Record the model year, engine, transmission, market, modifications, whether the engine is running, whether all gears or just one are affected, and any change in clutch-pedal feel or noise. Don’t force the shifter or keep driving if you can’t control the car normally.
Identify the symptom before looking for a cause
“Won’t go into gear” can describe different problems. Note which of these best matches what you observe, and share the details with a qualified technician:

- The lever resists selecting a gear with the engine off.
- The lever selects a gear with the engine off but resists selection when the engine is running.
- Only one gear is difficult or impossible to select.
- A gear selects, but the car does not move normally.
- The clutch pedal feels different than usual or makes a noise.
These observations help describe the fault; they do not, by themselves, identify a failed component. The available Ford references do not establish one diagnostic tree or roadside test procedure that applies to every Mustang. Use the owner’s manual and service information for the car’s exact year and configuration. Why the clutch may be relevant
Ford describes the clutch as the mechanism that engages and disengages engine power from the transmission during shifting. Its glossary explains: “Depressing the clutch pedal interrupts power flow to the transmission/Trans axle.” That makes clutch disengagement one system to consider when a gear-selection complaint occurs, but it does not establish that the clutch—or any particular clutch component—has failed. Check the Mustang’s year before assuming its clutch layout
Mustangs do not all use the same clutch-actuation parts. Ford Performance’s clutch-quadrant instructions apply to 1982–2003 Mustang applications and describe a cable connected to the clutch fork, with a plastic quadrant above the accelerator pedal. Those instructions cover a specific product and application; they are not a general no-gear diagnostic guide and should not be applied to other model years without matching service information. Consult the Ford Performance instructions only if your vehicle falls within the stated application and the part is relevant.
When to stop and get service
Do not force the shifter, continue driving a car that cannot be controlled normally, or treat an engine-off versus engine-running difference as a conclusive test. If diagnosis requires removing covers, lifting the car, or opening the clutch or transmission assembly, use a qualified repair facility or the correct workshop procedure. For its installation, Ford Performance recommends a hoist and warns that jack stands must be seated firmly on a level surface; this is a safety warning, not a general repair procedure.

Don’t replace the transmission based on the symptom alone
Ford’s parts catalog lists manual transmission assemblies, including listings associated with 5.0L and 2.3L six-speed descriptions. Those listings do not establish that an assembly fits a particular Mustang or that replacement is warranted by a no-gear complaint. Before approving a transmission assembly, get a diagnosis, confirm fitment against the vehicle’s VIN and configuration, and review a repair estimate. See Ford’s catalog listing.

- Model year, engine, transmission, market, and any relevant modifications.
- Whether selection fails with the engine off, running, or both.
- Whether the issue affects every gear or only a particular gear.
- Whether the lever resists selection or a selected gear fails to move the car normally.
- Any change in clutch-pedal feel or any noise, and when it occurs.
These details organize the complaint without presuming a diagnosis. A specialized possibility such as bellhousing/crankshaft centerline misalignment is discussed in Ford Performance’s catalog in connection with gear wear, jumping out of gear, vibration, bearing noise, or excessive clutch spin time.
