PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a self-hosted app works on your computer but not your phone, first try the same exact URL on both devices while they are on the same network. Then isolate the failure in order: network reachability, DNS, HTTPS certificate trust, browser requests, and finally the app. If switching the phone between Wi-Fi and cellular changes the result, investigate routing, VPN or DNS settings, firewall rules, port forwarding, and router NAT loopback.
Start by pinning down what fails
Record the full address, including http or https, hostname, port, and path. Note the phone model and operating system, browser, network (Wi-Fi, cellular, or VPN), and whether the whole page fails or only a feature such as login or live updates. Change only the phone’s network and try again. A changed result points toward a network or name-resolution difference, but does not identify the specific cause by itself.

- Does the same phone behave differently on Wi-Fi and cellular?
- Does another browser on the phone behave differently?
- Does the desktop still work when using the same hostname and network as the phone?
Check that the address is reachable from the phone
Understand localhost and private addresses
localhost refers to the device making the request. On a phone, it means the phone itself—not your home server or desktop. A private LAN address or local-only hostname generally works only when the phone has a route to that server, such as on the same Wi-Fi or through a properly configured VPN.
For same-Wi-Fi testing, use the server’s reachable LAN address and confirm the service listens on the expected network interface and port. A service bound only to its own loopback interface will not accept connections from other devices. For cellular access, a private address will not become reachable merely because the app works on the home network: the phone needs a VPN or secure tunnel with a route to the server, or a deliberately configured public route.

Distinguish public access from access inside your home
If you use a public hostname from inside the home network, compare the result from home Wi-Fi with the result over cellular. Some routers do not support, or are not configured for, NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT), which lets an inside client reach a public address that routes back into the local network. Router behavior varies. Google Nest Wifi’s NAT loopback guidance describes this function, while its port-forwarding guidance explains forwarding outside traffic to a selected device on the home network.
Do not expose an administrative page or app to the public internet as a diagnostic shortcut. Before configuring public access, verify authentication, TLS, firewall scope, and the app’s exposure model.

Compare DNS answers and network routing
Typing the same hostname on two devices does not guarantee that they connect to the same server. A phone may use a VPN-provided resolver, private DNS, browser secure DNS, or a different local network policy. A local resolver may intentionally return a private LAN address while a public resolver returns a public address. Cloudflare’s resolver setup instructions show that DNS can be configured at the network level or separately in browsers.
Before changing DNS, record the hostname and the destination each device uses. If the hostname resolves to a LAN address, that can be correct on Wi-Fi and unsuitable on cellular. If you intend to use split DNS, check both the records and the routes that should accompany them; changing a resolver alone cannot create network reachability.

Read the complete HTTPS error
Capture the exact browser or TLS error rather than describing the symptom only as “doesn’t load.” Check that the certificate is active, covers the exact hostname in the URL, and is served with its required certificate chain. Cloudflare’s TLS handshake troubleshooting guide lists certificate activation, hostname coverage, cipher compatibility, and network interference as possible considerations, and recommends testing another network and collecting the browser error.
When a phone does not trust the certificate
Android’s network security guidance identifies an unknown certificate authority, a self-signed certificate, and a missing intermediate certificate as possible TLS failure causes. Do not “fix” the problem by disabling certificate validation. Use a correctly configured certificate chain and an appropriate trust configuration.

For controlled iOS testing with a private test certificate authority, Apple’s archived QA1948 says an installed root certificate must also be enabled in Settings > General > About > Certificate Trust Settings. For ordinary use, a publicly trusted certificate configured for the app’s hostname is usually simpler and safer than distributing a private root certificate.

- An API URL points to the wrong hostname or to a private address the phone cannot reach.
- A request targets
localhost, which means the phone rather than the server. - An HTTPS page tries to open a WebSocket over
ws://. - The browser reports a CORS or mixed-content block.
- A redirect sends the phone to a hostname or address unavailable on its current network.
- A browser blocks a request to a local or loopback network target.
Local-network request policies and permissions depend on browser version and request context. The Local Network Access draft describes permission controls for websites connecting to local and loopback targets; MDN’s local network access reference explains address-space classification and related policy behavior. Treat this as a hypothesis to verify against the exact console or network error, not as a diagnosis based only on the page being mobile.

A short, comparable record helps separate DNS, connection, TLS, redirect, and application failures. Capture the phone and desktop under the conditions that reproduce the issue, and redact secrets before sharing traces.
- Timestamp, exact URL, phone network, and whether a VPN or private DNS is active.
- Phone OS and browser versions, plus the complete error text.
- Whether the document fails or a specific API, WebSocket, or other request fails.
- The request’s destination, status or browser error, and any redirect before failure.
For Android Chrome, Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guide describes USB debugging and chrome://inspect/#devices for remote browser inspection. You can also capture the failed request in desktop browser developer tools and export a HAR when appropriate; Cloudflare’s guide links to iPhone-specific HAR instructions. Compare the mobile trace with a working desktop request to find the first point where they differ. Remove credentials, cookies, tokens, and private response data before sharing logs.
Use a controlled comparison to narrow the layer
| Comparison | What it helps isolate |
|---|---|
| Phone on the same Wi-Fi as the working desktop | Cellular routing versus a phone-specific or browser-specific issue |
| Phone on Wi-Fi versus cellular or VPN | Private addressing, routes, firewall policy, resolver differences, or public access configuration |
| LAN address/local name versus public hostname | Local routing, split DNS, and NAT loopback behavior |
| Device DNS versus browser secure DNS or VPN DNS | Whether the hostname resolves to different destinations |
| Initial document versus one failed API, WebSocket, or embedded request | Whether the problem is basic reachability or a secondary app feature |
| Same phone in another browser, or same browser on another device | Whether the difference follows the browser, device, or network |
Work from the earliest failure in the request path. If the phone cannot reach the server, app-level debugging will not fix the route. If the document loads but a single request fails, focus on that request’s address, transport, policy message, and response rather than changing the server’s general network setup.
