Start with the transaction hash, not the wallet label. Open the hash in a block explorer for the exact network you used and determine whether the transaction is still pending, was included but failed, or is already confirmed. Only a still-pending transaction can potentially be replaced with a speed-up or cancellation attempt. A confirmed transaction cannot be canceled or reversed.
Once the status is clear, check the transaction’s nonce, fee settings, and any older pending transactions from the same account. Ethereum processes an account’s nonces in sequence, so an earlier transaction can block every later one. The right response is usually to wait, submit a higher-fee replacement, or attempt a same-nonce cancellation—never to send an ordinary new transaction with a different nonce and expect it to replace the stuck one.

First, identify what actually happened
A wallet can display “pending” while the network has already accepted, rejected, or replaced the transaction. Before changing anything, copy the transaction hash and search it on an explorer that supports the chain you used. Ethereum mainnet, layer-2 networks, and sidechains have separate explorers; a hash opened on the wrong network can look missing even when the transaction is valid elsewhere.

- Copy the complete transaction hash from your wallet’s activity or details screen.
- Open the explorer for the network selected when you submitted it.
- Confirm the sender address, recipient or contract, amount, fee fields, and nonce match your wallet record.
- Read the explorer’s status and receipt rather than relying on the wallet’s notification alone.
Use the following interpretation:

A wallet’s “failed” banner and an explorer’s “pending” state are not interchangeable. Treat the explorer receipt as the authoritative starting point for troubleshooting.
Why a busy network leaves transactions pending
Ethereum transactions compete for limited block space. A transaction becomes eligible for inclusion only when its fee offer meets current conditions. Ethereum’s type 2 transactions separate that offer into a base fee and a priority fee. The base fee is the minimum per-unit amount required for eligibility in the relevant block; the priority fee is a tip intended to make validators prefer the transaction. Your max fee is the cap you authorize for each unit of gas and must be high enough to cover the base fee plus the tip if the transaction is to execute.

The base fee changes with demand. A fee estimate that was reasonable when you clicked “Send” can become uncompetitive while the transaction waits. There is no single gwei number that is always sufficient, and the official material does not establish a universal timeout after which Ethereum automatically cancels a transaction. Use the wallet’s current estimate or a reputable fee tracker for the specific network at the moment you act; do not copy an old fixed recommendation from a forum post.
What the fee fields mean
- Base fee: the network-determined reserve price for inclusion in a block.
- Priority fee: an additional tip that signals how urgently you want inclusion.
- Max fee: your per-gas ceiling. It must cover the applicable base fee and priority fee for the transaction to be eligible.
- Gas limit: the maximum computation units the transaction may consume. Raising it does not automatically make a transaction’s fee competitive, while setting it too low can cause execution to fail.
The amount you ultimately pay depends on the gas used and the fee rules of the network. A higher replacement offer increases the fee bid; it does not guarantee immediate inclusion.
Check for an earlier nonce that is blocking the queue
Every transaction sent by an account carries a sequential nonce. If nonce 42 is pending, a transaction with nonce 43 generally cannot be processed first. This is why a later transaction may remain pending even when its fee looks attractive: the account is still waiting for the older nonce.
Find the oldest pending transaction
- In the explorer, open your address page on the correct network.
- Review pending transactions and note each nonce.
- Identify the smallest nonce that has not been confirmed or replaced.
- Resolve that transaction before attempting to replace a later one.
Wallets may list activity newest first, so the first item on screen is not necessarily the blocker. MetaMask’s support guidance specifically recommends resolving the smallest pending nonce before later transactions. Other wallets may expose the same information under “Advanced,” “Transaction details,” or an account activity view.

If you have several pending transactions, changing the fee on nonce 45 will not solve a problem at nonce 44. Work from the oldest outstanding nonce forward, checking the explorer after each replacement.
Choose between waiting, speeding up, and attempting cancellation
Make the choice only after confirming that the explorer still reports the transaction as pending and that no older nonce requires attention.

Do not submit a normal new payment with a different nonce as a replacement. It creates another transaction and does not replace the pending one.
How to wait safely
Waiting is reasonable when the transaction is non-urgent, the fee is not obviously stale, and no older nonce is blocking it. Keep the hash and monitor the correct explorer rather than repeatedly clicking “Send” in the wallet. Repeated submissions can create additional transactions and make the nonce sequence harder to understand.

- Record the hash, nonce, recipient, and fee settings.
- Watch for a confirmation or a replacement hash in the explorer.
- Do not import your seed phrase or private key into a website claiming it can “unstick” the transaction.
- If the wallet interface stops updating, use the wallet provider’s official support channel while continuing to verify the chain state independently.
There is no fixed waiting period that guarantees a transaction will time out. A pending transaction may remain in a node’s local pool, be dropped by that node, or later be accepted when fee conditions change. The explorer’s current status matters more than an elapsed number of minutes or hours.
How a speed-up replacement works
A speed-up is not an edit to the original transaction. The wallet creates and signs a new transaction that uses the same nonce and offers a higher fee. Nodes and validators generally accept only one transaction for that nonce; if the replacement is accepted, it supersedes the original.

Generic wallet procedure
- Open the pending transaction’s details in your wallet.
- Select Speed up, Replace, or the equivalent control.
- Review the newly displayed max fee, priority fee, and estimated total cost using the wallet’s current network data.
- Confirm that the nonce remains identical to the pending transaction.
- Sign the replacement and save its new hash.
- Track the replacement hash on the correct explorer. The original hash may remain visible as pending until the replacement is recognized, then appear as replaced or dropped.
If the replacement is rejected for an insufficient fee bump, use the wallet’s updated recommendation rather than guessing a universal percentage or gwei value. Wallet policies and node relay rules differ, and the supplied official guidance does not establish one threshold that works everywhere.
What a speed-up cannot do
- It cannot force a validator to include the transaction immediately.
- It cannot fix an invalid contract call, an incorrect recipient, or a too-low gas limit that would make execution fail.
- It does not make a confirmed transaction reversible.
- It does not bypass an earlier pending nonce from the same account.
How to attempt a cancellation
Cancellation is another replacement attempt. Wallets commonly construct a zero-value transaction from your address back to your own address with the same nonce as the unwanted transaction and a competitive fee. If that replacement is included first, the original transaction can no longer use the nonce.

Cancellation steps
- Verify on the explorer that the original transaction is still pending.
- Confirm that its nonce is the oldest unresolved nonce for your account.
- Choose Cancel or Cancel transaction in the wallet, if the option is available.
- Review the replacement’s recipient, value, nonce, and fee. A typical cancellation sends zero ETH to your own address, but labels vary by wallet.
- Sign the replacement and record its hash.
- Check which same-nonce transaction is included. Do not assume cancellation succeeded merely because the wallet displayed a success message.
The original transaction may still be mined if the cancellation does not reach the network first or does not offer a competitive fee. If the original wins, the intended transfer or contract call executes and cannot be undone by a later cancellation. Never describe cancellation as a guaranteed rollback.

Menu names differ among wallets. MetaMask’s current post-transaction detail flow for Extension version 13.30 and later covers Ethereum, Linea, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Base, and Polygon. The same help guidance says this change does not apply to MetaMask Mobile or Portfolio. Treat those directions as one wallet-and-version example, not a universal Ethereum procedure.

If your wallet does not show speed-up or cancel controls, first confirm the transaction is still pending and that you are using the latest supported interface. Some wallets require an advanced setting to edit or specify a nonce; others expose only a replacement action. Use the provider’s official support documentation for exact labels, and never give support staff your seed phrase or private key.
When the explorer says “failed”
A failed transaction was included in a block but did not complete successfully. It is therefore a different problem from an unconfirmed pending transaction. Open the receipt and inspect the status, gas used, and any available revert or error information before retrying.
Why a confirmed transaction can fail
- Contract execution reverted: the contract rejected the call because a condition was not met, such as an expired quote, insufficient token balance, or an invalid state.
- Insufficient gas limit: the transaction did not provide enough computation units to finish the call.
- Application state changed: another transaction may have consumed a position, filled an order, or changed a contract condition before yours executed.
- Incorrect parameters: the recipient, token, amount, approval, or calldata may not match what the application expected.
Ethereum charges for computation performed even when execution fails. Gas already consumed is generally not returned merely because the call reverted. Do not promise a refund of the transferred amount or all fees without examining the specific receipt and contract behavior.
Retry only after diagnosing the cause
- Confirm the failed transaction’s block, status, nonce, and contract address.
- Read the explorer’s error or revert information when available.
- Check the application’s balance, allowance, deadline, and current state.
- Verify the gas limit suggested for the corrected call.
- Submit a new transaction only after correcting the underlying condition.
If the contract interaction is unfamiliar, contact the application through its official support channel. A higher fee can change inclusion speed, but it cannot make a contract accept invalid data.
Common symptoms and the right branch

Network and wallet safety rules
- Use the correct chain: a transaction hash is meaningful only in the network where it was submitted.
- Keep credentials private: legitimate troubleshooting never requires a seed phrase, private key, or one-time recovery code.
- Verify every replacement: read the nonce, destination, value, and fee on the signing screen.
- Expect volatile estimates: fee recommendations and wallet labels can change as demand changes.
- Do not trust urgency scams: anyone promising a guaranteed cancellation, fixed timeout, or guaranteed confirmation is overstating what the protocol provides.
- Separate wallet problems from chain state: if the explorer is current but the wallet is stale, reconnect or update the wallet instead of creating another transaction.
A compact decision checklist
- Copy the transaction hash.
- Open it on the explorer for the exact network used.
- Classify it as pending, confirmed-successful, confirmed-failed, replaced, dropped, or not found.
- If pending, record the nonce and inspect all older pending nonces from the same account.
- Review the current base fee, priority fee, max fee, and gas limit context.
- Wait if the action is not urgent and the fee is acceptable.
- Use speed up when you still want the original action and accept a higher fee bid.
- Attempt cancellation only when you no longer want the action, the original is still pending, and the wallet offers a same-nonce replacement.
- Track the replacement hash and confirm which transaction is included.
- If failed, inspect the receipt and correct the application or gas problem before submitting a new transaction.
The essential distinction is simple: a pending transaction may be replaceable; a confirmed transaction is not. Explorer status, nonce order, and current fee conditions tell you which action is technically available.
