Post-update problems can have several causes: an incomplete or pending app update, a downloaded app that is no longer compatible, background activity while data is being restored, or a problem that is not caused by software at all. The sequence below moves from reversible checks to diagnostic tests and only then to data-erasing recovery.

Why a Galaxy can act differently after an update
An update changes system components and can also trigger updates to individual apps. A previously installed app may crash until its developer releases a compatible version. Restoring a large amount of photos, messages, or other data can temporarily increase processor activity, battery use, and device temperature. Samsung also notes that 5G phones may use more power because they maintain 3G or LTE connectivity alongside 5G to keep calls, messages, and data reliable.

Those possibilities do not explain every case. A battery graph and Safe mode test are more useful than assuming the update itself is defective. If the phone is hot, losing charge rapidly while idle, repeatedly rebooting, or unable to start, move through the checks below and record what changes after each one.
Separate a one-app failure from a system-wide failure
Notice the scope before changing anything. If only one app crashes while the rest of the interface works, update that app and note its background activity. If Settings, the home screen, several unrelated apps, or the lock screen freeze, treat it as a broader performance problem and continue through the full sequence. A battery complaint also needs context: compare the time period shown in Battery usage with your normal use, and distinguish a brief warm period during restoration from drain that continues after restoration is finished.
1. Install every available system and app update
Check the Galaxy software update
- Open Settings.
- Open the section named Software update or a similar update entry, then choose Download and install or the equivalent option.
- Allow the phone to check for an update. Install it if one is offered, keeping the phone connected to power when practical.
Samsung says the wording and location can differ by model and carrier. If the phone reports that it is current, continue rather than repeatedly checking.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Update apps from both stores
- Open Google Play Store, open your account menu, and install available app updates.
- Open Galaxy Store and check its updates as well.
Updating apps before changing battery restrictions is important: an old app can continue crashing or running in the background even when the phone software is current. If one particular app fails, check whether its own update is pending before uninstalling it.
2. Restart the phone and recover an unresponsive screen
Normal restart
Close apps from the recent-apps screen, then restart from the power menu. A fresh boot clears temporary processes and is a useful first check after installing updates. Once the phone returns to the lock screen, use it normally for a few minutes before changing several settings at once; that makes it easier to identify which step helped.
Forced restart for a frozen display
If taps and the power menu do nothing, Samsung’s U.S. frozen-screen guidance says devices without a dedicated Power button can usually be forced to restart by holding Volume Down and the Side button together for 7–10 seconds. Button combinations vary, so use the combination documented for your model if this does not work. A forced restart is not a factory reset and should not delete your files.
Optimize general performance
After the phone starts, open Settings and look for Device care (the name can vary). Run its optimization check if available and close apps that are not needed. Device care can point out storage, battery, or background-activity issues, but do not treat an optimization score as a diagnosis. Continue to Battery usage and Safe mode if the symptom returns.

3. Find the cause of battery drain in Battery usage
Identify the app or service using power
- Open Settings.
- Open Battery, then choose Battery usage or View details.
- Review the period that includes the unusual drain. Look for an app with high foreground or background activity, and compare it with your normal use.
The exact graph and labels vary. The point is to identify a specific consumer before applying restrictions. A warm phone immediately after restoring a large backup can be temporary; continuing heat and rapid loss after restoration has finished deserve closer inspection.
Apply targeted background limits
After updating the suspected app, use Samsung’s available controls to put infrequently used apps to sleep or restrict their background activity. You can also enable Power saving mode. Some Galaxy models offer a Light performance profile; where present, it reduces performance demands to favor efficiency. These settings can delay notifications or background synchronization, so apply them to nonessential apps first and test the result.
Interpret 5G and restoration activity correctly
5G connectivity can consume more battery because the phone may maintain another network connection alongside 5G. Likewise, a large data restoration can temporarily raise battery use and temperature. Samsung lists both as possible contributors, not as proof that they are responsible for your case. Battery usage details should show whether a network service, restoration process, or particular app is actually active.
Use a repeatable battery check
After making one targeted change, restart if appropriate and observe the same kind of use that exposed the problem. For example, if the phone lost charge while idle, check it again while idle rather than judging only from a long gaming session. Keep a short note of the date, top Battery usage entries, temperature, and whether the phone was restoring data. This record helps you avoid mistaking normal variation for a fix and gives Samsung useful evidence if service is needed.
4. Test the phone in Safe mode
What Safe mode changes
Safe mode starts the original device software while disabling downloaded apps. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent operating mode. Your downloaded apps are not removed; they are simply unavailable until you restart normally.
Enter Safe mode
Samsung’s entry steps vary by device interface. On many recent Galaxy phones, open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, and tap Safe mode when that option appears. If your interface does not show that choice, follow the Safe mode instructions for your exact model. A Safe mode label should appear on screen after startup.
Use the result as a branch in the diagnosis
- The problem stops in Safe mode: a downloaded app is a likely contributor. Restart normally, then remove or update apps installed or updated just before the trouble began. Test after each change instead of removing many apps simultaneously.
- The problem continues in Safe mode: downloaded apps may not be the cause. Continue with backup, reset considerations, or service escalation rather than repeatedly deleting apps.
Test the same symptom you saw before: open the apps that crashed, watch for freezing, and check whether idle battery loss remains abnormal. Safe mode cannot prove that an app is harmless; it only shows whether the disabled downloaded-app layer is involved.

Why the timing of an app matters
List apps installed or updated immediately before the first freeze, crash, or drain. Include launchers, keyboard tools, battery managers, and other utilities, not just the app that visibly crashed. A background component can affect the system without appearing to be the foreground failure. Work from the newest change backward, and make one change at a time so the Safe mode result remains useful.

5. Remove or isolate a suspect app without losing track of the cause
When Safe mode points to downloaded software, make a short list of changes made immediately before the issue: newly installed apps, recently updated apps, launchers, keyboard tools, battery managers, or apps with extensive background permissions. Start with the most recent change.
- Restart into normal mode.
- Update the suspect app if an update is available.
- If the symptom remains, uninstall that app or disable it where the phone permits.
- Restart and test the phone under the same conditions.
- Repeat one app at a time only if necessary.
Removing an app can delete data stored only inside that app, so check its own backup or account options first. If no single app explains the behavior and the problem returns even after several changes, stop treating app removal as the solution and proceed to the next diagnostic level.
6. Run Samsung Members diagnostics when the phone is usable
Samsung’s performance guidance includes diagnostics in the Samsung Members app. If your Galaxy can stay responsive long enough, open Samsung Members and look for the phone or device diagnostics area. Run the available tests and save any result or error code. Menus and test availability depend on model and region.
Diagnostics can provide useful evidence for a service request, but a passed test does not rule out an intermittent software problem. Combine the result with your Battery usage history, the Safe mode outcome, and a description of when the freezing or crashes occur.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute7. Back up before a factory reset
A factory reset is a late troubleshooting step because it erases personal data and installed apps. Samsung recommends backing up first with Smart Switch or a cloud account. Confirm that photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and files have actually synchronized or been copied; an account sign-in alone does not guarantee that every app’s private data is backed up.
Prepare the backup
- Charge the phone sufficiently and connect it to reliable Wi-Fi if using cloud backup.
- Use Smart Switch or your chosen cloud service to create a fresh backup.
- Verify important files from another device or the service’s restore view.
- Make sure you know the Google or Samsung account credentials that will be required after reset.
When a reset is reasonable
Consider resetting only after updates, restart, Battery usage review, and Safe mode testing have failed, and after the backup is verified. A clean setup can distinguish a damaged configuration from a persistent device fault. Restore apps gradually rather than reinstalling everything immediately; if an incompatible app is the trigger, restoring it at once can recreate the problem.

Samsung warns that a reset may not be a lasting fix when an app is the underlying cause and still needs a future update. Do not reset repeatedly while waiting for such an update.
What a reset result means
If the phone behaves normally before apps and restored data are added, reintroduce content in stages and watch for the first change. If freezing, crashes, or drain return immediately on a clean setup, stop reinstalling apps and contact Samsung. A reset changes the software state; it does not repair a physical fault, and it should not be used as a substitute for service when the device cannot remain usable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors8. Know when the issue needs Samsung service
Frozen or unresponsive screen that keeps returning
Samsung advises requesting service when frozen-screen trouble continues after the recommended restart, update, optimization, and Safe mode checks. Record whether the screen freezes only in one app or across the system, and whether a forced restart temporarily restores operation.
Boot loop or failure to start
If the phone repeatedly restarts or cannot reach the home screen, try the model-appropriate Safe mode procedure. Samsung says that when a boot problem persists in Safe mode, a hardware issue is likely and recommends a service center or repair scheduling. “Likely” is an escalation indicator, not a definitive remote diagnosis.
Prepare useful information for support
- Galaxy model name and software version, if accessible.
- Date the update installed and when the symptoms began.
- Whether the issue occurs in Safe mode.
- The top entries in Battery usage and any Samsung Members diagnostic results.
- Any forced restarts, reset attempts, heat, swelling, liquid exposure, or physical damage.
Do not continue charging or using a phone that is dangerously hot, visibly swollen, or physically damaged; arrange professional evaluation.
Common mistakes that make post-update problems harder to solve
- Resetting before backing up: a factory reset permanently removes local data.
- Blaming 5G or restoration automatically: both can raise power use temporarily, but Battery usage should identify what is active on your phone.
- Changing many settings at once: you lose the ability to tell which change affected the symptom.
- Deleting every app after a Safe mode result: remove or update one recent suspect at a time.
- Assuming Safe mode repairs the phone: it only disables downloaded apps for testing.
- Ignoring model differences: button combinations, menu names, and available performance controls vary by Galaxy model, carrier, region, and software version.
- Judging the battery from one short period: restoration, network conditions, and recent activity can temporarily change the graph; compare the relevant period and top consumers.
- Continuing to troubleshoot a phone that cannot stay on: collect the information you can, then prioritize Samsung service rather than repeatedly forcing restarts or resets.
A practical decision path
- Install available system, Google Play, and Galaxy Store updates.
- Restart normally; if the screen is frozen, use the model-appropriate forced restart.
- Run Device care optimization if available.
- For drain, inspect Battery usage and apply targeted background limits or power saving.
- For crashes or freezing, test Safe mode.
- If Safe mode helps, update or remove recent downloaded apps one at a time.
- If Safe mode does not help, back up with Smart Switch or a cloud account.
- Use a factory reset only after the backup is verified and the earlier checks fail.
- Request Samsung service for persistent freezing, boot problems that remain in Safe mode, or suspected hardware damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Samsung phone freezing after an update?
A downloaded app may be incompatible with the changed system, or background work such as data restoration may temporarily affect performance. Install all system and app updates, restart, and use Safe mode. If the phone still freezes in Safe mode, downloaded apps may not be responsible and Samsung service is appropriate if the problem persists.
Why is my Galaxy battery draining so fast after an update?
Open Settings, then Battery and Battery usage (or View details) to identify the app or service using power. Restoring a large amount of data and maintaining 5G alongside another network connection can temporarily increase use, but the battery details should guide your decision. Update the suspected app, restrict background activity for nonessential apps, or enable Power saving mode.
Best Value
How do I start a Samsung Galaxy in Safe mode?
On many recent models, open the power menu, touch and hold Power off, and select Safe mode. The exact steps vary by device interface. Safe mode disables downloaded apps without deleting them; restart normally to return to the usual mode.
What does it mean if the problem stops in Safe mode?
A downloaded app is a likely contributor. Restart normally and update, remove, or disable apps installed or updated just before the trouble began, testing one at a time. If the symptom remains in Safe mode, repeated app deletion is unlikely to solve it.
Should I factory-reset my Galaxy after an update problem?
Only consider it after updates, restart, Battery usage review, and Safe mode testing fail. A factory reset erases all personal data and installed apps, so verify a Smart Switch or cloud backup first. Samsung also warns that a reset may not last if an app still needs a future update.
Recommended Free Tools
Can 5G be the reason my Galaxy battery is draining?
Samsung says 5G devices may use more power because they maintain 3G or LTE connectivity alongside 5G for reliable calls, messages, and data. That is a possible contributor, not a diagnosis. Check Battery usage to see what is active on your particular phone.
What if my Galaxy keeps rebooting or will not start?
Use the model-appropriate Safe mode procedure. Samsung says a boot problem that persists in Safe mode is an indicator that a hardware issue is likely and recommends a service center or repair scheduling. Save any accessible diagnostic and battery information for support.
When should I contact Samsung instead of trying more fixes?
Request service when freezing continues after the recommended checks, when a boot problem remains in Safe mode, or when the phone shows suspected physical damage. Provide the model, software version, update date, Safe mode result, Battery usage entries, and Samsung Members diagnostic results if available.
The Bottom Line
Update the phone and its apps, restart, and inspect Battery usage before making major changes. Use Safe mode to test whether downloaded apps are involved, remove recent suspects one at a time, and back up with Smart Switch or a cloud account before any factory reset. If freezing or boot trouble persists—especially in Safe mode—stop resetting and arrange Samsung service.
