What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your PC started crashing after you installed or replaced RAM, begin with the new memory and its configuration—but do not assume the DIMM is defective. Reseat the modules, confirm the motherboard sees the expected capacity, return BIOS memory settings to their defaults, verify motherboard-and-CPU compatibility, then test each module and slot in a controlled sequence. Windows Memory Diagnostic or a bootable test such as MemTest86 can provide evidence before you replace hardware.
Identify exactly when the crash happens
The failure stage determines which checks are possible. Record the behavior before opening the case or changing BIOS settings. Note whether the machine never reaches the power-on self-test (POST), reaches BIOS but cannot start Windows, or runs Windows before freezing or showing a blue screen. Photograph any stop code and the name shown beside “What failed.” Microsoft Support explains that stop-code errors can result from hardware, drivers, or software, so a code is a clue rather than proof that RAM is at fault.

| Observed behavior | What to record | Best first check |
|---|---|---|
| No display, no POST, or repeated power cycling | Whether fans start, diagnostic LEDs or beep codes, and whether BIOS opens | Power down, reseat the DIMMs in the manual’s recommended slots, then check whether BIOS detects the installed capacity |
| BIOS opens but Windows will not start | Any boot message, automatic-repair loop, or restart pattern | Load BIOS defaults and disable XMP, EXPO, DOCP, or another memory profile before trying Windows again |
| Windows starts, then freezes, restarts, or shows a blue screen | Stop code, “What failed” module, and whether the crash occurs at idle or under load | Run Windows Memory Diagnostic at default memory settings and preserve the result |
Microsoft’s blue-screen guidance recommends removing newly added hardware during basic troubleshooting. That makes the new RAM a sensible first suspect, but the timing of the upgrade does not identify whether the DIMM, a slot, a memory profile, the motherboard, or another component is responsible.
Before touching the modules, establish a safe baseline
Shut the computer down normally if possible, switch off the power supply, and follow the motherboard manual for removing and installing memory. Do not keep changing several BIOS options at once: if the result changes, you will not know which change mattered. Write down the original memory settings, including any profile name, before resetting them.

If the system is unstable, disconnect unnecessary peripherals and use only the hardware needed to reach BIOS or run a diagnostic. A successful boot with a minimal configuration does not prove that a peripheral is faulty; it simply makes the memory test easier to interpret.
Reseat the RAM and verify it in BIOS
An incompletely latched DIMM may be electrically unreliable or absent from BIOS. ASUS’s installation guidance says to align the notch, press the module vertically downward into the socket, and confirm that the slot latch locks. Use the slot arrangement shown in your motherboard manual rather than choosing slots by appearance.
- Turn the system off and remove power according to the board manual.
- Open the DIMM-slot latches and remove the modules without forcing them sideways.
- Check that the notch in each module matches the key in the slot. A module that is reversed will not seat correctly; do not push it against resistance.
- Install the module vertically until the latch or latches close fully. ASUS specifically describes pushing the memory vertically downward into the socket.
- For two modules, use the paired slots recommended by the motherboard manual. For one module, use the prescribed single-DIMM slot.
- Reconnect power, enter BIOS, and check the reported total memory and the populated slot or channel information.
If BIOS still reports less memory than expected, power down and repeat the installation once. A missing module at this stage is more likely to be a seating, slot, compatibility, or module issue than a Windows problem.

Modern DIMMs often include an XMP, EXPO, or DOCP profile that applies faster speeds or tighter timings than the board’s standard settings. A kit can work at default settings yet crash when a profile is enabled, especially when the motherboard, CPU memory controller, BIOS version, or module arrangement differs from the profile’s test system.

- Enter BIOS/UEFI setup.
- Choose the board’s command for loading optimized or default settings. The exact wording varies by manufacturer.
- Set memory tuning to Auto or the standard/default profile. Temporarily disable XMP, EXPO, DOCP, or any manual voltage, frequency, and timing changes.
- Save, reboot, and test the computer before changing anything else.
If a failed profile prevents the system from reaching BIOS, use the motherboard manual’s CMOS-reset procedure. ASUS notes that reset instructions differ by board, so do not short pins, remove a battery, or use a rear-panel button without confirming the correct method for your model. After a reset, verify that the expected capacity appears before enabling any performance profile.
MemTest86 documents that aggressive timings can create memory errors and recommends trying standard timings or another profile. A crash that disappears at defaults points to configuration stability, not automatically to a physically bad DIMM.
Check compatibility using the exact motherboard and CPU
Compatibility is a system-level question. Look up the full motherboard model and revision, the CPU generation, and the memory kit’s exact part number. Check the board’s support page and manual for the memory type, maximum capacity, supported module arrangement, and validated speeds. Also check the CPU manufacturer’s memory limits for that processor generation.
| Compatibility detail | Why it matters during diagnosis |
|---|---|
| Memory type | A board accepts a specific memory generation and module format; a physically similar module is not automatically electrically compatible. |
| Total capacity | The board and CPU may support different maximum capacities. Confirm the limit for the exact model rather than a related board. |
| Number of modules and rank arrangement | Two, four, or mixed-capacity modules place different loads on the memory controller and may have different validated speeds. |
| Supported speed and timings | The advertised profile speed may require a profile setting; compare it with the board and CPU’s standard support. |
| Qualified Vendor List (QVL) status | A QVL entry is useful evidence that a specific kit was validated on a board, but it is not a guarantee for every CPU, BIOS, mixed kit, or overclocked setting. |
| BIOS support | Newer processors or memory configurations may depend on a particular BIOS release. Follow the board maker’s documented update and recovery process. |
Do not combine separate retail kits merely because their labels show the same capacity and speed. Mixed kits can behave differently from a matched kit, and a QVL result for one configuration does not certify a different combination.

Isolate modules and slots systematically
Testing one variable at a time is more informative than repeatedly reinstalling all modules. Start with the single-DIMM slot specified by the manual.
- Leave BIOS at default memory settings.
- Install only module A in the prescribed single-module slot and attempt to reach BIOS and Windows.
- Run a memory diagnostic with module A.
- Power down, replace module A with module B in the same slot, and repeat the same test.
- If both modules pass individually, test the pair in the manual’s recommended dual-channel slots.
- If a module fails in the prescribed slot, try that same module in another approved slot only after recording the first result.
| Result pattern | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| One module errors in more than one approved slot while the other passes | That module is the leading suspect | Repeat at default settings, then compare with the old kit before arranging a return or replacement |
| Both modules pass alone but fail together | Configuration, slot arrangement, BIOS support, or memory-controller limits are possible | Recheck the manual’s paired slots, confirm compatibility, and keep profiles disabled |
| Errors follow one physical slot or channel | The motherboard slot, channel wiring, CPU socket contact, or memory controller may be involved | Inspect the board and CPU installation according to the manufacturer’s service guidance; test with known-good compatible memory |
| The same kit passes at defaults but fails only with XMP, EXPO, or DOCP | The profile or its voltage, timing, and frequency combination is unstable in this system | Use defaults or a less aggressive validated setting and check BIOS and QVL guidance |
| Results change between runs without a clear pattern | An intermittent fault, marginal setting, temperature effect, or another component may be involved | Repeat a controlled test, keep a log, and broaden the investigation instead of declaring a DIMM bad from one run |
MemTest86 cautions that a reported memory error does not always identify a single defective module unambiguously. A bad result can arise from the module, slot, motherboard, CPU socket, memory controller, or unstable timings. The pattern across modules and slots is the evidence.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic in Windows 10 or 11
Microsoft includes Windows Memory Diagnostic in Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is useful when the operating system can start, although a clean run cannot rule out every intermittent or profile-specific fault.

Windows+R. - Enter
mdschedand press Enter. - Choose Restart now and check for problems if you can interrupt the current session, or choose the option to check at the next restart.
- Allow the diagnostic to complete without powering off the machine.
- After Windows returns, look for the result notification. If it is not shown, open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > System, and find the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry.
The Standard test runs by default. Microsoft documents an Extended mode that can be selected from the diagnostic screen with F1 and confirmed with F10. Extended testing takes longer, so use it when a Standard run is clean but crashes continue or when you are investigating an intermittent fault.

Run the test with XMP, EXPO, and DOCP disabled first. If the standard configuration passes but the profile configuration fails, you have isolated a settings problem more effectively than by testing only the overclocked profile.
Use a bootable test when Windows is unreliable
If Windows will not boot, or you want an independent environment, use a bootable memory diagnostic such as MemTest86. You need suitable boot media and the ability to select it from the system’s boot menu. A USB flash drive is commonly used, but the diagnostic’s current instructions determine the required creation process.
- Prepare the bootable diagnostic media using the vendor’s instructions on another working computer if necessary.
- Leave memory at BIOS defaults and shut the target PC down.
- Start the PC and select the diagnostic media from the firmware boot menu.
- Run the default pass first. Record the number of passes, errors, module arrangement, and BIOS settings.
- If errors appear, power down and repeat with one module in the prescribed slot, then test the other module under the same conditions.
One clean pass lowers suspicion but is not a universal guarantee against intermittent failures. Conversely, errors that vanish after disabling a memory profile point toward timings or voltage rather than proving that the silicon is damaged.
Compare the old and new kits without changing the test conditions
If you still have the previous memory, it is a valuable control. Keep the same motherboard, CPU, BIOS version, storage, operating-system installation, and test procedure. Change only the memory kit.

- Install the new kit in the identical slots, retain default settings, and repeat the test.
- Record whether each kit reaches BIOS, boots Windows, and produces diagnostic errors.
Stability with the old kit and repeatable failure with the new kit at defaults makes the new kit a leading suspect, subject to the compatibility checks above. If both kits fail, or both pass but the system crashes only with a profile enabled, look beyond a single defective DIMM.
Know when the fault may be outside the RAM
Broaden the investigation when controlled testing does not isolate a module. ASUS troubleshooting guidance lists hardware matching or failure and BIOS-setting problems among possible causes of crashes, hangs, and blue screens.
- Motherboard or slot: Errors confined to one slot or memory channel can indicate board damage, a channel problem, or a poor connection.
- CPU socket or memory controller: The processor’s integrated memory controller and socket contacts affect every DIMM. A channel-specific failure with known-good memory warrants careful inspection using the platform’s service instructions.
- BIOS: A firmware version may not handle a newer CPU or memory configuration correctly. Check the exact board support page and follow its documented update method; do not interrupt an update.
- Power or another component: Instability that remains after defaults, compatible known-good memory, and repeatable diagnostics may require checking power delivery, cooling, storage, drivers, or other hardware.
- Software and drivers: Microsoft notes that stop codes can be caused by drivers or software as well as hardware. If memory tests remain clean and the crash pattern does not depend on the new kit, investigate those causes.
Avoid repeated BIOS experiments without a log. Record each profile, slot, module, diagnostic mode, and result so that a repair shop or component manufacturer can reproduce the failure.
Common mistakes that obscure the cause
- Testing with a profile still enabled: A marginal XMP, EXPO, or DOCP setting can make a good kit look defective. Establish a default-settings result first.
- Testing both modules at once: A combined error does not show which module or slot is responsible. Use the single-module sequence.
- Changing slots and settings simultaneously: Change one variable, then repeat the same diagnostic.
- Relying on the advertised speed alone: Check the exact board, CPU, module count, capacity, and QVL information.
- Treating one clean test as proof: Intermittent and profile-specific faults can escape a single run. Repeat under the configuration that actually crashes.
- Replacing hardware before comparing the old kit: The old-versus-new control can distinguish a kit problem from a board, CPU, or software problem.
- Assuming a stop code names the failed part: Preserve the code, but use it alongside physical isolation and memory diagnostics.
When to stop testing and arrange a return or repair
Consider returning or replacing the new kit when it repeatedly errors at default settings, in the correct motherboard slot, after reseating, and when the same test passes with the old kit or with the other module. Provide the seller or manufacturer with the exact kit part number, motherboard and CPU models, BIOS version, slot arrangement, profile state, and diagnostic results.
Seek board or platform service instead when known-good compatible memory fails in one channel, both kits show the same errors, or instability continues after reverting to defaults. Those patterns do not prove a particular component is bad, but they justify investigating the motherboard, CPU/socket, BIOS, power, and other system causes rather than buying another RAM kit at random.
A compact decision sequence
- Record the crash stage, stop code, and “What failed” text.
- Reseat the DIMMs in the manual’s approved slots and verify capacity in BIOS.
- Load BIOS defaults and disable XMP, EXPO, DOCP, and manual memory tuning.
- Check the exact motherboard, CPU, memory type, capacity, module count, speed, timings, and QVL information.
- Test one DIMM at a time in the prescribed slot, then test the pair.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic, using Extended mode when a Standard run is inconclusive; use a bootable diagnostic if Windows cannot start.
- Compare the old and new kits under identical default settings.
- Escalate to motherboard, CPU/socket, BIOS, power, driver, or software investigation when the evidence does not follow the new memory.
This sequence turns “my PC crashes after a RAM upgrade” into a reproducible comparison. It separates a loose installation, an unstable profile, an unsupported configuration, and a potentially faulty component without treating any single symptom as conclusive.
