action could erase cooking programs, user data, or other settings on another. Samsung’s support guidance directs owners to the appliance-specific process, and its general connection article again notes that requirements vary by device (Samsung home-appliance SmartThings connection guidance).
Before resetting, write down the SSID, password, account email, appliance model, and any schedules you may need to restore. Read the manual’s warnings and expected indicator lights. After the reset, allow the appliance to finish restarting, put it into pairing mode, and enroll it as a new network device using the official app.
Targeted fixes by failure point
The appliance cannot see any network
- Confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled on the appliance and that it is in setup mode.
- Check whether the model supports the band being broadcast.
- Test signal at the appliance, not only at the router.
- If a phone sees a suitable network at the same location but the appliance sees none, contact appliance support; the radio, firmware, or setup state may be at fault.
The appliance sees the SSID but rejects the password
- Re-enter the exact SSID and password.
- Verify the phone can join that SSID with the same credentials.
- Compare router security and IP requirements with the manual.
- Check that the network is not a captive-portal or isolated guest network.
The app cannot find an appliance that is ready
- Confirm the app has the permissions required for nearby-device and local-network discovery.
- Keep the phone close and follow any prompt to join a temporary appliance network.
- Disable automatic switching to another saved network during setup if the phone keeps leaving the appliance network.
- Restart the app, then repeat the documented pairing flow once.
The appliance connected before but went offline
- Check whether the router, SSID, password, or security settings changed.
- Refresh the app and compare its status with the appliance’s own Wi‑Fi indicator.
- Check router internet access and signal at the appliance.
- Use the app’s change-network flow if the saved network is obsolete.
It works near the router but not in its final position
- Measure coverage at the installation location and account for walls and metal surfaces.
- Improve router placement or use a compatible extender only after confirming a coverage problem.
- Keep the same verified credentials and compatible band while testing; changing several variables hides the cause.
When to contact support
Contact the appliance manufacturer when the exact model cannot detect a network that another nearby device can see, when the documented pairing mode never appears, when a reset fails, or when the appliance remains offline after the model’s setup checks. Contact the router maker or internet provider when other devices cannot obtain internet access, the required band or security mode cannot be enabled, or router isolation and access-control settings are unclear.
Give support a concise record:
- Full appliance model and purchase region.
- Companion-app name and phone operating system.
- Router model, SSID band, and security mode, if known.
- The exact on-screen error or indicator pattern.
- Whether another device can join the same SSID at the appliance’s location.
- Whether the router, SSID, or password changed recently.
- Which documented steps you completed and whether the app or appliance reports local connectivity.
This information helps support separate an appliance fault from a credentials, compatibility, coverage, configuration, or internet-service problem without asking you to repeat unrelated resets.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every appliance uses 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Check the exact manual; manufacturer requirements differ.
- Testing only beside the router. The relevant signal is where the appliance is installed.
- Buying an extender before proving weak coverage. Coverage equipment cannot fix credentials or an unsupported network.
- Confusing the Wi‑Fi password with the router-admin password. The appliance needs the SSID’s joining password.
- Repeating enrollment after an app-only outage. Refresh and distinguish cloud status from local Wi‑Fi first.
- Using a generic reset sequence. Clear Wi‑Fi only through the model’s instructions.
- Changing several router settings at once. Make one documented change, test, and record the result.
A compact decision sequence
For a disciplined diagnosis, proceed in this order and stop when the symptom is resolved:
- Identify the exact model and official app.
- Confirm power, connectivity support, pairing mode, and required phone permissions.
- Check the required Wi‑Fi band, security, IP, and network-name conditions.
- Verify the SSID and password on another device, then enter them exactly.
- Check signal and internet access at the appliance’s location.
- Refresh the app and separate local connection from cloud status.
- Reconfigure the saved network if the router or credentials changed.
- Restart using the manual’s safe procedure.
- Reset Wi‑Fi only with model-specific instructions.
- Escalate with the model, error, network details, and completed steps.
This order addresses configuration and compatibility before hardware failure, and it reserves an extender or a reset for the conditions where each can actually help.
