How to troubleshoot a Raspberry Pi that runs hot, slows down, or runs out of memory

A slow Raspberry Pi has three likely explanations: thermal throttling, an undervoltage condition, or memory pressure. Check all three while the problem workload is running before changing configuration or buying hardware. A warm case alone does not prove the Pi is faulty: Raspberry Pi computers deliberately reduce clock speeds, and sometimes voltage, to control heat.

Start by recording the exact board model, operating-system image, enclosure, attached peripherals, and the task that causes the slowdown. Temperature limits, power requirements, cooler compatibility, and practical memory capacity vary between generations and cases.

Start with the board, case, and workload

Write down the model printed on the board or shown by your operating system, the amount of installed RAM, the Raspberry Pi OS release or other distribution, and whether the board is in a closed case, a ventilated case, or open air. Note USB devices, storage devices, displays, cameras, and other peripherals. A power or heat problem can appear only when several accessories are active.

Describe the symptom precisely: does the whole desktop become sluggish, does a program stop responding, do clocks fall during a sustained job, or does the system report an out-of-memory error? Reproduce that same task for every measurement. An idle temperature or memory reading can miss the event that causes the failure.

  • Record the workload, such as video playback, compilation, a server process, a desktop session, or a long-running script.
  • Record whether the symptom occurs immediately or only after several minutes.
  • Note whether the Pi reboots, logs a low-voltage warning, or merely becomes slower.
  • Do not alter overclocking, thermal limits, GPU allocation, or swap settings until you have a baseline.

Run a baseline diagnostic

1. Measure the SoC temperature

On Raspberry Pi OS installations that include the standard utility, run:

vcgencmd measure_temp

This command asks the GPU directly for an instantaneous SoC temperature. Run it repeatedly during the workload, not just after the Pi has returned to an idle desktop. A single low reading after the slowdown does not rule out a brief thermal event.

2. Read the throttling and power flags

Run:

vcgencmd get_throttled

The result is a hexadecimal bit field. The important flags for this diagnosis are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Hex flag Meaning How to use it
0x4 Thermal throttling is occurring now Look for this while the workload is slow or hot.
0x40000 Thermal throttling has occurred since the flags were reset Shows that a previous event happened even if the Pi is cool now.
0x1 Undervoltage is occurring now Investigate the power supply, cable, and board requirements.
0x10000 Undervoltage has occurred since the flags were reset Useful when the warning has disappeared by the time you inspect the system.

Several bits can be set at once. The command can also report other conditions, including frequency capping and the soft-temperature limit; interpret those additional bits using the utility documentation for your installed system. Current flags identify an active condition, while historical flags preserve evidence of an earlier event.

3. Check memory and swap

Run:

free -h

Read the available value in the Mem row rather than treating the free column as the amount of RAM you can use. Linux deliberately fills spare RAM with filesystem cache and buffers; that memory is reclaimable when an application needs it. The Swap row shows how much storage-backed swap is in use.

Repeat the command while the problem is present. Consistently low available memory together with active swap indicates memory pressure. Swapping can keep programs running, but storage is much slower than RAM, so a heavily swapping Pi may feel frozen even though processes have not crashed.

4. Review the kernel log for power warnings

Inspect the kernel log using the log viewer provided by your distribution. Search for low-voltage or undervoltage messages and note their time relative to the slowdown. A warning that appeared earlier may explain a historical flag even if the supply is stable when you check it.

How thermal throttling makes a Pi slow

Raspberry Pi hardware documentation describes progressive Arm throttling from about 80°C to 85°C. At 85°C, further Arm and GPU throttling is used to keep the SoC within its thermal limits. The exact behavior depends on the board generation and configuration, so do not apply one model’s temperature behavior to every Pi.

Throttling is a protective control, not proof that the chip has been damaged. Raspberry Pi states that built-in throttling prevents overheating damage to the SoC; a heatsink is therefore not universally required merely to avoid physical damage. Cooling becomes useful when throttling is reducing performance or when the enclosure cannot shed heat during a sustained workload.

When a temperature reading is significant

  • A high reading accompanied by the current-throttling flag (0x4) directly connects heat with the slowdown.
  • A high reading with only the historical-throttling flag means the event happened earlier; continue monitoring to determine whether it recurs.
  • A warm board without either thermal flag may be operating normally, or the reading may have been taken after the workload ended.
  • A low temperature does not clear a power problem. Undervoltage can throttle the Arm cores and GPU independently of heat.

Inspect the enclosure before adding hardware

Check whether the case covers vents, traps warm air, or leaves too little clearance around the board. Move the Pi away from other heat sources and provide unobstructed airflow. Then repeat the same workload and measurements.

If the case is compatible, a model-specific passive heatsink can spread heat away from the SoC without adding a fan. An active fan or cooler moves air and is better suited to sustained loads that keep the temperature near the throttling range. Raspberry Pi 5 has official Active Cooler and fan-case options, but the connector, mounting points, and case clearance must match that exact board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Cooling approach Best fit Installation and power considerations What it can and cannot establish
Improve placement and ventilation A Pi whose case or surroundings retain warm air No additional accessory or power connection; preserve vent clearance. Can reduce heat buildup, but may be insufficient for a sustained high-load workload.
Passive heatsink Moderate loads where silent heat spreading is sufficient Must fit the board and enclosure; no fan power is required. Reduces the thermal rise but does not provide forced airflow.
Active fan or cooler Sustained loads that trigger thermal throttling Use a cooler designed for the exact Pi model and case; a fan requires a suitable power connection. There is no universal cooling temperature, noise level, or performance gain.

Use “Raspberry Pi active cooler” as a search phrase only after the measurements show a heat-related problem. Do not choose an accessory solely because the board feels warm.

Rule out undervoltage separately

Raspberry Pi configuration documentation identifies 4.63 V (a ±5% tolerance around the nominal supply) as the point below which the Arm cores and GPU are throttled and a low-voltage message is added to the kernel log. This is a supply-delivery limit, not a temperature threshold.

Undervoltage can be caused by an unsuitable adapter, a cable with excessive voltage drop, an overloaded supply, or a peripheral load that the supply cannot maintain. Check the power requirements for the exact board and verify both the supply and cable. There is no single replacement supply that is suitable for every Raspberry Pi generation, enclosure, and peripheral combination.

Interpret the power flags

  • 0x1 means undervoltage is active when you read the field.
  • 0x10000 means an undervoltage event occurred previously, even if the voltage has recovered.
  • If a current or historical undervoltage flag appears while the temperature is ordinary, fix power delivery before buying cooling hardware.
  • If both undervoltage and thermal flags appear, correct the power path first and then retest the thermal behavior; an unstable supply can make the overall diagnosis confusing.

After correcting the supply or cable, repeat the original workload and inspect both the kernel log and vcgencmd get_throttled. A historical flag may remain, so judge the result by whether a new event appears during the retest and whether the slowdown returns.

Diagnose memory pressure with free -h

Understand the important fields

The Mem row reports total, used, free, shared, cache-related, and available memory. Linux uses unused RAM for caches, so a small free value is not automatically a problem. available is the practical estimate of memory that applications can obtain without immediately resorting to swap because it includes reclaimable caches and buffers.

The Swap row reports storage-backed memory. Some swap use is not automatically an emergency, but rising swap use during the slowdown, combined with persistently low available memory, is strong evidence that the workload exceeds comfortable RAM capacity.

Find the process consuming memory

Use a process monitor such as htop if it is installed or available for your OS image. Sort by memory usage while the workload is active and identify whether one application grows continuously, several applications collectively exceed RAM, or the desktop itself is the main consumer. A single leaking process calls for an application update or configuration change; a consistently oversized workload calls for reducing the workload or using a board with more RAM.

Choose a memory remedy

Option When it fits Trade-off
Close applications or reduce the workload Available memory falls only for a particular task or combination of programs. Preserves the existing board but limits what can run simultaneously.
Use a lighter command-line setup A graphical desktop is not required for the service or script. Reduces background memory use but removes desktop conveniences.
Allow or retain storage-backed swap You need a safety margin for occasional peaks and can tolerate slower operation during swapping. Swap uses storage and can make a memory-starved system feel very slow; it does not create RAM.
Move to a higher-RAM board Available memory remains low under a normal, sustained workload after software reduction. Requires replacing the board and checking enclosure, power, storage, and peripheral compatibility.

Raspberry Pi Official Magazine specifically advises against using a Raspberry Pi 5 with 1GB of RAM as a desktop and suggests 2GB or more for that use case. That recommendation is limited to the Raspberry Pi 5 desktop scenario; it is not a universal rule for every Pi model or command-line workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat swappiness as a universal fix

Reducing Linux’s vm.swappiness value is sometimes suggested to make a Pi swap less readily. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s guidance treats such a change as temporary and warns that lower swappiness can increase out-of-memory errors. It is therefore not the default remedy for a Pi that is already running out of memory. First identify the largest consumers, reduce the workload, or choose a board with enough RAM.

Configuration changes that can make the problem worse

Do not raise the thermal limit to hide throttling

The configuration documentation describes 85°C as the default temp_limit and states that higher values are clamped. Raising a limit does not remove the heat; it only attempts to defer the protection that keeps the SoC within its operating envelope. Improve airflow or use compatible cooling instead.

Do not increase gpu_mem as a general RAM upgrade

The legacy GPU-memory setting reserves system memory for GPU use. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that oversizing it can harm performance and can prevent Linux from booting. It is not a general solution to low application memory. Raspberry Pi 5 does not allocate GPU memory on behalf of the operating system through that setting, so copying an older configuration recommendation to that board is especially inappropriate.

Be cautious with overclocking

Overclocking changes the workload’s heat and power requirements and can obscure the original cause. Return the board to a supported baseline while diagnosing temperature, supply voltage, and memory. Only after the system is stable should you consider performance tuning, with a way to reverse every change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retest one change at a time

  1. Restore a baseline configuration and run the workload until the symptom appears.
  2. Capture vcgencmd measure_temp, vcgencmd get_throttled, free -h, and the relevant kernel-log entries.
  3. Make one change: improve airflow, install a compatible cooler, correct the power path, close a memory-heavy application, or reduce the workload.
  4. Run the same workload for a comparable duration and capture the same readings.
  5. Keep the change only if the active flags, available memory, swap behavior, or observed slowdown improves without creating a new fault.

This method distinguishes a real fix from a coincidental improvement. For example, a cooler cannot correct an undervoltage flag, and a larger GPU allocation cannot create application RAM. If the Pi still slows after stable power, adequate cooling, and comfortable available memory, investigate the application, storage device, operating-system logs, and peripheral drivers separately rather than continuing to raise limits.

Use the evidence to choose the next step

  • Current thermal flag plus a temperature in the 80–85°C control range: inspect airflow and use model-compatible cooling if the workload needs sustained performance.
  • Current or historical undervoltage flag, especially with a kernel warning: verify the board-specific supply and cable before changing thermal settings.
  • Low available memory plus active swap: identify memory-heavy processes, reduce the workload or desktop overhead, and consider a higher-RAM board when the demand is normal and sustained.
  • No thermal, power, or memory evidence: look at application behavior, storage latency, background services, and OS-specific logs; do not buy a cooler or increase reserved GPU memory without a corresponding diagnostic signal.

A Raspberry Pi that runs warm may be operating exactly as designed. The useful distinction is whether the board is actively throttling, losing supply voltage, or exhausting application memory during the workload that matters to you.
