A Nokia 3310 that stops booting immediately after a PCB modification should be treated as an unidentified power, connection, or rework fault—not as proof that one particular chip has failed. The board revision, the exact modification, battery condition, and the phone’s response to the power key are all unknown from the symptom alone.
Start by preserving evidence, then work from the outside in: verify a known-good battery and contacts, inspect the modified area with power removed, and use a multimeter for only the continuity and DC-voltage checks supported by the correct schematic. Historical Nokia service documents cover specific NHM platforms and authorized-service procedures; they do not validate an unspecified modern or custom modification.

Establish the facts before changing anything else
The 2000-era Nokia 3310 family was built on more than one PCB and service platform. A modification that is safe on one revision can interrupt a supply rail, key line, clock circuit, or connector on another. Write down the board or platform marking, the PCB revision, and the exact handset model before interpreting any test result.

Also describe what “won’t boot” means in this handset. A phone that draws no measurable current is a different diagnostic case from one that gives a short current pulse, vibrates, lights the display, or reaches a flashing or service mode. No single component diagnosis is justified until those observations and the modification details are known.

1. Freeze the evidence
Remove the battery before touching solder joints or probing exposed pads. Photograph both sides of the board, the connector area, and the entire modification at a useful magnification. Keep the photographs with the original schematic, build notes, component values, wire lengths, and the date of the work.
- Identify the platform. Record every marking on the PCB, shield, flex connector, and main integrated-circuit area. Do not assume that a board sold as a 3310 uses the same layout as another 3310.
- Describe the modification precisely. Note every cut trace, jumper wire, resistor or capacitor change, socket, replacement part, and removed shield. If the modification came from a guide, save the guide version and its diagram.
- Record the battery. Note which battery was fitted, whether it was charged on a known-good phone or charger, and whether another verified battery produces the same symptom.
- Record the power-key response. With the battery installed only for a controlled observation, note whether there is no activity, a click or vibration, a brief display or backlight flash, a current pulse, or a reaction to service equipment.
- Record the timing. A response that lasts milliseconds, one second, or several seconds points to different parts of the startup sequence. Do not repeatedly cycle a board that may contain a short.
- Keep the original state recoverable. Do not trim wires, scrape additional solder mask, or remove parts until the untouched modified state has been documented.
2. Classify the symptom before selecting a test
| Observed behavior | What it establishes | Next controlled action |
|---|---|---|
| No display, sound, vibration, or measurable activity | The phone has not shown evidence of reaching startup; the supply path, contacts, switch route, or a short remain possible. | Verify the battery and connector, then inspect the modified area and measure the board only with the matching schematic. |
| A brief current pulse or momentary light, followed by shutdown | Some part of the power-up sequence begins, but this does not identify whether the cause is supply collapse, a protection response, clock or reset trouble, or a disturbed connection. | Capture the pulse safely, check for an unstable battery connection or bridge, and compare rail measurements with the revision-specific service information. |
| Vibration, display activity, or a response to flashing/service equipment | The handset may have progressed beyond the earliest power path even if normal boot does not complete. | Stop treating it as a totally dead board. Check the modified interfaces and use the correct service procedure rather than replacing random parts. |
| Display or backlight only, with no usable startup | Some power is present, but the observation does not prove that the processor, clock, keypad route, or software startup is healthy. | Separate display illumination from actual boot activity and inspect the modification around power, reset, clock, and connector lines. |
These branches are a practical way to organize observations; they are not a diagnosis of a particular handset.
3. Rule out the battery and contacts
Use a known-good, appropriately specified battery
Test with a battery known to operate another compatible handset, or verify the original battery in a known-good phone. A battery that appears charged can still have a damaged cell, high internal resistance, or an intermittent terminal. Do not substitute a source with an unknown voltage or polarity merely because it fits the connector.
When the phone is switched on, watch for a battery terminal that moves, sparks, or becomes hot. Stop immediately if the pack, board, or a wire heats up. A failed battery cannot be distinguished from a board fault by the title alone, so record the result of the known-good-battery test rather than assuming it.
Inspect the battery connector and contacts
Remove power and examine the battery contacts, connector housing, and solder joints under magnification. Look for contamination, flattened spring contacts, cracked joints, lifted pads, or a connector that moves relative to the board. Clean only with a method appropriate for electronics and allow the board to dry completely; do not flood the handset or scrape plating away.

Secondary-hosted service-manual material treats battery-connector continuity as relevant to a no-power complaint. That is a reason to verify the connection, not proof that the connector is defective. A continuity result should be interpreted against the board’s actual schematic and connector pinout.
4. Inspect the modification with the battery removed
Most useful first checks are visual. Use magnification and bright, angled light, and compare the board with your own build notes or schematic.
- Solder bridges: Look between fine-pitch pins and beside jumpers for a hairline connection to an adjacent signal or ground.
- Lifted pads: A pad can look attached while its copper foil has separated from the substrate. Gently compare its height and movement with neighboring pads; do not pull on it.
- Open traces: A trace cut for the mod may have been cut farther than intended, or a jumper may not actually reach the original net.
- Cracked joints: Inspect both ends of every wire and replacement component. A joint that worked once can open when the board is flexed.
- Misplaced values or orientation: Check resistor, capacitor, diode, and polarized-part markings against the modification diagram. An apparently correct footprint does not establish the fitted value.
- Mechanical damage: Look for a shield edge, screw, battery spring, or case part pressing on the new wire or component.
- Unintended ground contact: Ensure that exposed wire, scraped solder mask, or a component lead cannot touch a shield or nearby ground plane.
Do not power the board repeatedly while searching for a fault. Each cycle can turn a marginal bridge into permanent damage, especially when the modification changed a supply or protection path.
5. Use a multimeter only within the board’s documented limits
Continuity checks
With the battery removed and capacitors allowed to discharge, use continuity mode to compare each modified connection with the schematic. Verify a jumper from end to end, then verify that it is not shorted to adjacent nets. A beep through a low-resistance power rail may be normal because capacitors and semiconductors are in circuit; continuity mode alone cannot identify a shorted chip.
Probe from stable test points rather than dragging a sharp tip across fine-pitch pins. Keep one hand clear of the board when practical, avoid slipping into adjacent contacts, and write down the exact points measured. If the board has no revision-matched diagram, stop at visual inspection instead of guessing pin functions.

DC-voltage checks
Use the correct polarity, range, and reference ground. First establish whether the battery voltage reaches the board’s intended input point. Then follow only rails and switch nodes identified by the matching schematic. Never assume that a similarly shaped pad on another 3310 revision has the same function.
The power key is worth checking because the no-power symptom can result from an interrupted switch route. With the battery removed, verify the switch’s mechanical action and the continuity path described by the schematic. If a powered test is required, secure the board so the probe cannot slip and avoid probing dense packages without suitable fixtures.
Current measurement and its limits
Nokia’s NHM-5/6 repair hints list a digital multimeter and oscilloscopes among the instruments used for service measurements. A consumer meter is appropriate for basic continuity and DC-voltage checks; it is not a complete boot-fault analyzer. Measuring current incorrectly can short the battery, so use the meter’s current input only with a known-safe setup and the board’s documented test method.
A related NHM-2/5/6 Repairhints Version 4.0 manual from Nokia Customer Care Europe, Middle East & Africa (2002) gives these normal operating-mode ranges:
| Mode in the historical manual | Stated current | How to interpret it here |
|---|---|---|
| Off state | 0.1–0.6 mA | A historical reference for that NHM platform, not a pass/fail limit for an unknown modification. |
| Sleep mode | 0.6–4 mA | Useful only when the handset and measurement setup match the manual’s platform and conditions. |
| Call mode | 100–550 mA | An operating reference, not an expected reading during a failed startup attempt. |
These figures are not measured values for your handset. A brief pulse, a stable low draw, or no measurable draw must be correlated with the exact board revision, battery voltage, meter burden, and symptom timing.

6. Follow the branch that matches your observation
Branch A: no measurable current or activity
Confirm the battery and contacts first. If both are verified, inspect the modification for an open battery path, a damaged switch route, or a short that causes a protection response. Check continuity from the battery connector toward the board input only where the schematic identifies those points. If the supply reaches the board but the key route does not change state, repair the documented open or switch connection before considering component replacement.
If the board remains completely inactive after the modification is electrically correct, do not infer that the main processor is dead. A missing clock, reset condition, protection device, or damaged multilayer trace can produce the same external symptom and requires revision-specific service information.
Branch B: a pulse followed by shutdown
A pulse indicates that some startup activity may occur, but it does not identify the failing stage. First look for a bridge, wrong component value, unstable jumper, or battery contact that collapses under load. Compare the battery voltage before and during the attempt only if your equipment and probing method are safe.
When the modification changed a clock, reset, power-management, or radio-related line, use the matching schematic to decide which rail or waveform is meaningful. An oscilloscope or service fixture may be required; do not substitute a guessed voltage test from another NHM manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBranch C: later boot, flashing, or service response
If the display, vibration, or service equipment indicates later progress, preserve that state and stop changing unrelated parts. Check the modified interface, connector alignment, and any line that the mod rerouted. A phone that reaches a flashing stage may need software or service procedures specific to its platform, but the supplied historical manuals do not establish a repair sequence for an unspecified custom board.

7. Do not perform speculative fine-pitch rework
Blind heating is especially risky on dense or underfilled packages. Nokia’s Version 3.0 repair hints state: “It is not possible to change underfilled components. The trial will damage PCB surely.” The warning concerns the specific underfilled components covered by that service guidance, but the risk is directly relevant to an unknown modification: heating can lift pads, delaminate the board, or turn a recoverable bridge into a multilayer failure.
The same service material says hot-air rework of CSPs is forbidden in that procedure and calls for approved equipment for specified parts. It is marked for authorized Nokia service centers. Do not treat a household heat gun, an unverified temperature setting, or a generic BGA rework video as an equivalent process.
Replace a component only after its identity, failure evidence, board revision, and rework method are established. A donor board or replacement part is not a sensible first response when the modification itself may have opened a trace or bridged a neighboring net.

Stop and obtain a revision-matched schematic or experienced repair help when any of these conditions applies:
- The PCB marking cannot be identified.
- The modification has no schematic or build record.
- Battery voltage or connector polarity is uncertain.
- A continuity test appears to show a short, but the rail includes capacitors or semiconductor junctions that you cannot isolate.
- The suspected fault is under a shield, BGA, CSP, or underfilled package.
- Measurements conflict because the board moves, the battery contact is intermittent, or the meter setup loads the circuit.
- The repair would require hot-air, microscope rework, or a service fixture you are not trained to use.
At that point, provide the technician with the board photographs, revision markings, modification diagram, battery details, symptom timeline, and every measured value. That information is more useful than a list of parts already heated or replaced.
A concise recovery checklist
- Remove the battery and document both board sides and every modification.
- Identify the PCB or NHM platform; do not borrow a pinout from another revision.
- Test a known-good, correctly specified battery and inspect the connector and contacts.
- Classify the symptom as no activity, a brief startup attempt, or later boot/service activity.
- Inspect for bridges, open traces, lifted pads, cracked joints, wrong values, and mechanical contact.
- Use a multimeter for documented continuity and DC-voltage checks, recording test points and polarity.
- Measure current only with a safe setup and treat historical NHM ranges as references, not universal limits.
- Stop before speculative heating or replacement of underfilled, CSP, or BGA parts.
- Escalate with complete evidence when the board identity, modification, or measurement method is uncertain.
What the historical Nokia documents can—and cannot—tell you
The cited Nokia material provides symptom-oriented service guidance for NHM-5/6 and NHM-2/5/6 platforms, including a dedicated no-power flow and instrument lists. It does not describe the reader’s unspecified PCB modification, establish a failure rate for modified 3310 phones, or identify a failed component from the title alone.
Its parts guidance also notes that replacement parts can differ and that service work may require retuning. That is why revision identification belongs at the beginning of troubleshooting, not after an unsuccessful generic part swap. The safest conclusion is conditional: verify the supply and contacts, inspect the mod, measure only against the matching documentation, and stop before destructive rework when the evidence does not identify the fault.
