Start by restarting your Samsung device and checking its display settings. A “purple screen” can mean a full-screen tint, a colored line, a localized patch, or rainbow-like colors that appear only while charging; those symptoms do not point to one confirmed cause. If the problem persists after basic checks—especially after a drop or liquid exposure—arrange a service inspection rather than assuming a software fix will repair the display.
First, identify what the screen is doing
Note the shape of the discoloration and when it appears. These observations can help you explain the problem to support, but they do not prove what caused it.

- Purple across the whole display: Check whether it is a color cast or whether the screen is otherwise black or difficult to use.
- A thin vertical or horizontal line: Check whether it remains in the same place across different screens and apps.
- A spot or spreading patch: Note its location and whether it has changed over time.
- Rainbow colors only while charging: Check whether a screen saver is active.
Also note whether the symptom began after a drop, pressure, liquid exposure, a software update, or installing an app. If visible, see whether it appears on the startup logo as well as in apps.

Restart the device and check display settings
Restart first. Samsung Korea says a temporary or software error can cause an abnormal display and recommends rebooting. If the colors look rainbow-like only while the device is charging, check whether a screen saver is running. For a general color cast, review display modes such as Dark mode and blue-light filtering.

Settings menus differ by model and Android version. Search for these options in your device’s current Settings app rather than relying on a menu path from an older Galaxy model.
If the screen is black or the controls are unresponsive, a forced restart may help. Samsung Korea’s instructions for the Galaxy models covered on its page say to hold the side/power and volume-down buttons together for at least seven seconds. Button combinations vary, so check the support instructions for your exact model if that does not work. See Samsung Korea’s display troubleshooting guidance.

Install available software updates
Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance for display lines recommends checking for updates. Connect the device to the internet and make sure it has sufficient charge before installing one; Samsung’s page specifies at least 50% charge. Menu labels can vary, so use the software-update option in Settings for your model. An update is a sensible troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for a damaged display.

Test the display in Safe mode
Safe mode disables downloaded apps temporarily, which can help determine whether an app is involved. Samsung describes it as loading the original software that came with the device while disabling downloaded apps.
- Open the power menu. The way to open it can differ by Galaxy model.
- Touch and hold the on-screen power-off option until the Safe mode prompt appears, then select Safe mode. If this method is not available on your model, follow Samsung’s Safe mode instructions for that device.
- Check whether the purple tint, line, or patch is still visible.
- If the problem disappears in Safe mode, restart normally and uninstall recently added apps one at a time, checking the display after each removal.
If the symptom disappears in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a plausible cause, not a certainty. Safe mode is a diagnostic test; it does not repair a physically damaged screen.

When to arrange a service inspection
Contact Samsung support or arrange an inspection if the discoloration remains after restarting, updating, and testing in Safe mode, or if a line or patch persists. Seek service promptly if the symptom followed an impact or liquid exposure. Samsung’s US support guidance directs users with unresolved display issues to a walk-in service center or online repair scheduling, and recommends service when damage is present.

Translation from the original Korean: “If the same issue remains after rebooting, it may be a problem with the display touch panel, so the phone needs to be inspected at a service center.” The statement is from guidance published on 2020-04-13; it does not identify the cause of every purple-screen symptom.

Back up important data before a repair if you can. If you compare repair providers, ask whether the parts match your exact model, what parts will be used, whether the repair affects any existing warranty, what the written quote includes, how your data will be handled, and whether the repair itself is covered. Local availability and terms vary.
Why a factory reset should not be your first step
A factory reset erases data, so try the lower-risk checks first and back up important information before considering one. A reset cannot repair a physically faulty display, and if an app is responsible, the problem may return if that app is installed again or needs an update. Do not reset a device as a substitute for service when the screen was damaged or the symptom remains persistent.
What you can—and cannot—conclude from the symptom
“Purple screen” describes what you see, not a diagnosis. The appearance alone does not establish that an update, overheating, a loose connector, or an OLED failure caused it. Likewise, an update or reset cannot be promised to fix a line or patch that persists. A technician can assess the device and determine what repair, if any, is appropriate.
