The fix depends on the device. For a speaker or display, check power, the microphone mute control and the response indicator before changing settings. For Android, check connectivity, update the Google app, then verify Hey Google and Voice Match. If the device recently lost Wi‑Fi or the network changed, set it up again in Google Home.
Identify which device has stopped responding
Google publishes separate procedures for mobile devices and for smart speakers and displays. Use the branch that matches the hardware rather than applying phone steps to a Nest device or speaker steps to a phone.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Google Home or Nest speaker/display: the device may be unpowered, muted, unable to hear the wake phrase, unable to understand the follow-up request, offline, or incompletely set up.
- Android phone or tablet: the Google app, internet connection, Hey Google setting or Voice Match may be responsible.
- Only personal answers are missing: the wake phrase and general Assistant may still work; this is usually a Voice Match or personal-results problem, not total nonresponse.
- A different assistant has replaced Google Assistant: this guide covers Google Home/Nest hardware and Android’s Google Assistant controls. A third-party assistant has its own support path.
Write down the exact symptom before changing anything. “No lights,” “the lights react but the question fails,” “the device is missing from Google Home,” and “it answers but does not recognize me” are different failures. This simple separation keeps you from resetting a working device or changing network settings unnecessarily.

Fix a Google Home or Nest speaker or display that does not respond
Follow these checks in order. They separate a power or microphone problem from a wake-word problem and from a networking or account problem.

1. Confirm power and the microphone is not muted
Make sure the speaker or display is connected to a wall outlet and shows that it is powered on. Then inspect the physical microphone switch or mute button. The control is model-specific: Google Home, Nest Audio, Nest Mini and Nest displays do not all place or indicate mute in the same way. A muted microphone prevents the device from hearing “Hey Google” or “OK Google,” even when the display is lit.
Do not assume a silent device has failed. Correct the power connection and unmute it first, then test again using the wake phrase. If the device has a removable power cable, check both ends. Avoid testing from another room until you know the microphone is enabled; distance and walls can make a healthy device appear unreliable.
2. Watch the indicator while saying “Hey Google”
Say the wake phrase from near the device and watch its indicator. Google’s speaker and display guidance uses the indicator to show whether the wake phrase was detected: supported speakers can show spinning or blinking LEDs, while Nest displays use colored dots. Google Home Speaker has its own indicator behavior. If nothing changes, the device may not have heard the phrase, may still be muted, or may not have power. If the indicator reacts but the answer never arrives, continue to the request and network checks below. See Google’s “Fix issues with ‘Hey Google’ on a Google smart speaker or display” guide for model-specific light and microphone details.
Repeat the test at a normal speaking volume, then from the position where you usually use the device. A response indicator proves that the wake phrase was detected; it does not prove that the follow-up request was understood or that the device is online.
3. Separate wake-word detection from question understanding
An Assistant can hear the wake phrase and still misunderstand the question. When the indicator reacts but the response is wrong or absent:
- Ask the same question again in a shorter sentence.
- Speak a little more slowly and leave a brief pause after the wake phrase.
- Ask the device to repeat the question, then rephrase it.
- Try a simple, unrelated question. If that works, the original wording or context—not the microphone—was the immediate failure.
This distinction prevents you from changing Wi‑Fi or replacing hardware when the device is actually listening but cannot parse one request. If simple questions consistently work while one complex request fails, troubleshoot the wording or service involved rather than the speaker’s power.
4. Reboot by removing power
Unplug the speaker or display, wait briefly, reconnect it and allow it to finish starting up. Then test the wake phrase and a simple question. This is the documented next step after checking power, mute status and the indicator. It does not erase the device’s home, account or routines.
Do not interrupt startup by repeatedly pulling the cable in and out. Give the device time to reconnect before deciding that the reboot failed. If it responds after the reboot but later becomes silent again, note what was happening at the time, such as a network change or frequent background noise.
5. Adjust hotword sensitivity if activation is unreliable
If the device responds only occasionally, open its settings in Google Home and adjust hotword sensitivity when that control is available for the model. A room with a television, fan or other speech-like noise can make activation inconsistent; a sensitivity change is appropriate when the device otherwise answers normally. Test from the usual listening position after each adjustment.

Change one setting at a time and retest. If the indicator never reacts, sensitivity is not a substitute for checking mute status, power and setup. If the indicator reacts reliably but answers are wrong, return to the request-understanding steps instead.
6. Send feedback if the device still will not answer
When power, mute status, indicators, a reboot and sensitivity checks do not solve the problem, submit feedback through the Google Home app. Google documents feedback reporting for persistent speaker and display response issues, but its guidance does not define a universal point at which a device qualifies for hardware replacement. Do not infer a replacement requirement solely from one failed question or a setup message.
Include the model, whether the LEDs or display reacted, whether a simple question worked, and whether the problem affects every person or only one voice. Those observations make the report more useful than saying only that the Assistant is broken.
Restore Wi‑Fi and finish setup on a replacement speaker
A replacement device can appear unresponsive simply because it is offline or was never fully added to the home. Google says a Home or Nest device may need setup again after the Wi‑Fi network name, password or internet provider changes.
Check whether Google Home can see the device
Open Google Home and look for the speaker or display. If it is present but offline, follow the app’s reconnect or setup prompt. If it does not appear at all, use the app’s add-device flow and keep the phone close to the speaker during discovery. The documented Wi‑Fi guidance is at Google’s “Nest or Home device not connected to Wi‑Fi” page.
Use the same home and Google Account that should control the replacement. A device that was added to a different home can be powered and online yet absent from the home you are viewing, so check the selected home in the app before repeating discovery.
Work through setup obstacles in the documented order
- Confirm that the Wi‑Fi password is correct; re-enter it rather than relying on an old saved value.
- Keep the phone or tablet close to the speaker/display while setup is running.
- Restart the speaker/display and try setup again.
- If discovery fails, try another phone or tablet.
- Make sure the setup phone is using the same Wi‑Fi network that the device should join.
- Turn on Bluetooth during pairing and avoid forcing the phone to use cellular data instead of the local network.
- On applicable iPhone or iPad versions, grant Google Home local-network permission.
- Check network-equipment settings that can isolate devices or block local discovery.
Google’s setup and pairing references provide the detailed checks for password errors, distance, Bluetooth, cellular data, local-network permission and network-equipment configuration: Fix setup issues for smart speakers or displays and Home/Nest device pairing troubleshooting.
Keep the phone unlocked and nearby during discovery, and avoid switching between Wi‑Fi networks midway through setup. If another phone succeeds on the same network, the original phone’s permissions or connectivity are the likely obstacle. If every phone fails, concentrate on the speaker’s power, the Wi‑Fi credentials and router settings.
Interpret the setup result before taking further action
- It appears in Google Home but reports offline: concentrate on Wi‑Fi credentials, signal and the network change; complete the in-app reconnect or setup.
- It never appears during discovery: check Bluetooth, local-network permission where applicable, same-Wi‑Fi status and distance before blaming the speaker.
- Setup accepts the password but fails later: restart the device and inspect router or access-point settings that prevent local devices from communicating.
- Only one phone cannot find it: use another setup device, which helps distinguish a phone-permission problem from a speaker problem.
A setup failure alone is not evidence that you need a new router or another speaker. Resolve the network and discovery conditions first. A changed provider, network name or password is a configuration event, not proof of hardware damage.

Fix “Hey Google” on an Android phone or tablet
Use Google’s mobile troubleshooting sequence rather than the smart-speaker checklist. Start with the connection, then the app and Assistant settings. The current mobile instructions are in Google’s “Fix issues with ‘Hey Google’ on a mobile device” guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Verify the internet connection
Try a web page or another online app. Assistant needs a reliable connection for many requests. If the signal is weak or requests stall, move to a stronger Wi‑Fi or mobile-data location and restart the phone when the connection itself is unreliable.
Test again after the connection is stable. A phone that can open a cached page but cannot reach current services may still produce delayed or missing Assistant responses, so compare more than one online app.
2. Update the Google app
Open the Play Store, search for the Google app and install any available update. An out-of-date app can leave Assistant features or wake-word controls out of sync with the current Android installation. After updating, test “Hey Google” again.
3. Turn on Hey Google and Voice Match
Open Google Assistant settings on the phone and verify that Hey Google and Voice Match are enabled. Android menu names vary by version and language, so use the Settings search for “Assistant,” “Hey Google” or “Voice Match” if the path differs. Complete the voice setup when prompted, then test from the normal lock-screen or home-screen state in which you expect the phone to listen.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Voice Match is not merely a volume or microphone switch. It determines whether the phone can associate the spoken wake phrase with your account and provide supported personal results. If the phone responds to a button press but not the phrase, focus on the Hey Google and Voice Match controls rather than speaker mute settings.
4. Check for an education-managed account
If the phone uses a Google Workspace for Education account and Hey Google cannot be enabled, an administrator may have disabled the required setting. That restriction cannot be corrected by retraining your voice or reinstalling the app; ask the organization’s administrator whether voice activation is allowed.
Repair Voice Match when general answers work but personal results do not
Voice Match is the personalization branch. It associates a voice with a linked Google Account so supported devices can provide personal results. A device can answer general questions while withholding calendars, reminders or other personal information when it does not recognize the speaker.
Manage Voice Match for the home and supported devices
In the Google Home app, open the account or home settings, select Google Assistant and then Voice Match. Review which people and supported devices are enabled, and retrain the voice model when recognition is poor. The exact labels can vary with app version; Google’s account and device instructions are in Turn on voice recognition with Voice Match and Set up and manage Voice Match.

After retraining, test both a general question and a personal request. If general answers work but personal results remain unavailable, verify that the intended Google Account is linked and that the device is one of the supported devices enabled for your home.
Understand what an unmatched voice means
Google treats an unrecognized request as a guest query. That can produce a normal answer while withholding personal results. Therefore, “it answers me but does not know my appointments” points to recognition or account association, not necessarily a dead microphone or offline device.
Account limitations
Voice Match requires a linked Google Account. Google’s standard Voice Match steps do not apply in the same way to Workspace accounts, so use the account administrator’s policies when a managed account blocks enrollment or personal results.

| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| No light, sound or response from a speaker/display | Wall power, cable connection and the model’s microphone mute control. |
| Indicator does not react to “Hey Google” | Mute status, distance, background noise and hotword sensitivity. |
| Indicator reacts, but one request fails | Repeat, slow down or rephrase the request; test a simple question. |
| Device worked until the home network changed | Set it up again in Google Home with the new Wi‑Fi details. |
| Speaker/display is absent from Google Home | Bluetooth, same-Wi‑Fi status, local-network permission, distance and another setup phone. |
| Android phone has weak or stalled responses | Internet strength, a restart and the latest Google app. |
| General answers work but personal results are missing | Voice Match enrollment, retraining and the linked-account or administrator policy. |
What not to do
- Do not treat every failed answer as a hardware failure; first observe whether the indicator detected the wake phrase.
- Do not give a speaker a phone-specific fix such as updating the Google app, or use speaker setup steps for an Android Assistant problem.
- Do not assume a muted microphone from a dark display alone; confirm the model’s physical control and power state.
- Do not buy a replacement router or speaker solely because setup failed once. Password, permissions, Bluetooth, distance and local-network isolation can all stop discovery.
- Do not confuse missing personal results with total nonresponse. An unmatched voice may still receive guest answers.
- Do not repeatedly change several settings at once. You will lose the clue that identifies whether the failure is power, wake-word detection, speech understanding, network setup or account recognition.
When the normal checklist has been exhausted
Record exactly what happened: whether the device powered on, whether the indicator reacted, whether a simple question worked, whether Google Home listed the device, and whether the network had recently changed. Include the model and the steps already tried when sending feedback through Google Home. This information directs support toward the correct layer—microphone, speech understanding, network/setup or Voice Match—without assuming a replacement is required.
If the problem is intermittent, record when it happens and whether another person can activate the device. A difference between users supports a Voice Match or voice-recognition diagnosis; a failure for everyone points more strongly to power, microphone, network or setup. Keep the original error wording from Google Home when possible, because “offline,” “can’t connect to Wi‑Fi” and “device not found” lead to different checks.
Quick decision path
- Speaker/display: power on and unmute it.
- Say “Hey Google” and watch the indicator.
- If there is no indicator response, correct mute, distance or sensitivity issues.
- If it reacts, retry with a simpler or rephrased question.
- Unplug and reconnect power.
- If it is offline or missing from Google Home, check Wi‑Fi and complete setup again.
- If it answers generally but not personally, repair Voice Match and account association.
- Android: verify a strong connection, restart if needed, update the Google app, then enable Hey Google and Voice Match.
- For persistent speaker/display failures, submit feedback in Google Home with the observed indicators and steps.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my replacement speaker not respond to “Hey Google”?
Check wall power and the model-specific microphone switch first. Say the phrase nearby while watching for spinning or blinking LEDs, colored dots or the Google Home Speaker indicator. No reaction points to power, mute, distance or wake-word sensitivity; a reaction means you should test the wording of the request and the network.
Why is the replacement speaker not appearing in Google Home?
Keep the setup phone close, use the same Wi‑Fi network the speaker should join, turn on Bluetooth and grant local-network permission where applicable. Re-enter the Wi‑Fi password, restart the speaker and try another phone. Router settings that isolate local devices can also block discovery.
Do I need to set up the device again after changing Wi‑Fi?
Often, yes. Google says a Home or Nest device may need setup again after the network name, password or internet provider changes. Use Google Home’s add-device or reconnect flow with the new credentials rather than assuming the speaker is defective.
Recommended Free Tools
What if the indicator reacts but the Assistant gives no useful answer?
Separate detection from understanding. Repeat the request more slowly, shorten it, ask the Assistant to repeat the question or try a simple unrelated question. If simple requests work, the original phrasing or context caused the immediate failure.
Best Value
Why does the Assistant answer general questions but not my calendar or reminders?
That pattern usually indicates Voice Match or account association, not total nonresponse. Confirm that Voice Match is enabled for the home and supported device, retrain your voice and check the linked Google Account. An unrecognized voice can receive guest answers while personal results remain withheld.
Why can’t I turn on Hey Google on a school-managed phone?
A Google Workspace for Education administrator may have disabled the required setting. If the control cannot be enabled, retraining or reinstalling the app will not remove that policy. Ask the organization’s administrator whether voice activation is permitted.
When should I replace the speaker?
Google’s troubleshooting pages do not define a universal hardware-replacement threshold. Complete the power, mute, indicator, reboot, Wi‑Fi, setup and feedback steps first. A single failed question or setup attempt is not enough to establish hardware failure.

What is the fastest first check for a silent Google Home or Nest device?
Confirm wall power and the model-specific microphone mute switch, then say “Hey Google” while watching the indicator.
How can I tell whether the device heard me?
Supported speakers may show spinning or blinking LEDs; Nest displays use colored dots, and Google Home Speaker has its own indicator behavior. No indicator response means the wake phrase was not detected.
Why did my device stop working after a router or Wi‑Fi change?
A changed network name, password or provider can require setting up the Home or Nest device again in Google Home.
What does it mean if general answers work but personal results do not?
The request may be treated as a guest query because Voice Match did not recognize the speaker. Check Voice Match enrollment, retrain the voice model and verify the linked account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a Workspace for Education policy block Hey Google?
Yes. An administrator may disable the required setting, and only the organization can change that policy.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the layer before replacing anything: power and mute, wake-word detection, request understanding, Wi‑Fi/setup or Voice Match. Use Google Home for speaker and display recovery, the mobile sequence for Android, and submit detailed feedback when the documented checks do not restore responses.
