Start by identifying the exact weather extension, your GNOME Shell version, and your Linux distribution. Then check the extension’s own location setting before changing system-wide location permissions. A wrong city usually comes from a saved city, coordinate, or geolocation failure; an empty forecast can also result from an unsupported Shell version, missing GNOME Weather companion app, unavailable provider, or lost internet access.

Collect the details that determine the correct fix

GNOME Shell weather extensions do not share one location system or one forecast service. Some read a city that you select manually, some use latitude and longitude, and some ask GeoClue2 for an automatic position. They may also depend on GNOME Weather, a provider-specific API, or their own offline and fallback logic.

Write down these details before troubleshooting:

  • Extension name and version: Use the Extensions app or the extension’s listing to identify it exactly. Names such as Weather Prime, WeatherPanel, Weather or Not, OpenWeather, and Weather can have different requirements.
  • GNOME Shell version: Check Settings > About, or run gnome-shell --version in a terminal. Record the complete version, such as 45, 50, or 51.
  • Distribution and release: Package versions and privacy settings differ between distributions, even when they use the same GNOME Shell release.
  • Configured city, coordinates, and provider: Note what the extension currently displays and which provider, if the preferences expose one.
  • Exact symptom: Distinguish a wrong city, a stale timestamp, a blank forecast, an error message, or an icon that disappears.

These details prevent a common mistake: applying instructions for one extension to another that uses a completely different data path.

Check compatibility before changing settings

An extension can remain installed while no longer working correctly after a GNOME Shell upgrade. Installation availability, an old cached copy, or a visible toggle does not prove that the release supports your Shell version.

Read the extension’s current compatibility table

  1. Open the GNOME Extensions listing or the project page for the extension you actually installed.
  2. Find the releases or supported GNOME Shell versions section.
  3. Compare the listed versions with the result from gnome-shell --version.
  4. Check the date and version of the installed extension, because a listing can change after you last installed it.

Compatibility is extension-specific. The Weather or Not listing includes releases for GNOME Shell 45 through 51. The inspected OpenWeather listing shows active releases for older Shell versions, including 43 and 44. Those ranges are snapshots, not a promise that every release supports every version today; use the live listing for your exact extension.

Do not edit an extension’s metadata or force-install an incompatible release as a general repair. Bypassing the declared compatibility can leave JavaScript errors, broken preferences, or a Shell crash, and it does not make the provider or location code compatible.

Fix a wrong city or location

First test the extension’s own location configuration. If a manually selected city produces a forecast, the weather provider is reachable and the automatic-location path is the likely problem. A successful manual lookup does not guarantee that a provider has data for every place, but it separates two failure classes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the extension preferences

  1. Open the Extensions application, select Installed, find the weather extension, and open its preferences with the gear button. Depending on your distribution, you may instead open the extension’s menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Look for fields named Location, City, Coordinates, Latitude, Longitude, or Location source.
  3. Remove an incorrect saved city and search for the intended city again. If several places share a name, choose the entry with the correct region or country.
  4. If coordinates are supported, enter the latitude and longitude for the intended place and save. Weather Prime documents both city search and direct latitude/longitude entry; other extensions may expose only one of those controls.
  5. Close and reopen the extension menu, or disable and re-enable the extension, so it reloads the saved value.

If the extension offers both Automatic and Manual modes, select Manual temporarily. A correct result in Manual mode points to geolocation rather than to the forecast service. If Manual mode is also blank, continue with the provider and network checks below.

Understand automatic location and GeoClue2

Automatic detection is not universal. Weather Prime documents automatic location through GeoClue2 and requires location services to be enabled. On a GNOME desktop, check Settings > Privacy > Location Services and turn the service on if your distribution exposes that control. You may need to restart the extension after changing it.

Location permission matters only when the extension is configured to detect your position automatically. If you selected a city or entered coordinates manually, changing the system location switch will not correct a mistyped city, an ambiguous search result, or a provider that lacks coverage.

When the detected location is near, but not at, your city

IP-based or desktop geolocation can identify a nearby city, the location of your internet provider, or a VPN exit point rather than your physical address. If the extension has no manual override, test without the VPN or choose a manual city if the extension supports it. Treat the detected result as an estimate; do not grant broader permissions than the extension needs simply to correct a forecast city.

Restore a missing or empty forecast

A blank forecast means the location setting is only one possibility. Check the data path in this order so that each test rules out a different cause.

1. Confirm ordinary internet access

Open a few unrelated websites in a browser on the same connection. If browsing fails, reconnect Wi-Fi or wired networking, sign in to a captive portal, or check whether a firewall, proxy, DNS filter, or VPN is blocking the extension. A weather icon can remain visible while its network request fails.

If general browsing works but only weather data fails, continue rather than repeatedly toggling the network. The provider may be unavailable, the extension may require a key, or the installed release may not understand the provider’s current response.

2. Check for a required companion application

Weather or Not explicitly requires GNOME Weather to be installed and requires an active internet connection. Install GNOME Weather from your distribution’s normal software source, launch it once if your distribution asks for initial setup, and then restart the extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume this requirement applies to every extension. WeatherPanel documents its own provider and fallback behavior, while other extensions can query a service directly. The extension’s current project page is the authority for whether GNOME Weather is mandatory.

3. Inspect provider and API settings

Open the preferences and look for Provider, API, API key, or Service. Some releases let you choose a provider; others have a fixed service. A missing or rejected key can produce no forecast even when the city is correct.

The OpenWeather README describes configurable providers and API-key settings, and says that coordinate configuration is available from version 29 onward. Its provider details may be dated, so do not treat historic service names, request limits, or prices in that README as current facts. Verify any key or provider requirement against the extension’s current documentation and the provider’s current terms.

  • OPEN-SOURCE INSTALLATION MEDIA – Debian-based open-source operating system supplied with printed initial-start instructions.

4. Allow for fallback and offline behavior

WeatherPanel documents alternative providers, automatic fallback when the selected provider fails, and offline handling. If you use that extension, check whether a fallback provider is enabled and whether the displayed data is intentionally cached. A cached timestamp can look like a live forecast that has stopped updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other extensions may have no fallback at all. In those cases, a temporary provider outage appears simply as an empty panel. Wait for the service to recover only after confirming that your location, network, and compatibility settings are correct.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

What you see Most useful first test What the result means
The city is wrong but a forecast appears Switch to Manual location and enter the city or coordinates A correct manual result isolates automatic detection or geolocation accuracy.
The city field is correct but the panel is blank Check internet access, provider/API settings, and any required companion app The location is probably not the only dependency; the forecast request or parser may be failing.
The extension vanished after a Shell upgrade Compare the extension release with your current Shell version An unsupported extension release is more likely than a bad city setting.
Data appears only after reopening the menu Check refresh interval, cached/offline status, and Shell logs The extension may be failing its background refresh while its stored data remains visible.
Automatic mode fails but Manual mode works Enable location services and verify GeoClue2 where documented The weather provider works; location detection or permission is the failing layer.
Manual mode also fails for several cities Test the provider, API key, companion app, and network The fault is probably upstream of geolocation.

Capture GNOME Shell logs for a persistent failure

When settings and compatibility look correct, collect evidence instead of guessing. WeatherPanel’s project documentation gives this command for following GNOME Shell logs:

journalctl -f /usr/bin/gnome-shell
  1. Open a terminal and run the command.
  2. Reproduce the problem: open the weather menu, change the city, or reload the extension.
  3. Watch for messages naming the extension, a provider request, GeoClue2, a missing module, a permission denial, or a JavaScript exception.
  4. Stop the live view with Ctrl+C and save the relevant lines, including the time they occurred.

Log access and journal paths vary by distribution. If that command returns no useful lines, use your distribution’s system journal viewer or inspect the GNOME Shell session log. Do not paste unrelated personal data or API keys when asking for help.

A maintainer can usually do more with a concise report containing the distribution and release, GNOME Shell version, extension name and version, selected city or coordinates, provider, whether Manual mode works, and the exact error text than with a screenshot of an empty panel.

Decide whether to keep the extension or try another

Switching extensions can solve a compatibility or dependency mismatch, but it will not repair a blocked network or an incorrectly enabled location service. Compare the capabilities that matter to your setup rather than choosing by icon appearance.

Extension or example Shell support evidence Location controls Data and dependency notes
Weather Prime Its documentation states a GNOME Shell 50 requirement. City search and direct latitude/longitude entry; automatic location uses GeoClue2 and enabled location services. Useful when you want a manual override or coordinate entry; automatic mode depends on the desktop location service.
WeatherPanel Check its current project listing for your Shell release. Uses the location options documented by the project. Documents multiple providers, automatic fallback when a selected provider fails, and offline handling.
Weather or Not The reviewed listing includes releases for GNOME Shell 45 through 51. Use the controls provided by its current release. Requires GNOME Weather and an active internet connection.
OpenWeather The inspected active listing showed older Shell targets, including 43 and 44; verify the live listing before installing. The README describes provider and location configuration, with coordinates from version 29 onward. Provider and API-key details may be stale in the README; confirm current requirements.
Weather The listing documents older Shell compatibility ranges; check the current release. Supports displaying weather for multiple cities. Multi-city display does not by itself establish current provider availability or Shell compatibility.

Use the current listing for the installed extension as the deciding source. The table illustrates why two extensions on the same desktop can require different fixes, not a guarantee that any one option will work with your distribution.

Common mistakes that make the problem worse

Changing system location when the city is manually saved

A manually selected city bypasses automatic detection. Verify and replace the saved city or coordinates first; privacy settings cannot correct a saved value.

Assuming an install button proves support

Old releases can remain available or installed after a Shell upgrade. Check the release’s declared compatibility instead of relying on whether the extension toggles on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copying another extension’s API instructions

Provider names, keys, coordinate formats, and fallback behavior are extension-specific. Follow the installed extension’s documentation, and treat old README instructions as historical when they do not state a current version or service status.

Deleting configuration before recording it

Resetting preferences can remove a working manual coordinate, provider choice, or API key. Record the current values and export or copy them where the extension provides a supported backup before resetting.

Forcing compatibility metadata

Editing metadata may hide the warning without fixing incompatible code. Reinstall a release that declares support for your Shell version, or choose a maintained alternative whose requirements match your system.

A complete recovery sequence

Follow this order when you want one concise procedure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the distribution, GNOME Shell version, extension name and version, symptom, city, coordinates, and provider.
  2. Check the extension’s live compatibility table and install a release that explicitly supports your Shell version.
  3. Open the extension preferences and verify the city or coordinates.
  4. Switch to Manual mode and test a known city if that option exists.
  5. If using Automatic mode, enable desktop location services and verify the extension’s documented GeoClue2 requirement.
  6. Confirm ordinary internet access without assuming that a visible network icon means the provider request succeeds.
  7. Install or repair a required companion such as GNOME Weather when the extension explicitly depends on it.
  8. Check provider, API-key, fallback, and offline settings; do not reuse instructions from a different extension.
  9. Reload the extension and observe whether the timestamp and forecast update.
  10. If it still fails, follow GNOME Shell logs while reproducing the issue and include the resulting error in a support report.

This sequence separates compatibility, location, permission, network, companion-application, and provider failures without changing unrelated system settings.
